End of the Year Awards and Notes
Rookie of the Year American League ROY: Chappie McFarland, SP (PHA)- The Athletics collapsed at the end of the season, but young Chappie McFarland certainly added himself to an already stellar Athletics pitching staff. He finished the season with a 17-15 record in 307.2 innings, compiling a 3.57 ERA and 107 strikeouts. National League ROY: Chief Bender, SP (BSN)- As we saw throughout the entire 1903 season, Bender was an excellent addition to a relatively weak Beaneaters squad. In 270.1 innnings, he had a 14-10 record for Boston, pitching his way to an ERA of 3.00 with 153 strikeouts. Most Valuable Pitcher American League MVP: Joe McGinnity, SP (NYH)- Despite the poor performance of the New York Highlanders in the World Series, the pitcher was one of the main reasons why the club was able to not only catch, but pass the Philadelphia Athletics and get the American League crown for the third year in a row. He finished the season with a 23-12 record in 311.1 innings, as well as an ERA of 2.72 and 103 strikeouts. He also had the first win in World Series history. National League MVP: Jesse Tannehill, SP (PIT)- While the Pirates finished just behind the Phillies for the third year in a row, Jesse was far and away the best pitcher in the National League. In 317.1 innings pitched, he compiled a 25-9 record with an ERA of 2.75 and 119 strikeouts. Most Valuable Batter American League MVB: Nap Lajoie, 2B (PHA)- What else can be said about this amazing player? This is his third straight Most Valuable Batter award, and although he did not hit .400 this season, he still led the American League in batting, and was a valuable part of the Athletics. Overall, he hit .363 with 4 homeruns and 93 RBI. If they could get him some help on the offensive side of the ball, Philadelphia could finally be the team to overthrow the Highlanders. National League MVB: Elmer Flick, RF (PHN)- The repeat winner of the National League's Most Valuable Batter award has something now that Nap Lajoie doesn't; a World Series title. This makes three straight years that a Phillie has won this award, and two in a row for Flick. This season, while helping lead the Phils to the World Series title, he hit .345 with 79 RBI and 58 stolen bases. Gold Glove Winners American League Gold Glove Award Winners: Pitcher: Ham Iburg (CHA) Catcher: Roger Bresnahan (NYH) First Base: John Anderson (SLA) Second Base: Jimmy Williams (NYH) Third Base: Pete O'brien (PHA) Shortstop: Freddy Parent (BOS) Leftfield: Billy Maloney (SLA) Centerfield: Jimmy Barrett (DET) Rightfield: Tommy Raub (CLE) National League Gold Glove Award Winners: Pitcher: Al Orth (PHI) Catcher: Jack O'connor (PIT) First Base: Frank Chance (CHN) Second Base: Bobby Lowe (BSN) Third Base: Ed Gremminger (BRO) Shortstop: Bill Dahlen (BRO) Leftfield: John Dobbs (CIN) Centerfield: Emil Frisk (CIN) Rightfield: Elmer Smith (PIT) Top 5 Leaderboard TOP 5 in BATTING AVG : .363 Nap Lajoie(PHA) .351 Honus Wagner(PIT) .348 Fred Clarke(PIT) .345 Elmer Flick(PHI) .343 Willie Keeler(BRO) TOP 5 in HOMERUNS : 6 Sam Crawford(CIN) 6 John Anderson(SLA) 4 Nap Lajoie(PHA) 4 John Dobbs(CIN) 4 Frank Chance(CHN) TOP 5 in RBI : 94 Danny Murphy(PHI) 93 Nap Lajoie(PHA) 91 Fred Clarke(PIT) 87 John Mcgraw(BLA) 86 Buck Freeman(BOS) TOP 5 in ERA : 2.60 Noodles Hahn(CIN) 2.61 Red Donahue(PHI) 2.61 Eddie Plank(PHA) 2.62 Ed Doheny(NYG) 2.62 Deacon Phillippe(PIT) TOP 5 in WINS : 25 Jesse Tannehill(PIT) 24 Harry Howell(NYH) 23 Joe Mcginnity(NYH) 22 Eddie Plank(PHA) 21 Rube Waddell(PIT) TOP 5 in SAVES : 12 Bill Carrick(WSH) 11 Bill Cristall(CLE) 10 Bob Blewett(BSN) 8 Joseph Yeager(DET) 8 Jesse Stovall( WSH) Other News For the first time since the two leagues have joined to become Major League Baseball, there is no threat of any team moving to a new city. With the Highlanders out of Baltimore, every other team reported positive numbers at the gate for the 1903 season. Team owners are hopeful that these increased rivalries will continue to boost revenue for quite some time. On the other side of the coin, the actual future of the World Series could be in doubt. With the Phillies taking the series in just six games, most National League owners are set on ending the season without the two leagues meeting, saying that they "don't want to embarass our friends over in the American League again." American League owners, while not happy with how the Highlanders performed against the Phillies, are attempting to keep the series going, citing increased gates for both teams involved. |

February 1, 1904
News While no teams did move this offseason, the biggest news, of course, is the decision by the National League owners to not continue the World Series for this season. "As far as we're concerned, the Phillies proved what we already knew; that the National League is far superior to any team that the American League could put out," said one unnamed owner. "I wouldn't have been surprised to see the Cardinals take that series, and they finished with the worst record in both leagues." The American League, and fans, remain hopeful that a settlement can be reached before the 1905 season to allow this excellent display of baseball between the two leagues to be continued. In other news, two baseball greats announced they were walking away in the offseason. 300 game winner Cy Young announced that he was through with the game, citing a finally tiring arm, as well as the influx of young players into the game. St. Louis Browns star Hugh Duffy also announced that he would not play another game, and said he wanted to get back into managing, as he was the manager for the Milwaukee Brewers before their move. Sure enough, the World Series champion Phillies were the first to get a hold of Duffy, replacing old manager Chief Zimmer, whose harsh attitude was said to irritate many of the players. Whether or not Duffy can have the same success is yet to be seen. Rookie Watch While last year's rookies weren't always on top of their abilities, Chief Bender was still able to take home the National League Rookie of the Year award, so here is a look at the top players that will enter the league in 1904. #1: Stuart "Scotty" Adamson, CF Young Adamson may soon become the fastest player in the big leagues. He is blessed with blazing speed and a soft glove to match. Also, he can hit on par with the likes of Nap Lajoie, Elmer Flick and Honus Wagner after he has some time to develop. Even though St. Louis has the first pick, and Clive Woodstock struggled there last year, expect big things out of this young man. Current Ratings (Contact/Gap/Power/Eye/Avoid K): 47/49/27/32/44 Total Talent Ratings: 102/45/40/70/40 #2: Ed Walsh, SP Walsh is cut in the mold of a Chief Bender from last year, although his age at 24 is a little older than most people in the draft. He is ready to start right away for whomever is lucky enough to select him, and he will dominate for years to come. Current Ratings (Stuff/Control/Movement): 43/77/99 Total Talent Ratings: 39/78/99 #3: Sherry Magee, LF While not on the same level as Stuart Adamson, Magee certainly has the ability to become a big player in the big leagues. He too has been known to be quite fast, and has an eye that most pitchers say could see a strike before it even leaves their hand. He might not become as big of a star as the other two players profiled, but he will contribute to the team that selects him. Current Ratings (Contact/Gap/Power/Eye/Avoid K): 61/83/22/50/85 Total Talent Ratings: 63/84/19/49/85 |

Draft Results
The draft again produced an obvious number one pick, and the St. Louis Cardinals made it their second in a row, selecting Stuart Adamson to become their new center fielder. While Adamson is on the big club, he is not going to be starting many games; rather team management believes that the young player can learn more from watching the players in St. Louis than going down to the minor leagues. We'll see how that turns out. Round 1 Results St. Louis (N) pick: CF Stuart Adamson Chicago (A) pick: P Ed Walsh Boston (A) pick: P Ralph Caldwell Cincinnati pick: LF Sherry Magee Washington pick: P Hooks Wiltse Boston (N) pick: P Red Ames New York (N) pick: P Frank Smith Cleveland pick: P Chick Robitaille Chicago (N) pick: P Fred Glade Detroit pick: P Andy Coakley Brooklyn pick: P Barney Pelty St. Louis (A) pick: P Beany Jacobson Philadelphia (A) pick: P Frank Corridon Pittsburgh pick: RF Harry Lumley New York (A) pick: 2B Miller Huggins Philadelphia (N) pick: P Nick Altrock Season Preview The story in both leagues is, once again, if anyone can knock off the Highlanders or Phillies and take the crowns away from the three time champions. Both leagues have contenders, so it should only be a matter of time until someone else is able to win. The American League seems to have a better chance of having someone knock off the Highlanders. Several teams, inlcuding the Pilgrims, Athletics and Bronchos could make some noise this season, and if one of them gets hot at the right time, they could find themselves on top of the American League. The National League is more about two teams; the Phillies and the Pirates. In all but one season so far, the Phillies and Pirates have finished one and two in the standings, and this year doesn't look to be any different. There should be some epic battles this season between the two clubs, with one of them coming out on top. Two teams that could have a chance to shock the world would be the Beaneaters, who have an excellent pitching staff, but minimal offense, and the Cubs, who are slowly becoming an all around good team. Prospect Watch After last season, let's take a look back at the last two number 1 overall draft picks. Dieter Kahle, CF-Chicago Cubs Code:

The American League looks much like it has over the past three years, with Philadelphia and New York battling for the top spot. This year, however, there is a newcomer to the scene, as the once lowly Chicago White Sox have risen into second place, taking over the Highlanders' position for the time being. Whether or not they can continue to hold on remains to be seen. Code:

October 12, 1904
Even without a World Series, the results from the 1904 season are the same as they have been for the past three years. The American League saw the Philadelphia Athletics collapse throughout the summer months, losing not only their spot at the top of the league, but also any dignity they may have had, falling all the way to 4th by October. The Highlanders had excellent seaons from Mike Donlin and Joe McGinnity, while two surprise teams, the Tigers and Senators will be looking to end the long reign of the Highlanders next season. Code:

The Pirates had several chances to score throughout the game, but could never get that run to cross the plate. The team went down silently in the 9th, leaving the Phils to celebrate their 4th straight league title and themselves to wonder what could have been. Code:

End of the Year Awards and Notes
Rookie of the Year American League ROY: Hooks Wiltse, SP (WAS)- Hooks was a main reason why the Senators should be one of the teams to watch in the 1905 season. In just his first year, he compiled a record of 17-11 in 268.1 innings, striking out 160 batters while walking only 59. National League ROY: Fred Glade, SP (CHN)- For a team that needed starting pitching, Glade came at just the right time. He led the Cubs last season with a 24-10 record, throwing the first no hitter in team history. He also had an ERA of 1.85 with 148 strikeouts. Most Valuable Pitcher American League MVP: Joe McGinnity, SP (NYH)- McGinnity was once again on the top of his game when the Highlanders needed him to be. Throughout the second half of the season, Joe was unhittable, leading the team from New York to their fourth consecutive American League pennant. He compiled a record of 28-9 with a 2.35 ERA, striking out 135 batters through the season. National League MVP: Noodles Hahn, SP (CIN)- In the 1904 season, Hahn became the first pitcher to amass 30 wins in a single season. Considering he only started 43 games the entire year, there was little room for mistakes, and Hahn made every start count in leading the Reds back towards the top of the National League. He finished with a record of 30-8, an ERA of 1.89 and 221 strikeouts. Most Valuable Batter American League MVB: Mike Donlin, CF (NYH)- Donlin had the season legends are made out of in 1904, leading the American League in batting average at .362, homeruns with 6 and RBI with 88. This accomplishment is being called the Triple Crown, and was more than enough to give Donlin his first Most Valuable Batter award. National League MVB: Sam Crawford, RF (CIN)- If the Reds want to overtake Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, it's going to take more than Noodles Hahn, and Sam Crawford is the one who can help. At just 24, Crawford had a magnificent season, batting .322 with 4 homeruns and 77 RBI to lead the Reds. Gold Glove Winners American League Gold Glove Award Winners: Pitcher: Tom Walker (NYH) Catcher: Mike Grady (WSH) First Base: Candy Lachance (CLE) Second Base: Jimmy Williams (NYH) Third Base: Pete O'brien (PHA) Shortstop: Lee Demontreville (PHA) Leftfield: Billy Maloney (SLA) Centerfield: Jimmy Barrett (DET) Rightfield: Fielder Jones (CHA) National League Gold Glove Award Winners: Pitcher: Frank Kitson (BRO) Catcher: Ossee Schreckengost (BRO) First Base: Germany Schaefer (BRO) Second Base: Terry Turner (SLN) Third Base: Ed Gremminger (BRO) Shortstop: Bill Dahlen (BRO) Leftfield: John Titus (NYG) Centerfield: Dieter Kahle (CHN) Rightfield: Sam Crawford (CIN) Top 5 Leaderboard TOP 5 in BATTING AVG : .362 Mike Donlin(NYH) .334 Ginger Beaumont(PIT) .330 Matty Mcintyre(PHA) .325 Emil Frisk(CIN) .322 Lefty Davis(BOS) TOP 5 in HOMERUNS : 6 Mike Donlin(NYH) 6 John Farrell(WSH) 5 Mike Grady(WSH) 5 Jim Jones(NYG) 4 Sport Mcallister(DET) TOP 5 in RBI : 90 Charlie Hickman(NYG) 88 Mike Donlin(NYH) 88 Jimmy Williams(NYH) 87 Danny Murphy(PHI) 83 John Anderson(SLA) TOP 5 in ERA : 1.48 Jim St. Vrain(WSH) 1.85 Fred Glade( CHN) 1.89 Win Kellum(BOS) 1.89 Noodles Hahn(CIN) 1.89 Rube Waddell(PIT) TOP 5 in WINS : 30 Noodles Hahn(CIN) 28 Joe Mcginnity(NYH) 24 Fred Glade( CHN) 24 Jack Chesbro(PIT) 24 Doc White(PHI) TOP 5 in SAVES : 19 Cy Morgan( WSH) 14 Bill Phyle(NYG) 11 Bob Blewett(BSN SLA) 10 Norwood Gibson(CIN) 10 Jesse Stovall(WSH) Other News It appears that the World Series, which was called off this past season, will be back on again in 1905. Owners from all 16 major league teams have been meeting, and have decided that the best of 9 series is for the best. "It's the only way to help stop all this childish bickering over who is the best," one owner said. "Besides, it seems like the public is willing to pay a little more for the gate for those games, so how can we go wrong?" It also appears that one of the great players in the game will be retiring at the start of next year. Ed Delahanty, one of the best players on the past 4 Phillies teams has been telling people that this past season will be his last. "It was a great run, I mean I got to be part of history here in Philadelphia," Delahanty said. "I had thought about jumping leagues for a little while, but the chance to play for such a great team here was enough to convince me to stay. I got to be a part of the first ever World Series, and that's enough for me. It's been fun, but I think it's time for the young men to take my spot." |

February 1, 1905
News The big story of the offseason from 1904 intol 1905 was the agreement of all major league owners to once again start play of the World Series after the regular season. Both the American and National League owners believe that this championship series between the two leagues will help settle who has the best team for that season. "It was a better idea than we originally thought," said one National League owner. "What better way to show those ungrateful upstarts in the American League that they don't belong then by knocking the stuffing out of them every October? Besides, it seems that attendance goes up for important games, and that means the gates will be tremendous!" Who will be representing the National League in this year's World Series may finally change, as the Philadelphia Phillies lost two key players due to age. Both Ed Delahantly and Hughie Jennings decided to walk away from the game before the 1905 season. Delahanty leaves as the 4th leading player in hits in baseball history, and was a key leader for the four straight league titles the Phillies won. Jennings was always solid, but many around the club believe that he never fully recovered from that injury that cost him all of the 1902 season. Rookie Watch It's that time of the year again, and with a very limited draft class this season, let's look at who the worst teams from 1904 will be selecting at the top. #1: Don "Red" Ayers, 2B Don is another excellent player that is sure to be taken first overall by the Cleveland Bronchos in this draft. He has good speed and is a rare strikeout victim, all while being able to smack the ball to all corners of the field. He certainly must be happy that he is going to a city other than St. Louis, as he will have a chance to shine on his own and mold the soon to be improving Bronchos in his image. Current Ratings (Contact/Gap/Power/Eye/Avoid K): 43/49/31/37/22 Total Talent Ratings: 80/65/40/75/70 #2: Orval Overall, SP Overall would not normally be thought about being drafted so high, but with a very thin pool this year, he is probably the best starting pitcher available. He does have four solid pitches, and is able to make the ball dance around the plate with great ease, but seems to have problems controlling where his pitches will end up. In an amateur game last year, he threw four pitches behind a batter in the same at bat, leaving many to question his ability to throw for accuracy. Current Ratings (Stuff/Control/Movement): 45/52/102 Total Talent Ratings: 41/54/99 |

Draft Results
With such a thin looking draft class this season, there was honestly no question about who would be selected first this year. Don Ayers was the obvious number one choice going to Cleveland, and Orval Overall was selected next by St. Louis. Despite the fact that the Bronchos have Erve Beck at second base, Ayers has already been promoted to the big club. He will be looked at to provide a spark off the bench, as well as learn first hand from the established players. Much like Stuart Adamson in St. Louis, we'll have to wait and see how this works out. Round 1 Results Cleveland pick: 2B Don Ayers St. Louis (N) pick: P Orval Overall New York (N) pick: P Joe Harris Boston (A) pick: P Irv Young Chicago (A) pick: P Ed Reulbach St. Louis (A) pick: P Jim Buchanan Boston (N) pick: P Jake Thielman Chicago (N) pick: P Charlie Chech Brooklyn pick: P Hi West Philadelphia (A) pick: P Big Jeff Pfeffer Washington pick: P Harry Mcintire Detroit pick: P Bill Hogg Cincinnati pick: CF Solly Hofman Pittsburgh pick: SS Al Bridwell Philadelphia (N) pick: P Elmer Stricklett New York (A) pick: LF George Stone Season Preview Of course with the World Series once again becoming a part of Major League Baseball this season, they will be several teams looking to still unseat the Highlanders and the Phillies from their respective perches in the American and National League. Let's look at some of the best teams not from Philadelphia or New York. American League The Washington Senators look to be the best chance for another team to win the American League this season. Led by excellent pitching from Jim St. Vrain and Hooks Wiltse, the Senators can match the Highlanders pitcher for pitcher. When it comes to offense, the Senators are weaker, with only John Farrell and Watty Lee providing any sort of offensive clout. This team will have to win using their men on the mound. Other teams that seem to have less of a chance would first be the Detroit Tigers, who surprised most people by finishing second the the American League last year. Much like Washington, the Tigers' strength is in their pitching staff, where four players finished with double digit wins last season. If their offense can improve, they may find themselves playing in the middle of October. Also, the Philadelphia Athletics should be considered a force to be reckoned with, despite their fourth place showing in 1904. If Nap Lajoie can return to his previous form, and the pitching remains solid, the Athletics have a decent chance of returning to the top of the League, and possibly putting quite a scare into the Highlanders. National League The Phillies are, much like the Highlanders in the American League, still the team to beat in the National League. Despite the retirements of Ed Delahanty and Hughie Jennings, the Phillies remain an excellent club. Al Orth will not be playing for a month, however, as he is still recovering from a severe injury suffered last season. This team is seen as more vulnerable than the Highlanders, due to the close finishes they have been involved in the past few years. Of course, the team everyone is looking towards to overthrow them would be the Pittsburgh Pirates, who lost a one game playoff to the Phillies last season for the National League crown. The Pirates will be returning with many of their players from last year, including Honus Wagner on offense and a plethora of pitchers, four of whom won 15 or more games last season. If any team has an excellent shot to beat the Phillies, it's this team. Don't count out the Cincinnati Reds, however. Noodles Hahn is coming off of arguably the best pitching season ever, winning 30 games and they also have Most Valuable Batter winner Sam Crawford still patrolling the outfield and scaring opposing pitchers at the plate. If the rest of the pitching staff can ever summon up a small piece of what Hahn was able to do last year, the Reds could surprise a lot of people. Prospect Watch Let's take a look at what is expected from the last three number one overall picks in 1905. Dieter Kahle, CF-Chicago Cubs Code:

Well, New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Detroit are battling all right. Battling to stay out of last place, that is. All four teams got off to very slow starts the season, allowing last year's surprise team, the Chicago White Sox, to sneak into first place in the American League. While both New York and Philadelphia have made strides in the past weeks, the Athletics' chances may have been dashed when star Nap Lajoie was felled by an injury that will cost him the rest of the season. What a difference a year makes in both leagues. For the first time in league history, neither the Highlanders nor the Phillies won their respective championships. Rather, in the American League, it was the surprise St. Louis Browns who took the crown, outlasting several challengers including the resurgant Philadelphia Athletics, Boston Pilgrims and Chicago White Sox. The Browns were dealt a huge blow, however, when ace George Mullin went down with an injury that will likely end his playing days. For now, however, they are focused on winning the first World Series for the American League. Code:

While the Browns were able as a team to generate more offense, the Pirates have by far the better pitching staff, especially with George Mullin missing the World Series and losing the rest of his career. The one question mark for the Pirates is whether or not they can overcome Honus Wagner's injury. If they can, it should be smooth sailing for the other team from the Keystone State. Prediction: Pirates in 6 |

Well, I wanted to get this done tonight, but I wasn't able to. I'm going to be away from my computer until Saturday night, so you'll have to wait until the weekend to see who won the World Series.

1905 World Series
Game 1-10/11/05: Pirates-9 Browns-10 (10 innings) When the Pirates took an almost unbeatable 7-1 lead going into the sixth inning, it seemed as if the Browns were finished in Game 1. However, a four run bottom of the sixth gave the team from the American League new life. Another run for the Browns in the bottom of the 8th made it 7-6, and it seemed the life had been taken out of the Pirates. That is until they came back and scored two more runs of their own in the top of the 9th to make it a three run game once again. The Browns would not go away though, scoring 3 to tie the game and send the World Series to extra innings for the first time ever. After setting the Pirates down in the top of the 10th, the Browns put runners on the corners with one out, and Bill Friel drove in pinch runner Wilbur Good to take Game 1 away from Pittsburgh. W: Jim Buchanan L: Sam Leever Game 2-10/12/05: Pirates-15 Browns-4 Pittsburgh was not about to let another lead slip away from their grasp this time, scoring two in the 1st, one in the 2nd, six from the 5th to the 7th and six more in the 9th to easy put away the Browns in Game 2. Kitty Bransfield led the way for the Pirates, driving in 4 on 2 hits, and pitcher Jesse Tannehill easily outlasted Ned Garvin to tie the series up at one game each. W: Jesse Tannehill L: Ned Garvin Game 3-10/14/05: Browns-9 Pirates-10 (10 innings) This time, it was the Pirates' turn to make a late game surge and win an extra inning game. Down by five going into the bottom of the 7th and facing pitcher Bert Husting, who had thrown an excellent game, it looked like things were almost over for the team from Pittsburgh. That is until they scored three times in the 7th, followed up by twice more in the 8th. In the bottom of the 9th, the Pirates quickly got two men on, only to have Kitty Bransfield thrown out at home and Tommy Leach go down on strikes. With the game on the line, catcher Art Hoelskoetter came up huge, driving in both men and tying the game at 9-9. In the 10th, the Pirates wasted one chance when Al Bridwell was thrown out at the plate, only to have Ginger Beaumont deliver a basehit that drove in the winning run just three batters later. W: Sam Leever L: Bob Blewett Game 4-10/15/05: Browns-3 Pirates-1 In the first pitcher's duel of the series, it was Jim Buchanan once again outpitching Rube Waddell and picking up the win for the squad out of St. Louis. Buchanan was lights out, pitching 8 innings of five hit, one run ball, while Bob Blewett made up for the night before, picking up the save. First baseman John Anderson provided all the offense the Browns needed, driving in two on two hits. W: Jim Buchanan L: Rube Waddell S: Bob Blewett Game 5-10/16/05: Browns-1 Pirates-3 It was again a pitcher's duel, but this time, it was Jesse Tannehill shutting down Ned Garvin and the Browns to take a three games to two lead in the World Series. Tannehill was superb, pitching a complete game 8 hitter, striking out five. He also went three for three and drove in his third run of the series at the plate. Catcher Art Hoelskoetter drove in another run, while Fred Clarke finished off the scoring for the Pirates. W: Jesse Tannehill L: Ned Garvin Game 6-10/18/05: Pirates-2 Browns-3 With their backs against the wall, the Browns came through on their home field late in Game 6. With the score at 2-1 going into the bottom of the 8th, it seemed almost over for St. Louis, especially with Jack Chesbro pitching a gem for Pittsburgh. However, the Browns managed to load the bases with two outs, and then Chesbro uncorked a wild pitch, allowing opposing pitcher Bert Husting to score and tie the game. It remained tied until the next inning, when the Browns again loaded the bases, this time with no outs when Irv Waldron stepped to the plate. He worked a 3-2 count from Chesbro and then saw the next pitch go wide of the plate, walking in the winning run and sending the World Series to its first ever seventh and deciding game. W: Bert Husting L: Jack Chesbro Game 7-10/19/05: Pirates-4 Browns-1 The air was filled with tension before the first pitch of Game 7, as Jim Buchanan was set to face Rube Waddell, a pitcher the Browns had already bested twice in this series. Today was not the day for St. Louis, however, as the Pirates jumped on Buchanan early, scoring a run in the first inning on the first World Series homerun by Kitty Bransfield. They scored again in the second on a Claude Richfield single that scored Ginger Beaumont, and that was enough today for Waddell. He allowed just five hits and one run, striking out nine and pitching a complete game. Waddell also recorded the last out of the series on a ground out back to the mound by Billy Gilbert. The long suffering Pirates were now the champions of baseball. W: Rube Waddell L: Jim Buchanan Series Co-MVPs: Jesse Tannehill, SP- 2-0, 19IP, 2.00 ERA & Ginger Beaumont, CF- .360, 4 2B, 6 RBI 1905 World Series Champions: Pittsburgh Pirates First Championship |

End of the Year Awards and Notes
Rookie of the Year American League ROY: Jim Buchanan, SP (SLA)- Without Jim, where would the Browns have finished this season? It was his stellar showing in his first season that propelled the Browns to the World Series and garnered him the Rookie of the Year award. Buchanan finished the season with a record of 20-18, including a 2.53 ERA and 155 strikeouts. He also won two of the three games the Browns won in the World Series. National League ROY: Orval Overall, SP (SLN)- Look no further than one of the main reasons why the Cardinals improved their record substancially this season. As a rookie, he had doubters, but he silenced them all very quickly, going 21-13 with a 2.45 ERA and 184 strikeouts in 326 innings. If he can keep this up, the Cards may have finally found their ace. Most Valuable Pitcher American League MVP: Eddie Plank, SP (PHA)- Despite the Athletics' third place finish, Eddie once again had a solid season. He led the Philadelphia club with 24 wins compared to 13 losses and an incredible 2.24 ERA. This is the second time Plank has won the MVP, and should be able to compile even more with his astounding pitching. National League MVP: Christy Mathewson, SP (NYG)- It took some time, but Mathewson finally emerged from his shell of average play to capture his first Most Valuable Pitcher trophy. In his fifth season with the Giants, Mathewson was amazing, gathering a solid record of 23-17 with an excellent 1.85 ERA and a mind boggling 232 strikeouts. Young Christy should be looking foward to many solid years ahead. Most Valuable Batter American League MVB: Matty McIntyre, LF (PHA)- Once again, despite the third place finish from Philadelphia, Matty was able to put up the best statistics in the American League to win the MVB. In the 1905 season, McIntyre batted .325 with 3 home runs and 65 RBI in leading the Athletics to a solid second half of the season without Nap Lajoie. National League MVB: Ginger Beaumont, CF (PIT)- Not only did Pittsburgh win the World Series in 1905, but Ginger Beaumont was spectacular in leading his team to their first title. Beaumont was solid throughout the entire season, hitting at a .320 clip with 3 home runs and 59 RBI. Gold Glove Winners American League Gold Glove Award Winners: Pitcher: Chick Robitaille (CLE) Catcher: Billy Sullivan (CHA) First Base: Burt Hart (NYH) Second Base: Jimmy Williams (NYH) Third Base: Pete O'brien (PHA) Shortstop: Ed Abbaticchio (DET) Leftfield: Billy Maloney (SLA) Centerfield: Dave Fultz (PHA) Rightfield: Moose Mccormick (PHA) National League Gold Glove Award Winners: Pitcher: Nick Altrock (PHI) Catcher: Pat Moran (BSN) First Base: Dan Mcgann (SLN) Second Base: Terry Turner (SLN) Third Base: Ed Gremminger (BRO) Shortstop: Rudy Hulswitt (BRO) Leftfield: Sherry Magee (CIN) Centerfield: Stuart Adamson (SLN) Rightfield: Harry Lumley (PIT) Top 5 Leaderboard TOP 5 in BATTING AVG : .328 Jimmy Barrett(DET) .326 Pop Foster(WSH) .325 Matty Mcintyre(PHA) .320 Ginger Beaumont(PIT) .313 Jimmy Williams(NYH) TOP 5 in HOMERUNS : 6 Clive Woodstock(SLN) 5 Wid Conroy(SLA) 5 Joe Tinker(CHN) 5 Dieter Kahle(CHN) 4 Harry Davis(PHA) TOP 5 in RBI : 86 Chick Stahl(BOS) 84 Harry Davis(PHA) 84 Emmet Heidrick(CHA) 81 Charlie Hickman(NYG) 78 Dieter Kahle(CHN) TOP 5 in ERA : 1.85 Christy Mathewson(NYG) 1.86 Deacon Phillippe(PIT) 1.93 Addie Joss(BSN) 1.96 Hooks Wiltse(WSH) 2.00 Win Kellum(BOS) TOP 5 in WINS : 24 Hooks Wiltse(WSH) 24 Eddie Plank(PHA) 23 Christy Mathewson(NYG) 23 Mordecai Brown(CHA) 23 Red Donahue(PHI) TOP 5 in SAVES : 13 Bob Blewett(SLA) 11 Joseph Yeager(DET) 11 George Winter(BOS) 9 Jerry Nops(NYH) 7 Doc Newton(NYG) Other News With the tremendous physical and finanical success of the 1905 World Series, it appears that the matchup will be here to stay, at least as long as Major League Baseball continues to play. The Browns put up a better fight than most National League players and owners believed they could, leading to a possible greater feeling of respect from the Senior Circut. According to some other players, it seems that two of the all time hit leaders may be walking away from the game before the 1906 season. Both Jake Beckley and Jesse Burkett, both of whom are within the top three all time in hits, are looking to put up their gloves. "It's been such a good time playing this game," Burkett said. "I have nothing but fond memories of my team and what they helped me do. I may be walking away from playing, but I would love to manage one day." Burkett will leave the game as the all time hit leader with 2,647 hits, and Beckley will walk away in third with 2,574 base hits. |

February 1, 1906
News There has been very little in the world of baseball during the winter months between 1905 and 1906. As reported at the end of last year, the World Series will continue to be played out at the end of each season, based on the success of the Pirates/Browns matchup. However, as was also reported, the game lost three excellent ballplayers in between 1905 and 1906. Both Jesse Burkett and Jake Beckley retired in the offseason, leaving the game both in the top three in base hits in baseball history. Joining them was superb pitcher Amos Rusie of Cincinnati. Rusie had seen limited play in the last few seasons, but believed he still had the ability. However, when this past season came to a close, Rusie believed it was time for him to walk away. All three of these fine players will go down in the books as some of the best ever. Rookie Watch With the Washington Senators having the first selection in the amateur draft, let's look at who the top players are that have a chance of joining them. #1: Ty Cobb, CF There are good young players, and then there's Ty Cobb. This amazing young man has already established himself as a bona fide superstar before even entering the league, as he is known throughout the country already. He has the amazing ability to knock the ball to any corner of the park, and has an excellent chance to be one of the best players ever. Washington would be crazy to not select him with the first pick. Current Ratings (Contact/Gap/Power/Eye/Avoid K): 101/94/18/57/91 Total Talent Ratings: 105/95/19/56/91 #2: Sandford "Saltpeter" Freshlam, SP Freshlam will become a good pitcher in time, but he is more of a developmental prospect right now. He has worlds of raw ability, but if he doesn't find the right team, he may never develop. With the Cubs having the second pick, look for them to take him, but he will need to spend some time in the minors before heading to the big club to join Dieter Kahle. Current Ratings (Stuff/Control/Movement): 13/5/22 Total Talent Ratings: 103/110/46 The rest of the draft has some average, but no spectacular players. While Cobb will obviously be the first player chosen, Freshlam should become quite the fine pitcher if he is able to develop correctly. Only time will tell if any of these players can lead their new teams to the top. |
