Re-Do: 1885 Preview

The FINAL "re-do" as I'm now back to where I should be, so we can get this thing rolling again
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Sporting Life, Philadelphia, PA, April 15, 1885:

UNION ASSOC. IS GONE, BUT LEGACY LIVES ON
Horace V. Leonard's attempt at a third major professional base ball loop, the Union Association, died after just one season of operation. Leonard's loop was ill-conceived and badly run, but it has left a lasting impression on the sport. For one thing, the Union's championship club, the St. Louis Maroons (owned by Mr. Leonard himself) have moved into the National League, a coup of large proportions. This came about because the fierce financial competition of the 1884 season (caused by the Union's very existence) forced the National's Cleveland club to cease operations. But the Union's impact is felt beyond the National League. The American Association expanded by four clubs for the '84 season in an (ill-fated) attempt to stiffen the competition against the Union usurpers. The result of this twelve-team experiment were not good. Three of the quartet of new clubs are gone as quickly as they appeared, with only Brooklyn, bolstered by a large pool of rabid base ball followers on which to draw, making it to the starting line for 1885. Indianapolis, Toledo and Washington are all extinct, and Association founding member Columbus has also gone the way of the dodo. As for the players, those who defected to the Union chasing freedom from the Reserve Clause, are now (mostly) back in the fold, while a handful of Union standouts have found new homes on Association or League clubs for '85. So the impact of Leonard's Folly continues to be felt despite that ill-conceived venture's none-too-premature expiration earlier this year.

DETROIT FACES NEW CHALLENGES IN LEAGUE CHASE
The Detroit club, known popularly known as the Wolverines, face a new set of challengers for their crown as they seek a second-straight League pennant. The age-old foes from Boston, Providence and Chicago will be back, and likely as formidable as ever, but joining them are improved clubs in New York and Philadelphia. The Giants (nee Gothams) are bolstered by the sleight-of-hand performed with their Association counterparts which delivered Phinneas Harvey and Tim Edmonds, while Philadelphia added a stand-out pitcher (Ron Blasingame) and short stop (Victor Sprayberry) and Providence features one of the most under-rated players in the National League in centerfielder Bob Dove, who hit .340 in 1883.

VICTOR SPRAYBERRY

WEAKENED METS LEAVE VACUUM ATOP ASSOCIATION
With the 1884 champions from New York considerably weakened by the shift of their two top players to the National's New York Giants, the top spot in the American Association appears to be up for grabs. Among the favorites to supplant the Metropolitans are the Browns of St. Louis and Reds of Cincinnati, two top clubs from a year ago. Another possible challenge could come from the Association's newest club, the Brooklyn nine, which fattened up on the leavings of the several clubs which were forced to fold after the war with the Union Association - the National Cleveland club chief among them. Brooklyn added Cleveland's top pitcher (Rod Hollis), short stop (Ken Fitzwater), and the 'Duke of the Wabash' himself, center fielder Dave Hafner. The Browns are very strong at the bat with their phenomenal young catcher Shane Day ably supported by a pair of outfielders (Ed Burd and Ward Smith) while their pitching is bolstered by Justin Williamson, who was outstanding (40-7, 2.79 ERA) for the Minneapolis Club in the Northwestern League a year ago. Cincinnati added a pitcher in George Husting who was outstanding for a pair of American Association clubs a year ago, posting a 1.40 earned run mark and also will feature an outstanding freshman outfielder in Otto Evans, a local product who shone in the Northwestern League.

BASE BALL IN DIXIE
A brand-new professional loop will begin play this spring in the deep South. The Southern League will feature clubs in Georgia (Atlanta, Augusta, Macon and Columbus), Tennessee (Chattanooga, Memphis and Nashville) and Alabama (Birmingham). The league's President, Ephraim Hubbard, promises quality play and indeed, some former American Association players have gone South to give the Southern loop a try. Birmingham's Paris Kulp, a former Pittsburgh Allegheny, looks to be one of the top batsmen in the new loop, though Chattanooga's Dave Blakeslee, a former member of the Cleveland Blues, is also a solid performer. Among the pitchers, Atlanta's Asa Struve was among the American Association's top hurlers a year ago, and can be counted upon for a strong campaign in 1885.

ASA STRUVE

NEW WESTERN LEAGUE RISES OUT OF NORTHWESTERN'S ASHES
Nowhere was the vacuum left by the disappearance of the Union Association felt as strongly as in the west. With clubs in Kansas City and St. Paul, the Union moved into, and then abandoned the territories of the also-dissolved Northwestern League. A group of Western magnates has put together a new loop, dubbed the Western League, which features club in such former 'big league' cities as Kansas City, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Toledo and Milwaukee. They also have clubs in Keokuk, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska. The most intriguing player to land in the Western loop is the well-traveled Solomon Cuffey. After being driven out of the American Association by racism, Cuffey finished up last season in St. Paul with the Union club there and now will toil in the former National League city of Cleveland with the Forest City club. The versatile Cuffey can play catcher or outfielder and though it's unclear where he will position himself afield, it is clear that his skills with the bat should put him among the Western League's top batsmen.

SOLOMON CUFFEY

EMPIRE STATE CLUBS FORM NEW CIRCUIT
The nation's most populous state, New York, has formed a league of its own for the 1885 season. The New York State League will feature six clubs competing in the large state's northern regions. The clubs will play in former League bastion Syracuse as well as Rochester, Utica, Binghamton, Oswego and the capital city of Albany. Like the Western League, the New York circuit also features a club giving a chance to a player who would otherwise be excluded due to the color of his skin. The Utica Pent-Ups feature a second baseman named Dan Heywood, who just may be one of the best keystone players in all of base ball.

DAN HEYWOOD

INTERSTATE ASSOC. BECOMES EASTERN LEAGUE
The Interstate Association has become the Eastern League as the organization seeks to increase professionalism throughout its ranks and leave the mess that was the 1884 season behind. The Eastern League features clubs in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, the nation's capital and two clubs in Virginia (Norfolk and Richmond) with Washington, Wilmington and Richmond all having been the homes of top-level clubs a year ago. The Jersey City club enters the season as the favorites, mainly on the strong right arm of their top pitcher, Bill Betts. Betts, a Canadian citizen, is the son of an escaped slave and has already sworn not to travel with his club when they head to Richmond and Norfolk this season.

June 1885 Report

The Sporting Life, Philadelphia, PA, June 1, 1885:

GIANTS TOWER OVER LEAGUE COMPETITION
The New York Giants are off to the best start in the team's (albeit short) history, with 11 victories in their first 12 games. The Giants possess a potent lineup anchored by off-season acquisition Phinneas Harvey, whose presence has impacted the rest of the team - both Bill McLaughlin and catcher Charlie Selders are hitting .404 thus far and keystone player Howard Cusack is contributing a .351 mark. Not to be outdone, the pitching combo of Josiah LeGrew and Harvey's former Metropolitan mate Tim Edmonds have both been outstanding as well, with Edmonds posting a 7-1 mark and 1.63 earned run average while LeGrew is 4-0 with a 2.25 earned run average.

DESPITE LOSS OF HARVEY/EDMONDS, METS CONTINUE TO PACE THE ASSOC.
When Josiah Danner completed the sleight of hand that saw the two best players on the Association champion New York Metropolitans move across to the National League's New York Giants, everyone expected the collapse of the Metropolitan club. Apparently someone forgot to inform the Metropolitans of this, as the club is as strong as ever and is again leading the Association in victories in the early going. The presence of the O'Leary brothers is a large reason for the continued excellence of the club. Daniel, Patrick and Francis are all thriving despite the absence of Phinneas Harvey and the pitching tandem of Dennis Schmidt and Daniel Rutledge has looked solid as well. The season is still young, and the Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Brooklyn clubs are all good clubs who could challenge the Mets, but so far everything is sunny on both sides of the Polo Grounds.

STARS SHINING IN EMPIRE STATE LOOP
The city of Syracuse has a long and proud base ball heritage and the city's current club has lived up to their 'Stars' name. The Syracuse club is the class of the New York State League thus far, winning 12 of their first 16 contests to hold an early edge over clubs from Binghamton, Oswego and Utica. The Rochester club, expected to be a solid contender, have thus far been a sore disappointment, as has the Albany nine. Syracuse is led by Jesse Krause, a former National League player with the Cleveland Blues club who elected to return to his native New York State rather than play with the Pittsburgh Allegheny club, which made him an offer this past winter. Krause has hit over .500 thus far - a performance that almost certainly can not be maintained - turning the New York State League on its collective ear.

RICHMOND CLUB TOPPING EASTERN LOOP
Granted, the Richmond Virginias Club carries a sizeable portion of the roster of the Richmond Club which finished the 1884 campaign as a member of the American Association, but no one expected the Association's doormats to dominate in their new setting - the Eastern League. With Gat Schilling performing at a ridiculous pace, the Richmond nine has been almost unbeatable thus far, winning 16 of 18 contests. But the going has not been without controversy as several Richmond players refused to take the field for a contest against the Jersey City club in New Jersey, due to the presence on the latter club of Negro pitcher Bill Betts. The Richmond team did eventually field a team in that contest, which they won.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE GAINING FOLLOWING IN DIXIE
The newly formed Southern League of Base Ball is proving to be a success in Dixie Land. The quality of the base ball is somewhat ragged, but the qualities of the sport are proving an attraction to Southern crowds, much as they have been in the North for the past thirty or more years. Thus far, it appears that the Memphis and Columbus (Georgia) clubs are the class of the new loop, though most of the eight clubs are competitive and the contests are close. Whether there will be enough people attending the games to make the League a viable success remains to be seen as several clubs - including the aforementioned Columbus club - are struggling financially. Rick Dekoning, formerly of the St. Paul club in the Northwestern League and now playing for the Chattanooga Lookouts, is leading the Southern loop in hitting and believes the circuit will prove successful. "The folks here are becoming more and more knowledgeable about the game and have recently begun to demonstrate that knowledge with some fine jockeying of the opposing club," he says with a smile.

STRUGGLING WESTERN LOOP SURVIVES FIRST MONTH
The Western League has struggled to find a following despite the presence of clubs in former Union and American Association locales. In fact, one of the Union Association castoffs, the Kansas City Cowboys Club, is the class of the Western loop thus far this season. Winners of 21 of 29 contests, the Cowboys appear to be far stronger than any of their six competitors. Sean Childress, who played in the National League with Buffalo for several seasons before signing with the Union Association a year ago, finds Kansas City to his liking and it shows in his play. "This beats Buffalo eight ways to Sunday," is his opinion, though he is mum on rumours that it is his salary that is contributing to the dire financial straits of the Kansas City club.

August 1885 Report

The Sporting Life, Philadelphia, PA, August 1, 1885:

NO DOMINANCE IN LEAGUE COMPETITION
Though the New York Giants continue to lead the pennant race in the National League, a close look at the standing table shows that the League is full of competitive teams and no one is clearly dominant. The Giants possess 37 victories, but four other clubs also have 30 or more wins and the Boston Beaneaters have 29. Only the Chicago and Philadelphia clubs have struggled to win. That Chicago has dropped so far is the season's biggest surprise - a former power in the League, the White Stockings are 20-38 for the season. Their hitting has been average, but their pitching has not been up to snuff for Walker Rhoades' club, and the former standout hurler turned team owner is again hearing calls for him to return to the field. "That's not going to happen," Rhoades admits. "The fellows will have to reverse this team's fortunes themselves." The St. Louis Maroons, who dominated the Union Association a year ago, are in the second spot, but have been up and down all season long and it's unclear whether they are as good as their record would indicate - though they do have William Hill, one of the League's best hitters. Buffalo, Detroit and Providence are all bunched together with St. Louis just behind New York.

LEGENDARY PITMAN UNHAPPY WITH REDS' PLAY THUS FAR
Rube Pitman, the English-born star of the Cincinnati Reds, is unhappy with his team's play. Now 42 years of age, Pitman has shown no real signs of slowing down, as his .304 average this season would indicate. But the Reds - expected by many to be among the Association's best clubs this year - are mired in last place with just 20 victories. This is a club that is not bereft of talent: in addition to Pitman they have Otto Evans and Mahan O'Faolan two accomplished hitters, but the pitching tandem of Jeff Hall and Alton Welch has been mediocre. The lackluster play of the hurlers has some in the Queen City clamoring for the return of O'Faolan to pitching, something the Irishman has done as recently as last season when he was 9-13 with a 1.86 earned run mark.

UTICA USURPS TOP SPOT IN EMPIRE LOOP
After a swift start to the 1885 season, the Syracuse Stars raced to an early lead in the New York State League, but now find themselves looking up at the Utica Pent-Ups. Utica has been led by superb second baseman Dan Heywood, who would undoubtedly be in the National League were that organization more progressive in its view on race. As it is, Heywood is hitting well over .400, and it is undoubtedly a shame that he will likely not receive a shot at the National League - or possibly even the American Association. In other NY State news, it was a rough month of July as the Albany club disbanded on July 28 and a club from Elmira entered the loop on July 6 only to disband a mere ten days (and eight games) later.

TROUBLED EASTERN LEAGUE SOLDIERS ON
The Eastern League, like the New York State League (and the Western League as well - more on that later), is having a difficult season. The Wilmington Club moved to Atlantic City on June 19, but dissolved a mere five days later after playing three games in New Jersey. Jersey City disbanded on June 23, leaving a 10-17 record behind them (as well as talented hurler Bill Betts). With other clubs - specifically Lancaster and Norfolk - also in financial peril, the future of this circuit is very much in doubt. On the field the Richmond club continues to dominate play, with 33 wins in 39 games, though Newark is right there. Newark is also pursuing Betts, the former Jersey City hurler, to bolster their chances of surpassing Richmond. Should that happen, the Newark Club would most likely become the favorite.

SOUHTERN LOOP INTACT - FOR NOW
The aftershocks of the Union Association are still being felt - even in the Deep South, where the Southern League has thus far managed to avoid losing any clubs, which the other so-called 'minor' loops have not been able to do. The Southern possesses a good pennant chase with the Columbus Stars currently atop the table with both Memphis and Augusta close behind. Troy Juniper has been raising eyebrows with his play for Columbus. The 24-year-old outfielder is the loop's top hitter and rumors are already strong that League and AA clubs have begun asking for a purchase price for the youngster. For now - he's in Columbus, and that's the main reason the Stars are atop the Southern League.

WESTERN LOOP FOLDS
The Western League gave it a game effort, but the member clubs struggled to pay their players and the loop gave up the ghost in late June. The Kansas City Cowboys were able to claim the championship in the truncated season, with a 29-9 record when the league shut its doors. Toledo and Omaha were competitive, Keokuk and Cleveland were mediocre and Milwaukee was the bottom feeder. Former Cowboy Sean Childress is already rumored to be heading to a National League club for the remainder of the season
after leading the Western Loop in hitting.

End of Season Report - 1885

The Sporting Life, Philadelphia, PA, November 15, 1885:

GIANTS HOLD OFF COMPETITION FOR LEAGUE PENNANT
The New York Giants are the champions of the National League for 1885. The Gotham nine held off spirited challenges from Buffalo, St. Louis, Providence and Boston. Bill McLaughlin (.332) and Phinneas Harvey (.339) were the batting leaders for the second-best offense in the National. Only the Buffalo Bison club was more effective at the bat than the Giants. The pitching was not completely overwhelming, finishing fourth-best in the loop in earned runs, yet both Tim Edmonds and 'Adirondack Joe' LeGrew were more than effective enough.

ALLEGHENIES CAPTURE ASSOCIATION FLAG
Though the New York Metropolitan Club led the race for the majority of the season, in the end it was the Pittsburgh nine who captured the pennant, winning 69 games to the 67 of the New Yorkers. As usual, pitching was a strong suit of the Pittsburghers, with Dane Wood winning 40 games to lead all pitchers in both the Association and National League and Dave Walker contributing a 29-13 record in support. And this club can hit as well: the Alleghenies had two hitters surpass the .300 mark in batting average - third baseman Rich Rigdon and center fielder Tim Holloman finishing second in both average and runs scored in the Association. The Alleghenies capped their successful season by surprisingly defeating the New York Giants in two out of three contests in the "World's Championship Series."

UTICA IS CHAMPION OF NEW YORK STATE LOOP
Dan Heywood hit .448 to help the Utica Pent-Up club win the New York State League championship with a .50-25 record. Heywood, a second-baseman, was easily the league's best player. The New York League saw a lot of runs as pitching was not up to the challenge of the hitters in the league. Utica also possessed the loop's top hurler as former Union Association pitcher Barney Streuli posted the league's best earned run average with a 3.13 mark.

EASTERN LEAGUE FINISHES TROUBLED SEASON
Four of the clubs which began the season did not finish, but the Eastern League did make it to the end of it's schedule and crowned a champion in Richmond's Virginia Club, which won one more contest than the Newark Domestics. Richmond featured Gat Schillings who hit .414 for the club, but also had Chad Aubuchon, the pitcher who in addition to posting a 23-3 record as a hurler also hit .414 himself and is expected to be a prized commodity for League and Association clubs this winter. With three other hitters all topping the .400 mark, it was no surprise that Richmond was such a powerful club. Newark bolstered its pitching by adding former Jersey City hurler Bill Betts, but although Betts posted a 14-4 record, he was not enough for Newark to pass Richmond in the standings.

TRIO OF DIXIE CLUBS FAIL TO COMPLETE SCHEDULE
Three of the Southern League's member clubs were forced to disband this season due to financial problems, casting a shadow on the loop's debut season. These problems will not prevent the League from competing again in 1886, though changes are obviously in the offing. Birmingham, Chattanooga and - surprisingly - Columbus all disbanded. The loss of Columbus was particularly surprising as that club represented the best performer of the circuit, and indeed, won more games than anyone else. Since the Stars were no longer a team in the league whne the schedule finished on September 17, the official championship was awarded to Memphis, which won the second-most games and had the league's top pitcher in Conrad Phillip who won 27 games with a 2.69 earned run average.

CLIFFORD 'SCOT' CAMPBELL

Not a great year for the Scot, as he hit just .243 and the question must be asked: at 35 is Campbell on the fade?

Successive seasons with an average below .230 are not a positive for the 30-year-old Feldbush and rumors abound that Boston is actively seeking another man for the keystone position.

JOHN MAHONEY

Mahoney had a down year - which was epidemic for the Boston club in a season which can not be considered anything other than a disappointment, but he still managed to score 140 runs as he walked an astounding 164 times.

McGregor hit .242 for the season as averages plummeted around both the National League and American Association. He's still a career .284 hitter and at 28, he's likely to have productive seasons in his future.

FRANK MCGRATH

McGrath continues to shine and is now considered to be among the best - if not THE best - outfielders in the game. Defensively superb, he also continues to produce at the bat, recording a .312 average, below his career mark of .335, but strong in a down year for hitters.

SOLOMON CUFFEY

Cuffey signed on to play in the ill-fated Western League and though the league folded in June, Cuffey had put together a solid couple of months, finishing with a .354 batting mark and returning to his regular position behind the plate. Where he'll land in 1886 remains to be seen.

WILLIAM HILL

Along with his St. Louis Maroons team mates, Hill moved into the National League (in his case it was BACK into the League) and though he didn't match the .372 he posted in both 1883 and '84, he did hit .303 for a surprisingly strong Maroon club.

HARRIS WENDELL

There's no easy way to say this - Harris Wendell is on his way out of the game. After seeing his development stall, the once-promising youngster found himself unable to break into the regular lineup for the Southern League's Macon Club after being unable to find a job in either the League or Association when the Cleveland Blues folded after the '84 season. It's unlikely Wendell will play in 1886, though he may give it another go.

PHINNEAS HARVEY

Harvey's star gained in brilliance in 1885. Despite a somewhat shady transfer from the New York Metropolitans to the National League's Gothams, Harvey's performance did not suffer in the least. He hit .339 and record 16 doubles and 12 triples and was a big reason the Gothams won the National League pennant.
