Rule 5 Draft

How do commissioners handle the Rule 5 Draft? The big thing I'm trying to figure out is how I'm going to get a list of all the eligible players to my owners. Is there any easy way to do this?

For the actual making of picks I'm sure most people use their forums. Or is pre-submitting a list of selections the preferred method?

We do a 1 round live draft during a regularly scheduled sim. Several of the picks (or passes) actually get done in a forum.

With the change to the Rule 5 draft concerning eligibility, the number of decent players available is around zero.

Change in eligibility? Is this something different than what's in the OOTP 8 manual? The info I'm working with is that any player who signed at 19 or older is eligible after 3 pro service years and and anyone who signed at 18 or younger is eligible after 4 pro service years.

By the way, when the Rule 5 draft arrives can owners see the same draft interface which lists the players that the commissioner can?

From what I gather the manual is correct. It's just that the MLB rule was changed (and the OOTP rule too for OOTP 2007/ 8) so players can be held by their clubs a bit longer. This changed two seasons ago, I think.

I hate, hate, HATE, HATE HATE the Rule 5 draft in OOTP. There are so many broken things related to the Rule 5 that it makes my head spin.

For starters, every year we have a TON of guys show up eligible for the Rule 5 draft even though they are signed to major league contracts. It's because anybody that happens to get signed during the sim leading up to the Rule 5 gets left in DFA, and the game doesn't check for a major leauge (monetary) contract.

Anyway, aside from that, we hold the Rule 5 draft 100% via list, sent by each owner to the Commish. No list = no Rule 5 pick.

The other major, major problems with Rule 5 picks is that 1) There is no way to return a pick, and 2) Rule 5ers are able to be released by the team that selected them.

In the GUBA we've come perilously close to canceling the Rule 5 draft completely until it's no longer so horribly broken in OOTP, however last year's Rookie Of The Year was a rule 5 pick - so there's obviously some use to be had still.

We do it strictly by list, despite the few issues with it.

We're coming up on our Rule 5 Draft and I wanted to double-check about if there's a quick and easy way for owners to see the full list of players who are draft eligible?

What I do is sim up to the draft. Give them a league file so they can see the Rule 5 Draft screen, which shows eligible players. I then hold the draft in an AIM chatroom before the next sim, input the draft results and then run the sim.

Ah, that's good to know that they'll be able to see the list once we arrive at the Rule 5 Draft. We'll probably conduct things similarly to what you're doing, then. Big load off my mind there; thanks for the response!
