HOB2 - 1938 Recap

GEHRIG TRIPLE CROWN LEADS PIRATES TO PENNANT
Lou Gehrig won his 9th MVP award and enjoyed his second triple crown season leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to their 5th National League Pennant. Gehrig, who joined the Bucs for some huge bucks prior to the 1937 season received plenty of help from new free agent signee Tony Lazzeri. Lazzeri, who came over from the Red Sox, won the fourth Gold Glove of his career and drove in 93 runs, tied for second on the team with Tommy Henrich. Veterans Pinky Higgins (.294,15,82) and Jimmy Welsh (.303,17,80) were two more reasons why the Pirates had the league's best offense.

BUCKY WALTERS
The biggest surprise in Pittsburgh was Bucky Walters. The 29 year old ex-third baseman attempted to make the majors as a pitcher. He was nothing short of sensational, going 16-11 with a 2.99 era to win the Rookie of the Year Award. Walters career has followed a most unusual path. He was drafted by the Red Sox in the fourth round of the 1931 draft. He spent the next 6 season playing 3B for the Sioux City Packers of the Class A Western League but never received a promotion from the Sox. Boston released him prior to the start of the 1937 season. Walters went home to Philadelphia and became a pitcher for a semi-pro team in 1937. Legend has it a Pittsburgh scout was watching a high school prospect play a game that ran long. The scout missed his train back to Pittsburgh and had a couple of hours to kill waiting for the next train. He noticed a ballpark across from the train station and began to watch a semi-pro game. The pitcher, Walters, was so dominant in the game that the scout decided to convince his bosses to give Walters an invite to spring training. The rest is history. Walters signed a 1 year deal with the Pirates and 6 months later he was pitching in the World Series.

Here is the career line on Bucky Walters:

In real life Walters played the infield with little success for his first 3 major league
seasons. In 1933 he was sold by the Braves to Philadelphia and it was there that Phillies manager Jimmie Wilson, an ex-catcher, converted him to a pitcher. He played for some real bad Phillies teams in the mid-30's before being traded to Cincinnati in 1938. The sidearmer, relying almost exclusively on a sinking fastball, won 27 games in 1939 and was named the NL's MVP. He helped the Reds to back to back pennants in 1939-40. He would also manage the Reds in the late-forties.

The Pittsburgh rotation would also feature Augie Walsh (23-13, 3.48), who topped the 20 win mark for the second straight season, Denny Galehouse (14-9, 3.43) and Danny Macfayden (17-5, 3.44).

Despite Johnny Allen's (22-14, 2.50) second career Markle Award the second place Cardinals were no match for Pittsburgh. Outfielder Earl Averill (.325,24,107) finished second to Gehrig in pretty much every offensive category. 30 year old Ralph Birkofer (18-12) enjoyed the best season of his career. Veteran Ted Lyons won 16 games to improve his career total to 307 victories, passing Jesse Tannehill for sixth place alltime.

The defending champion Cubs fell to third place despite a strong season from free agent pickup Ownie Carroll. Carroll (19-8, 2.53) came over from the Phillies and was on pace to win the Markle Award until he was sidelined for the season with an early September arm injury. Another player plucked from the Phillies rotation was John Bogart. The 38 year old Bogart (16-18, 3.68) started strong but age seemed to be catching up with him near the end of the year. Cincinnati still hasn't recovered from the loss of Gehrig two seasons ago. Jimmie Foxx (.296,22,90) must have felt like he alone had to provide the offense for the Reds. To make matters worse, the Reds have the league's highest payroll and lost a ton of money. Things may get much worse in Cincinnati before they get better.

Thumbs up

TigerFan

I really look forward to reading your posts re:HOB2! How do you handle your managers' tendencies in your replays? Do you use any house rules re: change of tendencies? Do you ever intervene also with play-off pitching choices or do you just let the computer manager make those choices?

Thanks

I let the cpu gm's handle everything. I leave all manager tendancies at normal.

Specs: Not sure what you mean about Galehouse?

I havent got to expansion yet but I understand that is an issue with Wallman's Utility. Hopefully he can patch the problem. Just starting 1940. The 1939 recap is not done yet but I will tell you Ted Williams was drafted first overall and did not go to Boston.

I checked that out when I saw your post but being 1938 and still pre-WWII I thought you might have had something else in mind when you posted.

Yes, I'm looking into that issue. It may be some time before I come up with a solution as I have other development commitments on my hands until the end of the month. But I do recognize the problem and am looking into it.

Oops. I posted the wrong seasons standings. I will correct that tonight when I get home from work. Sorry.

SENATORS REPEAT AS AL CHAMPS
The Washington Senators survived a 4 team battle to win their second straight American League Pennant. Detroit, Chicago and the Yankees all spent at least a day alone in first place between August and October but in the end the Senators experience won out.

In what was essentially the exact same team as last year's World Championship club, the Senators used a balanced offenese to win the Pennant. It featured 4 regulars batting over .300. First baseman Johnny Mize hit .328 and drove in 95 runs, outfielders Tom Miller (.302,14,87) and Dixie Walker (.369,6,49) did well despite missing some time with injuries. Leftfielder Wally Berger had the big bat hitting 20 homers and driving in 110 runs. Catcher Harry Danning proved last season was no fluke by hitting .346 and finishing third in the batting race. Lefty Gomez (17-15), Lou Fette (17-7) and Harry Gumbert (14-16) were the top of the rotation. Schoolboy Rowe, who won 19 games a year ago, struggled the last half of the season and lost his job in the rotation to minor league veteran Jud McLaughlin.

The White Sox and Tigers finished in a tie for second. Chicago had the best pitching staff in the league led by Markle Award winner Johnny Vander Meer (26-6, 1.73). The Tigers had a star hurler of their own in Mike Ryba (25-9, 3.03). Aside from Goose Goslin (.321,10,84) the Yankees had no offensive punch and had to settle for fourth place. Veteran Yankee hurler Pat Caraway (20-11) enjoyed his second 20 win season.

The 5th place Browns were an exciting team to watch leading the American League in runs. The offense featured Pepper Martin (.320,11,98), Arky Vaughan (.353,4,52) and Smead Jolley (.343,11,108). Nels Potter (16-15) was their only consistant starter. The Indians had homerun king Hank Greenberg (.308,28,105) and rookie of the year George Myatt (.317,4,47). Greenberg joined the Indians in June from the Red Sox. It was the biggest trade of the year as Cleveland also added 20 year old second base prospect Bobby Doerr from Boston in exchange for pitcher Spud Chandler. The deal for the 31 year old Chandler was a desperate attempt by the Red Sox to inject some life into the league's worst pitching staff. Chandler had a decent season finishing 17-17 but it couldn't get the Red Sox out of the second division. With a pair of 27 year olds in Frank McCormick (.309,2,49) and Jim Bucher (.276,0,49) ready to play regularly at first and second base the Red Sox felt they could part win Greenberg and Doerr. However, you can't help but think this is the type of deal that gives all the upside to the Indians and is bound to come back and haunt the Red Sox.

Boston did have plenty of offense led by Joe Dimaggio (.364,14,111), who won his second career MVP award, and Lloyd Waner (.398,3,84) who won his 4th career batting title. Waner joined the Red Sox as a free agent from Cleveland in the off-season. Philadelphia finished last despite a monster season from Babe Phelps (.326,27,120). Phelps led the league in rbi's and finished second to Greenberg in home runs.

1938 ALL STAR GAME
The 1938 allstar game turned into the Les Burke show as the veteran Cincinnati secondbaseman had 3 hits including a 2 run homer to lead the Nationals to a convincing 7-1 victory. The win gives the National League a 22-16 lead in the series. Chuck Klein of the Giants had 2 rbi's to help make a winner of Brooklyn's Carl Hubbell. Johnny Vander Meer of the White Sox took the loss. The only American League run came on an rbi single from Philadelphia's Charlie Gehringer.

OTHER NOTES
Dizzy Dean of the Giants tossed just the second no-hitter in 12 years when he blanked Brooklyn 4-0 on June 19th. A 2 out walk to shortstop Buster Chatham ruined the perfect game. It was the only blemish on Dean's record that day.

There were 30 no-hitters in the first 26 years of the HOB2 but just 2 in the 12 years since. Fred Heimach of Detroit tossed the last no-hitter in 1934. Dean's gem was the fourth no-hitter thrown by a Giants hurler, joining Christy Mathewson (1901), Jack Chesbro (1906) and Lucky Wright (1914). Wright's was the only perfect game in league history.

On May 4th Mel Harder of Cincinnati fanned 18 Chicago Cubs batters in a 5-1 Reds win. It was one shy of Walter Johnson's record 19 k's set in 1915. Freddy Lindstrom was the only Chicago hitter not to get fanned by Harder, who got Dolph Camilli and Bob Johnson to whiff 4 times each.

On August 15th Lou Gehrig became just the 7th man to reach the 3000 hit plateau. Gehrig had a 4th inning single off of the Braves George Hockette to reach the milestone. Gehrig also joined Babe Ruth as the only members of the 500 home run club when he took Brooklyn's Wally Hebert deep on September 12th. Gehrig finished the season with 503 roundtrippers, a far cry from Ruth's 713

On July 16th Ted Lyons of the Cardinals beat Cincinnati 7-3 for his 300th career victory. Lyons, who enjoyed his best seasons in Pittsburgh and won 5 Markle Awards, became just the 7th player to win 300. He would win just 2 more games this season as he suffered a back injury in his next start.

Next up the 1938 World Series between Washington and Pittsburgh.

1938 WORLD SERIES : WASHINGTON SENATORS vs PITTSBURGH PIRATES
The Senators attempt to defend their 1937 World Championship against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh has two World Series titles to its credit including a win over the Yankees 4 years ago. This will be a rematch of the classic 1925 series. That series went the full 7 games and featured plenty of comebacks from both clubs. Washington ultimately prevailed as Senator infielder Rogers Hornsby was the hero, driving in 2 runs in a 4-2 game 7 victory.

Both clubs are completely healthy and ready to go as the series opens in Forbes Field.

GAME 1 - Bucky Walters, the converted thirdbaseman who won the rookie of the year award, gets the start for the Pirates in the opener against steady Lefty Gomez. Both pitchers are at the top of their game in the early going. Walters has a no-hitter through 4 while Gomez has allowed just 2 Pittsburgh hits. In the bottom of the 5th, Pittsburgh third sacker Pinky Higgins leads off with a double. A walk to Gabby Hartnett and Jim McLeod error loads the bases. Pirates outfielder Jimmy Welsh delivers a sacrifice fly to score Higgins with the game's first run. Walters is, of course, left in to hit for himself but looks terrible as Gomez fans him. Johnny Frederick steps to the plate with 2 out and breaks the game open with a triple to score both Hartnett and Tommy Henrich. The Pirates score 3 runs on just 2 hits.

Walters finally loses the no-hitter in the 6th when Washington catcher Harry Danning singles but he is stranded at second. Gomez has also settled down and through 8 the Pirates have just 4 hits and the Senators but one. Pittsburgh goes quietly in the bottom of the 8th and Walters needs just 3 outs for the shutout. Dixie Walker leads off with a single and Stu Martin follows with a double. The Pirates elect to intentionally walk Johnny Mize to load the bases with the dangerous Wally Berger coming to the plate. The move pays off as Berger bounces one back to the pitcher and Walters comes home for the force. The Pirates get two for the price of one as Hartnett completes the doubleplay with a throw to first that nips Berger by a step. Two away runners on second and third as Walters works to Tom Miller. He is a little too fine and Miller draws a walk to load the bases. Eric McNair, the MVP of the 1937 series, steps up and delivers a single to score a pair of runs making it 3-2 Pittsburgh with runners on the corners. Harry Danning has a chance to tie the game but the Washington catcher grounds out to first baseman Lou Gehrig and the Washington threat falls just short.

GAME 2 - Harry Danning has more success this day, delivering 3 hits and 2 rbi's leading the Senators to a 5-3 win. Tommy Henrich's bases loaded double in the fifth accounts for all the Pittsburgh runs off of Washington starter Lou Fette. 23 game winner Augie Walsh took the loss, allowing 11 Washington hits.

GAME 3 - The Series shifts to Washington and the bats shift into high gear. Starters Denny Galehouse of Pittsburgh and the Senators Harry Gumbert are long gone before the dust settles. The two clubs combine for 30 hits as Pittsburgh wins 13-9 to take a 2 games to one lead in the series. Billy Rogell drives in 4 runs for Pittsburgh with Tony Lazzeri and Pinky Higgins each delivering 3 hits. Johnny Mize homered and drove in 2 runs for Washington. Dixie Walker and Len Koenecke also had 2 rbi's each. Ray Starr got the win in relief despite pitching just 1/3 an inning. Jud McLaughlin, the third of 4 Washington pitchers, took the loss.

GAME 4 - Another 30 hit slugfest as both Gomez and Walters get roughed up. In the end the Senators prevail 14-7. Dixie Walker, Wally Berger, Tom Miller and Harry Danning all homer for Washington with Miller's being a grand slam. Miller and Walker each had 3 hits. Lou Gehrig had 3 hits for the losers, missing only a homerun in a bid for the cycle.

GAME 5 - Down 3-0 the Senators rally with 8 unanswered runs in the final 3 innings for an 8-3 victory and a 3-2 series lead. Dixie Walker's 3 run homer was the big blow. Lou Fette beat Augie Walsh for the second time in the series.

GAME 6 - Pittsburgh's turn for a comeback as the Senators build a 5-1 lead before the Pirates stage an 8th inning rally. Lou Gehrig and Gabby Hartnett each have 2-rbi singles as the Pirates tie the game. Pittsburgh has a chance to win it in the bottom of the ninth but Tommy Henrich's fly ball with the bases loaded and 2 out is caught at the warning track. Washington goes 1-2-3 in the top of the 10th and the Pirates are well on their way to doing the same when Harry Gumbert retires the first two batter. However, Gabby Hartnett, who tied the game in the 8th, ends it in the 10th with a walkoff solo homerun to force a 7th game. Ray Starr gets his second win of the series in relief.

GAME 7 - Lefty Gomez and Bucky Walters meet for the third time in the series. Johnny Mize greets Walters early with a 2 run homer to put Washington ahead in the top of the first. Pittsburgh answers with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning but Washington regains the lead in the second when Harry Danning hits a solo homerun. It remains 3-2 through 7 innings in an extremely tense game. In the 8th a pair of walks and a Johnny Mize single load the bases for Tom Miller with 2 out. Miller fould off close to a half dozen pitches before connecting on a Walters fastball. It flies 423 feet over the wall in left center. A Grand Slam! The Senators lead 7-2 and are 6 outs away from another title. Pittsburgh threatens in the home half of the 8th but Tommy Henrich pops out to strand a pair of baserunners. Lefty Gomez takes the hill in the 9th trying to complete the game. Pinch hitter Tom Carey grounds out and then Gomez fans Johnny Frederick. Billy Rogell gives the Pirates a flicker of hope when he singles however Lou Gehrig, who hit a quiet .276 in the series, grounds into a force play to end the game.

Tom Miller with 13 rbi's in the series, including the game 7 grand slam, is an easy choice for the MVP award. The award seems like a fitting way for the 41 year old to end his career but Miller says he will be back next season.

Underappreciated for most of his career, Miller has posted some amazing numbers. Only Frankie Frisch with 9, has played in more World Series than Miller. However, Miller has been on the winning team in 6 of the 7 World Series he played in. He has a lifetime .319 batting average and won a batting title and the A.L. MVP Award in 1935. However, he was named to just 2 allstar teams in his career.

Miller spent most of 4 seasons in the minors before finally cracking the Yankees roster full time
in 1922.

Miller was a second round pick of the Yankees, 26th overall in 1918. His first major league hit, in his second at
bat was a home run off of Ben Hunt of Detroit. He went 3-for-5 with 3 runs and 3 rbi's on that day. The homer did not come in his first major league at bat as he grounded out against the A's Max Fiske in his only plate appearance the season before.

The Yankees traded him to the Cubs in 1927 for pitcher Ted Wingfield, who never appeared in a major league game. The deal was just a cost-cutting move by the Yankees at the time and Miller, who was a free agent at seasons end, resigned with the Bronx Bombers the following season. However, his stay in the Windy City was fruitful as he won a World Series with the Cubs and narrowly missed being named World Series MVP losing out to teammate Frankie Frisch. Following the Yankees World Series win in 1933 Miller moved to the A's as a free agent and enjoyed the best season of his career. The next year, 1936. he won a World Series in Philadelphia with the A's.. He signed with the Senators prior to the 1937 season.

He wants to reach the 3000 hit plateau but with 195 to go he may fall just short of it. Either way his career should end at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. In real life the career of Thomas Royall Miller lasted just 9 games and 8 at bats with the Boston Braves in 1918-19.

Next up the 1939 draft and we see where Ted Williams goes.
