Names.txt issue, Can anyone help with this?

I'm reaching out to anyone who might know a way to streamline a problem I have with my 70 season solo league, though kind of specially looking to Markus for help.

I started my solo league using QuestDog's custom name.txt file, not entirely realizing that it was missing numerous ethnicities to save K size and that swapping a new names. txt later would mess up the names of ALL the players last names in my league.

So I'm kind of stuck. I decided to bite the bullet and replace names.txt with the default names file and recompile the dats for 1980 and of course, all my last names are now different for all 4,993 players in the game. I exported the basic players CSV and can manually replace each last name by matching the player IDs between the game and my XLS, but with 5,000 players, that's going to be an ugly, tedious effort. I could leave well enough alone, but then I wont have extended ethnicities moving forward (All my Asian players names come out as Bob, Jim, etc).

Was hopeful someone may have run into this in the past or that Markus is still perusing the forums and could potentially offer some type of streamlined solution to remedy the issue. If not, well, manual edit, here I come.

Couldn't you do a dump with the current names, then open up both CSV files in Excel, sort by Player ID # in each, then simply cut and paste the names from the old file to the new one with one mouse click, and then re-import the players?? Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question though. If so, sorry.

That would be the best case senario, but I don't see anyway in the League Setup file to do a reimport of the CSV data dumps. it looks like you can only import active players and free agents, which is a good start, but I need to update retired players too and I don't see a way to do that using import, unless there's a tool or mod out there I'm not aware of.

I see, the games import function is a little more limited than I thought. Plus having never done a "dump" I'm not even sure what is included.

Have you ever made rosters before?? I haven't and so I might not have a clue about what I'm about to suggest. I'm probably way off base, but it seems those that make rosters do them in CSV files. It seems there should be a way to use the old CSV files to create a new historical league with that info. You know, create a new historical league with those players, include history when you create it, and then it would load the players from the old files and just use the new names.txt for the newly created players. Again though, I may not be anywhere close in my reasoning because I've never tried to mess with the csv files or dumps or imports and exports.

Just throwing stuff out there, sorta brainstorming I guess.

Can't really help with the task at hand, but I can tell you Markus is gone for a week.

I have messed with exporting rosters, modifying details (players ethnicities most often, but other general details as well, and reimporting those, and that works fine.

I also get where your going with the historical league suggestion. I'm just not sure if the CSV dump is formatted correctly for bringing back into OOTP9. So, if anyone is familiar wih exporting stats and setting up a historical league using that data, please bestow some of your knowledge on me. I'm not very familiar with that part of the game.

Doh! Well, he definietly deserves the time off. Maybe when he gets back next week. I'm in no hurry as yet.

If you're in no hurry, and until someone more knowledgable than I can help, perhaps I could suggest something in the interim. It might not help, but you may learn some things that aid in any future similar problems.

Maybe make a copy of the lahman DB folder (so the originals are untouched), then go into those CSV files and see how they are formatted compared to yours. You may get an idea of what info goes where, and you may be able to cut and paste from your files into a "one use only" dahman DB lookalike with your history in place of lahmans. If you ever did get there, then it seems to me it would just be a matter of creating a new historical league with the "new" lahman DB, then after creation, delete the "new" lahman and put the original lahman folder back in its place.

Again, may be of no help at all, just brainstorming. I tend to "get into" my league and history if I've played several seasons, so I understand your frustration. I hope you are able to work this one out.

Thanks OFG. That is one possible, and not a bad idea for a route to go. I've looked into creating a lahman for this league trying to migrate it from OOPT 6.5 before I rebooted it with OOTP 2007/8. At this point. I think the time involved was a lot there too.

Unless Markus or maybe one of the other developers knows some trick to mess with the names dat file or how to import the players CSV dump, I'm stuck with either of these two routes. I'd rather avoid losing 6 months of work and having to reboot again or having all the names reset moving forward.

Word to the wise. When you choose a modified names.txt, be sure it's the one you want. first_names.txt and ethnicities.txt can be changed and new dats swapped at your leisure, but not names.txt.

Markus is gone for awhile, so if you do experiment some in the meantime, good luck. Perhaps in about 2 weeks when Markus is back it would be a good idea to come back and bump this thread. (At the current rate of posts, in 2 weeks this may be on page 10 or more). Hopefully someone can help you better than I. Good luck to you.

There's lots of activity on the board these days so a nice bump to see if anyone has any further thoughts.

I may honestly wait until patch #2 to undertake this effort and move the league forward, so if anyone has suggestions, please devulge them here.

Saw Markus is back so I'm bumping this thread again to hopefully get his attention.

I've fixed my active rosters by exporting them, updating he last names in Excel and importing again. I've also fixed about 1,500 retired players manually (a task that SUCKS). I have ages 74-40 still to fix so if anyone (meaning Markus) has any ideas how to streamline that, I'm very open to the help.
