Just a reminder -- if there is ever any player that readers want more information on, just let me know. I'll go look it up. I guess this will become more of an issue when we get deeper into the league.

For some reason, I can't wait to see where guys like Babe Ruth, Pete Rose, Ted Williams, Reggie Jackson and other greats end up ...

I'll probably do some extra recaps after the 10th season, posting things like career leaders, records and highlights for each franchise, plus each year's winner of awards and the like ...

1909-10 Winter Meetings

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon proves a great spot to hold the latest Winter Meetings. And the River Runners pull out all the stops in their first turn as hosts.

The place is brimming with owners, players and scores of baseball fans, all in awe of the natural wonder just outside their cabin windows (or just outside their tents depending on how lucky you were getting housing). The first few days very little business is done. It's basically an extended vacation. The only grumblings come over the lack of alcohol, especially by the folks in Jerome, who are used to much more flowing than is available.

AZL commissioner Phinieus "Doc" Victory even holds a "race" on day two of the meetings down to the Colorado River -- then surprises everyone by being among the top finishers to the bottom, despite the fact he has a pegleg.

"Hey, I know a few shortcuts," Victory said after his amazing feat. "Plus, going down isn't the hard part. It's coming back up."

Victory didn't finish among the leaders in that department. After camping out by the river for a night, Victory still finished ahead of more than half of the participants in his little competition back up the trail. "Death Valley Jim" Scott, a 21-year-old pitcher from Grand Canyon, completed the race back up in first place. "Hey I do this all the time in the off-season," Scott said. "It's good training."

There wasn't a lot of hard news coming out of this year's Meetings once the fun wrapped up. Most of the talk centered around celebrating the upcoming milestone 10th year of the Arizona League. Commissioner Victory praised league owners, players and fans for making the league viable and reported that most franchises were doing well financially.

Here are a few of the other main headlines:

• Began organizing the league's minor league structure. "We want each franchise to have three feeder teams," Victory said. "The top level feeder squads we'll call Triple A, followed by Double A and Single A." Ultimately franchises wanted to have their minor league affiliates close by whenever possible, in case a quick call-up was needed. This also would be a good test to see which cities and towns would be viable candidates for expansion should the AZL move beyond 16 teams (or other teams want to relocate).

• Victory and other AZL leaders received overtures from the fledgling Nevada-Utah Baseball Association about a possible merger. That league was a Single A pro league at best, and sometimes games never even made it past a few innings because fights would break out among players, fans, etc. Victory wanted nothing to do with those guys and basically shewed them all away. "We are the Arizona League," he said. "That's A-R-I-Z-O-N-A in case you boys can't spell so well."

• Special recognition was given to Jerome's Otto Hess for throwing TWO no-hitters during the 1909 season. The double no-no's came within a few weeks of each other in June. Secretly Victory wishes there were fewer no-hitters (too many cheapens the feat) and studies ways to make this possible.

• Carefree Blues officials report that things are going well for their franchise since leaving Lake Havasu. Carefree 2B Bobby Vaughn is listed as the best non-pitching prospect in the league going into the new season.

• Forgot to report earlier than the Northern League All-Stars won the annual All-Star game 6-5. Wahoo Sam Crawford of Flagstaff was the MVP, hitting a run-scoring double and bringing home another score with a sac fly. Tris Speaker of Payson had two hits in his All-Star debut. Jerome's Nap Lojoie - the first-ever draft pick in the AZL - batted second and scored two runs. Charlie Smith of Payson got the pitching win, with Cottonwood's Jack Flater picking up the save.

• The following players official retired from the AZL, it was announced at the Winter Meetings:

• Pitcher Red Donahue was a first-round pick by Sedona in 1901, the league's first year. He had a 65-48 W-L record as a pitcher, earning a trip to one all-star game.
• Pitcher Chick Fraser won 93 games but lost 123
• RF Buck Freeman had a pretty solid career in Tombstone, earning All-Star spots four times and being named the 1906 Big Stick Award winner for the SL. He hit for the cycle in 1902 and had five hits three other times.
• Another Tombstone retiree, 1B John Ganzel, was a three-time Field General Award winner.
• OF Billy Lush never had a post-season at-bat but still won three AZL titles with Prescott.
Ed "Battleship" Gremminger of Flagstaff drove in six runs in a game against Payson.
• Pitcher Bill Bernhard of Tempe won 155 games and had the lowest ERA in the SL in 1902 and 1908.
Deacon Phillippe, a pitcher, had a pretty distinguished career. The third overall pick from Prescott in 1901, went to five All-Star games, won two division titles with the Antelopes and was the 1903 Top Hurler. He finished with a 160-101 record, winning 29 games one season to lead the league... He leaves the league 11th on the career list for wins.

1910 Season Recap

Northern League
The Grand Canyon River Runners barely miss out on their chance to defend their Arizona League title. The 'Runners lost their last two games, and the Prescott Antelops won their last two. Grand Canyon's Orval Overall, who earned the win in last season's Game Seven, got shelled in the regular season finale, a 5-0 loss to Jerome. Ouch.

Pitcher "Colby Jack" Coombs paces Cottonwood, winning an amazing 30 games, against only nine losses. He was just one win shy of breaking his NL record of 31 W's set in 1908 ... He's virtually untouchable in games, posting an ERA of 1.59 (and seven shutouts). He was Player of the Game in eight of his last 10 starts. His only loss during the span, however, came to Prescott, the team the Monsoon will face in the playoffs.

Jim Jackson paced the Cottonwood hitting attack with 24 home runs and 89 RBIs. Jackson was a 15th round pick back in 1901 (232nd overall) but was among the NL leaders in hitting this season...

Prescott, winners of three AZL titles already, motors along behind the fine plate work of Danny Green (.284 average, 67 RBIs) and Germany Schaefer (.270, 18 HRs, 70 RBIs)... Pitcher Happy Townsend has a pleasing 25-13 record with a 1.82 ERA...

Here are the final standings ...

Code:
Team W	L	PCT	GB Pyt.Rec	Diff Home	Away	XInn	1Run	M#	Streak	Last10
Cottonwood	94	68	.580	-	94-68	0 50-31	44-37	9-6	33-25	*	W6	7-3
Prescott 88	74	.543	6.0	92-70	-4 40-41	48-33	7-7	35-30	-	W2	6-4
Grand Canyon	87	75	.537	7.0	83-79	4 45-36	42-39	15-5	35-26	-	L2	6-4
Jerome 86	76	.531	8.0	85-77	1 48-33	38-43	6-8	29-31	-	W1	6-4
Payson 86	76	.531	8.0	88-74	-2 42-39	44-37	9-6	29-34	-	W2	3-7
Flagstaff	79	83	.488	15.0	83-79	-4 42-39	37-44	9-13	26-30	-	L3	5-5
Kayenta 66	96	.407	28.0	62-100	4 35-46	31-50	6-13	19-29	-	L2	4-6

Southern League
The Yuma Prisoners also won't be going back to the playoffs, after finishing a distant sixth in the standings. Yikes ... The new power appears to be the Nogales Apaches, who won an impressive 102 games (I like that there is a player named Chief Myers on the roster of this club. He's a 36-year-old catcher).

Dan McGann is the man for Nogales this season, batting .278 with 13 HRs and 84 RBIs. The first baseman is 39-years-old and still stole 12 bases. Nice! I love this game ... LF Sherry Magee is the other offensive leader, posting some nice stats (99 RBIs, .246 average). Pitcher Babe Adams sets a new Southern League record with 32 wins. (His ERA of 1.73 last season also was an SL record).

The other playoff challenger in the Southern will be the Tucson Saguaros, who finally appear to have turned their franchise around. Tucson had never been higher than fourth in the SL. Five times the Saguaros finished dead last in the standings. Two other times they were sixth. There is much rejoicing in the Old Pueblo this season!

The presence of Ty Cobb has certainly helped. He batted .297 this season with two HRs and 61 RBIs. He stole more than 30 bases. Young catcher Tex Erwin battled .288 with 46 RBIs. This was a good team all-around, with the best batting average in the league (.246). Pitching ERA was third-best, led by Bill Burns (24 wins) and Ralph Glaze (22 wins)...

This should be an interesting series with two "new" powers going at it with a spot in the Cactus Champions Cup at stake... The NL might have the advantage since both Prescott and Cottonwood are pretty experienced in the post-season...

The SL Standings:

Code:
Team W	L	PCT	GB Pyt.Rec	Diff Home	Away	XInn	1Run	M#	Streak	Last10

1910 Divisional Playoffs

Northern League

Prescott Antelopes dry up Monsoon, 4-2

The 'Lopes will got a shot at an unprecidented fourth Arizona League title thanks to this series win. Of course, Prescott's other three championships came while members of the Southern League.

The biggest turning point in the series came in Game Five. Cottonwood had won two of the first three contests, 3-2 and 5-2. Prescott tied things up with a 7-3 decision in Game Four (Happy Townsend outdueled 32-game winner Jack Coombs from the hill in that one).

But then in Game Five, Prescott's Lew Brockett recorded the first ever Arizona League post-season NO-HITTER! The Antelopes played error-free behind him. Brockett, nicknamed "King" after this game, walked three with five strikeouts. Most of the Monsoon players popped out on a somewhat windy day. More amazing still was this fact — this was Brockett's second NO-NO of the season. He also blanked Jerome's bats in a mid-June game (close again to a perfect game).

Cottonwood's "Big Ed" Walsh could have been a star in Game Five as well. He tossed a four-hitter, but that was obviously overshadowed by Brockett's career performance. Prescott scored both of its runs in the first inning, then hung on for a thrilling victory. The 'Lopes won 3-2 in Game Six to clinch a return trip to the Arizona League's most elite series.

Game Four winner Happy Townsend returned to the hill and pitched a complete game win in Game Six. Gene Demontreville hit what would be the game-winning RBI double in the top of the ninth, with the score tied 2-2.

[Note: In real life, Brockett was just 13-14 from the mound in four seasons with the Yanks]

Southern League

Nogales ends Tucson's dream season, 4-2

The Saguaros, who needed to beat Tombstone in a special one-game playoff just to make the post-season, fell behind 2-0 in the Divisional series and never could fully recover.

Tucson won Game Three by a 3-2 score, needing a home run from the appropriately named Frank "Home Run" Baker to keep the contest alive in the bottom of the ninth. The Saguaros scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th.

But Nogales took a 3-1 series lead in Game Four. Tucson took the next game but the Apaches closed things out with a 4-2 decision in Game Six. Sherry Magee had a home run for Nogales and 3B John "Mugsy" McGraw batted home two runs as part of a three-run fifth frame. Tucson got two runs back in the seventh but couldn't anything else going against Nogales' ace Johnny Lush, who earned the win in this decisive game.

Will Prescott win its fourth AZL title or will Nogales ascend to the throne for the second time in its history (the Apaches won the 1902 crown)? Stay tuned for the 10th Cactus Champions Cup...

1910 Cactus Champions Cup

Prescott wins fourth Arizona League title, topping Nogales

The Antelopes had a relatively easy time notching their fourth AZL crown, rolling to a 4-1 series win over the Apaches.

Nogales fans will forever look back at Game One as the big turning point in the series. The Apaches had a 3-2 lead going into the top of the ninth, needing just three more outs from pitcher Babe Adams to lock up the home victory. But then 2B Amby McConnell — a Field General Award winner the year before — botched a routine grounder. Prescott scored the tying run, then shelled Adams for four runs in the top of the 10th to win going away, 7-3. OF Danny Green had a big run-scoring double, then 1B Tim Jordan pouned out a two-run triple.

From there, even though Nogales took Game Two by 3-0 score, things seemed to go downhill for the Apaches. Game Three was tied 0-0 going into the bottom of the ninth, with each pitcher throwing a two-hitter. Then Prescott's Jimmy Walsh slammed a two-run, walkoff homer that sailed 410 feet. Nogales was effectively finished after that.

Prescott won Game Four 6-3, building a 5-0 lead in the early innings. Tim Jordan had another big hit in this one, a two-run homer. In Game Five, Happy Townsend pitched a three-hit gem, giving the Antelopes the title with a 2-0 triumph.

Let the spirits flow from Whisky Row. The 'Lopes are kings of the Arizona League once again...

1910 Award Winners

Top Hurler Awards
Jack Coombs was named the Northern Top Hurler Award winner. Cottonwood's right-hander put up fabulous numbers this year. In 39 starts this year Jack struck out 127 batters in 351.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.59, his record 30-9. Jack pitched 7 shutouts and 38 complete games. He was 1st in the Northern in ERA and 1st in wins. Coombs wins the award for the 2nd time in his 4-year career.

Despite losing twice in the Cactus Champions Cup series to Prescott, Nogales pitcher Babe Adams smiled as he was named the Southern Top Hurler Award winner. This season Adams compiled an ERA of 2.25, going 32-8 in 40 starts. He fanned 112 while giving up 242 hits in 360 innings. He had 40 complete games and 7 shutouts. He was 5th in the Southern in ERA and 1st in wins.

Big Stick Awards
A familiar name returned to claim the Northern League award this season, Flagstaff leftfielder Sam Crawford. The 30-year-old hit 14 longballs this year while batting .308. He added 20 doubles, along with 74 runs scored. He was 2nd in the Northern in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI. Crawford wins the award for an amazing 8th time in his 10-year career.

The Big Stick Award in the Southern was handed to Nogales' leftfielder Sherry Magee (a nice year for Nogales despite the loss in the Cup). Sherry was 142 for 578 (.246) this season, hitting 14 taters and driving in 99 runs. He scored 76 runs on his own. He was 1st in the Southern in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns. Magee wins the award for the 2nd time in his 6-year career.

Rookie of the Year Awards
Getting an award is a nice way to start a career. Prescott's Russ Ford smiled as he was named the Northern Rookie of the Year winner. His ERA of 2.40 helped him to a 19-19 record this year. He struck out 129 and walked 82 in 352.2 innings. He had 37 complete games and 2 shutouts.

Yuma's pitcher Frank Lange worked hard to reach the big leagues. His work paid off as the Southern named him the Rookie of the Year winner! Frank had a record of 18-17 this season, with an ERA of 3.20. In 320.1 Innings he was able to strike out 145 batters. Frank has pitched 4 shutouts and 33 complete games. He was 10th in the Southern in wins.

1910 News & Notes

April 11, 1910 (4-11-10) will go down in memory as one of the greatest days in the history of Arizona baseball. Both Orval Overall (Grand Canyon) and Otto Hess (Nogales) pitched NO-HITTERS. Overall's no-no came against the eventual AZL champs, Prescott. Hess' no-hitter came against Bisbee. Ironically, neither hurler was named Pitcher of the Week...

[Author's note: I'm a bit frustrated by the high number of no-hitters in my league and am working on ways to decrease them a bit. But at the same point, I think there is a bit too much offense in the league for a dead-ball era. What to do?!?]

• Both teams that advanced to the championship game made some nice trades. Nogales beefed up its defense by getting SS Joe Tinker. He was a multi-year Field General Award winner. Prescott picked up pitcher Happy Townsend (by way of Tempe and Tucson), who ended up winning three games in the post-season (including the three-hit gem in Game Five of the Cactus Champions Cup) and finished with 25 wins total...

• Jerome LF Matty McIntyre had a field day against Kayenta on May 10, bashing two home runs and finishing with seven RBIs... Sammy Strang of Bisbee and Danny Shay of Phoenix both had five hits in games this season.

• Here is the list of no-hitters thrown this season (again, too many). All hail guys named Lew! Fred Beebe also had two no-hitters this year

4/11/1910, Orval Overall (GCA), 4 K, 5 BB
4/11/1910, Otto Hess (NOG), 4 K, 2 BB
5/12/1910, Lew Moren (JER), 4 K, 2 BB
5/18/1910, Fred Beebe (FLG), 7 K, 0 BB
6/15/1910, Lew Brockett (PRE), 7 K, 1 BB
6/26/1910, Harry Krause (SED), 2 K, 1 BB
9/21/1910, Fred Beebe (FLG), 7 K, 3 BB
10/12/1910, Lew Brockett (PRE), 5 K, 3 BB

• Below are this year's All-Stars. The SL standouts beat the NL team 4-2, with Otto Hess of Nogales getting the pitching win (nice year for him except for not winning the AZL title). Tucson shortstop Simon Nicholls stroked the game-winning home run with one on in the eighth.

1910 Winter Meetings

The Winter Meetings following the 10th year of the Arizona League returned to Whisky Row, a fitting place considering Prescott has cemented itself as the team of the decade with a fourth championship.

There was very little business done outside of celebrating 10 years of baseball in Arizona. The spirits flowed freely, and the only real buzz centered around rumors that Commissioner Doc Victory had designs on stepping down from his post to take over as owner/manager of one of the teams. The buzz had him assuming command of the beleaguered Kayenta franchise (since he so badly wanted baseball to work up in Navajo country) or possibly working a takeover in his hometown of Cottonwood.

"Humbug," Victory retorted when pressed on the matter. "You never know what tomorrow may bring but for now, I'm perfectly content as the chief of the Arizona League." Off the record, Victory did express concern about Kayenta's lack of competitiveness most seasons, and Sedona's as well.

Another buzz was created when a contingent from the eastern Arizona town of Show Low arrived at the meetings. They made no secret about the fact that they wanted a franchise in their fair town. "I mean the league has teams in Prescott, Cottonwood, Jerome, Sedona and Flagstaff all slammed on top of each other, and yet the White Mountains only have one team for the whole region," one town official said. "That's ridiculous."

Doc Victory was impressed with the passion of the group and listened intently to their ideas. He was glad Payson officials had the foresight to put its Triple A farm team in Show Low. He would be very interested to see how folks in Show Low treated their minor league squad.

"If fans in your area show the interest that you say they have, then I would think in due time Show Low could be a prime spot for an Arizona League team," Victory told the group. "Plus, I can't wait to see what kind of nickname you could come up with."

That got them excited. And of course created a bit of a buzz about whether the AZL would expand or if another franchise would be on the move sometime soon.

The Show Low folks were right. There were a bunch of teams concentrated in one area around the Verde Valley/Prescott Valley and Flagstaff region. But baseball was huge there, and Victory was from there, helping to drum up all the support. Save for maybe Sedona, none of the teams was having problems drawing a following. Sedona was more into artsy-fartsy stuff, and the owner had expressed concerns about outdated facilities, but the Scorpions still were doing OK overall...

Yeah, I actually lived in Cottonwood for four years. Sedona was a beautiful place but not much for sports (except for maybe mountain biking).

I was a sports reporter for the Cottonwood paper during that time, and I remember the Sedona High football coach getting miffed that every year he'd have fewer home games than everyone else because they'd always take the football field and high school grounds for an arts festival one weekend in October ... That Friday, his game would have to be moved to the opposite site ...
