Tiger Fan's History of Sports Replay
Some of you may remember with earlier releases of OOTP I would run my own History of Baseball (or HOB as it became known) replay with the goal to recreate baseball history. More recently I have been focused on running multi-sport simulations because of the great selection of games that are available. This time I am going to combine the two ideas and run a History of Sports replay.
While I enjoyed the detail of my day-to-day all-sports replays I found I missed the sheer volume of history that quick simming could give me so for this dynasty I will return to my roots and sim a year at a time rather than a day at a time. This will allow me to begin shortly after the turn of the century and hopefully continue right thru the 1900's and into the 21st century. The recaps will hopefully read like pages from a sports almanac where each post will cover the happenings of a year in sports. I will aim to be as historically accurate as I can but because of the nature of the games I am going to use there will be plenty of fictional players and teams in a number of the sports. I am going to start the full recaps with the year 1910. Here are the sports and games I will be using. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - OOTP2006 beginning a league in 1901. I am going to use the ARod/Garlon database and begin my league in 1901 and import real rookies each season as we progress through the universe. BOXING - TBCB2 I will begin in 1910 using mh2365's great Louisville Boxing Association database which already has a history built up since 1901. While I can never hope to duplicate the great detail of his dynasty :check it out here: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ad.php?t=58759 it is a great read and shows just how much you can do with the game. COLLEGE FOOTBALL - I am using BBCF with a modified database I created to have league allignment based loosely on the 1940's. The game is more designed for modern day play so there will obviously be much more passing than in the early days of the game as well as BCS bowl games and far fewer independant teams than real life. I will start in 1901. The game will mainly contain fictional players but I will add a number of real life college football greats as the years go by. COLLEGE BASKETBALL - I will be using TCB and begin my college basketball universe in 1920. The database will be slightly modified to include some defunct schools and I do plan on creating real life NBA players as high school seniors and let them attend college and hopefully make the NBA. KENTUCKY DERBY - The Kentucky Derby website gives a detailed recap of each Derby and I have figured out a way to rate the horses myself using Down The Stretch, a text based game. Unfortunately I can not find detailed results for the other two triple crown races so I may restrict this replay to including just the Derby. INDY 500 - Pat Premo has a freeware DOS game called Indy 500 that includes ratings for every race. I will use that beginning with the first Indy 500 in 1911 NHL - I will be using the WhatIfSports matchup site and Pairdice for Windows when the NHL begins 1917-18. I really wish I could figure out a way to incorporate Eastside Hockey Manager but there is just no way to edit the league size or the database for each rookie class. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE - I will start the NFL in 1923 and will be manually moving my top college seniors across from BBCF each year. To begin with I will use Total Pro Football, at least until hopefully GDS releases a new pro football sim. TPF will also force me to have a 30 team universe from day one. NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION - I will be using Total Pro Basketball beginning in the real season the BAA(now NBA) started - 1947-48. Rookies will be imported from it's companion game Total College Basketball. GOLF - The yet to be released game from Gary Gorski's new Wolverine Studios will join my replay very shortly after it's release. OLYMPICS - For the olympic games I will be using my own very basic quickplay excel formulas - I hessitate to call it game because it is so basic - beginning with the Stockholm Summer Games in 1912. The Winter Olympics made their debut in 1924. I have found a terrific site that has complete recaps for virtually every Olympic games and I am able to get all the information I need from there. Prior to starting the year by year recaps in 1910 I am going to begin with a quick look at what has happened from 1901-1909. This decade will focus almost exclusively on major league baseball.

Okay, here is the first of the mini-recaps taking us from 1901 thru 1909. The next few may not be as long as the this one as I want to get to 1910 where things can get going.
THE YEAR IN REVIEW: 1901 KEELER HAS RECORD SETTING SEASON AT THE DISH Wee Willie Keeler set a National Baseball League record by batting at an amzing .447 clip during the 1901 season. Keeler, who surpassed Hugh Duffy's 1894 mark of .440, was an easy choice as League MVP. Despite Keeler's heroics, his Brooklyn ballclub could finish no better than tied for second behind the powerful Philadelphia Phillies. To make matters worse for Brooklyn, at the end of the season Keeler bolted to the Phillies. The league champs, who finished 4 games ahead of both the Superbas and St Louis, were led to the title by the pitching triumvirate of Doc White (24-7, 2.52), Al Orth (21-20, 4.02) and John Dunn (22-12, 3.32). Offensively, the Phillies relied on the bats of Ed Delahanty (.345,14,119) and Elmer Flick (.309,16,99). Nobody scored more runs than the Superbas who were led by Keeler (.447,1,42) and Jimmy Sheckard (.333,11,94), a duo that combined for 143 stolen bases. However, the Superbas pitching, Jack Harper (17-8, 3.18) excluded, was awful. Rookie hurler Ed Murphy (25-12, 2.60) was the big surprise in St Louis, winning top pitcher honors and leading the Cardinals to a 77 win season. Outfielders Jesse Burkett (.301,6,70) and Emmet Heidrick (.324,8,81) carried the offense. Pittsburgh and Cincinnati finished tied for fourth. The Pirates had Honus Wagner (.318,12,72), Ginger Beaumont (.344,14,99) and Bill Keister (.301,2,57) along with pitching stars Jesse Tannehill (24-18, 3.32) and Jack Chesbro (20-19, 3.69). The leader in Cincinnati was Sam Crawford (.330,22,81), a 21 year old who led the league in home runs. Noodles Hahn (22-19, 2.64) also had a strong season for the Ohio ballclub. It was a long season in Gotham but the emergence of Christy Mathewson (17-13, 2.52) gives cause for great hope for Giants fans. The 20 year old was one of the few bright spots for the club this season. The 7th place Chicago side has some good young hitters but the pitching is very suspect. Topsy Hartsel (.295,3,51) and Frank Chance (.231,0,45) look to have potential although it was rarely shown this campaign. Dead last in both pitching and hitting, this was an awful season for the Beantowners. Add in the success of the rival American League entry and one has to question the future success of National League baseball in Boston. Only veteran outfielder Billy Hamilton (.301,9,64) has any cause to be proud of his performance this season. Code:

Hahn CIN 22-19 BOSTON IS THE CLASS OF NEW LEAGUE With the most potent offense and the stingiest pitching staff in the league it is easy to see why the Boston Americans emerged with the title in the first season of American League baseball. Veteran outfielder Buck Freeman (.330,21,124) was named the loop's top performer but he had plenty of help at the plate from mates Freddy Parent (.339,4,40), Jimmy Collins (.305,1,80) and Charlie Hemphill (.319,4,67). Rube Foster (29-12, 2.72), William Malone (25-10, 3.07) and Cy Young (17-8, 2.80) formed the best pitching staff in the league. Despite a huge season from pitcher Case Patton (25-15, 2.83) the Washington entry finished a distant second. John Farrell (.335,3,52), Bill Coughlin (.304,14,91) and Mike Grady (.294,12,75) led the Washington offense. George Stovey (29-10, 2.53) was named the league's top pitcher and he combined with Rube Waddell (17-10, 3.62) and league batting champ Zaza Harvey (.358,9,89) to get Chicago a third place finish. Fourth place went to the Baltimore Orioles who were led by player-manager John McGraw (.328,0,69) and outfielder Mike Donlin (.329,11,112). Harry Howell (23-16, 4.65) anchored the staff. Cleveland was never in the hunt despite a pair of solid outfielders in Cy Seymour(.333,4,59) and Jack McCarthy (.339,0,46). A strong season from infielder Pop Dillon (.337,0,52) was nowhere near enough for 6th place Detroit. John Anderson hit .309 and Ned Garvin won 17 games but that wasn't enough to keep Milwaukee out of the second division and poor attendance caused the franchise to move to St Louis for the 1902 campaign. The last place Philadelphia entry had all the offense in the world thanks to Nap Lajoie(.331,18,82), Socks Seybold (.315,3,85) and Harry Davis (.282,9,80) but their pitching was the worst in the league. PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES vs BOSTON AMERICANS GAME 1 : Buck Freeman drove in 3 runs with a pair of doubles as the Boston Americans beat up on Philadelphia starter Doc White en route to a 13-4 victory in the series opener. White was chased in th 4th inning after allowing 9 runs (7 earned). Rube Foster went the distance for Boston, earning the win despite allowing 11 hits. GAME 2 : The hometown Americans again got off to a quick start, building a 5-0 lead through 2 innings and then hanging on for a 5-3 victory. Outfielder George Van Haltren had a pair of hits and 2 rbi's for the winners. William Malone pitched a 3 hitter for the victory although he did walk 7. Al Orth took the loss. GAME 3 : After a day off for travel the Phillies once again decided to start White and he was hammered for the second time. Boston plated 4 runs in the third and beat the hometown Phillies 6-1 to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series. Buck Freeman had 2 more hits and scored a pair of runs while Boston lead-off batter Billy Gilbert reached base all 5 times he was up. GAME 4 : Philadelphia stays alive with a 7-3 victory as Phillie bats pound out 10 hits and work Boston starter William Malone for 7 free passes. GAME 5 : The series ends as Cy Young tosses a 5-hitter to help Boston to a 3-1 victory. Chalk up two more hits in the game for American first baseman Buck Freeman, who finished 9 for 21 in the series. Chick Stahl had a pair of doubles in the game including a 2-run scoring hit in the 4th inning that would prove to be the difference in the ballgame. OTHER 1901 SPORTING NOTES MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - Minneapolis defeats Jersey City 3 games to two to win the Minor League World Series. Millers outfielder Jeff Decker hits .373 to win the minor league batting title. THE YEAR IN REVIEW: 1902
BOSTON DOMINATES AMERICAN LEAGUE AGAIN The Boston Americans won their second straight league championship in convincing fashion, finishing with a 9 game bulge over second place Baltimore. The key to the Americans success was their big 3 on the mound : Rube Foster (23-14, 2.51), James 'Nixey' Callahan (26-11, 2.77) and William Malone (25-12, 3.58). There was also no shortage of offense as Buck Freeman (.314,8,121), Patsy Dougherty (.342,0,57), George Van Haltren (.324,0,77) and Chick Stahl (.328,2,68) all enjoyed stellar campaigns. American League MVP Mike Donlin (.343,11,106) kept the Orioles in the race for much of the season. He was helped by Jimmy Williams (.322,7,109) and John McGraw (.302,1,73). Philadelphia's Nap Lajoie (.348,9,78) won the batting title. Code:

Al Orth (28-11, 2.53) anchored the rotation and was named the loop's top pitcher while the offense featured Willie Keeler (.345,8,95) and Ed Delahanty (.335,5,81). Veteran Wilbert Robinson (.370,1,50) was the league's batting average leader and he almost singlehandedly carried the Giants to second place. His only help on offense came from Sammy Strang (.312,0,42) and Elmer Flick (.316,6,66). After being cut by the Americans, veteran hurler Cy Young (16-9, 3.78) provided a steadying influence on the mound and was instrumental in tutoring 21 year old phenom Christy Mathewson (17-13, 3.19). At season's end Young announced his retirement from the game. He leaves with 367 career victories. The other big story in the National League was provided by the powerful bat of Cincinnati outfielder Sam Crawford (.369,21,88). Crawford was named player of the year mainly due to the majesty of his crushing home runs. Code:

GAME 2 - Rube Foster tosses a 6-hit shutout and Freddy Parent drives in the only run with a 3rd inning single as the Americans prevail 1-0. The Phillies lose despite a 3 hitter from pitcher Harry Felix. GAME 3 - Van Haltren has 3 hits and drives in Patsy Dougherty with a pair of runs as the Americans win in Philadelphia by a 3-2 count. Callahan has another strong outing for his second win of the series. GAME 4 - Boston completes the sweep with a 7-5 victory in Game 4. 2 more hits for Van Haltren, who batted .500 in the series, while Buck Freeman and Billy Gilbert also deliver 2 hits each. Rube Foster gets his second win of the series while Felix is the losing pitcher once again. It was the Americans second straight World Series victory. OTHER 1901 NOTES MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - It took extra innings in the 5th and deciding game but the St Paul Saints emerged as the minor league baseball champion with a 3 games to two victory over the Montreal Royals in the Little World Series. Former Chicago White Sox Fred Hartman hit .370 to lead the Saints to the American Association league title. Montreal emerged victorious in an International League race that saw 7 teams seperated by just 9 games in the standings. THE YEAR IN REVIEW: 1903
BOB WICKER LEADS CARDINALS TO NL CROWN The St Louis Cardinals rode the right arm of 25 year old Bob Wicker all the way to a World Series title in 1903. Wicker (30-12, 2.12) was named the National League's top pitcher in just his second season in the big leagues. Offensive help for St Louis came from Joe Kelley (.322,3,71), Bobby Wallace (.324,3,39) and Emmet Heidrick (.311,5,51). For the second straight season the New York Giants finished second. Pitcher Christy Mathewson(23-4, 2.70) continued to shine but the offense struggled after veteran Wilbert Robinson (.388 in 70 games) went down with an injury. Topsy Hartsell (.344,9,75) of the Chicago Cubs was named the league's top hitter. Code:

Chesbro PIT 21-15 Led by young pitchers Chief Bender (17-9, 2.26) and Weldon Henley (21-7, 2.12) the Philadelphia Athletics became the first team other than Boston to win an American League title. Veteran Nap Lajoie (.311,9,69) and a young phenom named Sal Azocar (.362,2,21) provided the offensive punch. Lajoie was named the League's Most Valuable Player while Azocar won the batting title. Injuries and inconsistancy on the mound ended Boston's chances for a third straight title. Ace Rube Foster was lost for the year in July with a serious arm injury while William Malone was released after starting the season with an 8-16 record. Malone did sign with the Phillies but has likely lost too much to play for the big league club next season. Code:

GAME 5 - Pitching again was the story as Weldon Henley pitched a 7-hit shutout to help Philadelphia to a 1-0 victory. GAME 6 - Chief Bender pitched 7 innings of no-hit ball and the A's built a 2-0 lead thanks to the first homerun in World Series history, a 2-run shot off the bat of Socks Seybold in the 4th inning. However, the wheels fell off for Bender and the A's in the 8th as St Louis scored 3 runs - all coming on a homerun from Joe Kelley. Philadelphia went quietly in the 9th and the Cardinals became the first National League team to win the World Series with a 3-2 victory in Game 6. Awesome....
I've enjoyed all of your dynasties to date....they inspire alot of ideas I get for my own leagues. On a side note....is Down the Stretch decent? It's in the bargain bin at a store near my work. Horse racing isn't really my cup of tea...but neither was Title Bout until I started playing it. |

THE YEAR IN REVIEW: 1904
1904: IT'S A CHICAGO THING 1904 was a great year to be a baseball fan in the Windy City as both the National League Cubs and American League White Sox won league titles. The key for the Cubs was the pitching of Jim St. Vrain (29-16, 1.57) who was an unanimous choice as the National League's top pitcher. St. Vrain combined with Bob Rhoads (25-12, 2.12) to give the Cubs the best 1-2 punch in the league. The offense was adequate with infielders Frank Chance (.303,0,58), Johnny Evers (.283,1,50) and Joe Tinker (.241,3,37) getting support from outfielder Danny Green (.281,6,71). On the southside, the White Sox had pitcher Rube Waddell (20-13, 1.81) outfielder Zaza Harvey (.295,4,54) as their team leaders. The best offense in the Junior circuit belong to the New York Highlanders and featured league MVP Mike Donlin (.311,6,77) along with batting champ Freddy Parent (.327,1,52). The problem for New York player-manager John McGraw (.311,6,77) was a lack of quality pitching, aside from Ambrose Puttman(26-15, 3.10) which doomed the team to last place in what was a pretty competitive league. GAME 3 - Joe Tinker had 2 hits and scored 3 runs as the Cubs took game 3 by a 4-1 count. St Vrain again outduelled Waddell in the contest. GAME 4 - The White Sox pull even in the series with a 2-1 win in 11 innings. Ed Walsh went the distance for the winners surrendering just 5 hits in 11 innings while getting 11 strikeouts. GAME 5 - Zaza Harvey drove in 3 runs in a 5-2 White Sox victory. The win gives the Sox a 3-2 series lead as we shift back to Wrigley. GAME 6 - Zaza Harvey strikes again. The White Sox outfielder ties the game at 2 with a 2-run shot in the 6th inning off of St. Vrain. The Sox win it on a Frank Isbell rbi single in the 8th to make the final score 3-2 White Sox. The Sox take the series in 6 games as Zaza Harvey is named series MVP after batting .381 with a homer and 6 rbi's in the postseason. OTHER 1904 NOTES MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - The Buffalo Bisons became the first team to repeat as Little World Series champions after winning their best of 5 matchup against American Association champion Kansas City in 4 games. The International League champion Bisons were led by several prospects from the parent Detroit Tigers including pitcher Mal Eason, who was named the I.L.'s top pitcher following a 23-8 season. 1904 COLLEGE FOOTBALL RECAP 2 years after losing in the National title game the Tennessee Volunteers can finally call themselves the best team in college football, although the University of Virginia might take exception to that statement. The Vols topped previously unbeaten Michigan 30-14 in the Orange Bowl to earn the number one ranking. Tennessee was a controversial choice for the title game over Virginia, which had to settle for a Sugar Bowl date with Ivy League champion Yale. Virginia won that contest 23-20 on a late field goal to finish the season as the only unbeaten team in college football this season. However, the Cavaliers got little respect in the polls and finished 3rd. The Heisman Trophy went to University of Pittsburgh junior running back Harry Eller, who led the nation with 2056 yards on the ground. Eller, who is the first player not from Army to win the award, also had 24 touchdowns this season. Virginia quartback Pete Bender also received serious consideration for the award. Bender passed for 4331 yards and threw 40 touchdowns with just 9 interceptions on the year. Code:

He started the year with an easy bout against 20th ranked Billy Smith. The Australian proved he had a lot of hear as he refused to give up, and despite being clearly overmatched, fought gamely. In June, Johnson had a real tough time with Dominic McCaffrey as the fight went back and forth. Johnson's eye began to swell shut in the 12th round but McCaffrey failed to take advantage of it and the champ stayed outside until the final bell to preserve victory. In December Johnson destroyed then number one contender John C Heenan, winning all 5 rounds before the bout was stopped by the ring doctor in the 6th. Code:

Awesome work! What you need in there, when it starts, is the World Cup. (You already have the olympics.) Though I can't think of a decent sim. That's the one thing that lets Football Manager down. No historical play.
BTW, where can I get that Indy 500 game? I've done several searches and can't find it. |

A minor league World Series? Okay, I may have to get 2K6 sooner than I thought.
