4 way tie for AL pennant in 1947

I just saw the craziest thing.

The year ended with Boston, Cleveland, Chicago, and the St. Louis Browns tied at 84-70.

They broke this tie with a round robin between Cleveland, Chicago and St. Louis. The winner of that was Cleveland, and Cleveland proceeded to beat Boston and gain entry into the World Series against my Pirates.

Very exciting stuff. I've no idea if that's how a tie would really be broken. (you'd think they'd have done a 4 team elimination tournament.)

Now we'll see if I can beat the Indians with my triple crown winning Kiner!

Such a tie in the real 1947 AL would have resulted in the four teams being divided into two pairs by random drawing. So, for example, you'd have the teams designated as A, B, C, and D. On the first day, B is at A and D is at C. The winners of those two games then meet on the second day, with the site determined by coin toss. The winner on the second day wins the pennant.

The NL would have followed a similar procedure except that it would have used a best-of-three series for both rounds.

Wow, that would have been quite an extension on the end of the season.
