Green Bay @ Denver (5-8 defeat) Denver @ Nashville (1-2 defeat) Denver @ Nashville (8-3 victory) Denver @ Nashville (0-1 defeat) Denver @ Washington (10-3 victory) Denver @ Washington (7-6 victory) The Broncos fought through a mediocre week to end on a high note, winning the final two games of the week after going just 1-3 in the first four. Asbel Fuentez was the hitting star, going 11 for 24 with 2 doubles and 4 stolen bases. Lee Chappel went 5 for 19 with 2 HR and 6 walks. Mark Bakke went 7 for 21 with 5 RBI. Not surprisingly, Alexis Vazquez was named the American League Batter of the Month for his stupendous efforts in the month of April. Through the end of April, Vazquez had batted .430/.450/.860/1.310 with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 13 HR, 37 RBI, 25 runs scored, and 3 stolen bases. He was leading the league in batting average, HR, and RBI, and was second in OPS to teammate Lee Chappel. Additionally, he had failed to record at least one hit in only one game. Remembering the Hall of Famers: CF Micheal Bruce
Micheal Bruce:
If ever a player could be described as the "face" of a franchise, or even the "face" of an entire league, it would be Micheal Bruce. Bruce was the foundation of the early Pittsburgh dynasty, and played long enough to lead the next generation of players into battle, as well. Patrolling centerfield year after year for the Pirates, he just kept on piling up the numbers. He won no MVP awards, yet when it was all said and done, Bruce was the first player to achieve both 3,000 hits and 500 HR in a career. In 2022, his final season, he reached the top of the all time hit list, and ranked 3rd in homeruns. Though he lasted less than a year atop of the hit list, he still ranks 22nd all time. He remained in the top 25 of HR until 2056. He also sits at 22nd in RBI, 19th in doubles, tied for 3rd in triples, and 13th in runs scored. Bruce, of course, did not achieve just personal milestones. From 2003 to 2022, he helped Pittsburgh become the most dominant team of that era. The first World Series championship came in 2005, and then came a run of six consecutive championships from 2008 to 2013. He and the Pirates snagged their 8th and 9th championships in 2015 and 2019, and then Bruce went out on top, winning his and Pittsburgh's 10th championship in his final season in 2022. By then, only Bruce and reserve outfielder Michael Reed still remained from the end of Pittsburgh's 6 year run. Though Bruce still had life left in him, it was time for a new generation of players to make their mark, and he rode off into the sunset after that season. In addition to the tremendous career numbers that Bruce accumulated, his 14 All Star appearances are strong arguments to his case as the greatest centerfielder to ever play. Strangely, Bruce's postseason performances tended to be rather lackluster. Despite a career batting average of .299 and a career OPS of .915, Bruce batted just .249 with a .763 OPS in the playoffs. His best postseason performance, in 2014, actually came in a year that Pittsburgh didn't win the championship. Bruce's stats: Code:

Denver @ Washington (9-17 defeat) Denver @ Kansas City (10-3 victory) Denver @ Kansas City (10-1 victory) Denver @ Kansas City (8-7 victory) Memphis @ Denver (25-2 victory) Memphis @ Denver (7-3 victory) Memphis @ Denver (8-2 victory) After getting their heads beaten in by Washington to start the week, the Broncos rebounded to win six straight games, moving past Tucson into first place in the process. Along the way, they also bludgeoned Memphis into a bloody pulp. The game one rout was a 1-1 game until the bottom of the third inning, when Denver exploded for 10 runs, getting a two out grand slam from Lee Chappel. In that game, Tomas Sato delivered 6 hits, 4 RBI, and 5 runs scored. Russell Thomas had 4 hits and 3 runs scored. Ellis Bolling drove in 4 runs. Joseph Swayze collected 3 hits, 4 RBI, and 3 runs scored. For the week, Alexis Vazquez, Thomas, and Bolling were the most prominent hitting performers. Vazquez continued what is looking like a career year by going 12 for 26 with a double, three HR, 10 RBI, and 11 runs scored. Thomas went 14 for 25 with 2 doubles, 6 RBI, 8 runs scored, and 3 walks. Bolling went 8 for 22 with 3 doubles, 4 homeruns, and 17 runs batted in. On the pitching side of things, Kenny Pillsbury went 2-0 in 2 starts, with a 2.16 ERA, and a complete game, while Robert McNett threw a complete game, 5-hitter, with only 1 run allowed. Milestone Watch: Code:

Bryant 3294 A little update on this. At 38 years of age, Santiago Serrato is slowing down considerably, with only 3 hits so far in the month of May. Still, he only needs 14 more hits. As long as he doesn't get hurt, he should still be okay. Ricky Vega, on the other hand, is 40 years old and doesn't appear to be slowing down at all. He's having an excellent season, so far. Even so, reaching 4th place is about the absolute best he can hope for in terms of hits. Code:

# Career RBIs RBI 1 D. Homan 2255 2 R. Vega* 2238 3 F. Mira 2218 4 E. Quon 2214 As for the RBIs, Vega shouldn't have a problem reaching the top here. Barring injury, I could see him reaching Homan within two months, maybe even by the All Star break. Code:

The two questions now are: Can he reach McComas this season? Difficult, certainly, but I still think it is doable for him. Secondly, will he play another season and be able to pass up Jordan and Padgett? Playing at least another season, and maybe two more, seems quite likely. If he reaches McComas this season, he would then need 18 to tie Padgett. Again, difficult but doable.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: 1B Carlos Testa
Carlos Testa:
Carlos Testa was the very first player taken in an amateur draft, selected number one overall by Kansas City in 2004. He split his first professional season between AAA and the major leagues before becoming an everyday player in 2005. He rapidly developed into one of the more well-rounded 1B in the game, displaying both doubles and homerun power, an ability to hit for average, and excellent plate discipline. He even proved himself to be a slight threat on the basepaths. In 2007, he made the first of 10 All Star games. In 2012, he brought Atlanta to the brink of a championship with a tremendous postseason performance, that included a 3 HR game in Game Two of the World Series. Alas, his Braves blew a 3 games to 2 series lead, and lost in 7 games to Pittsburgh. Two years later, however, Testa would have his revenge. The Braves stopped Pittsburgh's run of championships at 6, knocking them off in 6 games in 2014. In Game One, Testa delivered a 2 out, three run homer in the 6th inning to erase a 2-1 deficit, and the Braves prevailed 6-2. In Game Four, with the Braves leading the series 2 games to 1, Testa broke a 1-1 tie in the 8th inning by hitting a two run double. Atlanta went on to win that game, 4-1. Testa would drive in 8 runs in the series. From 2018 to 2020, Atlanta lost three consecutive ALCS, all in 7 games. Testa performed relatively poorly in all three series. In 2021, Testa, then 38 years old, fought through multiple injuries during the season that caused him to miss nearly three months of the season. But he was healthy for the playoffs, and he batted .308 with a .987 OPS to help lead Atlanta to another World Series victory. To this day, Testa is 24th all time in doubles, 4th all time in walks, and 7th in runs scored. Testa's career stats: Code:

Remembering the Hall of Famers: 1B John Esquivel
John Esquivel:
With John Esquivel's induction to the Hall of Fame, an era of baseball came to a close. Esquivel would be the final player taken in the league's inaugural draft to become a Hall of Famer. Aside from that, Esquivel's primary claim to fame was an exceptional ability to hit for average. Although he developed solid power eventually, Esquivel's mark was made with his 2,966 career hits, his 8 200 hit seasons, and his .319 career batting average. Despite not being a prototypical 1B, Esquivel still managed to make 10 All Star teams in his career, including 7 in a row from 2012 to 2018. Esquivel's career stats: Code:

Nashville @ Denver (10-4 victory) Nashville @ Denver (9-8 victory) Denver @ Tucson (3-1 victory) Denver @ Tucson (7-6 victory) Denver @ Tucson (8-13 defeat) It was another good week for the Broncos. They swept a two game set from Nashville, and then took 2 of 3 from Tucson to open a 5 game lead in the division on the Diamondbacks. Currently, Denver has the best record in baseball at 30-11. Mark Bakke and Lee Chappel led the offensive charge for the Broncos. Bakke was 10 for 20 with 2 doubles, 1 homerun, 6 RBI, and 3 SB. Chappel was 9 for 19 with 4 doubles, 1 homerun, 4 RBI, 6 runs scored, and 6 walks. Christopher Kirk threw a complete game in the 3-1 victory against Tucson. There was one bit of bad news for the Broncos, however. George Buentello left his start on the 16th with pain in his elbow. It was diagnosed as a strained elbow ligament, and Buentello will be out for about two months. It's a tough break for a guy who had appeared to finally break through to the major leagues. In somewhat of a surprise decision, the Broncos will not promote veteran pitcher Larry Waltz, who was an effective starter down the stretch last season, but instead will call up gigantic 26 year old left-hander James Myatt. Myatt is a towering 6 feet, 11 inches, and has posted a 2.96 ERA in 8 AAA starts this season, with a 77/12 K/BB ratio in 54 2/3 IP. He has only 2 career major league appearances. Waltz, 33 years of age, has a 4.05 ERA in 7 starts at AAA, and 58/7 K/BB ratio in 40 innings pitched. Denver GM John Mounts said that he felt that Myatt would present a better matchup against the left-handed heavy lineup of Grand Rapids in the coming week, and that he wanted to reward the younger pitcher for his strong performance at AAA to date. "Obviously, if James struggles, Larry remains our second option while George is injured," he added. Milestone Watch: Hits: Code:

Remembering the Hall of Famers: 2B Tony Martinez
Tony Martinez:
If one was to put together a list of the most well-rounded ballplayers in league history, Tony Martinez would be a very good place to start. Martinez rose to prominence in the 20-teens, displaying fearsome HR power, an excellent ability to hit for average, tremendous patience at the plate, the occasional stolen base, and a top notch glove at second base. And he did it all for a consistent winner, Atlanta, who reached the postseason 8 times in his career, winning two World Series. His power was unquestioned: Three times he belted 50 or more homeruns, and three more times, he hit 40 or more. His ability to get hits was superb: he batted .302 for his career, and topped .300 in a season 10 times. His batting eye was among the best in the league at the time: He led the league in walks 4 times, and OBP, 5 times. Nine times did he draw 100 or more walks in a season. Not an elite base-stealer, he nonetheless managed to top 10 steals in a season seven times. He was an excellent defensive 2B, winning 4 Gold Glove awards in his career. After two lackluster postseason performances in 2008 and 2009, Martinez helped lead Atlanta to the World Series in 2012, where they lost in 7 games to Pittsburgh. Martinez batted .313 with 4 homeruns. Two years later, however, Atlanta beat Pittsburgh in the World Series, and Martinez blasted 5 homeruns during that postseason run. In 2021, Martinez would deliver 5 postseason extrabase hits en route to another championship victory. In 2022, Martinez would pass up Timothy Knight to become the all time HR leader. His stay at the top of the list would not last long, however, and he was passed up in 2024 by Cody Newport. Today, Martinez ranks tied for 22nd all time in homeruns, 20th in RBI, and 11th in walks. Remembering the Hall of Famers: SS Cody Newport
Cody Newport:
Cody Newport emerged as the hitting star of the great Memphis teams in the early history of the league, leading them to three straight World Series from 2008 to 2010. Unfortunately for Newport and the Grizzlies, they lost all three to Pittsburgh, and Newport didn't exactly light the world on fire with his postseason performances. Following the third defeat, Newport jumped ship for a Nashville team that had finished second in their division by 5 games in 2010. Newport proved to be the missing piece, and Nashville reached the World Series, only to lose in 7 games to Pittsburgh, though Newport did his best, hitting .357 with 7 XBH and 10 RBI Over the next few seasons, Nashville struggled, and even finished in last place on a couple of occasions. In 2015, however, they were rejuvenated, and finished with the best record in baseball at 101-61. Despite another superb performance from Newport, Nashville once again ran into Pittsburgh in the World Series and were defeated in heartbreaking fashion (In Game 7, they blew a 3-0 ninth inning lead, and then blew a 4-3 10th inning lead to lose 5-4 in 10 innings). Newport left Nashville following that defeat and joined Kansas City for the 2016 season. The Royals, losers of the 2013 World Series, had suffered through a couple of mediocre seasons since then. Newport would lead them back to the playoffs, and ultimately, to their first championship- a sweep against Los Angeles- though he did little in the postseason. He would never again play in a World Series, and, in fact, would only reach the postseason one more time in his career. Newport was a magnificent hitter, capable of banging out 40 doubles and 40 homers while batting well over .300 in any given year. He was also noted for being one of the most prolific whiffers to ever play. In 2022, he became just the second player to reach 3,000 career hits, and the second to reach 3,000 hits and 500 HR. In 2023, he passed up Micheal Bruce to become the all time hits leader, and a year later, became the all time HR leader, as well. His stay at the top of the HR chart, however, did not last even one season, as he was passed up by Hector Abad the following season. In 2027, Abad would pass up Newport on the hits list, as well. Newport held the top spot on the career doubles list until 2036. Today, Newport ranks 13th in hits, tied for 17th in HR, 13th in RBI, 10th in doubles, and 25th in runs scored. He is one of a small handful of players to rank so highly in that many categories. Newport's career stats: Code:

Green Bay @ Denver (5-4 victory) Green Bay @ Denver (6-3 victory) Green Bay @ Denver (10-11 defeat) Grand Rapids @ Denver (10-7 victory) Grand Rapids @ Denver (6-15 defeat) Grand Rapids @ Denver (2-3 defeat) Denver @ Knoxville (0-6 defeat) The Broncos were due for a bad week, but unexpectedly, it came mostly during a 5 game homestand. The week started off well enough, with two wins over the Packers, but Green Bay was able to prevent a sweep. After winning the first game against the Tigers, things unraveled for Denver. They were blown out in the second game and lost a nailbiter in the third game. Finally, they concluded the week with a shutout loss to the 79ers. Despite losing 4 of 7, however, the Broncos had plenty of solid performances during the week. Russell Thomas was 13 for 29 with a pair of doubles and homers each. Asbel Fuentez went 14 for 30 with 4 doubles, 1 homer, and 7 runs scored. Mark Bakke was 8 for 26 with a double and a homer and 7 runs batted in. Ellis Bolling was 6 for 22 with 3 doubles and 3 homeruns, 6 RBI, and 7 runs scored. Lee Chappel delivered 2 doubles, 3 HR, and 6 runs batted in. Joseph Swayze appeared to be starting one of his notorious hot streaks, with a 9 for 27, 2 double, 5 homer, 11 RBI performance. Milestone Watch: Hits: Code:

Remembering the Hall of Famers: SS Michael Mathew
Michael Mathew:
After winning the Rookie of the Year award in 2009, Michael Mathew emerged as one of the premiere homerun hitters in the National League for Harrisburg, leading the the league in homers 4 times, including three years in a row at one point, and finishing in the top 4 in nine consecutive years. He was also an exceptionally patient hitter, drawing 100 walks in a season six times, and leading the league four times. At the time of his retirement following the 2026 season, Mathew ranked 5th in HR, 10th in RBI, 8th in walks, and tied for 14th in runs scored. Although he would eventually fall out of the top 25 in all of these categories, he would remain on the HR list until as recently as the 2076 season. Mathew's career stats: Code:

Remembering the Hall of Famers: 3B Devin Stalter
Devin Stalter:
One year after Michael Mathew won the ROTY award, a young 3B for Rochester broke into the big leagues and, though still very raw, won the Rookie of the Year Award himself. His name was Devin Stalter. He quickly turned into a dangerous power threat, posting back to back 40 HR seasons, including a league leading 41 in 2013. Rochester was a good team in those days, but constantly in the shadow of Pittsburgh (In an era when only the division winners reached the postseason, many a good team missed the opportunity for immortality). After six seasons with Rochester, Stalter jumped ship to Los Angeles, a team that, while they tended to be up and down from year to year, had reached the World Series in 2016. He would play three seasons with the Dodgers, and they would make the playoffs each of those seasons, though they never reached the World Series. In 2020, Stalter left LA and signed with Portland, a perennial bottom feeder who hadn't had a winning season since 2005. It was a match made in heaven. Portland won 97 games and reached the World Series for the first time in franchise history, though they would get swept by Grand Rapids. Portland, led by Stalter, would continue to reach the postseason for each of the next several seasons, though would come up short in the NLCS time and time again. Until 2024. By this point, Stalter was no longer a leading player, but more of a supporting one. Instead, Portland was led by the best pitching in baseball; they had the league's best ERA by more than half a run. Still, it was Stalter who drove in 1 of the 2 runs in Portland's 2-0 victory over Grand Rapids in Game 4 of the World Series to even the series at 2 games apiece. And it was Stalter who drove in the only run in their 1-0 Game 5 victory. After a Game 6 laugher, Portland, and Devin Stalter had their first championship. Portland would reach the playoffs again in 2025, but that marked the end of Portland's run; they wouldn't make the playoffs again until 2037. Stalter's stats: Code:

Remembering the Hall of Famers: SP Robert Jordan
Robert Jordan:
The first two starting pitchers to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, John Caylor and Valentin Sojo, were inducted primarily for their contributions to the earliest history of the league. Though their career accomplishments pale in comparison to future Hall of Famers to some extent, they were considered pioneers of the game. While the third starting pitcher to be inducted could also be considered a pioneer of the game, that is not why Robert Jordan was inducted into the Hall. Robert Jordan was inducted because he was simply one of the greatest pitchers who ever lived. Drafted by Grand Rapids in 2006, Jordan spent several seasons toiling in the minor leagues, while also receiving a few cups of coffee in the big leagues each year. In 2010, Jordan moved into the major league rotation full time, winning 20 games, striking out 242 batters, and making the All Star team. In 2012, he set the AL single season record for strikeouts, finishing with 354. He started one game for the Tigers in the playoffs that season, and allowed only 2 runs in 7 innings, while striking out 13 batters. In 2013, he left Grand Rapids as a free agent and signed with Harrisburg. In July of that season, he tossed a no-hitter against San Diego- a team that won the West Division that season. In September of that season, he set the NL single season record for strikeouts, and finished with 330. In 2014, he won his first Cy Young Award. In 2015, he broke his own NL record for strikeouts, finishing with 346. In 2016, Jordan's career leaped into a whole new level. He won his second Cy Young Award, collected 27 wins, and broke his strikeout record yet again, finishing with 352. He led Harrisburg to the postseason, but was injured in his only start, and the Capitals fell to the Dodgers in the NLCS. In 2018, he broke his strikeout record once more, whiffing 360 batters. He also won his third Cy Young Award. In 2020, he signed with what was a very formidable Atlanta team. I have already mentioned two of the Hall of Famers on that team: Carlos Testa and Tony Martinez. Jordan was the third. Jordan went 27-1 for the Braves, who led all of baseball with 112 wins, and won his fourth Cy Young Award. Jordan completed all three of his playoff starts, but Atlanta was stunned in 7 games by Jordan's former team, Grand Rapids. 2021 would be Atlanta's year, and Jordan would get his revenge against Grand Rapids, striking out 15 batters in a playoff start against them. It was a brilliant postseason performance for Jordan that year. He made 4 starts, won 3 of them, completed 3 of them (one of which was a shutout), and had a 49/3 K/BB in 34 innings. The Braves would prevail of Pittsburgh in 7 games that year. Jordan won his 5th, and final, Cy Young Award in 2023 for Atlanta, and then finished up his amazing career with Washington. After the 2027 season, Jordan retired. At that point in time, he ranked 2nd all time in ERA, 1st in Wins, 1st in Strikeouts, 1st in Complete Games, and 1st in Shutouts. In 2045, he was passed up on the Shutouts list by Hector Soriano. In '46, Soriano passed him up on the Complete Games list. In 2054, he was finally passed on the all time Wins list by Robert Padgett. He had held that record since 2022. No one has touched him on the Strikeouts record; the second place player, Alex Castilleja, finished over 700 strikeouts behind Jordan. If I had to pick a record that might be unbreakable, it would be Jordan's career strikeouts. Simply put, in the current era of baseball, no pitchers have been able to consistently rack up the number of K's that Jordan did. For Jordan, 300 K's in a season was commonplace. Today, 300 is a very rare feat. As it is, Jordan is still second all time in wins (though of course, Segundo Narbaiza is gradually creeping closer to the top 3, and he could conceivably reach and pass Jordan sometime next season), 1st in strikeouts, 14th in ERA, 12th in complete games, and 4th in shutouts. Additionally, he still holds the AL single season K record, Harrisburg's single season ERA, Wins, K's, and K's in one game records, Atlanta's single season ERA, Wins, and K's records, Washington's single season K's record, and Grand Rapids' single season K's record. Truly, Robert Jordan was one of the greatest of all time. Jordan's career stats: Code:

Remembering the Hall of Famers: SS Hector Abad
Hector Abad:
To me, Hector Abad is significant for several reasons. Firstly, Abad was the fourth future HoFer to play for Atlanta at the same time in the early history of the league; the other three have all been mentioned already. Secondly, I would consider Abad to be the final member of the first era of Hall of Famers. By that, I mean those players who had established themselves as great players in the first decade of the league. Though Abad's career would encompass all of the second decade, and stretch well into the third decade, it was in the first decade that he first established himself. Lastly, if one were to try to decide who was the greatest hitter ever, Hector Abad would probably be one of the first players mentioned. Strangely, Abad's career developed very similarly to Robert Jordan's. Like Jordan, Abad was drafted by Grand Rapids. Three years after drafting Jordan in 2006, the Tigers made Abad the #1 overall pick in the 2009 draft. Within three seasons, Abad was an All-Star, batting .336 with 31 HR in 2011. In 2013, Abad won his first Silver Slugger Award. Two years after Jordan had left Grand Rapids for a National League team, Abad did the same, signing with Portland in 2015. He proceeded to win back to back Silver Sluggers in 2015 and 2016. And then, one year before Jordan would do so, Abad signed with Atlanta in 2019, joining 1B Carlos Testa and 2B Tony Martinez to form one of the most talented infields ever assembled. That year, Atlanta would lose a heartbreaking Game Seven in the ALCS to Memphis: 5-3 in 13 innings. Abad batted .464 in that series. Despite the addition of Jordan in 2020, the Braves once again lost in 7 games in the ALCS, this time to Grand Rapids. In 2021, however, Atlanta would finally emerge victorious, reaching the World Series, and beating Pittsburgh in 7 games. Abad would play the hero in Game 4 of the World Series. The Braves trailed 2 games to 1, and had gotten pummeled in Game 3 by a score of 14-1. In Game 4, the Pirates jumped to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Abad stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first and ripped a two run homer to tie the game up. The Braves struck for 4 runs in the second inning, but the lead was in danger after Pittsburgh scored 3 in the 7th inning. In the bottom of the 7th, Abad belted his second homerun of the game, and the Braves would escape with a 7-5 win, evening the series. Following the 2021 season, Abad was awarded his fourth Silver Slugger. In 2025, Abad became the all time leader in homeruns and was the first player to hit 600 HR in a career. By the 2027 season, Abad stood atop the hit list, the HR list, the RBI list, the walks list, and the runs scored list. He ranked 5th in AVG, 10th in doubles, 2nd in triples, and 20th in stolen bases. He remained the HR leader until he was passed by current leader Donald Murillo in 2040. Although he has slipped from the very top of most of these lists, today he remains the all time leader in walks, and sits 11th in hits, 5th in HR, 9th in RBI, 5th in triples, and 2nd in runs scored. Ellis Bolling and Joseph Swayze were particularly strong contributers. Bolling went 8 for 25, with 5 doubles and 1 homerun, and 10 runs batted in. Denver @ Memphis (13-0 victory) Denver @ Memphis (2-8 defeat) Memphis @ Denver (4-5 defeat) Memphis @ Denver (5-3 victory) Memphis @ Denver (0-5 defeat) Kansas City @ Denver (4-1 victory) Kansas City @ Denver (8-3 victory) The first full week of June saw the Broncos conclude a three game series in Memphis, then return home to face those very same Grizzlies for another three games, and then begin a four game set against the Royals. Memphis proved troublesome, as the Broncos wound up losing four of the six games. They bounced back from that, however, and took the first two games of the series with Kansas City. Ellis Bolling's bat spent the week battering baseballs, as he went 8 for 23 with 7 doubles and 7 RBI. Asbel Fuentez went 8 for 16 and scored 5 runs. Kenny Pillsbury continued his fine season by winning both of his starts, posting a 0.53 ERA, and throwing a complete game shutout against Memphis. Milestone Watch: Hits: Code:
