Washington Senators - 1901
Decided to pick OOTP back up after a lenghty hiatus. I've always liked doing historical sims and that's what I'm doing with this one.
I'm using manager mode and controlling the Senators. No financials yet, no injuries and fatigue until everyone can field a 25 man roster. I've got 16 guys on the team right now so I can barely fill all the positions. I'll turn injuries and fatigue on in a couple years when I can actually field a 25 man roster. The owner is normal and expects .50 this year. After looking over the team and making a few tweaks I think that's doable. I haven't quite decided what format I'll use for the reports, but I'll come up with something. I've always been an avid reader of the dynasties here and I'll likely pull a little from all of them. So with that, feel free to ask any questions, make comments, or whatever. |

Finally got some offense. After scoring just 3 runs in the first two games, both losses, we busted out for 11 runs on 15 hits and avoiding a sweep. Watty Lee started and held on for the win after allowing 5 runs in the 9th inning making the final score 11-9. Lee also got in on the action with a 2-run double.
Needless to say, I was quite pleased with the team. If we can continue to score this many runs, this season might not be so bad. |

First month is on the books and we're sitting at 15-14, just 3 games back of Baltimore and Milwaukee. The AL is super tight, though cause we are sitting 6th despite being that close.
Mike Grady (.354/3/16) and Pop Foster (.315/2/15) really carried the team offensively and Bill Carrick was the surprise of the month going 5-1, 3.02 ERA. Win Mercer had a 2.28 ERA, but just a 4-4 record. He's just getting 3.2 runs per game and that just isn't going to cut it. The young Case Patten was definitely a disappointment, going just 2-6 with a 4.57 ERA. Coming into the season he was expected to be a my ace and he just hasn't been there early on. Hopefully that turns around later on. Without him, yeah I can manage .500, but if he can start making some pitches, I might be able to make a run at the pennant. |

May is now behind us and we're still lurking, just not quite there. A 14-13 month puts at 29-27, 4 games back now. Baltimore has a 2 game lead now and we're still in 6th place, demonstrating how close and hard fought the AL has been this year.
Mike Grady struggled a bit this month and his average fell to .306. He still has 6 homers and 25 RBI. Tim Jordan stepped up to fill that void, (.269/7/41) and hitting .309/4/23 this month. Pop Foster is also having a pretty consistent year (.285/2/31) after two months. Case Patten continued to struggle, going 2-5 in May, so I had to try look elsewhere for some pitching. I sent him to Cincy in exchange for Doc Newton (5-6, 3.38). The rest of the staff had solid months and all three of them have winning records and the highest ERA is 3.55, belonging to Watty Lee. If Newton pitches even remotely like he did in Cincy, where he was pretty popular, I still like our chances to make a run at the pennant. We still have a chance at just 4 games back on June 1st. |

First season is over, with some mixed results. The hitting is ok and the pitching straight up sucks. The only problem with that, is I don't think that I get any pitching until Walter Johnson in 1907. My only hope will be picking up some through a trade. Even that can be kind of tricky at times.
Mike Grady had a really solid year (.312/14/76) leading the team in average and homers. He was second in RBI and runs scored (90). His 14 homeruns also tied for the league lead. Tim Jordan was also really solid and was consistent contributor (.278/12/104). He was 3rd on the team in BA, 3rd in runs scored, 2nd in homers, and led the team in RBI. He was also tied for 5th in RBI in the league. Bill Everitt also had solid contributions all year (.296/4/35), stealing 53 bases andleading the team with 93 runs scored. It was the severe lack of pitching that really hurt the team this year. Outside of Bill Carrick (17-14, 2.81) it was just plain bad. Doc Newton was ok after picking him up for Case Patten, going 14-13, 3.55 after trading for him and finishing at 19-19, 3.52. Win Mercer and Watty Lee, despite starting year out alright, both finsihed with 23 losses and just generally stinkin up the joint. Code:

I'm gonna switch to a format I've used in the past. It's a diary of sorts of myself, in this case. Without going into the exact process, I leave manager mode for all the perks of having a girlfriend as well as having kids to continue my line and play baseball after me, while at the same time letting the computer run the team.
After creating a player and selecting a random position, I end up with a starting pitcher with very good talent, who in a couple years could very well be the ace of the team. I didn't change the ratings or the position, just the name (Don Ayers). So now witha slight refocus we get 1902 underway. |
