Stealing = Shorter Career

I have two very good looking young players on my roster that have burned out extremely quickly. Both of these players were 4 to 4.5 star players, and had productive seasons, but both have quickly gone from contact numbers around 13 to around 9. One is 27 the other is 24. Both have been very active stealing bases. Is there a correlation between stealing bases and "wearing out" a player, thus shortening his career, or is this just a coincidence.

Coincidence, as far as I can tell. I've never heard anything relating base stealers to shorter careers in OOTP.

Have they been injured badly at any time in their career. That could kill their ratings.

Nope, they were chugging along really well for 3 seasons hitting around .300, .370 OBP a little pop and then all of sudden they drop to .250s so I look closer at their ratings, and current and potention have both dropped significantly.

Thanks for the responses guys. I just want to make sure if my aggressive taking a toll on my players that I took that into consideration when I set up their game strategies and training options.

Tony Gwynn Jr.

I have Gwynn as my starting LF. In his rookie season he played the first half of the season like a potential MVP hitting .336 good obp and 60 steals. The second half he played poorly finishing at .280 with 90 steals. His ratings also dropped. I had him very active on the base paths. This upcomming season I will have him steal much less to see what happens.

In my game (2007 season) he became my every day CF in May / June hitting around .330 with less than 20 steals. In the new season his ratings dropped badly, so that I almost should send him down to AAA. But would you send a starter of your World Series winning team down to AAA?

On the other hand Cesar Izturis has really awful ratings, but is hitting over .500 now.

You've just run into OOTP randomly killing off young guys who are performing well. That's been discussed a lot lately. It's unfortunate that it happens.

Speed does go earlier than other tools and not only would that affect steals it would also affect OBP, especially those who hit a lot of grounders. However, I don't think this is what you're seeing. Yours sounds worse.

Contact tends to decline over time, with the peak around 22 or 23. That matches MLB data. In general, players whose only skills are hitting singles & stealing bases tend to lose their value pretty quickly, while players who hit home runs and draw walks often see their value rise into their 30's.

Tony Gwynn Jr. is sucking big time hitting .200 so far. He is stealing bases at a great ratio but rarely gets on base and strikes out a whole lot. At this point I am thinking of sending him down to AAA. not sure if his decline is due to some base stealing affect or if its just OOTP killing off another good spec. In any event I am saddened by this because Gwynn Jr. was suspoed to be the face of the franchise for years to come.

Well in my game he has awful ratings (see above) but hits for high average and extra bases without any power.
