BZ 1687: Cannot open pages in external browser

When I'm inside OOTP9, and click on the "Open in External Browser" button....nothing happens. I get an hour glass for a half second, but the page never opens. I tried setting my default browser to IE, I tried all the options in FF3, but nothing seems to work.

WinXP Home SP2
2.79 gHZ
1GB RAM

I have no popup blockers installed, and have them disabled in FF and IE.

Just tossing this out there because I don't really have a good answer - could this be a firewall issue?

I have all firewalls deactivated, and nothing. For kicks, I set "open help in external browser" and when I went to help...same problem.

It does sound like a problem with Internet Explorer or the browser. Or it could be a spyware program has hijacked your browser. Since it is happening in two different ones, that is what I suspect. I would check to make sure your computer is free of any spyware first, then re-install IE 7. If you are not using IE 7, then try upgrading to it. If re-installing does not help, then try to uninstall IE 7 from the control panel, try it with 6 and then try putting 7 on.

I do strongly suspect spyware on the computer. You may also try disabling any browser add-ons, like the Yahoo Toolbar. I use Google Toolbar and have no issues, but I have seen Yahoo Toolbar do something like this.

When you tell it to use the External Browser, all OOTP does is try to launch it with the link. If spyware has hijacked the browser, then it could be trying to send information to the site that collects your browsing history to sell. Since it is a local to the computer link, it could be fowling up the spyware.

Really? It works perfectly in OOTP8, though.

I'll give it a shot, even though I have no additional toolbars installed, and haven't used IE in a couple years.

did you try holding down CTRL plus hitting the button to open the external browser? The CTRL button can override pop up blockers some time. I know you said you don't have one on but just in case...

It seems a bit extreme to me to reinstall the browser. Might not hurt to run Ad Aware or something to clean it out though.

For the hell of it, I generated a league report, and all the pages are generating fine, and can be viewed with FF3 no problem from the hard drive. Yet, again, when I go that page internally within OOTP9, and click open in external browser...nothing.

Also, I tried a re-install of OOTP9. Nothing.

I'm loathe to uninstall FF3, but that's the only thing I have left I can do.

Okay, now I'm really confused. I uninstalled FireFox, and rolled back IE to the basic default IE that Windows XP came with...and still can't get it to work.

I give up.

Just saw someone else mention he was having problems with only certain pages not opening in the browser. Did you try opening pages from various different areas in the game to see if it wasn't just a bug with the screen you were trying? For example, go to your team's minor league report and see if you can open that in an external browser.

Not trying to hijack this post but I'm having the exact same problem. Has anyone come up with a solution?

None of the beta testers have been able to duplicate the error, so let's see if we can see anything that matches between the guys that it is happening to.

List your operating system, virus protection, spyware protection, if it is happening in both Firefox and IE, what versions of each you have, also what service pack for XP everyone has.

Let's see if we can get a match, like you are all using ....

Panda Internet Security
600MB of ram free while running OOTP
IE7 & Firefox 2.0.0.14 (default)
Game is located on the G drive (this would be different then most I assume)

Let me ask this - what page(s) are you on when you are trying to open to the browser?

Also, have you checked the response when you alter the preferences on this option (the pref menu, I mean)?

Here is one more thing to try.

Before you enter the game, open up your browser and minimize it or just keep it open in the background. (Try both ways), and then see if it works since the browser is already open.

1) what page(s) are you on when you are trying to open to the browser? ( All of Them )
2) have you checked the response when you alter the preferences on this option ( Just tried with no sucess - What pref. were you thinking of in particular? )
3) Before you enter the game, open up your browser and minimize it or just keep it open ( No luck either )

One more thing the "Powered by OOTP Baseball 9 - It's your game; play it your way!" message at the bottom of reports opens my browser and goes to the OOTP Developments site and the Baseball America Banner in the Top 100 prospects and best minor systems does take you to the Baseball America website.

I always have my browser open, and it makes no difference.

Thanks to everyone who is trying to come up with solutions, however.
