Old Hoss only had 2 career taters, and his most similar batter is Putsy Caballero.

He's one of my faves now Speaking of favorites, how is Jap Barbeau doing?

Chicago

P Jim Scott, "Death Valley"
--- Age 20, 10(116)/7/6 talent
--- How's this for an interesting background story (from BaseballLibrary.com):

Quote:
At the start of his rookie year, Scott was hailed in the Chicago press as "an Ed Walsh, Mordecai Brown and Cy Young combined." Scott relied on a spitter and a fadeaway (screwball)... The streaky Scott threw two career one-hitters, and a no-hitter against Washington on May 14, 1914, which he lost in the 10th inning. Finished in 1917, he became a minor league umpire after serving in France during WWI. Published reports in the 1920s say that he formed a religious cult outside of Los Angeles.

P Jack Quinn
--- Age 25, 9/8/7 talent
--- In MLB, this guy pitched every season from age 25-49 except for 1916-17 (WWI?). I wish I could set a player's longevity in ootp so he could last that long in my sim.

P Jack Warhop, "Chief"
--- Age 24, 9/7/6 talent

1B Clyde Engle, "Hack"
--- Age 25, 7/8/6/6/6 talent

3B Jimmy Austin, "Pepper"

League ERA: 2.75

New York Giants

The Giants improved 19 games from last season and won their first pennant since 1895. Since that pennant, they have finished between 14 and 34 games out every season but one - 1907 when they were 8 games back. Also since that last pennant, they had never finished higher than 4th (1907 and 1901). This was a team victory for the Giants with no standout stars on offense. Their .253 team average was 5th in the 8-team NL. And they scored just the 4th most runs. Their 2.48 team ERA was 2nd in the league, and this was clearly their strength. Perhaps what put them over the top was the appearance of Top Rookie Rube Marquard who led the league with a 1.74 ERA. Team ace Hooks Wiltse finished 4th in ERA.

This is awesome. I always wanted to try this out, but I was too lazy to go into the details of it.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the Red Sox with Babe Ruth.

Are you going to ignore the 2 World Wars?

1909 World Series

BOX SCORES

Catobase Updated! Player pages still loading as I post this

The Giants came out swinging in their first World Series. By the end of the 5th inning, they had tagged AL Top Pitcher Norwood Gibson for 6 runs. The Red Sox could get nothing going against Hooks Wiltse, who allowed just 3 hits, and New York won 6-0. Game 2 was another story. The Red Sox scored a run in the 2nd off NL Top Rookie Rube Marquard and added 7 more runs in the 3rd. They went on to beat New York 9-1 with the victory going to AL Top Rookie Joe Wood.

In Game 3, the Giants looked to regain the series lead. The score was 5-2 in New York's favor going into the bottom of the 8th. Jake Stahl and Bill Carrigan led off the inning with singles off Doc Crandall. Then Heinie Wagner loaded the bases when rookie SS Tillie Shafer booted a hard hit grounder. Pitcher Ralph Glaze helped his own cause with a bases clearing double that knotted the score at 5. After a sac bun moved Glaze to third, another rookie, Tris Speaker, singled him home for the eventual winning run.

Game 4 was a rematch of team aces. Boston's Norwood Gibson lost Game 1 to Hooks Wiltse, but both pitchers were excellent on this day. The Giants were up 2-1 until Jake Stahl hit a 2-run single in the 7th to give Boston the lead. Not wanting to fall behind 3-1 in the series, Boston CF Curt Bernard hit a triple off Gibson with 2 outs in the 9th and scored when Tille Shafer's grounder toward the hole on the right side of the infield was misplayed by Hobe Ferris. The game went to the 13th inning with all pitchers doing well. New York's Christy Mathewson had a 1-2-3 12th inning against the heart of the Boston order, but he allowed a leadoff single to Top Batter Harry Lord in the 13th. After getting Gravvy Cravath to fly out, catcher Bill Carrigan reached base on another Tillie Shafer error. George Stone then got a pinch hit single, scoring Lord and winning the game.

In Game 5, New York took a 2-0 lead on Joe Wood. Then in the 6th, Wood walked to lead off the inning, and one out later, stole second. Boston catcher Pat Crisham was so surprised by the move that he threw the ball into CF, allowing Wood to move to 3rd. With two outs, Jake Stahl singled Wood home. In the top of the 7th, Moose McCormick doubled Crisham home, but Crisham was thrown out at the plate by LF Patsy Dougherty. Then in the bottom of that inning, Cravath led off with a walk, followed by a Charlie Hemphill single. Freddy Parent reached base on an error by 2B Larry Doyle, allowing Cravath to score and tie the game. A sac bunt advanced both runners to 2nd and 3rd. Then after Joe Wood struck out, Dougherty again helped the team with a 2-run double, giving Boston a 4-2 lead. The Red Sox added another run in the 8th on a Jake Stahl home run, and Boston won the game 5-2.

This was Boston's 4th trip to the World Series in 5 years, and their second championship in three years.

Winner, 4-1: Boston Red Sox, 2nd Championship, 4th Pennant

New York Giants, 3rd pennant

New York Giants

Needless to say, the Giants simply dominated the NL this season, winning the pennant by 24 games. Their 107 wins was easily a major league record and 10 more wins than the previous NL record of 97 set by the 1906 Cubs. CF Fred Snodgrass was named Top Rookie and Top Batter. He led the league in OPS and stolen bases while finishing 2nd to Honus Wagner in the batting race. Last season's Top Rookie, Rube Marquard, was named Top Pitcher. This team is young and talented, a deadly combination that could put them atop the league for many years to come.

Some good names breaking in this year. Hippo Vaughn, Fred Snodgrass, Zack Wheat.

Why did Fred Merkle only start this year? His famous mistake was made at the end of the 1908 pennant race. He had over 100 ML games played before 1910.

The Ankit database I use starts players when they got a reasonable amount of playing time. He had 47, 41 and 236 AB from 1907-09. Personally, I would think the 236 would be enough so I'm not sure what the exact cutoff is.

The A's were leading the AL late in the season. Then they lost four straight to close out September. After winning their first four October games, they dropped two more which allowed the Red Sox to tie them for first. Both teams won their final 3 games, and for the 2nd time in three years they would play a single game to decide the pennant. Two years ago, the Athletics won that game behind Chief Bender. But this year, Bender lost 4-1 as Joe Wood dominated the Philly offense. The Highlanders improved 10 games from last season, posting the best season in club history. Meanwhile, the Browns won 27 more games from a year ago, moving from 7th to 4th and also posting a club-best season. While still struggling, the White Sox did improve by 15 game from their 100-loss 1909 campaign. However, Washington lost 18 more games from last season and both Detroit and Cleveland had the worst seasons in their team's decade long histories.

1910 World Series

BOX SCORES

New York sensation Rube Marquard started things off on a good note for the Giants. He held the Red Sox scoreless until the 9th when they scratched out 2 runs. New York won 4-2, defeating 5-time Top Pitcher Norwood Gibson. In Game 2, Doc Crandall held the Red Sox to just two runs for the second day in a row, defeating Boston's young star Joe Wood 6-2.

Traveling to New York, few gave Boston any chance of staying in the series for any more than a Game 5. They beat Hooks Wiltse 3-1 in Game 3. Then they tagged Marquard for 5 runs in front of his home crowd to even the series at 2 games a piece.

In Game 5, the Giants once again had Joe Wood's number, and Doc Crandall pitched even better than Game 2. The 4-1 win gave New York the series lead as they returned to Boston. In Game 6, the bats came out on fire, scoring 7 runs in the first inning, a 4-3 score in Boston's favor. A Moose McCormick homerun tied the score in the 4th. Then in the 6th, Boston strung together a walk, two singles, a sac fly along with an error by 3B Art Devlin to take a 6-4 lead. With two outs, Tris Speaker hit a 2-run triple to blow things open, and the Red Sox went on to win 9-4, tying the series yet again.

The final game was the 3rd matchup of Marquard vs Gibson. The game quickly turned sour for Red Sox fans as New York scored 7 runs in the first two innings and went on to win 9-4.

Winner, 4-1: New York Giants, 1st Championship, 4th Pennant

Boston Red Sox, 5th pennant

Looks like the A-s and Red Sox are set to battle it out for the next few years. Should be interesting.
