Ok, I'm off for a week due to Winter Break (one of the few fringe benefits of being a teacher....the pay sure ain't worth it ), so I'll be updating this again in my free time.

Sorry for the extended hiatus.

1911 is the year the league finally went live, so we'll hopefully have more input from the GM's (cough, cough), and I expect to match the current season soon.

More to come tonight.....

Looking back I like this draft, Howie Guendler took a contact hit right after the draft but got a big boost and is now playing pretty well in the majors.

Nothing really happened with Carpenter and he is now in the FL but Scoot Wicker will probably he a solid RP very soon.

I guess this is where I got Jimmy Semisch. What a character that guy is, something tells me he is going to be a Senator sooner rather then later.

1911 MAJOR EVENTS
  • January 3 - In London, in what becomes known as the Siege of Sidney Street, the Metropolitan Police and the Scots Guards engage in a shootout with a criminal gang of Latvian anarchists held up in a building in the East End.
  • January 3 - At Laughery club house, near Rising Sun, Indiana, the National Baseball Commission adopts a rule that bars World Series winners from playing post-season exhibition games.
  • February 14 - At the National League's annual meeting, the Giants and Phils get an okay for new home uniforms: white flannel with a fine stripe, an innovation that predates the famed Yankee pinstripes by four years.
  • March 17 - Plumbers at work on the drain pipes at Washington's ballpark start a fire that burns down the grandstand. Since the water has been shut off, fireman can do nothing. Stands will be rebuilt to play the home opener on schedule.
  • March 25 - Fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City - 145 dead
  • March 29 - United States Army formally adopts the M1911 pistol as its standard sidearm, thus giving the gun its 1911 designation
  • April 1 - NL president Tom Lynch reveals he had asked all umpires to produce certificates as to their eyesight; tests showed all have perfect vision.
  • April 13 - With Cleveland leading the Browns 3–1 in the 9th inning at Cleveland's League Park, the game is stopped because of a severe storm. Many fans are bruised by hailstones.
  • April 14 - Cleveland's great pitcher A.A. Nolan dies unexpectedly from tubercular meningitis.
  • April 24 - NL President Lynch orders his umpires to stop catchers, especially St. Louis' D.J. Hoegerstayer, from verbally attacking batters.
  • May 8 - Mexican rebel Pancho Villa launches an attack against government troops in Ciudad Juarez without Madero's permission
  • May 12 - Against the Yankees at Bennett Park, Larry "Lobo" Abercrombie scores a run from 1st on a short single to right, scores from 2B on a wild pitch, then doubles home two runs in the 7th to tie the game. When New York catcher Monty Eason vehemently argues the call at the plate, the rest of the infield gathers, leaving Lobo untended at 2B. With no time out called, Abercrombie strolls to third base, and then ambles in to observe the continuing argument. When he spots an opening in the circle of players, he quickly slides in with the go-ahead run. The Senators win, 6–5.
  • May 15 - Ring Lardner writes, "They are using a new ball this year. It's livelier and that means more hitting, and more hitting means longer games, and that's the devil. It appears to be impossible to finish a game in less than two hours."
  • May 30 - The first Indianapolis 500-mile auto race is run. The winner is Ray Harroun in the Marmon 'Wasp'.
  • June 24 - In a Reds win in Cincinnati, Cards backstop D.J. Hoegerstayer is called out on strikes by umpire Bill Klem to end the game. When D.J. argues too long over the call, Klem belts him. An embarrassed NL president Lynch will fine the arbiter $50 for the punch.
  • June 29 - Browns' lefty phenom John Fritz falls victim to a career ending injury in a game against Washington. Fritz complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Marcus Cato, then suddenly collapsed. Doctors examining him after the game diagnose a torn ligament in his elbow.
  • July 11 - The Federal Express of the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad, carrying the St. Louis Cardinals to Boston, plunges down an 18-foot embankment outside Bridgeport, CT, killing 14 passengers. The team's Pullmans were originally just behind the baggage coaches near the front. When noise prevented the players from sleeping, manager Earl Arnell requested the car be changed. The day coach that replaced the players' car was crushed and splintered. The players help remove bodies and rescue the injured, then board a special train to Boston, where the day's game is postponed. The railroad pays each player $25 for his rescue work and for lost belongings.
  • July 19 - With the score tied at 3-3 in the 6th inning, Vernon 3b (Pacific Coast League), Christopher Yearby executes an unassisted triple play against Los Angeles. With men on 1B and 2B, he makes a spectacular diving catch of a short fly by batter Babe Salisbury, touches 2B, and runs to 1B to retire both runners.
  • July 24 - Hiram Bingham rediscovers Machu Picchu.
  • July 28 - Charley "Victory" Faust shows up at the Giants' hotel in St. Louis asking for a tryout. Manager Richard Rum observes the "pitcher," who obviously is no player, and carries him on the team as an unofficial "mascot," and good luck charm. But the Giants lose to the Cards today, 5–2, with the help of five errors.
  • August 5 - Cubs manager Henry Shaver suspends Skipper Quincy and fines him $150 for indifferent play. He is reinstated the next day.
  • September 5 - Giants 3b Hiram Webber's season is ended when he is beaned by Handsome Jack Hartung in a game against the Braves.. Webber's cheekbone is severely fractured, causing him frequent debilitating sinus headaches for the rest of his life.
  • September 20 - The liner RMS Olympic, sister ship to the RMS Titanic, collides with Royal Navy cruiser HMS Hawke outside Southampton, England.
  • September 25 - John C. Joy, brother of Philadelphia great Jim Joy, dies on the mound of an aneurysm during a game played in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • September 25 - Groundbreaking for Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts begins
  • September 29 - Larry Abercrombie is fined $100 by the National Commission for playing a Sunday game with a semipro club in New York. Lobo is supposedly convalescing from an injury that he suffered against the Red Sox on August 13th.
  • October 5 - The National Commission sells motion picture rights to the World Series for $3,500. When the players demand a share of it, the Commission cancels the deal.
  • October 24 - Orville Wright remains in the air 9 minutes and 45 seconds in a glider at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina setting a new world record
  • December 14 - Roald Amundsen's expedition reaches the South Pole

Edwards and Luck win PITCHER OF THE YEAR
Caroll Edwards will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the AMERICAN LEAGUE to name St. Louis (A)'s southpaw the PITCHER OF THE YEAR winner of 1911. Caroll has a record of 25-8 this season, with an ERA of 1.88. In 340.1 Innings he was able to strike out 203 batters. He has 19 complete games and 4 shutouts. He's 1st in the AMERICAN LEAGUE in ERA and 1st in wins! Edwards wins the award for the 8th time in his 9-year career.

The 1911 NATIONAL LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE YEAR winner is from Chicago (N) this year. Avery Luck put together impressive numbers on the mound this season as well. Opposing players hit .217 against Avery this season. While posting an ERA of 2.36 he went 23-15 in 43 starts, fanning 242 and walking 102 hitters. Avery has pitched 7 shutouts and 36 complete games. He's 2nd in the NATIONAL LEAGUE in ERA and 3rd in wins! Luck wins the award for the 3rd time in his 10-year career.

Abercrombie and Shifman earn BATTER OF THE YEAR honors
The 1911 AMERICAN LEAGUE BATTER OF THE YEAR winner has been announced. It's Washington's leftfielder Larry Abercrombie who really had a great offensive year. While compiling an on base percentage of .432, Larry hit .380 and slugged .489. He has collected 70 runs batted in this year. He's 1st in the AMERICAN LEAGUE in batting!

Boston (N)'s centerfielder Milton Shifman had a fabulous season as well, no doubt about it. The NATIONAL LEAGUE shared this opinion and names the 32 year old the BATTER OF THE YEAR winner! This year Shifman drove in 85 and scored 88 runs while batting .365 with one tater. He's 1st in the NATIONAL LEAGUE in batting and 5th in RBI! Shifman wins the award for the 3rd time in his 10-year career.

Sikorsky and Mulligrew receive ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Nick Sikorsky will never forget his first full season. The AMERICAN LEAGUE was convinced that Washington's pitcher, 25 years old, should be the ROOKIE OF THE YEAR winner of 1911. Nick has a record of 22-15 this season, with an ERA of 3.51. In 343.2 Innings he was able to strike out 187 batters. Nick has pitched 2 shutouts and 17 complete games. He's 5th in the AMERICAN LEAGUE in wins!

The NATIONAL LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR winner was announced today as well, with Pittsburgh's pitcher Fenton Mulligrew earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. Fenton has a record of 13-9 this season, with an ERA of 3.61. In 249.1 Innings he was able to strike out 137 batters.
