Green Bay @ Denver (5-8 defeat) Denver @ Nashville (1-2 defeat) Denver @ Nashville (8-3 victory) Denver @ Nashville (0-1 defeat) Denver @ Washington (10-3 victory) Denver @ Washington (7-6 victory) The Broncos fought through a mediocre week to end on a high note, winning the final two games of the week after going just 1-3 in the first four. Asbel Fuentez was the hitting star, going 11 for 24 with 2 doubles and 4 stolen bases. Lee Chappel went 5 for 19 with 2 HR and 6 walks. Mark Bakke went 7 for 21 with 5 RBI. Not surprisingly, Alexis Vazquez was named the American League Batter of the Month for his stupendous efforts in the month of April. Through the end of April, Vazquez had batted .430/.450/.860/1.310 with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 13 HR, 37 RBI, 25 runs scored, and 3 stolen bases. He was leading the league in batting average, HR, and RBI, and was second in OPS to teammate Lee Chappel. Additionally, he had failed to record at least one hit in only one game. Remembering the Hall of Famers: CF Micheal Bruce
Micheal Bruce:
If ever a player could be described as the "face" of a franchise, or even the "face" of an entire league, it would be Micheal Bruce. Bruce was the foundation of the early Pittsburgh dynasty, and played long enough to lead the next generation of players into battle, as well. Patrolling centerfield year after year for the Pirates, he just kept on piling up the numbers. He won no MVP awards, yet when it was all said and done, Bruce was the first player to achieve both 3,000 hits and 500 HR in a career. In 2022, his final season, he reached the top of the all time hit list, and ranked 3rd in homeruns. Though he lasted less than a year atop of the hit list, he still ranks 22nd all time. He remained in the top 25 of HR until 2056. He also sits at 22nd in RBI, 19th in doubles, tied for 3rd in triples, and 13th in runs scored. Bruce, of course, did not achieve just personal milestones. From 2003 to 2022, he helped Pittsburgh become the most dominant team of that era. The first World Series championship came in 2005, and then came a run of six consecutive championships from 2008 to 2013. He and the Pirates snagged their 8th and 9th championships in 2015 and 2019, and then Bruce went out on top, winning his and Pittsburgh's 10th championship in his final season in 2022. By then, only Bruce and reserve outfielder Michael Reed still remained from the end of Pittsburgh's 6 year run. Though Bruce still had life left in him, it was time for a new generation of players to make their mark, and he rode off into the sunset after that season. In addition to the tremendous career numbers that Bruce accumulated, his 14 All Star appearances are strong arguments to his case as the greatest centerfielder to ever play. Strangely, Bruce's postseason performances tended to be rather lackluster. Despite a career batting average of .299 and a career OPS of .915, Bruce batted just .249 with a .763 OPS in the playoffs. His best postseason performance, in 2014, actually came in a year that Pittsburgh didn't win the championship. Bruce's stats: Code:

Denver @ Washington (9-17 defeat) Denver @ Kansas City (10-3 victory) Denver @ Kansas City (10-1 victory) Denver @ Kansas City (8-7 victory) Memphis @ Denver (25-2 victory) Memphis @ Denver (7-3 victory) Memphis @ Denver (8-2 victory) After getting their heads beaten in by Washington to start the week, the Broncos rebounded to win six straight games, moving past Tucson into first place in the process. Along the way, they also bludgeoned Memphis into a bloody pulp. The game one rout was a 1-1 game until the bottom of the third inning, when Denver exploded for 10 runs, getting a two out grand slam from Lee Chappel. In that game, Tomas Sato delivered 6 hits, 4 RBI, and 5 runs scored. Russell Thomas had 4 hits and 3 runs scored. Ellis Bolling drove in 4 runs. Joseph Swayze collected 3 hits, 4 RBI, and 3 runs scored. For the week, Alexis Vazquez, Thomas, and Bolling were the most prominent hitting performers. Vazquez continued what is looking like a career year by going 12 for 26 with a double, three HR, 10 RBI, and 11 runs scored. Thomas went 14 for 25 with 2 doubles, 6 RBI, 8 runs scored, and 3 walks. Bolling went 8 for 22 with 3 doubles, 4 homeruns, and 17 runs batted in. On the pitching side of things, Kenny Pillsbury went 2-0 in 2 starts, with a 2.16 ERA, and a complete game, while Robert McNett threw a complete game, 5-hitter, with only 1 run allowed. Milestone Watch: Code:

Bryant 3294 A little update on this. At 38 years of age, Santiago Serrato is slowing down considerably, with only 3 hits so far in the month of May. Still, he only needs 14 more hits. As long as he doesn't get hurt, he should still be okay. Ricky Vega, on the other hand, is 40 years old and doesn't appear to be slowing down at all. He's having an excellent season, so far. Even so, reaching 4th place is about the absolute best he can hope for in terms of hits. Code:

The two questions now are: Can he reach McComas this season? Difficult, certainly, but I still think it is doable for him. Secondly, will he play another season and be able to pass up Jordan and Padgett? Playing at least another season, and maybe two more, seems quite likely. If he reaches McComas this season, he would then need 18 to tie Padgett. Again, difficult but doable.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: 1B Carlos Testa
Carlos Testa:
Carlos Testa was the very first player taken in an amateur draft, selected number one overall by Kansas City in 2004. He split his first professional season between AAA and the major leagues before becoming an everyday player in 2005. He rapidly developed into one of the more well-rounded 1B in the game, displaying both doubles and homerun power, an ability to hit for average, and excellent plate discipline. He even proved himself to be a slight threat on the basepaths. In 2007, he made the first of 10 All Star games. In 2012, he brought Atlanta to the brink of a championship with a tremendous postseason performance, that included a 3 HR game in Game Two of the World Series. Alas, his Braves blew a 3 games to 2 series lead, and lost in 7 games to Pittsburgh. Two years later, however, Testa would have his revenge. The Braves stopped Pittsburgh's run of championships at 6, knocking them off in 6 games in 2014. In Game One, Testa delivered a 2 out, three run homer in the 6th inning to erase a 2-1 deficit, and the Braves prevailed 6-2. In Game Four, with the Braves leading the series 2 games to 1, Testa broke a 1-1 tie in the 8th inning by hitting a two run double. Atlanta went on to win that game, 4-1. Testa would drive in 8 runs in the series. From 2018 to 2020, Atlanta lost three consecutive ALCS, all in 7 games. Testa performed relatively poorly in all three series. In 2021, Testa, then 38 years old, fought through multiple injuries during the season that caused him to miss nearly three months of the season. But he was healthy for the playoffs, and he batted .308 with a .987 OPS to help lead Atlanta to another World Series victory. To this day, Testa is 24th all time in doubles, 4th all time in walks, and 7th in runs scored. Testa's career stats: Code:

Remembering the Hall of Famers: 1B John Esquivel
John Esquivel:
With John Esquivel's induction to the Hall of Fame, an era of baseball came to a close. Esquivel would be the final player taken in the league's inaugural draft to become a Hall of Famer. Aside from that, Esquivel's primary claim to fame was an exceptional ability to hit for average. Although he developed solid power eventually, Esquivel's mark was made with his 2,966 career hits, his 8 200 hit seasons, and his .319 career batting average. Despite not being a prototypical 1B, Esquivel still managed to make 10 All Star teams in his career, including 7 in a row from 2012 to 2018. Esquivel's career stats: Code:

Nashville @ Denver (10-4 victory) Nashville @ Denver (9-8 victory) Denver @ Tucson (3-1 victory) Denver @ Tucson (7-6 victory) Denver @ Tucson (8-13 defeat) It was another good week for the Broncos. They swept a two game set from Nashville, and then took 2 of 3 from Tucson to open a 5 game lead in the division on the Diamondbacks. Currently, Denver has the best record in baseball at 30-11. Mark Bakke and Lee Chappel led the offensive charge for the Broncos. Bakke was 10 for 20 with 2 doubles, 1 homerun, 6 RBI, and 3 SB. Chappel was 9 for 19 with 4 doubles, 1 homerun, 4 RBI, 6 runs scored, and 6 walks. Christopher Kirk threw a complete game in the 3-1 victory against Tucson. There was one bit of bad news for the Broncos, however. George Buentello left his start on the 16th with pain in his elbow. It was diagnosed as a strained elbow ligament, and Buentello will be out for about two months. It's a tough break for a guy who had appeared to finally break through to the major leagues. In somewhat of a surprise decision, the Broncos will not promote veteran pitcher Larry Waltz, who was an effective starter down the stretch last season, but instead will call up gigantic 26 year old left-hander James Myatt. Myatt is a towering 6 feet, 11 inches, and has posted a 2.96 ERA in 8 AAA starts this season, with a 77/12 K/BB ratio in 54 2/3 IP. He has only 2 career major league appearances. Waltz, 33 years of age, has a 4.05 ERA in 7 starts at AAA, and 58/7 K/BB ratio in 40 innings pitched. Denver GM John Mounts said that he felt that Myatt would present a better matchup against the left-handed heavy lineup of Grand Rapids in the coming week, and that he wanted to reward the younger pitcher for his strong performance at AAA to date. "Obviously, if James struggles, Larry remains our second option while George is injured," he added. Milestone Watch: Hits: Code:

Remembering the Hall of Famers: 2B Tony Martinez
Tony Martinez:
If one was to put together a list of the most well-rounded ballplayers in league history, Tony Martinez would be a very good place to start. Martinez rose to prominence in the 20-teens, displaying fearsome HR power, an excellent ability to hit for average, tremendous patience at the plate, the occasional stolen base, and a top notch glove at second base. And he did it all for a consistent winner, Atlanta, who reached the postseason 8 times in his career, winning two World Series. His power was unquestioned: Three times he belted 50 or more homeruns, and three more times, he hit 40 or more. His ability to get hits was superb: he batted .302 for his career, and topped .300 in a season 10 times. His batting eye was among the best in the league at the time: He led the league in walks 4 times, and OBP, 5 times. Nine times did he draw 100 or more walks in a season. Not an elite base-stealer, he nonetheless managed to top 10 steals in a season seven times. He was an excellent defensive 2B, winning 4 Gold Glove awards in his career. After two lackluster postseason performances in 2008 and 2009, Martinez helped lead Atlanta to the World Series in 2012, where they lost in 7 games to Pittsburgh. Martinez batted .313 with 4 homeruns. Two years later, however, Atlanta beat Pittsburgh in the World Series, and Martinez blasted 5 homeruns during that postseason run. In 2021, Martinez would deliver 5 postseason extrabase hits en route to another championship victory. In 2022, Martinez would pass up Timothy Knight to become the all time HR leader. His stay at the top of the list would not last long, however, and he was passed up in 2024 by Cody Newport. Today, Martinez ranks tied for 22nd all time in homeruns, 20th in RBI, and 11th in walks. Remembering the Hall of Famers: SS Cody Newport
Cody Newport: Cody Newport emerged as the hitting star of the great Memphis teams in the early history of the league, leading them to three straight World Series from 2008 to 2010. Unfortunately for Newport and the Grizzlies, they lost all three to Pittsburgh, and Newport didn't exactly light the world on fire with his postseason performances. Following the third defeat, Newport jumped ship for a Nashville team that had finished second in their division by 5 games in 2010. Newport proved to be the missing piece, and Nashville reached the World Series, only to lose in 7 games to Pittsburgh, though Newport did his best, hitting .357 with 7 XBH and 10 RBI Over the next few seasons, Nashville struggled, and even finished in last place on a couple of occasions. In 2015, however, they were rejuvenated, and finished with the best record in baseball at 101-61. Despite another superb performance from Newport, Nashville once again ran into Pittsburgh in the World Series and were defeated in heartbreaking fashion (In Game 7, they blew a 3-0 ninth inning lead, and then blew a 4-3 10th inning lead to lose 5-4 in 10 innings). Newport left Nashville following that defeat and joined Kansas City for the 2016 season. The Royals, losers of the 2013 World Series, had suffered through a couple of mediocre seasons since then. Newport would lead them back to the playoffs, and ultimately, to their first championship- a sweep against Los Angeles- though he did little in the postseason. He would never again play in a World Series, and, in fact, would only reach the postseason one more time in his career. Newport was a magnificent hitter, capable of banging out 40 doubles and 40 homers while batting well over .300 in any given year. He was also noted for being one of the most prolific whiffers to ever play. In 2022, he became just the second player to reach 3,000 career hits, and the second to reach 3,000 hits and 500 HR. In 2023, he passed up Micheal Bruce to become the all time hits leader, and a year later, became the all time HR leader, as well. His stay at the top of the HR chart, however, did not last even one season, as he was passed up by Hector Abad the following season. In 2027, Abad would pass up Newport on the hits list, as well. Newport held the top spot on the career doubles list until 2036. Today, Newport ranks 13th in hits, tied for 17th in HR, 13th in RBI, 10th in doubles, and 25th in runs scored. He is one of a small handful of players to rank so highly in that many categories. Newport's career stats: Code:
