![]() 'Wahoo Sam' Becoming An Arizona League Legend After seven years of the Arizona League, one player has truly become the league's superstar -- Wahoo Sam Crawford of the Flagstaff Lumberjacks. The Wahoo, Nebraska native, an outfielder by trade, has found a home in the ponderosa pines of Flagstaff, elevation 7,000 feet. "The air is so thin up here, the ball just seems to fly off my bat," Crawford said. "This has been an incredible franchise to be a part of. It all came together this season when we won the Arizona League championship. "I feel like I could play another 20 years." That's not good news for opposing pitchers. Here are Crawford's season by season numbers. He's been an All-Star all seven years in the league and has won the Northern League Big Stick Award an amazing six times: Code:

1907 Winter Meetings
![]() The 1907 Winter Meetings were held in Carefree this year to commemorate the moving of the Havasu franchise to the Maricopa County town (Flagstaff agreed to this move, even though they won the 1907 title). It was a very festive time for everyone, with Carefree giving anyone and everyone associated with the Arizona League the royal treatment... "We will take good care of them in Carefree," one official said. "We may be small in numbers, but I can tell you we love our baseball here. Folks north of Phoenix now have a local alternative." The Carefree officials did take numerous questions on keeping "Blues" as a nickname. "It sounds kind of depressing to me," Jerome's manager told the Arizona Republic newspaper. "Oh well, they were a depressing franchise for the past seven years, so I guess that fits. We'll get much better competition from Prescott..." The restructing of the Arizona League is now set for 1908, with Prescott moving to the Northern League. Here is the breakdown of the two, eight-team divisions now: NORTHERN Cottonwood Monsoon Flagstaff Lumberjacks Grand Canyon River Runners Jerome Copper Miners Kayenta Turquoise Warriors Payson Longhorns Prescott Antelopes Sedona Scorpions SOUTHERN Bisbee Prospectors Carefree Blues Nogales Apaches Phoenix Dust Devils Tempe Sun Devils Tombstone Epitaphs Tucson Saguaros Yuma Prisoners Retirements Lots of players hanging it up this season: Jesse Burkett retires ... Jimmy Collins retires ... Ed Delahanty retires ... Jack Doyle retires ... Bill Everitt retires ... John Gochnauer retires ... Pink Hawley retires ... Jack Mccarthy retires ... Barney Mcfadden retires ... John Warner retires ... George Yeager retires ... Jack Thoney retires ... Tommy Raub retires ... Tom Fisher retires ... JER: Cy Vorhees retires ... LAK: Hughie Jennings retires ... (had a 28-game hitting streak in '04) PAY: Bill Carrick retires ... PAY: Dick Harley retires ... KAY: Bill Hoffer retires ... CTW: Roger Denzer retires ... CTW: George Van haltren retires ... CTW: Tom Leahy retires ... PHX: Billy Lauder retires ... PHX: Charlie Babb retires ... YUM: Joe Mcginnity retires ... NOG: Ed Scott retires ... TOM: Emmet Heidrick retires ... BIS: Aleck Smith retires ... The most prominent on the list is LF "Big Ed" Delahanty. He played his entire career in Phoenix before being released in July of 1907. He was a two-time Big Stick Award Winner (1903 and '04) and was a five-time All-Star. Commissioner Phinieus "Doc" Victory bestowed upon Delahanty a Player of Distinction award. Jesse "Crab" Burkett was the 1901 Big Stick Award winner for the SL, playing for Prescott. He also has been tabbed a Player of Distinction. He had three five-hit games and once had a 20-game hitting streak. Pitcher Roger Denzer, another Player of Distinction, was the Best Young Player (Rookie of the Year) for 1901 and the Top Hurler for 1902, playing in Cottonwood. He was a three-time All-Star, who finished with a career 90-52 record and 2.42 ERA... CF Emmet Heidrick spent his entire career in Tombstone, garnering Player of Distinction honors. He was beloved by the Epis, a five-time All-Star, a lifetime .292 hitter (with 1,100+ hits). He tore up his rib cage in the 1907 playoffs, ending his career at age 31. A tragic story for a great player...

At the close of the winter meetings, the 16 AZL teams reloaded their rosters. The Kayenta Turquoise Warriors used their first overall selection to take 19-year-old pitcher Bill Bailey... 1908 Season Wrap Up
Northern League The dominant team from the first two season of the Arizona League is back on top -- the Cottonwood Monsoon. And for the first time ever, the Kayenta Turquoise Warriors make the playoffs as the wildcard team! The Warriors had been third 2-3 times but never second or first... Some celebrating for sure in Navajo Country... Cottonwood wasn't a stellar hitting team (9th out of 16th in the league) but had the top pitching staff (2.30 ERA, opponent's average .216). Jack Combs won an amazing 31 games and finished with a 1.50 ERA. Harry McIntyre won 25 games and Ed Walsh 21. Infielder Harry Davis paced the offense with 104 RBIs and 15 homers... Nice... Al Orth (26-11) and Rube Waddell (24-16) had the best pitching arms for Kayenta ... Here are the NL standings: Code:
Team W L PCT GB Pyt.Rec Diff Home Away XInn 1Run M# Streak Last10 Cottonwood 92 70 .568 - 98-64 -6 44-37 48-33 6-10 27-26 * W1 8-2 Kayenta 87 75 .537 5.0 80-82 7 42-39 45-36 11-9 34-32 - L3 6-4 Flagstaff 82 80 .506 10.0 89-73 -7 40-41 42-39 8-13 21-30 - L1 4-6 Prescott 79 83 .488 13.0 84-78 -5 42-39 37-44 10-17 26-37 - W2 4-6 Grand Canyon 78 84 .481 14.0 73-89 5 40-41 38-43 13-10 35-31 - L3 5-5 Jerome 78 84 .481 14.0 75-87 3 39-42 39-42 17-5 34-27 - W3 5-5 Payson 78 84 .481 14.0 79-83 -1 34-47 44-37 9-8 31-27 - L1 3-7 Sedona 74 88 .457 18.0 71-91 3 37-44 37-44 10-12 33-31 - W1 5-5 Southern League You couldn't have asked for a more dramatic ending to the SL. Six teams finished within eight games of each other at the top. Only Tucson and Bisbee were really out of it over the last month or so... Despite a three-game losing streak to end the season, Yuma held on to win the top spot. Not sure why they played one less game than Tempe, I'll just say it was a rain out issue ... Poor Carefree. The Blues had fans raving in their first season in the Southern League and got hot at the end, winning seven of the last 10 games. But the Blues lost to Tempe on the final day of the regular season 3-2 to lose the wildcard spot to the Sun Devils. So close. Tempe RF Irv Waldron was definitely the hero in the decisive final game. The 32-year-old designated hitter went 4-for-4, hitting a home run in his last at-bat in the bottom of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie. It was only his seventh homer of the season but propelled the Sun Devils into the playoffs! Waldron, an 11th round pick in the initial AZL draft in 1901, ended up being named Batter of the Month for September. (Gosh, I love this game and the storylines it produces)... As for Yuma, the Prisoners were led by pitcher Addie Joss (28-9 record), a 28-year-old standout. Eight guys had 45 or more RBIs for Yuma... Here are the complete SL standings for 1908: Code:

1908 Playoffs - Divisional Series
![]() ![]() Northern League Cottonwood Monsoon sweeps Kayenta Turquoise Warriors, 4-0 Kayenta's first trip to the post-season ended in disappointment. But the Warriors played the Monsoon much closer than the final series score might indicate. Kayenta just struggled at the plate in clutch situations. Game One went to Cottonwood 2-1. Jack Coombs pitched a four-hitter for the Monsoon. Harry McInytre then tossed another four-hitter for Cottonwood in Game Two, a 2-0 win for the 'Soon. Game Three was the backbreaker. Kayenta had a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth, and pitcher Nap Rucker had secured the first two outs. But Bris "The Human Eyeball" Lord got aboard and then young catcher Bruno Block ripped a triple to bring Lord home for a 4-4 tie. Heartbreak! The Monsoon went up 5-4 in the 10th, but the Warriors responded with a run-tying play as well, but they couldn't push one more run across to win it then. Finally, in the top of the 12th Cottonwood scored again on a home run from 1B Harry "Jasper" Davis. Davis had been 1-for-12 in the playoff series up to that point. The 6-5 defeat in 12 innings put Kayenta down 3-0 in the series, a much tough hole to climb out of mentally than 2-1. Cottonwood won the finale 2-1, getting runs in the fifth and sixth innings... ![]() ![]() Southern League Yuma Prisoners defeat Tempe Sun Devils, 4-2 Tempe won the opener quite convincingly, 6-0. The Devils pounded Yuma's top starter Addie Joss with 12 hits. But Yuma responded with three straight victories, beating Tempe 6-3 in Game Two, 9-1 in Game Three and 3-1 in Game Four. Joss was a completely different pitcher in Game Four, coming back with a two-hitter to shut down the Devils. Tempe stayed alive with a Game Five win, 4-2 -- pounding out 14 hits. But Yuma ended the series with a 3-2 decision in Game Six. The Prisoners only needed five hits to win it, leading off with a homer from SS Freddy Parent. RF Chick Stahl had a run-scoring triple as well... So, the match-up is set for the eighth-annual Cactus Champions Cup series: Cottonwood vs. Yuma...

1908 Cactus Champions Cup
The Cottonwood Monsoon defeats the Yuma Prisoners, 4-1 ![]() Alas, Yuma comes up short in its bid for a first-ever Cactus Champions Cup. Cottonwood, meanwhile, gets its first after coming up short in the Division Series a few times. Cottonwood set the tone by winning the first two games in Yuma, a 3-1 decision and a 5-1 decision. The 'Soon got good pitching from Jack Coombs and Harry McIntyre. The Prisoners bounced back to win the first game in Cottonwood, 5-4. Yuma scored three runs in the eighth to avoid a 3-0 deficit. But the Monsoon won the next two contests to close the series, 5-1 and 4-3. Coombs and McIntyre again were the pitching winners. Yuma's Addie Joss, the AZL's Top Hurler in both 1906 and 1907 (and will be again in '08 - a little preview for you) lost both of his decisions in the Cactus Cup. That moved his playoff record to an unsightly 1-3. Joss was 28-9 for the season... Past Champions 1901 Payson, beat Nogales 4 to 2 1902 Nogales, beat Grand Canyon 4 to 1 1903 Prescott, beat Jerome 4 to 2 1904 Prescott, beat Grand Canyon 4 to 2 1905 Bisbee, beat Flagstaff 4 to 3 1906 Prescott, beat Grand Canyon 4 to 3 1907 Flagstaff, beat Tombstone 4 to 3 1908 Cottonwood, beat Yuma 4 to 1 The Southern League leads the Cactus Cup series 5-3, though Prescott is now an NL team ...

1908 Award Winners
Top Hurler Awards Cottonwood right-hander Jack Coombs was untouchable much of the year for the eventual AZL champs. His work paid off in the form of a 31-10 record and an ERA of 1.50. In 372 Innings he was able to strike out 110 batters. Jack pitched 8 shutouts and 38 complete games. He was 1st in the Northern in ERA and 1st in wins... The Southern Top Hurler Award winner was Yuma right-hander Addie Joss, whose team lost to Cottonwood in the Cactus Champions Cup. Despite a lackluster performance in the post-season, Joss earned the Top Hurler honor. His ERA of 2.04 helped him to a 28-9 record this year. He struck out 125 and walked 52 in 339 innings. Addie pitched 5 shutouts and 34 complete games. He was 4th in the Southern in ERA and 1st in wins. Joss wins the award for the 3rd time in his 6-year career. Big Stick Awards The Big Stick Award in the Northern was handed to Flagstaff's leftfielder Sam Crawford (gee, what a surprise) This year Crawford drove in 84 and scored 97 runs while batting .328 with 11 bombs. He was 2nd in the Northern in batting, 6th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI. Crawford wins the award for an amazing 7th time in his 8-year career. Nogales' leftfielder Sherry Magee had a fabulous season as well, no doubt about it. The Southern shared this opinion and named the 24 year old the Big Stick Award winner. His season featured a batting average of .282 (166 hits in 588 AB), 33 doubles, 14 triples and 10 bombs. Magee collected 98 RBI and 82 runs as well. He was 4th in the Southern in batting and 1st in RBI! Rookie of the Year Biff Schlitzer, a pitcher for Prescott, put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 23 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! Biff has a record of 17-18 this season, with an ERA of 2.75. In 295 Innings he was able to strike out 88 batters. He had 6 complete games and 3 shutouts. Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. Phoenix's Rube Manning smiled as he was named the Southern Rookie of the Year winner. This season Manning compiled an ERA of 3.16, going 16-19 in 36 starts. He fanned 105 while giving up 324 hits in 324.2 innings. He had 33 complete games and one shutout. Field General Awards Northern League Pitcher: Jean Dubuc (SED) Catcher: Tom Needham (JER) First Base: John Anderson (SED) Second Base: Johnny Evers (GCA) Third Base: Mike Mccormick (KAY) Shortstop: Otto Krueger (FLG) Leftfield: Matty Mcintyre (JER) Centerfield: Doc Gessler (PRE) Rightfield: Johnny Bates (CTW) Southern League Pitcher: Doc White (CAR) Catcher: Lew Drill (CAR) First Base: Dan Mcgann (NOG) Second Base: Harry Arndt (BIS) Third Base: Harry Lord (YUM) Shortstop: Freddy Parent (YUM) Leftfield: Charlie Jones (TUC) Centerfield: Roy Thomas (CAR) Rightfield: Fred Ketchum (TUC) News and Notes from 1908 Grand Canyon pitcher Frank Smith, who pitched a no-hitter and won a Top Hurler award in 1904, missed much of this season due to injury ... Cottonwood 1B Harry Davis hit a "descending" cycle, cranking a home run, triple, double and single -- in that order -- in an early-season contest against Kayenta ... 40-year-old "Big Ed" Delahanty likely saw his career come to an end. The five-time All-Star and two-time winner of the Big Stick Award was released by Phoenix in late July. He has 1,105 career hits and a .305 career batting average ... Tombstone had the top hitting and pitching prospect in the AZL at season's end. Pitcher Del Mason, though, has yet to move up from Triple A to the Big Club in four seasons. The 24-year-old went 6-4 in Triple A in 1908. Wonder how they got those rankings for prospects? Potential only? So far, he seems to below expectations at this point ... The top field player is 3B George Perring, who is still in Double A (hitting .266) Cottonwood's Ed Walsh and Tucson's George McQuillen had no-hitters this season... That brings the total in eight years to 15, with only one perfect game. Trivia question: Who pitched the perfect game?

1908 Winter Meetings
The 1908 Winter Meetings were postponed for two weeks while the high country dealt with some of the biggest snowstorms Northern Arizona had ever seen. Feet after feet of snow fell, even in the lower elevations. Some of the saloons in Jerome even closed down for a time. Customers wanted their liquor but couldn't get to the bars! "If this stuff doesn't melt soon, we may have to delay the start of the baseball season," Flagstaff owners said. "If there is even a season at all..." There was major concern over the status of commissioner Phinieus "Doc" Victory, the brainchild of the Arizona League. He had disappeared for a couple of months, and no one could seem to find him. There were several pressing matters surrounding the league, and Victory had gone AWOL. "Dude, is he dead?" one newspaper reporter asked. No, not dead. He reappeared as the snows melted and called the Winter Meetings to order in Cottonwood. "I was just taking a little sabatical," Victory said. "You know, I'm pretty wiped out from running the league and traveling all over this great territory. My wife was pretty sick of me working all the time, so I decided to get away for a little while. Plus, I got a bit enchanted with this new game out there, called Basket Ball. It's quite addicting. "Anyways, I'm back now. I might not be able to take on quite as much as before since I'm getting up there in years, but the Arizona League and my service as commissioner will go on. I'm turning some of the leg work of the league over to my sons... "Now, let's pray the rest of this snow melts and we can play some baseball..."

Author's Note: Just to let folks know, this dynasty may crawl compared with others, due to some time constraints I have. And I am currently doing some basketball dynasty stuff right now while that sport is in season... But I'm not giving up on the AZL ... There are too many players I want to see play yet!

Yeah, some of the franchises don't have a clue, it seems ... the draft has always been heavily weighted toward pitchers ...

1909 Season Wrap-Up Northern League After the snows melted, the race for the Northern League regular season pennant proved fierce between three teams. Cottonwood, Grand Canyon adn Payson all traded places in the top spot throughout the summer and into September. Even though Cottonwood won its last two games, a 6-4 finish down the stretch left the defending AZL champs out of the post-season. The River Runners and Longhorns shared the NL crown with 91-71 records. Frank Chance and Johnny Evers led a robust Grand Canyon hitting attack, batting .285 and .287 respectively. Pitcher Orval Overall went 23-7 with a 1.87 ERA. Cy Seymour doubled a team-record 33 times. Rookie CF Tris Speaker — who ironically got his first-ever AZL hit off of Overall — sparked the Longhorns with a .294 batting average in his debut season. The All-Star player had 57 RBI and six homers... Lefty pitchers Noodles Hahn and Slim Sallee both had 20-win seasons for the 'Horns... Code:

The Yuma Prisoners ran away with things, posting a league best 98-64 record. The Prisoners were magnificent in one-run games, winning 40 of 58. Wow. No one had a spectacular season hitting-wise for Yuma. But the team's average was among the best in the league at .238. Addie Joss went 24-14 from the mound. Case Patten won 21 games, Doc Newton won 18 and Bill Grahame won 17. Bisbee slipped into the No. 2 spot, 10 games back. The Prospectors had seven guys with 45 or more RBIs, led by Dick Hoblitzel's< |
