OOTP Noob: Worth Buying 8 Now?

Hey guys.

I'm a HUGE baseball fan, and so a few of my friends have convinced me to check out OOTP, telling me it's right up my alley. I tried out the demo of the 2006 version (I think), and I enjoyed it.

However, I don't know the differences between that version and 8/2007. In addition, I noticed that 9 should be coming out really soon, and I don't know whether or not I should purchase something that clearly is going to be outdated soon. Anyone have any advice? Feel like convincing me either way?

Also: Though I'm fairly certain there isn't, is there a way I could pre-order 9, and get 8 for the next couple weeks to tide me over (if there is a demo, or if they are letting people do that...)

Thanks guys, everyone here has seemed really friendly from what I've been reading, so hopefully someone can help me out!

OOTP 2006 was, too many, an aberration in the OOTP Series. Personally I like to consider it a growing pain, it had its flaws but was the beginning of something great.

Not sure if there's a demo for OOTP8 but you can and should try the OOTP 2007 demo. Depending on how quickly you play through your demo time limit, it should hold you over until OOTP9 is released.

If you've made your mind up that you're definitely going to buy OOTP9 then I also strongly recommend pre-ordering.

I agree with Bruce about OOTP 2006; steer clear of that if it is still being offered. I also agree with him up to a point about the OOTP 2007/8 demo, that point being where the demo ends because it is limited as are all demos. Is that going to be enough to tide you over until OOTP 9 is ready? Notice I said ready, not released. Rather than typing any further, let me link to this post in order to finish my opinion on this:

Worth Buying?

A firm rebuttal to my position!

Thanks for all the replies, especially this one!

Here's my question. From what I've been reading, 9 is going to be released in May (what distinction are you trying to make between it being ready, and it being released?), yet in the post that you linked, you made reference to the patches that "really" delay the game until the fall. Is it your argument that in actuality, 9 won't be worth playing until the fall, because it will be too buggy?

I'm trying to make sure that I'm getting the best bang for my buck... as I am a poor college student, so that's sorta important!

Thanks for all the helps guys, I've just downloaded the "try-and-buy" version of 8, so hopefully that is, in actuality, a demo of the game that I can try out to see if I enjoy. Thanks!

OK, then I will tailor my answer according to this new question from you and information about you.

IMO and AFAIK, no version of OOTP has ever been released so buggy as to be unplayable. Many of the bugs that need to be detected, reported, analyzed, and addressed by the developers over the weeks and months after release are by and large not relevant for beginner to moderately experienced game players. However, if you are really into baseball simulations, sweating every detail, microanalyzing every result, then you want the best version possible. These are the game players who help find the problems and wait for the resolutions before finally getting into the game for pleasure.

Since you are new to the game, and perhaps new to the genre itself, then I would say that you are probably not one of those fanatical people (or will not be for a while, but just wait ). Hence, I think you would probably enjoy OOTP 9 right from the beginning, just make sure that you keep coming back for patches. Also, since you are "a poor college student," then buying both OOTP 8 and 9, one after the other, is not a good idea for you. Graduate and get that good job first!

So Bruce was right - pre-order OOTP 9 to save money and play the demo for now; and whizkid was right - wait for OOTP 9. Welcome to the community, and enjoy the game!

I am also in this thinking mode. OOTP8 or 9, but having DL the demo and having only 2 weeks of demotime I'm desperate that time between end of next week and the actual relase of OOTP9 will delay.

After reading many info of OOTP9 it seams scouting is the heavy news, OK sound is added and perhaps some benchclearing brawl. Hm to see such I can only watch my sons ice-hockey games, and thatīs NOT a PC game but the real deal.

I know the money stuff and buying the OOTP8 and almost at the same pre-order OOTP9 to get that discount troubles my mind....

Still have many things to clear up on what this game can do.

Probably ending up with BOTH version by the end of summer....

Well, I'm going to be a poor college student for a while, lol, as I'm going to graduate school after this to get my PhD (hopefully)... so that's that :-P

Thanks! I downloaded the demo, and I'm absolutely loving it. It starts in 2007, which was a shock for me at first, because I was wondering where certain players were, and things like that, but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

Looks like I'm going to pre-order 9, and enjoy that when it hits shelves.

Does anyone have a better idea of when in May it's going to be released?

Stay tuned to the main discussion board for that. And hey, don't let OOTP drag down your grades! Seriously now, it could do that. Hit those books, mister!
