TRADE between Tampa Bay and Milwaukee :
Milwaukee gets :
RF Matt Diaz
We get :
P Calvin Schwing

This opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for us so that we can put Catalanotto there. Schwing was Milwaukee's first round draft pick last year and could be our closer in a few years. The biggest reason for this deal was to clear a spot on the 40.

I doubt this team does anything in the AL East. In fact, I know that they won't do anything. This is a transition year for us meaning that we are waiting for our young players to come up. I do plan on acquiring more prospects somehow, whether it be the draft or even if I trade some of our guys. Anyone on the team could be traded especially the outfielders.

I'm not too disappointed with these lineups and this rotation considering what they had last year. It still won't get us to the playoffs though and so that means we'll probably have to hope for a 70-75 win team although that would probably even be more than I'd expect at this point. I guess a lot of questions will be answered by this season and what kind of team we are.

We seem to be giving up quite a few HR and too many in my opinion, but I then remember the box that we play in, which is the reason for that stat. We lost our last two games that resulted in a losing record for this month, but all in all I am pleased with the way we played this month. It's a good start.

Hitting wise we are doing OK. I am hoping Newhan can rebound for a good May. Phelps is diong well as is Huff, both have carried the offense. I'm thinking their power numbers will pick up as the season goes along. Guiel has taken Cruz jr.'s spot at DH and had a really good month offensively for us. Baldelli was injured a few weeks into the season and will probably return to action in another week or so.

On the pitching side of things we are pretty inconsistent. Lilly is getting till about midway through May and if he doesn't shape up I may think of bringing up Maroth or Switzer or someone like that from AAA to replace him. The bullpen is in SHAMBLES and they are the reason for a third of our losses which is pathetic. I am hoping that Darensburg, Mizuo, and Carter can come back down to earth and we could probably win a few more games.

Our pitching continues to impress. We hit a skid where we lost six straight and then ended the month pretty well. I'm happy that we can continue to win at home as that is the first important step to creating a good team. Always important to win at your stadium. The walks allowed stat impresses me the most as I usually like my pitchers on my teams to have really good control, and that's what I looked for when I first started with these guys.

Newhan continues to struggle. I think that I may look to the minor leagues or the free agency to help that problem out. Cruz jr. isn't starting anymore and Guiel has taken over full time at DH. Catalanotto went on a drought to end the month as he was hitting really well going into the last week. I'm liking Baldelli and Hamilton at the top of the lineup because they are getting us runs and stealing bases to get into scoring position. Phelps hit for more power this month, but his average went down. Huff continues to hit really well.

Well to say the least the bullpen improved a little. I guess. I'm going to continue with the same guys, and I will decided what to do in another month if they continue to struggle. I moved Carter from a setup role to a middle relief role to see if he'd do better. I am really impressed with Jeremy Affeldt so far. He could be a major part of our team for the next five to ten years at the age of 25. Reyes continues to do well surprisingly, and I am hoping he doesn't fall of the face of the earth later in the season, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. Backe needs to begin to improve, as he is a big part of our bullpen.

Switzer is looking like he may get called up very soon to replace Lilly if Lilly can't pick it up. The hits he has give up kind of scare me but the earned run average and his age are making me wonder if it's time for him to become a Devil Ray. Anderson could find himself in AAA within the next few weeks, as he was in AA last year also. Probably next week I will promote him. Johnny Gomes' power is really making me wish I could call him up, but I don't know who he would replace. Part of me wants to just DFA Cruz jr. and have Gomes take his place as top pinch hitter, but I want to allow Gomes to develop still and I want him to play. Hamilton, Gomes, and Young are looking to be a very dominating outfield trio with Aaron Guiel at DH. Bartolome Fortunato needs to improve more if he wants to be at the majors soon as a 4.54 ERA at AAA isn't good enough for me. He will most likley remain in AAA until the end of the year. I am hoping that Upton can develop some power, but right now with talent ratings only at 4 I doubt that happens. He'll be a good leadoff hitter though.

June First Year Player Draft

Alright its probably one of the biggest days of the year for the Devil Rays as they of course have the first pick of the draft, and

they could get another franchise cornerstone to go along with B.J. Upton and Delmon Young. Right now I am thinking about either 3B

Milford Morin, SP Juan Grialva, or SP Logan Dalrymple. Morin has the best potential and had a very good career at Villanova and is a

HUGE power hitter. I ended up taking him.

Code:
3B Milford "Cats" Morin (CON: 7, GAP: 7, POW: 9, E/D: 8, AV. K: 7)
Age: 21
Bat/Throw: R/R
Overall: CON: 4, GAP: 5, POW: 5, E/D: 5, AV. K: 4
Signing Bonus: $1,920,000
Comments:
Definintely the best player available in this years draft. My plan would be to have him or Huff move to DH (whichever one isn't a very
good fielder) and I could boast a pretty good lineup. Potential DOA: April 06

Code:
SP Robert Blass (STU: 7, CON: 5, MOVE: 7, VEL: 88-91)
Age: 20
B/T: R/R
Overall: STU: 5, CON: 5, MOVE: 7
GB %: 53
END: 8/10
Comments:
He is more ready for the major leagues than some of the other guys that were available but he doesn't have the amazing potential that
they had. I could see him being our fourth or fifth starter on a really good staff. Potential DOA: September 06/April 07

Code:
1B Darwin Hunter (CON: 4, GAP: 7, POW: 5, E/D: 6, AV. K: 5)
Age: 18
B/T: R/R
Overall: CON: 2, GAP: 4, POW: 2, E/D: 3, AV. K: 1
Comments:
We have ourselves a pretty big project here. I will be really happy if this guys turns out O.K. but I'm not holding my breath. The only
real category he has a lot of potential in is the "gap" category, and he also looks like he may be able to get on base O.K. Potential DOA: April 08/09

Code:
SP David Acuna (STU: 4, CON: 6, MOVE: 7, VEL: 86-89)
Age: 24
B/T: R/R
Overall: STU: 4, CON: 5, MOVE: 7
GB %: 46
END: 9/10
Comments:
I fully expect that he'll be able to make it to the big show, although I am not sure if it will be as a SP. He could possibly be a number five type of guy but more realistic expectations for him would be a spot starter/mopup type of guy. That's what he'll be to begin with anyway. Potential DOA: September 05/April 06

Code:
CL Mark Danis (STU: 8, CON: 6, MOVE: 7, VEL: 88-91)
Age: 24
B/T: R/R
Overall: STU: 5, CON: 5, MOVE: 6
GB %: 35
Comments:
Mark could turn out being the best pitcher we got in this draft if he lives up to his potential. We are expecting him to be our closer late next season or the beginning of 2007. Definitely a 40-50 saves type of guy. Potential DOA: September 06/April 07

LF Arthur Mund (CON: 4, GAP: 8, POW: 1, E/D: 6, AV. K: 5)
SS Dion Pantoja (CON: 4, GAP: 6, POW: 2, E/D: 6, AV. K: 6)
RP John Adams (STU: 5, CON: 7, MOVE: 6, VEL: 86-89)
RF Brian Matthias (CON: 4, GAP: 6, POW: 3, E/D: 6, AV. K: 5)
SP David Bean (STU: 4, CON: 5, MOVE: 5, VEL: 89-92)

I have decided to just simulate to the all star break and then give an update since I will be doing something similar to this at that time anyway. I will just give you the midseason stats after this post and then we can be on with life. :-)

Both areas of the team have performed about league average halfway through the season. I think that is a plus considering that we pay our players the lowest in the league. We have gotten hot as of late after we appeared to be out of it when we were 32-38 with a week to
go in June. I am very happy with our control on the pitching side of things as we have the third fewest walks in the league. That and HRs allowed are the two essential stats on a pitching staff, which I have always said. We do need to start allowing fewer HRs and we could be one of the elite staffs in the league. It doesn't help that we play in a box to begin with. That may be one of the reasons we have given up that many homers to begin the season.

Team Transactions
Code:
7/7/2005
Trade with Toronto :
Toronto gets :
P Ted Lilly
We get :
P David Bush
I have had Lilly on the trading block all season long and finally Toronto gave me this offer. Bush's ratings tell me that he has the potential to be a very good number three type guy for us in the future, although his 2005 stats are hideous with an 0-7 record and a 7.92 earned run average. I am going to just option him to AAA and keep him there until about September or so and then we'll see how he does then. Replacing Lilly in the rotation will be John Switzer, who is 8-4 with a 3.91 ERA at AAA.
Code:
7/10/2005
Trade with San Diego :
San Diego gets :
2B David Newhan
We get :
P Gabe Ribas
Newhan has hit below .200 for the whole season and is currently at .186. We decided that instead of keeping him on our team and allowing him to struggle that badly, we would try and trade him for a middle relief prospect or something, but we surprisingly were able to pry Gabe Ribas away from San Diego, a pitching prospect that is almost identical to Bush. Bobby Hill will be called up to replace Newhan because he has hit .310 with 17 homeruns and 56 runs batted in at AAA. Ribas will go down to AAA Durham and could be called up very soon if Switzer struggles.

Now that we have traded away David Newhan, it looks as though Julio Lugo is set to take his place. Lugo cannot hit worth a lick and has struck out 71 times in 316 at bats. Our outfielders are continue to be the best on our team, and it is going to be tough to trade some of these guys away in the offseason. Norton filled in for Huff real well at the end of June when Huff was injured. Him and Phelps continue to provide the power for our team, along with Guiel. Josh Hamilton had a reall good month and hit .326 and stole eight bases. He has also surprisingly drove in more
guys than I would expect. Cruz's days are numbered as a Devil Ray or so I hope. If I am not able to trade him I will most likely DFA him at the beginning of August.

Backe continues to be a disappointment for us as his ERA actually got worse over the last month and a half. Reyes is surprising me and Affeldt has also been an excellent suprise along with Standrige, who continues to pitch well. Mizuo doubled his save total since the end of May and did really well in the last month. Darensburg also improved although it was a small improvement, I still feel these guys can improve to the level where they help us win.

Just wanted to make sure that people knew that because this is moving slowly doesn't mean it will die. I have been more busy then usual lately and haven't found time to just spend a few hours just playing and writing up reports.

We really struggled the second half of July and came back down to earth. We went on an eight game losing streak after being 45-45 and haven't really recovered. All of a sudden our team stats are becoming a part of the lower part of the league. I suppose that this was expected sooner or later.

OF Aaron Guiel
We get :
P Andy Pettitte
CF James Albarran
Guiel really surprised this season creating us some more trade bait to get the pieces for the puzzle that we are trying to solve here. Pettitte is 33 and is making $5,000,000, but we felt that within the next few years he can be the stable leader on our staff, if he is able to stay injury free. We sent down Jon Switzer back to AAA and we brought up OF Eric Valent to take Guiel's place in the outfield.

Well all I can say is that at least Bobby Hill is hitting better than Newhan was. If Baldelli could develop some power, I'd consider keeping him this offseason, but since that isn't likely I am strongly considering trading him away this offseason. Hamilton continues to develop more and more and looks to be manning CF for quite a few years to come. I'm expecting that Valent will be able to produce in the way that Guiel produced for us and I hope that Restovich can up his power a little. Lugo's days are numbered, but since we don't have a replacement for him, he will likely be on the team until the end of the season. Cruz jr. has been DFA'd and I have called up OF Johnny Gomes to replace him.

Affeldt has really come on, and has really been the only consistent guy on our staff. I am hoping that Pettitte can man this staff for years to come as it is going to get very young next season with guys like Bush and Ribas coming up along with possibly Switzer. Our relievers are doing better, but it may be too late as now our starters are starting to struggle.

Wow Sean Casey was traded for who LOL, the Royals always make the worst trades it seems.

Like the Pettite trade, good to deal a guy like Guiel when he is peaking because he will always regress to his normal stats.

We have definitely fallen off the face of the earth in the last month and a half. Its kind of depressing really. Pretty much our whole team has fallen apart on both sides of the field. Pitching has just given up way too many homeruns, something you can't have to be a successful staff. The walks allowed continue to impress, but it doesn't help unless you give up less homeruns. And we haven't. On the offensive side of the ball, we have no power whatsoever. That is defninitely an area that I will look into this offseason when getting new players for our team. We are doin O.K. in the stolen base category, but I'm not the type of guy that prefers to have a basestealer on my team. All I want out of the guys I have is fo them to be able to get on base.

It was a very tough month for our team health wise also. Our outfield really took some hits. Cruz Jr.'s buyout was not bad as he only cost us approximately $900K to release him. Hamilton was having a very successful first year as he was the really only "consistent
