Newbie Question

Hi ! I am totally new to the game and I have encountered a problem I am not sure how to deal with.

I started a Major League Game, managing my favorite Cleveland Indians. The team has its 40-man roster full and has already 4 players with major league contracts designated for assignment. I cannot proceed in the game before settling their DFA status, but I do not exactly know what to do. I do not want to trade or release these players but cannot keep them all on my active roster. If I try to assign them to the minors after adding them to the secondary roster the game tells me that they have to clear waivers first.
Does that mean the assignment is not possible ? How can I proceed with the game without releasing those players or adding them to the 25-man roster ?

I am sure this is a bit of a stupid question but I really do not know what to do and would appreciate your help. THX a lot in advance ...

Not a stupid question.

I am assuming that these players have reached the end of the DFA time and you therefore can no longer see if they would clear waivers (three more days, by default) so that you can send them down to the minors. They must be out of minor league options or have the right to refuse assignment if you need to waive them first.

In this case, the usual response is what you see on the screen prompt: must be assigned (which you cannot do) or released (or traded, by the way). The only other thing that I can think of doing would be to look at these players, see which ones are worth keeping and, if any, play musical chairs with a corresponding number of players on your 40-man and active roster.

That is, waive and DFA some other marginal players to make room while you put the original DFA guys on the rosters. This will give you time to waive some combination of these players and, if they clear, assign some of them to your minor league teams.

Thanks a lot. In my understanding, the problem is caused by the program setting these players on DFA status with no time left right off the start. If I had designated them for assignment myself I would have had enough time to let them clear waivers so this problem will not accur anymore once solved.

However, I decided to try start a historical game starting 1997 instead because I do not like to ratings the program gave some of my players. By using the real data through the 2007 season for the initial calculation (which the quick start does not do imo) I feel to get more realistic player ratings.
