Crash When Accessing Reports

OOTP8 crashes whenever I access one of the player reports. It doesn't seem to matter where I access them from. This is while playing a major league game. I have OOTP7 and played it a lot, and find it to be remarkably stable on the same computer. It's running Windows XP, with 2 GB memory, 2.0 Ghertz Celeron processor.

I might also add that while playing a major league game, I seem to get occasional crashes to the desktop. I hesitate to mention this because I know that it is impossible to do anything about such problems without more specifics. Is it possible that OOTP8 has a memory leak of some sort?

Which version of OOTP8 are you using, please? If you are not using the most recent version, 8.0.0.13, could you install that and let us know if you continue to have trouble?

I believe it is the latest version. According to the ootp8.exe properties, it is version 2.0.0.0. (I tried looking for the version in the registry, but I couldn't find an entry for OOTP8.) The time stamp on the ootp8.exe is 12/17 7:29 AM. This is the version which includes the coaches, etc., in the major-league game. I downloaded and installed the complete game when that patch became available.

Could I be having a virtual memory problem? I'm running tight on hard disk space. I have a 35.7 GB disk and only have 2.59 GB available. This is after OOTP8 is installed.

You can see the version number in the lower right hand portion of the opening OOTP 8 screen, but it does sound as if you have the most recent one.

Yeah, you could be having some sort of memory issue. Have you defragmented your hard drive lately? That couldn't hurt, as well as deleting a few unnecessary things off of it (obviously defrag after any deleting rather than before, ideally).

I already checked and my disk doesn't need defragging. I'll try deleting a few things from my drive. OOTP8 obviously does a lot of database transactions and they can chew up a lot of disk space for virtual memory.

This is the same issue I am having. See Crash to Desktop thread and see if it matched your issue.

I freed up some disk space and now have 4.8 GB free. That seemed to fix the problem with reports. As for the random crashes, I don't know. I'll have to play a while to see. It might be a good idea to run some tests to come up with a minimum free disk space recommendation.

Good to hear that fixed it. Have 79GB free here and still cannot open without crashing. Did you do anything else when attempting fixes?

Well, the problem with crashing to desktop when accessing player reports has reappeared, so it's not a simple matter of free disk space. I guess I'll have to put the game aside until it is stable.

When you say player reports, do you mean the HTML versions or the in-game Player Profile screen? Also, Dactyl, could you try uninstalling and reinstalling the game?

Okay, here's exactly what I do. I'm playing a major-league game. I go to the league main page. On the right-hand side of that screen, where the league standings are listed, I click on one of the teams to go to that team's page. Once I am on that page, I click on the BA Top Prospects (or whatever the exact phrase is) entry. That gives me a listing of the team's top ten prospects. I click on one of the players to bring up his report, and the game crashes. As I mentioned, since I freed up some more disk space, it doesn't happen every time. Since, I haven't investigated it, I can't be more specific than that.

I will uninstall and reinstall, but I probably won't be able to get to that until tomorrow.

kwoolsey indicated his game was not the quick-start, but a new major league game created from the main screen. Is this the case for you as well, Dactyl?

Yes, this happened when I started a new major-league game using that option which is new to OOTP8.

Obviously then, if someone doesn't beat me to it, we need to see if the problem resides in that specific module. When I get home tonight, I'll try to start up a league using that screen and see if happens to me.

Just FYI, I have this same problem. New ML game, any time I try to access an HTML report, the game crashes.

It appears that this exact behavior has already been reported and logged, so I will add a link to this thread to BZ 267.
