Repetitive Dropped Ball Occurrance
I was wondering if anyone else besides myself are experiencing problems with their third base man dropping the ball on pick off plays that should be an out?
I have a third base man, with a infield error rating of 6 (on a 1-5 scale) who drops 45%-50% of all pick off attempts. Every time I am successful in getting the runner, he drops the ball!!! (I have also had this happen in 2 other game/leagues that I have going on in different eras.) Last edited by Bottom Of The Sixth; 10-22-2009 at 12:34 AM. |

With respect, I might have tried a pickoff at third 2-3 times in well over a thousand (ballpark estimate) games played out. Since 3B don't play on the bag like 1B do, it's not out of the realm of possibilities that they would drop a throw quite often when running to third on a pickoff.
How many 3B pickoffs do you try to get such an accurate drop %?

I agree that being successful in picking off a runner on third base is very rare but it can be done!!
What gets by blood pressure rising is when I see my player(s) time & time again drop the ball, when it would have resulted in an out. I've seen it happen 2-3 times in one game before. I have yet to see a pitcher ever make a throwing error to third. (I've seen pitcher throwing errors when they throw to 1st & 2nd base, but never to 3rd.) I have also never seen a base runner get caught in a run down on any base. (example: pitcher makes a pick off attempt; once the pitcher starts to make a move, the base runner breaks for the next base, and he gets caught in a run down.) As for number of pick off attempts, it all depends on how my team is playing. If my pitcher is successful in shutting down another team's bats, I won't have any pick off attempts. However, if my defensive is making errors or my pitcher looks like he throwing "batting practice" to the other team, and I get alot of runners on base and on third, it won't be uncommon for me to make as many as 3-5 attempts during one game, just to 3rd base; that doesn't include attempts to 2nd or 1st).
