Unfortunately, their ace Jurgen Verherrsch went down for the season on August 5th and doubt swirled among the fans. Management made a last minute deal with the New York Giants for starter Tim Brightlighter. Two weeks later, he went down with an injury as well. He could be back in time for one of the final games of the series, but it isn't guaranteed. This series in entirely up for grabs. PREDICTION: Cincinnati in 7 |

1918 WORLD SERIES
9/5/1918 – GAME 1 ATHLETICS 3 - REDS 4 At first it appeared that the upstart A's had completely blindsided the defending champs as the held on to a 3-0 lead for 7 innings, but the Reds finally got to Jimmy Hardy in the 8th. Opposing pitcher Alonzo Crockett started the rally with a single, and 3 hits and an error later, the game was tied. That seemed to take the wind out of the A's sails as Henry Barca knocked in the speedy Harold "Zippy" Zapp with a long RBI single in the 9th to take Game 1. 9/6/1918 – GAME 2 ATHLETICS 4 - REDS 3 Yet again, the Athletics got out to an early lead and the Reds rallied back, but this time the boys from Philly managed to hold back the crimson tide in the 9th. Dean Wooster led the way with 2 RBI. 9/8/1918 - GAME 3 REDS 7 - ATHLETICS 4 This time it was the Reds who got out to an early 3-0 and the Athletics who tied it up with a 3 run rally in the 8th. Unfortunately for the young guns, Cincinnati struck back in the top of the 9th with 4 runs to put the game out of reach. Jack Cuddy knocked in 2 with a pinch-hit single, and Tyson Knapp followed up with a 2 run double. Reds lead 2-1. 9/9/1918 - GAME 4 REDS 2 - ATHLETICS 4 Eddie Deal knocked in 2 in the top of 1st with a double off the wall, but that was it for the Reds as Jimmy Hardy closed the door the rest of the way. The Athletics clawed their way bit by bit, eventually pulling ahead on a 2 run double by Denholm Stevenson to tie the series at 2 games apiece. 9/10/1918 - GAME 5 REDS 5 - ATHLETICS 3 In a game that featured a 21 minute rain delay and the ejection of Philly manager Bill Horton for one of his legendary tirades, Marty Unger gets one back against Steven Killian with the help of Federal league import Eckard Burlingame's 2 run shot in the 3rd 9/12/1918 – GAME 6 ATHLETICS 5 - REDS 9 Tim Brightlighter is finally deemed healthy enough to start, and although he was a bit shaky in his performance, the Reds' bats more than provided enough run support with 5 players contributing 2 hits, knocking Jim Pinkus out after 6 innings and leading Cincy to their second consecutive crown. Could this be the makings of a dynasty? 1918 WORLD CHAMPS – CINCINNATI REDS 2nd Championship SERIES MVP: Eckard Burlingame - .417, 1 3b, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 7 Runs |

Washington's right-hander put up fabulous numbers this year which earned him the highest award a pitcher can receive. His ERA of 2.53 helped him to a 21-12 record this year. He struck out 122 and walked 82 in 299.1 innings. Charley has pitched 6 shutouts and 27 complete games. He's 5th in the AMERICAN LEAGUE in ERA and 1st in wins! Bartlett wins the award for the 2nd time in his 4-year career. Alonzo Crockett will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the NATIONAL LEAGUE to name Cincinnati's right-hander the PITCHER OF THE YEAR winner of 1918. In 36 starts this year Alonzo struck out 143 batters in 317 innings of work. His ERA is 2.27, his record 25-5. He has 28 complete games and 5 shutouts. He's 3rd in the NATIONAL LEAGUE in ERA and 1st in wins! BATTERS OF THE YEAR are Coltrane and Barca. It was a day to remember for Philadelphia (A)'s Julius Coltrane, who won the AMERICAN LEAGUE BATTER OF THE YEAR today. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. His season features a batting average of .315 (144 hits in 457 AB), 25 doubles, 15 triples and one bomb. Coltrane collected 51 RBI and 75 runs as well. He's 4th in the AMERICAN LEAGUE in batting! Cincinnati's first baseman Henry Barca had a fabulous season as well, no doubt about it. The NATIONAL LEAGUE shared this opinion and names the 25 year old the BATTER OF THE YEAR winner! Barca has hit 4 longballs this year while batting .334. He adds 27 doubles, along with 90 runs scored. He's 3rd in the NATIONAL LEAGUE in batting, 5th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Barca wins the award for the 2nd time in his 5-year career. Slocum (NYA) and Push (PIT) win ROOKIE OF THE YEAR The AMERICAN LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR winner was announced today, with New York (A)'s pitcher Monty Slocum earning the trophy for putting up the best numbers among rookies in his league. Opposing players hit .241 against Monty this season. While posting an ERA of 2.81 he went 13-4 in 21 starts, fanning 86 and walking 29 hitters. Monty has pitched 2 shutouts and 12 complete games. Joe Push was named the NATIONAL LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR winner today. Pittsburgh's pitcher put up pretty good numbers for a rookie this year. This 24 year old kid will probably have a long and successful career! Joe has a record of 7-7 this season, with an ERA of 3.03. In 148.2 Innings he was able to strike out 57 batters. When I say "Red Sox" I mean the team, not the owner/GM, when I mention "that other Boston team" in Batty, I SPECIFICALLY mean "YOU" suck, the teams not bad.

Don't count out the impact of postseason experience that Cincy has in droves. This series should be quite close, especially since they've changed it to 9 games. If it goes to 9, Verherrsch will get the ball...and you know how he is in clutch situations. PREDICTION: Cincinnati in 9 |

See, just like the "dumb a$$" he is, I never (until NOW!!) quetioned his ability as commish (just pencil puching and key pressing anyways, my cat could do it) only his ability to do a job that required actual thinking, such as managing a team!!!!

1919 WORLD SERIES
10/4/1919 – GAME 1 REDS 2 - YANKEES 4 With Jurgen Verherrsch on the shelf until Game 3, Tim Brightlighter got the start, but he just didn't have his best stuff, giving up 11 hits and 4 runs. Yankees ace, Monty Slocum, helped own cause with 2 RBI. Waylon Campbell led all batters with 3 hits. The Reds are just glad that the series now is best of 9. 10/5/1919 – GAME 2 REDS 2 - YANKEES 3 Dick Twitty started things off for the Yankees with a 2 run bomb in the 1st on a hanging curve off of Alonzo Crockett. The Reds scored onre in the 6th and one more in the 9th to tie it up, but it didn't last as Lawrence Kauffman gave up the game-winning run to Aloysius "Chum Bucket" O'Reilly, putting New York 2 game to zip. 10/7/1919 - GAME 3 YANKEES 2 - REDS 5 Leave it up to Jurgen Verherrsch to stop the bleeding. He didn't have his best stuff, giving up 10 hits, but he spread it out enough to allow the defending champs to score 5 runs, knocking in 2 himself. No help was to be found from Eddie Deal or Henry Barca, who have yet to notch a hit in the first 3 games. 10/8/1919 - GAME 4 YANKEES 7 - REDS 1 Brightlighter and Slocum faced off again, and the Reds starter was ineffective for the second straight start. He gave up 4 runs in the 3rd and a 3 run moonshot to Yankees backstop Dan Curtin to put the game completely out of reach. On the other mound, Slocum was his usual stellar self, allowing only 5 hits. 10/9/1919 - GAME 5 REDS 1 - YANKEES 4 Dick Twitty got on base 5 times in 5 at-bats and Jefferson Nance knocked in 2 runs to put the Yankees up 4 games to 1. Cincy fans are apoplectic. 10/11/1919 – GAME 6 REDS 12 - YANKEES 4 Henry Barca led the way with 4 hits and 3 RBI as the Reds' bats woke up with a vengeance for 17 hits off of Eldon Sheldon. Verherrsch was a bit off his game, giving up 4 runs, but it was more than enough to pull Cincy back to 4 games to 2. 10/12/1919 – GAME 7 YANKEES 8 - REDS 2, 16 innings In the best game of the series, the Yanks and Reds locked horns in an epic battle. Brightlighter and Slocum met for the 3rd time and both were on their game. Cincy pulled ahead 1-0, but Clyde Rockworth squeaked a single through the infield and, after getting knocked over to 2nd by Thomas Griffin, legged out a long hit by Dick Twitty to send the game to extras. The game remained knotted for the next 4 innings until Henry Wing knocked in a run in the top of the 14th. Eddie Deal got his 1st RBI of the series with a sac fly in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up yet again. Matt Kidder came in for the Reds in the top of 15 for the first time in the postseason, but he couldn't shake the rust off as he gave up 3 quick runs. "Chum Bucket" O'Reilly put all doubt out of the fans' minds as he capped off the series with a 3 run shot, putting New York up by 6 and clinching their first crown. 1919 WORLD CHAMPS – NEW YORK YANKEES 1st Championship SERIES MVP: Monty Slocum - 2-0, 0.69 ERA, 26 IP, 12 Hits, 2 BB, 14 K |
