Restoring Yankee Greatness

The New York Yankees.

That name is one of the first people think of when they think of baseball. Greats such as Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio, Mantle, Maris, Ford, Berra, and Jeter have all roamed Yankee Stadium in pinstripes.

The Yankees are synonymous with winning. The Bronx Bombers have made 46 trips to the postseason, won 39 pennants and 26 World Series.

The Yankees have come across a World Series drought in recent seasons. They last won the World Series in 2000 and last made a World Series in 2003. Although, most teams wouldn't consider this a "drought", it is simply unacceptable in Yankee land. Heres the story of what could have happened with the 2006 Yankees(and possibly beyond)

Yankees Fire Cashman!!!!

11/26/2005

Ted Wiliford
Staff Writer

Standing at a podium in front of a multitude of reporters, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner announced that General Manager Brian Cashman had been fired. Cashman seemed to be shocked by the announcement stating " I knew we didn't have a great season, but we did pretty well. I didn't expect to be let go." Steinbrenner did not name Cashman's successor at the conference but reports are that a few candidates are in the running to take over the posistion. A few people rumored to be up for the job were form Astros GM Gary Hunsicker, A's GM Billy Beane, and a wildcard candidate, David Jenkins.

Yankees Announce New GM, Many Shocked

12/02/2005

Ted Wiliford
Staff Writer

Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner announced Brian Cashman's successor today. The name that Steinbrenner called was certainly not one that most experts expected. Most baseball gurus predicted that former Houston Astros GM Gary Hunsicker would take over the spot. That was far from what happened. Steinbrenner grinned widely as he announced that David Jenkins, a relative unknown, would be taking over the posistion. Jenkins is a 24 year old who has spent the last two years working with the Texas Rangers as an assistant to the assistant GM. Jenkins graduated from the University of Houston in 2003 with a degree in Sports Marketing. He certainly has a tough task at hand. The Yankees have the highest payroll in all of baseball at 198 million. The closest team to them payroll wise is the Boston Red Sox who sport a 123 million dollar payroll. Thats a difference of 75 million dollars. The pressure on Jenkins will be immense. If this team does not succeed, he will join Brian Cashman at the unemployment line. Steinbrenner said " David is youthful, has great ideas and will inject new life into this club, I am going to step back and let him work to make the deals and signings needed to bring this club back to a world series. Anything short of the trophy will be a failure." I believe I speak for all of Yankee nation when I say " Good luck David Jenkins" We hope you bring us a championship, but we won't hold our breathes.

Yankees deal Sheffield
12/12/2005

Ted Wiliford
Staff Writer

Making his presence felt early, GM David Jenkins sent star RF Gary Sheffield and LHP Mike Myers to the Houston Astros. Sheffield has, what most scouts consider, the fastest hands in the game. Last season Sheffield his 34 HR's and drove in 123 runs. That is alot of offense to make up for. In return, the Yankees recieved Jason Lane and LHP Trever Miller. Lane is 29(8 years younger than Sheffield) and managed to hit 26 HR's last season while driving in 78 runs. Miller posted a 4.06 ERA last season in 62 games. Who comes out on top of this deal? More than likely, the Astros. Sheffield is a pull hitter now playing in a stadium with a short porch. Expect 40 plus homers. Good job Jenkins. I can smell the World Series already.

Baseball Fever in the Air

3/27/2006

Ted Wiliford
Staff Writer

Baseball is back! The Mets and Yankees begin spring training games on April 2nd. Both are expected to have a few battles at different posistions. The Yankees could have the most compelling one. With Jason Giambi's skill at first diminishing, he clearly should be moved to DH. The only problem with him at DH is that means beloved Yankee hero ,Bernie Williams, would be forced to sit the bench. Giambi would DH, with Spiezio at 1st, Matsui in LF, Damon in CF and Lane in RF. Time will tell what happens but most Yankee fans would love to see Bernie in there in what could be his final season.

vs.

A's 8
Yankees 6 (in eleven)

W. J. Duchsherer
L A. Small

Moose struggled giving up 6 runs in 6 innings and also 10 hits. Cano hit a grand slam and drove in the tying run in the ninth to send it to extra innings. Scott Spiezio went 0-4 with 1 BB in his Yankee debut. If he continues to be an out sucker, he wont get much playing time. He did save a few bad throws.

PoG: Robinson Cano( 3-5 1HR 5 RBI's)

Damon Injured, Yankees hopeful

4/8/06

Ted Wiliford
Staff Writer

During last nights win, Yankee center fielder and leadoff hitter, Johnny Damon, suffered an injury while legging out a double. Doctors say he has an inflamed anterior cruciate ligament. He will be forced to miss up to 6 weeks. The Yankees are hopeful he will have a healthy recovery and return to the top of the order. For now, the Yankees have called up veteran utility man Damian Rolls. OF Bubba Crosby and OF Noah Hall are expected to share time in CF while Damon is sidelined.
