He has had quite an amazing start. I've been surprised that he has been able to maintain this level despite his contact trickling down. |

This year's team was very similar to the 1911 version. They had six starters hit better than .300. Joe Jackson led the league in OPS in his second season. What is really frightening is that the core of this team is still very young. The Red Sox are still very talented, but they did not match up to Philly this season. They are not as young as the A's, but they still have youth on their side. Only Norwood Gibson (35), George Stone (34) and Jake Stahl (33) are getting up in years. Thanks for including some non-starters in the team by team stats. I hope that it doesn't add too much work for you. It's interesting to see players who are not starting but were big names in real life or are personal favourites.

That A's line-up is insanely good. I wonder if the pitching holds up long enough for them to really have a dynasty. They had lots of talent in the mid-late 20's, wonder how much of that started with them?

When these guys get older in the mid-20's, they'll have Cochrane, Foxx, Simmons, Grove, Bishop, Dykes, etc breaking in. It's going to last awhile in Philly. Especially since Connie Mack can't sell them all like in real life.

EDIT: And the Red Sox can't sell off their players in the 20s either. |

1912 World Series
BOX SCORES The series opened in Philadelphia, and home town fans were flabbergasted when the Giants scored 6 runs off ace Chief Bender in the 2nd inning. However, the A's scored 4 runs off rookie Jeff Tesreau in the 3rd and added another run in the 4th to make i 6-5. In the top of the 8th, Fred Snodgrass hit a solo homerun. It proved to be a key run because in the bottom of that inning the A's scored a run on a sac fly. They continued to load the bases in that inning, but CF Bris Lord grounded out to end the threat. The A's went three up, three down in the 9th and New York took Game 1. The next game was dominated by the A's as Harry Krause allowed just 1 run off 5 hits in a 5-1 victory over Rube Marquard. The A's continued to dominate after the two teams traveled to New York. They pounded Christy Mathewson for 6 runs in 4 innings en route to a 14-4 shellacking. The tables turned in Game 4 as the Giants pummelled Bender the the tune of a 11-2 win. Then in Game 5, the A's scored 5 runs in the first inning off Marquard and wound up winning 9-4. This was obviously no pitching dominated World Series. Back in Philly, the Giants jumped out with 5 first inning runs off Weldon Henley. The A's scored 2 in the 2nd but New York scored a run in the 4th and 5th innings to take a 7-2 lead. In the bottom of the 5th, things fell apart for Giants starter Hooks Wiltse. The A's strung together three singles to lead off the inning, and then Matty McIntyre reached base when 2B Larry Doyle muffed a ground ball. Joe Jackson walked to plate the second run of the inning, and then four more singles followed. Catcher Jack Lapp grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, but the seventh run of the inning scored in the process. After the final out was recorded, Philly had taken a demoralizing 9-7 lead. Only four more base runners reached base the rest of the day, and when Art Devlin grounded out to end the 9th inning, the A's had won their first World Series since 1903. Winner, 4-2: Philadelphia Athletics, 3rd Championship, 5th Pennant New York Giants, 7th pennant |

1913 National League
Note: Each team is linked to their catobase page you you can view stats there. I'm trying to find a quicker way to do this so I can blow thru a few seasons. Player pages have not been updated in catobase yet. Please let me know if any of the links are wrong. Code:

They once again took both the Top Batter and Top Pitcher awards, but this time they went to first time recipients Fred Merkle and Hooks Wiltse. Fred Snodgrass finished 4th in OPS and added the first Gold Glove to his mantle. Braves rookie Rabbit Maranville won a GG in his first season although he hit just .212. After finishing in 4th place last season (despite a 73-81 record) the Dodgers returned to the cellar where they have spent 9 of the past 11 seasons. In what was likely his final season, Honus Wagner, 39, hit .300 (5th in the NL) and ended the season with 2,831 hits and a .320 career average. Also 39, Philly's Nap Lajoie's first hit of the season was the 3,000th of his career. He finished the season with 3,181 hits and a .321 average. The two of them rank 2nd and 3rd all time behind Billy Nash's 3,492 hits. The tug of war continued with Boston winning their 6th pennant in 9 years. And those three pennants Boston hasn't won? Yep, they all belong to Philly (as well as two of the four pennants before Boston started their stretch). This Boston-Philly rivalry is going to be great. I see Philly added a couple of decent pitchers.
Here's hoping Wagner and Lajoie come back for one more. Both are still among the league leaders. |

I know, but since Matt speculated that this might be the end of the line for him, I was wondering where his talent ratings were at. I should have probably written talent ratings instead of stats. Seeing that he finished the season at .300 makes me think he has another year or two left in him. I want to see him get to #3000 and was wondering how likely a chance he'd have.

Yes he's declining. I wouldn't be the least bit shocked to see him retire now that he's 39. But, if he sticks around I'm still not sure he can get the 169 hits. He only had 161 in 1912 and 142 this season.
