Help with Spring training...

ok new to 08...I need a little help with spring training. This is for a on-line league.

I think I will expand the roster to 40 players and play my stars/regulars probably at 40% of the games, maybe train a few guys at new positions.

As far as pitcher go with a 6 man and work in my triple AAA arms in there.

Any suggestions? Anything you have learned and can pass along. The manual does not say that much.

Thanks in advance.

Honestly, I don't even pay attention in ST. I set my regular lineups and pitching staff, call up two or three extra relievers, a third catcher and an extra infielder and outfielder and usually don't even put them on the depth chart.

ST is a great time to start guys at new positions, or get them better at one of their weaker ones. I also use pretty much all my triple A or back end pitchers. I try not to let my stars play, or at least confine them to DH duties, because its meaningless and I don't want to get them injured.

The manual says that if players don't get some ST ABs they will be rusty when the season starts. I also bring in extra pitchers, at least 1 additional catcher and a bevy of position backups, then set my regular lineups. The AI manager is really good at letting starters play the first half of games then sub pretty much everyone out.

It's definitely true that ST is a great time to improve guys' defense, whether it's learning a new position or improving an existing one. Defense gets better very rapidly in ST.

Spring Training

I always click on Spring Training in the League Setup menu ...

But it does not seem to work for me. Is there anything else that needs to be done in order to activate ST? Is so, what?

ST doesn't exist in the minor leagues, but if you've got it on in Game Setup, it should work automatically in your Major League. It should start about 30-35 days before Opening Day.

Hmm, I'm at Spring Training, but I don't see where I can expand the rosters, set the lineups, etc as you point out above... where can I set all of these settings?

During spring training, I brought up folks to fill my 40-man roster. At the end of spring training, I sent all the guys back down. It wasn't a problem until I got to one player. When I tried to send him down, it said he was out of options and would have to pass through waivers.

I thought during spring training roster movement just occured with out waivers. If not, what exactly is the rule? And are the rules at the end of the season the same as the rosters expand?

Thanks.

Assuming general default settings...

Your Transactions screen should show your big league roster and several minor leagues. Look at the big league roster, it should say 25/40 somewhere to show that you have 25 of 40 possible players on the roster for Spring Training.

And if you've been around here since 2003 and don't know how to set the lineups.... I don't know what kind of help I'll be.

But did you go to the end of ST? Once you sim to the end of it, regular roster rules apply. That's if there are different roster rules during ST - I honestly have no idea. I try not to think too deeply into what OOTP does or doesn't do with some of the rules.

Thanks for the response. I guess what I really was asking was whether or not there is a period (i.e. spring training) where I can move players at will with out roster restriction. I did sim to the end of spring training so that may have been my problem--I should have cut the roster down before that, I guess.

No. In real life, there is no such thing as the 25-man roster until ST ends; the 40-man roster is the 'active roster'. At the end of ST, if you want to send anyone to the minors, he needs to clear waivers unless he has options left. That's how things are in real life and in OOTP. There should never be a point where you can move a guy with no options to the minors, without putting him on waivers; if there is, you've found a bug.

I'm an '03, but I haven't been on this board or played OOTP since around '04. Saw that OOTP8 was available at only $20 and figured why not Thanks for the help.
