1907 World Series

BOX SCORES

Catobase Updated!

After losing the past two World Series, the Red Sox hoped to do things differently this autumn. Meanwhile, the Cardinals were playing in their first World Series. In Game 1, The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the first and the score remained 1-0 until the top of the 9th. In that inning, Boston got four straight singles off Mordecai Brown with 1 out. That gave them a 3-1 lead, and Norwood Gibson shut down St. Louis 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th to give the Red Sox the first win of the series.

In Game 2, the Cardinals scored 5 runs off Frank Oberlin. The Red Sox made it 5-3 in the 4th but St. Louis went on to add 9 more runs and win 14-6. Game 3 was a different story. Boston scored 2 runs off Ed Karger in the 1st, but the Cardinals scored in the 4th to make it 2-1. A Freddy Parent double increased Boston's lead to 3-1. St. Louis did not have another baserunner the rest of the day as Ralph Glaze and Boston took a 2-1 series lead.

In Game 4, Mordecai Brown tossed a 9-hit shutout and the Cardinals tagged Norwood Gibson for 7 runs, evening the series. Everyone knew Game 5 was a big key to the series, and the game was scoreless until Boston scored a run in the bottom of the 5th. The Red Sox added a run in the 6th and two more in the 7th. But in the top of the 8th, Frank Oberlin hit the leadoff man. Then John McGraw singled, and both runners advanced a base on an error by RF George Stone. After getting the next two batters out, Oberlin allowed a 2-run single to Emmet Heidrick. Bill Keister followed with another single, and Bobby Wallce hit a 2-run double to tie the game.

Mike Donlin hit a 1-out triple in the top of the 10th off reliever Rube Kroh. He scored two batters later on a sac fly. Down 5-4 in the bottom of the 10th, Boston's Jake Stahl led off with a single off Bob Wicker. Catcher Ossee Schreckengost doubled and Stahl held at 3rd. Freddy Parent stroked a double to deef right field, scoring both runners and winning the game.

In Game 6 Boston scored 2 runs in the 3rd, and by the time the Cardinals reached their final at bat in the 9th, they found themselves down 3-1. Bill Keister reached base on an error to lead off the inning, and Bobby Wallace singled him to 3rd. 1B Ed Konetchy's fly out was too shallow to score the runner, but Al Burch got a pinch hit single that drove Keister in. George Barclay grounded out, and with the tying run on 3rd, John McGraw grounded out to end the series.

Winner, 4-2: Boston Red Sox, 1st Championship

MAtt, did you miss the Senators in the preseaon write-ups? I'd commented on the weak rookie class, but they have Walter Johnson (plus others)

Crap I did... and my all-time favorite old time pitcher too Henry Gehring & Oscar Graham were secondary rookie pitchers who I probably wouldn't have mentioned.

Washington 1907

P Walter Johnson, "The Big Train"

Thanks, it'll be fun watching the Big Train dominating for a long time.

My only fear is what his winning % will be like paying for the sorry Senators.

Maybe the Senators fortunes change in this version?

Although, look what's happened to Mathewson

I've been doing something a little different with how pitchers are imported. I wish I had started before Mathewson was imported. I've never ran a replay with either Young or Mathewson having great careers.

ok, that's more like it.

Eddie Collins the HoF 2B and Barry his MI partner in the $100,000 infield.

Cravath was the active HR leader until some guy named Ruth blew by him.

Neal Ball who had the first unassisted triple play (20th century)

Chief Wilson who has the single season triples record (36)

He has a *ton* of power (14) but I'm having trouble getting him in the lineup ahead of Patsy Dougherty or George Stone. None of those 3 play CF. I'll check BB-Ref.com to see if any of them ever played there and then maybe I'll displace CF Charlie Hemphill.

1908 World Series

BOX SCORES

After playing the Red Sox for the pennant, the A's ace pitcher, Chief Bender, could not pitch until Game 2. In Game 1, they had Wledon Henley, who was nearly equally as devastating to opponents this season. However, Henley allowed a 1st inning run when Bill Keister walked and Bobby Wallace doubled. The Keister scored on a sac fly by Homer Smoot. Both Henley and St. Louis' Ed Karger were excellent the rest of the game. After 8 innings, the score was still 1-0. In the top of the 9th, Cardinals Ed Konetchy and Lee DeMontreville hit 1-out singles. A wild pitch by Henley advanced the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Then Konetchy scored on a sac fly. In the bottom of the inning, Slim Sallee came in to pitch after Karger was pinch hit for and nailed down the A's with a 1-2-3 9th.

The Cardinals came right out in Game 2 and scored three 1st inning runs off Bender. Meanwhile, Mordecai Brown allowed only 1 run through 8 innings. In the bottom of the 9th, St. Louis had a 5-1 lead. Then with one out, Eddie Collins reached base when Bender's throw to first pulled 1B Dave Fultz off the bag. Bris Lord followed with a double that scored Collins. Lord moved to third on the throw home, and he scored when Danny Hoffman hit a sac fly. Harry Armbruster hit a 2-out pinch hit single to keep the inning alive, but Jack Barry grounded out to end the game.

The Cardinals traveled home with a 2-0 series lead. In Game 3 rookie Irv Higginbotham faced off against fellow rookie Biff Schlitzer. The Cardinals scored the first run in the 2nd, but Philly tied the game 1-1 in the 5th. With two runners on base and one out in the bottom of the 7th, Lee DeMontreville hit a 2-run double and then scored on a Ed McFarland double. The Cardinals went on to win 4-1.

In Game 4, Henley and Karger locked horns in an impressive pitching duel that left both teams with a total of just 13 hits and no runs after 8 innings. Karger enduced three ground outs in the top of the 9th, and in the bottom of the 9th Karger struck out Konetchy and got DeMontreville to fly out. The game appeared to be entering extra innings. Then catcher Art Hoelskoetter stepped to the plate. He had not had a single at-bat in the World Series but entered this game in the 8th after McFarland was pinch hit for in the 7th. On a 1-1 pitch from Henley, Hoelskoetter made his one chance at the plate count by hitting a homerun than ended the game and won St. Louis their first World Series.

Winner, 4-0: St. Louis Cardinals, 1st Championship
