2968 - Changing Country of Origin Changes ALL Team Names

Version: 2.0.0.235
PC/MAC: PC
What were you doing? Creating a new league
What happened? When I changed the country of origin, ALL teams automatically change
Reproducible? Yes
Problem occurs with other leagues? Yes

Okay guys, this one is more than annoying, it needs to be fixed. It isn't hard to go back in and ask all the team names to be randomized under a new national identity. It IS hard to re-type dozens (sometimes 100) team names in that you've already input, not realizing that when you change the nationality, it will erase all your work.

This is a bad design decision. Please fix.

This is by design and cannot be fixed! Need to change the country first...

Can't be fixed? That's highly, highly disappointing and needs to be re-designed, IMO.

I empathize with your frustration but I'm not sure you are explaining what you want correctly. If you change the country, the home cities for the teams would have to change, or else they would not match the country. The only thing I think you could really ask for is a warning pop-up that your team names are all going to change if you change the country. But perhaps that is not what you mean?

They don't have to change, though. If you're starting fresh with team names you want, you're going to be typing your team names in anyway, so the fresh team names don't matter (meaning there's no reason to populate them). If you want random cities under that country, there's already a button for that.

It's unnecessary redundancy that is very destructively time consuming upon game setup if you either forgot to or want to change the country of origin on the league.

how does OOTP know you've entered in team names prior to changing nationality? I don't think it does or should for that matter. I realize this is a big inconvenience and hopefully Markus can find a solution (though I hope this is low on the priority list).

I think they do have to change because when you assign a city to a team, the game automatically assigns a city/state to that team based on the city name you have given it.

It doesn't. But my point is that the game doesn't HAVE to change them regardless of whether you've changed them or not.

Three scenarios:

1. You want completely custom team names (not nicks). You don't really care what names the game generates because you're going to change them all anyway. No need for the game to generate new names upon changed nationality.

2. You want partially custom team names. You want to change a few names from what the game provides. You need to press a single button to 'randomize team cities' (or whatever the proper term in game is). Then you can change whatever cities you want to.

3. You want completely random, game generated teams. You don't want to input anything. Simply press the 'randomize team cities' button.

Seems pretty clear to me that you don't need the auto change upon nation change function, especially if it's going to complicate setup. Now I could be forgetting a scenario. And if I am, then I could be very wrong on this. If I'm not missing a scenario, then I think it needs to be fixed. It's just like a lot of things last year were. They didn't HAVE to be fixed, but I'm damn sure glad they were, or I wouldn't be playing the game this year.

I really do see where you're coming from and I've had team names and cities changed on me in 2006 more times than I care to remember because I did something like add or subtract a team or a division. Unfortunately I disagree with you on this design decision - not that it matters if I agree with you or not - because I think the number of people who want a team to automatically be assigned to a city in the designated main country far outnumbers the number of people who want to set all cities manually. For that matter, considering you had hundreds of teams in your league, I'm surprised you had the stamina (already! the game's out an hour) to input 100 teams and all the cities/stadiums/administrata that go along with it.

One thing I had taken to doing was saving things as a template before I did anything that I thought might have potential for trouble like this. Wouldn't totally help you here but might at least give you an option. :vibert:

Saving as a template doesn't help if the nation of origin is wrong. I mean, unless you're creating on the fly and don't remember which team names you input. I've got all mine written down, so that's not a problem.

And I have no idea of the manual vs. automatic situation in regards to percentages of end users. But...I'm not saying to not have auto-assigned teams under the country. I'm suggesting that the random cities button is one extra button to press for those wanting that option, versus thousands of keystrokes for those that don't want it.

In other words, for those that want the option you mention, it will still be there, and easily accessible.

I want both types of players to 'win'.

Make sense?

Of course. If there were a way to do it that would make everyone happy, that would be nice.

I agree with ennuttage. This is an unneccesary inconvenience given that there's a button to regenerate the names if you want the game to do that. To be honest, I really don't understand why people are so against this idea. By changing it, it's one extra click if you want the new names. By leaving it as is, it's a whole lot of extra typing to get back the names you entered previously.

I've loggged an issue for this in the TT database so it'll stay on Markus' radar. It's TT#2968

You see what I'm saying about the fact that it already exists in-game though, right?

I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself well for you, or any powers that be.

I think I'm just banging my head against the wall again, anyway, though.

Thank you very much fhomess!!! I think it could make it much less frustrating for some. Maybe many.

I'm assuming that hard heads are never going to fix this? It's driving me NUTS again during league creation.

No reason not to try and resolve this redundancy.

edit: What's interesting is that the nicknames have 'stuck', but the city names have not. I have to believe that this is an easy fix for that reason alone.

Thank you for the update, Nutlaw. I really do appreciate it.

Now, that being said, I'm going to get this off my chest here and now.

If the only reason for this not changing is because 'that's the way it is', then I'm going to carry on with a real grudge with this game.

This'd be the first time I've seen heels dug in for no good reason whatsoever, that I can tell.

I'm as stubborn as the next German, but sheesh.

My apologies if it is far more complex than the nicknames, which do not change.

I just can't let this one die. When you're IMPORTING a league from a 6.12/6.5 game, you also have to re-enter the entirety of the league, assuming your league isn't based in the United States, to which all imported leagues default.

Sorry, but I just can't see how this is a design decision.
