Cleveland Indians career replay

My replay starts in 1904. I have the finacials turned on but will only make trades that the computer offers me. I am playing out every game so please be patient with my updates. I have finished 1904 and will post my results next.

1904 season recap

Well 1904 is over and the Indians capped off a great year with a 4 games to one defeat of the Giants in the World Series. In a season which included a 112 wins there were surprises and a few disapointments.

When I first took over the team I figured that the rotation would be anchored by Addie Joss and Earl Moore. Well I was half right. Even though I was not dissapointed in Joss's 19-7 1.96 he was only tied for fourth on the teams in wins. The Indians were anchored by Moore and his 25-6 1.96 line. The pitcher who surprised me the most was Otto Hess. Otto won the Golden Arm Award with a record of 24-7 and an ERA of 1.78. Donahue and Bernhard also shined with records of 20-11 and 19-6 respectively. The bullpen was closed out by Bob Rhoads who had a 2.27 ERA and led the AL with 8 saves.

The Indians were alot more than their pitching staff though. Bill Bradley won the Silver Slugger Award by leading the AL with 111 RBI to go along with his .296 AVG and his 11 HR. I thought that the teams MVP was Elmer Flick. He led the AL with 104 SBs, 124 runs, and a .344 AVG. The team also had the AL homerun leader in Charlie Hickman with 15 and the AL doubles leader in Nap Lajoie with 48.

The team gelled together very well from the start, they led wire to wire and at the season's end were an amazing 12 games ahead of the second place White Sox. They lost the first game of the series to the Giants and made me think of all the stories I have read about people's teams dominating during the season and then losing in the post season. Game two came and the Indians shelled starter Joe McGinnity for 8 runs and never looked back.

1904-05 off-season

The Indians were very happy with their team and didn't really want any changes but one couldn't be avoided. Charlie Hickman the Indians #5 hitter and best power threat decided the Indian's offers disgusted him and he would not resign with them. The Indians brass knew this would hurt but considering they won the pennant by 12 games they figured they did not need to go out and spend huge money on a replacement seeing as they already had George Stovall. The only free agent signing the Indians made was signing 3B Harry Wolverton. Bill Bradley didn't have anyone to back him up last year and played in 152 of 154 games, hopefully in 1905 he will be able to see a little more rest.

Stay tuned for my 1905 season recap.

1905 Season Recap

1904 was a great season, it was the first year of my Indians replay and I won the World Series. I was not offered any trades by the computer and my team went unchanged from the way it imported from the database. I was sure 1905 would be different. As I mentioned in my off-season recap my one GM duty of 1904 was that I managed to insult Charlie Hickman so much that he took his AL leading 15 homeruns to my biggest competitor the White Sox. In 1904 the Indians led wire to wire, after the first month of 1905 I could tell that would not be the case again.

In the early part of the season I think the offense missed having Hickman in the lineup. The pitching staff was as great as they were in 1904 but the Indians lost many an April game 1-0 or 2-1. At the end of April George Stovall was batting .201 with only 6 RBI. Bill Bradley and Elmer Flick both felt the absence of Hickman as their stats were also down in the first month compared to their 1904 stats. But as the weather started to warm up so did Stovall. By the end of the year he had raised his batting average to a respectable .265. George also provided 7 HR and 78 RBI, both of which seemed unattainable on May 1. Bradley once agin drove in over 100 runs but his .273 11 105 was not enough to repeat his Silver Slugger Award from 1904. Flick's 1905 once agian saw him top the AL in SB with the same 104 he had from 1904. His AVG and R dropped signifigantly though to .293 and 95. Flick's numbers in no way were looked down upon by the Cleveland brass but I would like to his AVG creep back up over the .300 level. Nap Lajoie had another solid but unexceptional year. Nap missed 32 games because of two different injuries but still produced a line of .298 4 76 and 46 SB.

The pitching staff that was so dominant in 1904 was still great but just couldn't match the great success they had the year before. One pitcher who didn't dissapoint was Otto Hess. Otto repeated as the Golden Arm winner with a great 26-11 record to go with his 2.03 ERA. Earl Moore didn't however repeat his 1904 season but still posted a solid 19-10 2.20 line. The pitcher who disapointed me the most was Addie Joss. When I started this replay I figured he would be one of the first players inducted into the Indians Hall of Fame. Unfortunatley his wins dropped from 19 in 1904 to 14 in 1905. One of the reasons for his 14-13 record was a 5 week stay on the disabled list, a problem many of the Indians pitchers would face at one point in time during the year. Injuries weren't a problem for the 1904 champion Indians but in 1905 they lost Lajoie for 32 games, Joss for 4 weeks, and lost both Otto Hess and Earl Moore in the last week of the season. Losing both Otto and Earl in the last week would have been OK because they could use the off-season to let their injuries heal except for the fact that the Indians were making their second straight appearance in the World Series.

The 1905 Indians were 1 game out of first place at the All-star break but had a great second half and ended up 9 games out in front of their hated rivals the White Sox with a record of 98-56. In the World Series they faced a Pirates team that had won 104 games during the regular season. With the confidence of their last year victory only something awful could disrupt their attempt to repeat as champions, and something awful it was. As previously mentioned Hess and Moore would be unavailable for the Series. The battered pitching staff could not slow down the potent attck of the Pirates and the Pirates went on to sweep the Indians in 4 games. Oh well better luck next time.

Breaking News Story

Red Donahue Arrested In Brothel

After a grueling baseball season players often need to find ways to unwind. A few beers and the company of a lady are often calming and relaxing times for ballplayers during the off-season. Last Friday Red Donahue was arrested inside of a local Cleveland brothel for disturbing the peace. When interviewed Officer Tom Fields was quoted as saying " Red was cuffed and hauled off after failing to pay for his indevor with a local prostitute named Candy Le Charn. When Miss Candy told Red his favors ran a price of $250 he went irrate and started tossing chairs and plants across the lobby of the brothel. Red thought that his celebrity status should of earned him a freebie. "

Once told of this disturbance GM of the Indians, Chief Wahoo, was very upset. " I understand that not all players are saints, and that some even partake in some illegal activities at times. But this kind of behavior will not be tollerated by the Indians. After all when a guy is making $10,000,000 a year and he is complaing about $250! Hell I had to pay $400 for that same broad just last week. "

After decidng not to resign Red Donahue because of his cheapness with prostitutes the Indians GM needed to fill a spot in the rotation. In the free agent market was lefty Doc White. Doc and RF Jiggs Donahue were both signed. Here are their career stats to this date.

how much are you paying Doc White? He looks like a star? Age? Is Jiggs any relation to Red? Maybe he likes the sluts too...

Doc is making $12,000,000 a year for 3 years. He is 26. Yeah he should fit in nicely with the Indians rotation. For some reason I cut off his 1905 stats when his record dropped to 11-12 with a 2.69 ERA.
And no I don't think the Jiggs is related to Red. He too may take in the company of a professional woman but he is known for shelling out money so I don't think he will have the same problem as Red.

1st Indian no-hitter

Cleveland, obviously still hurting from their defeat in the World Series has started off slowly this year. After 17 games their record stood at 8-9. Sometimes it takes one game to turn a season around. Hopefully Earl Moore's 4th start of the year will do this for the Indians. In a game against the Red Sox, Earl had his best stuff all night long. He allowed no hits and only three walks in an 11-0 whipping of Boston. Maybe the rest of the team can learn a little from the pre-game superstitions Earl follows. The night before each game Moore pitches he sleeps on the mound naked. On a side note, women and small children will not be allowed in the stadium before 8 AM.
