New to game and baseball

Hi i'm totaly knew to this game, but always have had a little weakness for both baseball and sim games, and since i have tried both FM and EHM I thought i might as well give this a try...

The problem is.. In the country i come from (Denmark) They don't really play baseball, so a lot of the game expressions i don't understand. Wich makes me lost.
I do believe i will buy the game when i get the money, because i love the depth this game has. But i really have no idea what the difference between a middle reliever and a closer is.. So if anyone have any links or annything that could help me with the expressions.

To answer your specific question:

A "closer" is a pitcher who is used at the end (usually only the last inning) of a game when the pitching team is leading by a small (1-3 run) margin.

A "middle reliever" is basically any other pitcher who is not a starting pitcher or the closer - the exception is the "set-up man" who usually works the inning before the closer.

If you want to get the hang of it a bit, you can always download the free version of OOTP5, so you can kind of get familiar with some of the terminology and financial aspects of the game until you can afford the quantum leap to 2007.

If it makes you feel any better, I don't know much of anything about "non-American" Football.

Last year, a baseball newbie (he appropriately named himself "baseball-newbie") started a thread here that got quite a few responses from people who were willing and able to answer his questions about baseball. He was in the same situation as you: new to the sport as well as new to this simulation game. You might do well to follow this link and read through that thread. Just bear in mind that at that time we were talking about OOTP 2006 if there are any references to that game. Baseball, though, has not changed! Here is the link:

Well after i have played for a while in a fictional league, i keep wondering. Is it the idea og baseball that you play 3 matches in a row against the same team on 3 days right after eachother, and then without a break plays a new one???
If that's so it must be quite expensive for baseball fans to see all matches??

That's how things are usually scheduled, although there are occasional 2 and 4 game series, as well. Back in the old days, the Pacific Coast League used to schedule 7-game series on 6 days: 1 game each day Monday through Friday and 2 games (a "doubleheader", which has pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur) on Saturdays. On Sundays, the teams would travel to their next series. On the bright side, the west coast has a much warmer climate, and they could play 200+ game seasons.

And, yes, it can get expensive, but people rarely attend every game - season ticket sales only account for a percentage of sales, and many of those are bought by businesses.

In europe our (non-american) football is nothing like that.. so often in the weekend baseballers are free??

Oh, mercy, no. The weekend games are, on average, the best-attended games during the regular season.

Baseball players don't get to see their families as much during the summer, but they all get most of the fall and winter off to sit around the house and count their money.

Baseball is the only sport that schedules games in "series", though. Basketball and Hockey is one game and then move on to the next city, usually with a day or two or three off in between games - then again, regular season basketball and hockey schedules are half the length of baseball schedules, so they can afford the travel days more.

This thread needs an appearance by LGO, our resident scheduling guru.

Yeah they are.. And then there is theese american fellows who works their arse off every****ing day during the summer..

maybe you could teach me more about football, haha.

it's too bad, i love watching soccer/football but all we get on TV is the terrible US playing friendly's against bad teams.

I have to wait every 4 years to watch football, it's the saddest thing ever. I'm from LA though, maybe Beckham will do some good, but in my opinion, hes not great for a bad team. He'll probably bring a new confidence to the team, but for a guy thats not that athletic, I don't see him taking over games as he should.

Aw, heck no! I watched a game of the World Series with an old man from England once. I was trying to explain the game to him, and he was trying to explain some similarities to Cricket to me!

Its funny cause i'm the complete opposite as an american who loves OOTP and other sports sim games i ended up buying FM just because of all the great depth that it has even though i knew almost nothing about soccer football. Just from playing the game and looking up strategies and terminology online, European Football is now one of my favorite sports to watch.
