George Plimpton

Sorry to hear Plimpton(post #726) never made an impact. What are you gonna do about your avatar. Sidd Finch nevermore? Different name? who the heck will the Detroit Lions knock the crap out of.

Anyway I started reading this dynasty a few weeks ago, stalled on page 27 then spent the last hour or so catching up to real time, mostly because of the PBRL server problems.
I haven't followed the baseball near as much as the alternate history. If it wasn't for the PBRL commitment you would probably be well into the late 50's early 60's.
Good to see Alf Landon (I guess) as prez. He's a Kansas like me. Hopefully he'll do the state some good!

Curious what Ruth's career line is, and since I am named after Lou Gehrig I demand to know what the heck happened to his developement.
What's Gehrigs's career stat line too!

Keep up the good work Pete, here and over at the PBRL!!

Ask and ye shall receive....
Code:
          G AB H 2B 3B HR RBI R BB AVG/OBP/SLG

RUTH - 2021 6658 2360 509 77 588 1890 2004 2166 .354/.510/.719
He had a bit more competition than in our reality....
Code:
            G AB H 2B 3B HR RBI R BB AVG/OBP/SLG

GEHRIG - 1083 3947 1107 163 33 29 474 467 207 .280/.314/.361
Gehrig on the other hand developed very slowly, then his career was cut short when he broke his wrist in spring training in 1936, causing him to miss the entire season. He never made it back, retiring in the offseason at the tender age of 33.

NOTEWORTHY EVENTS - 1937

* Italicized events actually happened. If the event is partially italicized, the parts in normal type have been changed for this reality. The changes could be extremely minor or quite significant.

  • January 20 - In the last official act of his tenure, 95 year-old Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. swears in US. President Alf Landon for a second term. This is the first time Inauguration Day in the United States has occurred on this date.
January 22 - Chief Justice Holmes tenders his resignation from the Supreme Court, citing failing health. He has been ill a number of times over the past few years, including a bout with pneumonia in 1935.
  • January 29 - President Landon nominates James Clark McReynolds to replace Holmes as Chief Justice.
  • February 5 - President Alf Landon proposes a plan to enlarge the Supreme Court of the United States to 11 members. It is met with outcries from the minority Democratic Party as an attempt to "stuff the Court" with fellow conservatives.
  • February 11 - A sit-down strike ends when General Motors recognizes the United Automobile Workers Union
  • February 16 - Wallace H. Carothers receives a patent for nylon.
  • February 18 - James Clark McReynolds is easily confirmed as Chief Justice by a vote of 83-17

Chief Justice McReynolds in his official Court portrait
  • February 19 - Addis Ababa Massacre: During a state ceremony at the Viceregal Palace in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, two Eritrean nationalists attempt to kill Viceroy Corneliu Zelea Codreanu and the visiting Ferenc Szalasi with a number of grenades. Codreanu is seriously injured, but Szalasi escapes unscathed. On Szalasi's order the Magyar Dominion troops fire into the crowd of Ethiopian onlookers. Over the passing weeks tens of thousands of native Ethiopians are indiscriminately slaughtered in reprisal.
  • February 20 - Despite a complete lack of evidence, Szalasi accuses the United States, Canada and the C.C.P. of attempting to assassinate him. He promises swift reprisal.
  • February 24 - In Japan, General Kazushige Ugaki leads a bloody coup over Sadao Araki's government. Unsubstantiated reports have Ugaki decapitating his rival with an ancestral katana and tossing his head into the throng outside the Imperial Palace.
  • March - The first issue of the comic book Detective Comics is published in the United States.
  • March 18 - New London School Disaster: In the worst school disaster in American history in terms of lives lost, the New London School in New London, Texas suffers a catastrophic natural gas explosion, killing in excess of three hundred students and teachers. Early in 1937, the school board, in order to save money, canceled their natural gas contract, and had plumbers install a tap into Parade Gasoline Company's residue gas line. This practice, while not explicitly authorized by local oil companies, was widespread in the area. Friday's classes had been cancelled to allow for students to participate in Henderson's Interscholastic Meet, a scholastic and athletic competition. As per the school's normal schedule, first through fourth grade students had been let out early. Unknown to anyone, natural gas had been leaking from the tap on the residue line, and had built up inside an enclosed crawlspace that ran the entire 253-foot length of the building's facade. Students had been complaining of headaches for some time, but little attention had been paid to it. At 3:05 pm, "instructor of manual training" Lemmie R. Butler turned on an electric sander. The sanding machine's switch is believed to have caused a spark that ignited the gas-air mixture. Reports from witnesses state that the walls of the school bulged, and then the roof briefly lifted off the building. The roof then crashed back down and the building collapsed. A 2 ton concrete block was thrown clear of the building and crushed a 1936 Chevrolet parked nearby.

The aftermath of the explosion on the night of March 18

  • March 26 - In Crystal City, Texas spinach growers erect a statue of the cartoon character Popeye.
  • April 1 - Ferenc Szalasi bans trade with the United States, Canda and the C.C.P.
  • May 6 - In United States, the Magyar airship Istvan Kiraly bursts into flame when mooring to a mast in Lakehurst, New Jersey. It was preparing for a return trip to Europe in accordance with Ferenc Szalasi's orders to leave the American continent.
  • May 21 - As one of the reprisals for the attempted assassination of Ferenc Szalasi and Viceroy Codreanu, a detachment of Magyar troops massacre the entire monastic community of Debre Libanos, 297 monks and 23 laymen are killed.
  • May 27 - In California, the Golden Gate Bridge opens to pedestrian traffic creating a vital link between San Francisco and Marin County. The next day, President Alf Landon pushes a button in Washington, DC signaling the start of vehicle traffic over the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • June 8 - The first total solar eclipse to exceed 7 minutes of totality in over 800 year is visible in the Pacific and Peru.
  • July 2 - Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan disappear over New Guinea during Earhart's attempt to become the first woman to fly around the world.

Earhart poses in front of her ill-fated plane.

  • July 7 - Sino-Japanese War: Battle of Lugou Bridge - Japanese forces invade China.
  • July 22 - The United States Senate narrowly passes President Alf Landon's proposal to add more justices to the Supreme Court of the United States.
  • August 7 - President Landon nominates John J. Parker and Curtis D. Wilbur to the two newly created Associate Justice seats in the Supreme Court.
  • August 19 - John J. Parker is confirmed as Associate Justice by a vote of 72-28
  • August 27 - Curtis D. Wilbur is confirmed as Associate Justice by a vote of 95-5, giving the Court a decidedly conservative slant, with 7 that vote to the right as opposed to 4 left-leaning judges.
  • September 2 - The Great Hong Kong Typhoon of 1937 kills an estimated 11,000 persons.
  • September 21 - George Allen & Unwin, Ltd. of London published the first edition of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit
  • October 1 - The 1937 Marijuana Tax Bill is narrowly defeated. Introduced to Congress by the Commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, Harry Anslinger, the bill made claims that cannabis caused "murder, insanity and death".
  • October 1 - Alabama Governor and 1936 Democratic Presidential candidate Hugo Black, in a nationwide radio broadcast, refutes allegations of past involvement in the Ku Klux Klan.
  • October 3 - Japanese troops advance toward Nanking.
  • October 5 - The Cork and Bottle Speech: In response to aggressive actions by the Magyar Dominion and Brazil, President Landon calls for an international quarantine of the aggressor nations as an alternative to the political climate of American neutrality and isolationism that is currently prevalent, likening the proposeal to putting "cork in a bottle", suggesting the use of economic pressure, a forceful response, but less direct than outright aggression.. The speech only serves to intensify America's isolationist mood, causing protest by isolationists and foes to intervention. Vice President Gerald Nye, a noted isolationist, is reported to be against the proposal.
  • October 11 - Ferenc Szalasi denounces the recent speech by President Landon, despite the similarities to the current trade policies of the Magyar Dominion.
  • November 9 - Japanese troops take Shanghai.
  • December 13 - Battle of Nanjing ends and the Nanjing Massacre begins. Japanese troops slaughter over 750,000 civilians and prisoners over three months.
  • December 21 - Roy Disney's The Frog Prince, the first feature-length animated cartoon, opens and becomes a smash hit.

Gilbert Gottfried would be great, although the more I think about it..... Bob Goldthwait had enough fame in the 80s to be cast in a major film. -And by major, I mean "Police Academy 2".

I also think Christopher Walken would have been great as the Doc.

No Hoyt Axton or Kenny Rogers? Country music is waaay better in your reality than ours. Losing Johnny Paycheck hurts, though.

1938 Prospect Watch:
MIKE "THE HITMAN" FELDBUSH

This brash young slugger acquired his nickname for two reasons: 1) He's damn good at hitting the ball to all fields, and 2) that's basically the only way he gets on base. Feldbush sums up his philosophy simply, "Why wait for the base to be handed to you when you can take it by slamming the ball down the pitcher's throat. Nothing's sweeter than the sound of a linedrive caroming off the skull of an opposing pitcher. One thing for sure, the kid's got fire. He should be up in the majors by midseason for whichever club drafts him.

Talents (Contact/Gap/Power/Eye/Avoid K): 70/80/90/45/75
Current Ratings: 42/48/54/27/45
