Remembering the Hall of Famers: SP Jacob Jackson

Jacob Jackson:

Starting with Jacob Jackson, we begin discussion of those Hall of Famers who first established themselves in the second decade of the league's history. Jackson broke in with Pittsburgh at the tail end of their first dynasty. In fact, his rookie season(2014) was the year that the Pirates had their run of six consecutive championships come to an end against Atlanta. Jackson had an excellent rookie season, going 12-3 with a 2.73 ERA in 23 starts. After that, Jackson was relatively mediocre for a couple of seasons. He showed good stuff, but struggled to harness it. He was a key contributor to the Pirates' 2015 championship team, though.

In 2019, Jackson had his breakthrough season, going 23-2 with a 2.71 ERA. Pittsburgh cruised to another World Series victory, and Jackson won the Cy Young award. Jackson remained one of the top pitchers in the National League for almost a decade after that, and helped Pittsburgh to back to back championships in 2022 and 2023. Strangely, his best postseason performance came in a year that the Pirates did not win the World Series. In 2020, Jackson was unscored upon in two postseason starts- 13 innings- but received two no-decisions and the Pirates lost in 7 games in the NLCS that year to Portland. Game 5 was particularly galling. With the series tied at two games apiece, Jackson took the mound. Backed by a solo homerun from SS Joseph Allaire in the second inning and a three run blast by left-fielder Abdiel Llorent in the third inning, the Pirates were firmly in control at 4-0. Jackson left the game having thrown 6 scoreless innings, with 8 strikeouts, and the 4 run lead intact. Pittsburgh added a 5th run in the seventh inning, but Jackson's replacement, relief pitcher Douglas McCourt, immediately imploded, and gave up 4 runs over the next two innings. Pittsburgh's closer, Craig Posada, then blew the lead in the ninth inning. In the top of the 13th inning, the Pirates retook the lead, only to blow it and lose in the bottom of the 13th.

When he retired, Jackson's name was prominent in many categories of the career leaderboard. He ranked 6th in ERA, 3rd in Wins, and 4th in Strikeouts. Today, Jackson is tied for 21st all time in Wins and 27th in Strikeouts. He was still in the top 25 of ERA as recently as 2072.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: CF Emilio Fernandez

Emilio Fernandez:

Emilio Fernandez was the first challenger to Micheal Bruce for the title of "Best Centerfielder." Fernandez was a dangerous slugger, and one of the best defensive CF of all time. His six Gold Glove awards in CF are tied for third most ever. Only Marcelo Silvera(8) and Tod Tsukasa(7) won more Gold Gloves in CF than Fernandez. Fernandez is also one of the seven players who won at least 4 Silver Slugger Awards. (Some of those players have already been mentioned: Scott Border, whose 6 are the most won by any player; Kangorou Yataro, and Timothy Knight.)

Fernandez had the kind of rookie season that most players would love to have. He batted .305, smacked 25 HR, and drove in 96 runs. That was good enough for the Rookie of the Year award, making him the third ROTY winner to be inducted into the Hall of Fame (Michael Mathew and Devin Stalter were the first two). Two years later, the young Grand Rapids CF exploded onto baseball's premiere stage, batting .354 with 49 longballs- good enough to win the Silver Slugger Award. Fernandez became one of the elite sluggers at that point, blasting 40 or more HR in five of the next six seasons, including one 50 HR season.

In 2017, he carried Grand Rapids to a championship, batting a whopping .457 with 6 doubles and 3 HR in the playoffs. In 2018, Fernandez led the Tigers to a second straight championship, and won his first Gold Glove Award.

Fernandez would leave Grand Rapids following that second championship, and sign with Washington, a team that had finished in last place in 2017 and 2018. While the Tigers immediately sunk into last place themselves in 2019, Fernandez helped the Senators reach .500. It was a mirage, however. Washington sunk back into last in 2021, and Grand Rapids, despite winning only 84 games, still managed to win their division, and parlayed that into a stunning upset of the 112 win Braves in the ALCS, and then a World Series sweep of Portland. In the ensuing years, Washington would remain a perennial bottom feeder, while Grand Rapids managed to consistently be competitive, with several more division titles, and a World Series defeat in 2024. Despite three more Silver Sluggers for Fernandez, he was unable to get Washington into the playoffs. In 2029, Fernandez was pushed out the door by Washington. They signed CF Tod Tsukasa to a big contract and traded Fernandez to Sacramento in early May of that season. The Senators wound up having their best season in over 15 years, winning 90 games. They finished two games out of first place, however. Meanwhile, Fernandez helped to bring Sacramento to the brink of a playoff birth as well. Unfortunately, they, too, missed the playoffs by a hair- finishing 1 game behind Los Angeles. Funnily enough, the team that wound up winning the World Series that year, was none other than Grand Rapids, Fernandez's original team.

Washington, by the way, would not win a World Series until 2077 (though they made appearances in 2035 and 2067).

When Fernandez retired, he ranked 3rd in AVG, 4th in Hits, 4th in HR, 7th in RBI, and 10th in runs scored. Today, however, he has fallen out of the top 25 in all of those categories.

Kansas City @ Denver (9-2 victory)
Denver @ Miami (3-7 defeat)
Denver @ Miami (8-4 victory)
Grand Rapids @ Denver (11-3 victory)
Grand Rapids @ Denver (6-10 defeat)

It was another solid week for the Broncos, as they finished off a four game sweep of the Royals, split a two game set with the Dolphins, and opened a series with the Tigers by splitting the first two games.

Asbel Fuentez won his second career Player of the Week award, by going 15 for 28, with 4 doubles, 2 homers, 3 RBI, and 10 runs scored. Alexis Vazquez, who had finally cooled off from his hot start, started to heat up again, going 11 for 23 with 3 doubles, 3 homers, and 7 runs batted in. Lee Chappel went 9 for 23, with 6 doubles, 6 RBI, 9 runs scored, and 4 walks. Tomas Sato was 11 for 21 with 9 runs batted in.

Two players who did not contribute positively for Denver were Joseph Swayze and Robert McNett. Swayze, a player notorious for his extreme hot and cold streaks, has been ice cold lately. This week, he was a pathetic 1 for 20. Starting pitcher McNett wasn't much better. He made two starts for the Broncos, but pitched a total of only 6 innings while getting blasted for 13 runs.

Ricky Vega moved up another spot on the hit list, and is now only 15 hits away from being tied for 6th all time with Danny Homan.

Vega has been in a HR drought lately, and reaching the second spot becomes more and more of a longshot for him.

As flawed a stat as RBIs are, I believe there is still something to be said for being the all time leader in them. Vega is now just 1 RBI away from tying Homan.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: 2B Bill Criss

Bill Criss:

While Bill Criss was a superb hitter- a high-average doubles hitter in his prime-his biggest claim to fame is being one of the greatest defensive 2B of all time. Criss was one of only two 2B to win as many as 7 Gold Gloves in a career.

He broke into the big leagues in 2012 for Harrisburg, and spent several seasons receiving minimal playing time. Very early into his fourth season, he was traded for a mid-20's 3B, who was still a rookie, named Ray Monroy.

(Author's note: Monroy went on to collect 240 hits and a .371 AVG en route to winning the ROTY award. Both the AVG and hit total remain NL rookie records today. Two years later, Monroy would become the first player in league history to hit .400 in a season; he posted a .412 AVG that season.)

Criss' career took off for his new team, Grand Rapids. In his first season as a regular, he batted .318 with 51 doubles and 95 RBI. He remained with the Tigers for a few more years, winning a World Series with them in 2017, though his postseason performance was quite forgettable. He signed with Nashville prior to the 2018 season, but his stay there was short-lived. Before the month of April was completed, he was dealt to Rochester as the "one" in a three-for-one trade.

(Author's note: One of the "three" was a young pitching prospect named Jeremy Poss. Poss will be discussed in the near future.)

It is with the Rhinos that Criss played the longest. For essentially seven seasons, Criss was a fixture at 2B in Rochester. He made two All Star teams and won four of his Gold Gloves with them. Criss would then finish out his career first with Tucson and then with Portland.

As a hitter, Criss is probably one of the weaker members of the Hall of Fame, but I think that his fielding prowess may offset that enough to make him a solid selection.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: SS Jose Rocha

Jose Rocha:

Every manager dreams about having a SS like Jose Rocha- an absolutely terrific hitter who can also cover half of the infield with his glove. Rocha was nearly a perfect blend of these attributes. Five Gold Glove awards are a testament to his fielding ability. Four batting titles speak to his hitting ability. But lest you think he was just a singles hitter, it should be pointed out that he ripped over 700 doubles and belted more than 350 longballs in his career. He also won two Silver Slugger awards.

At the time of Rocha's retirement, he ranked 12th in AVG, 9th in hits, 20th in RBI, 6th in doubles, and 24th in runs scored. Today, he still ranks 23rd on the doubles list.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: RF Nathan Keith

Nathan Keith:

While every great team needs its star players, it also needs a few of those players that can be plugged into the lineup every day and put up solid numbers on a consistent basis. And sometimes, you look up at one of those players and realize, "Hey, this guy was pretty good. Maybe even a Hall of Famer." Nathan Keith was one of those players. Keith was Pittsburgh's starting right-fielder from the middle teen years to the very early 30's. And while he wasn't going to win any Silver Sluggers, he was a 10 time All Star who won a batting title.

Keith was the kind of player who did a little bit of everything. He was a good hitter for average(.312 for his career and a batting title in 2016), a line drive hitter who hit a good number of doubles(he had one 40 double season), a good enough runner to turn some of those doubles into triples(he led the league in triples four times), a solid, if unspectacular, HR threat(over 200 career longballs), a possessor of a solid batting eye(he drew around 60 walks per season and had a .380 career OBP), and a capable defensive player in RF. And he was durable, to boot. He had 10 seasons of at least 150 games played, and was rarely injured.

In addition to that, Keith was an excellent postseason performer. Micheal Bruce's retirement following the 2022 season left Keith (then 30 years old) and the other younger veterans on the team as the team leaders. Keith stepped forward in the 2023 postseason as he led the team in AVG, hits, RBI, and R in the playoffs. In the first three games of the World Series against Nashville that year, Keith was hitless, and the Pirates trailed 2 games to 1. But in Game 3, Keith had a hit and a walk, and scored 2 runs in the Pittsburgh's 6-3 victory. In Game 4, Keith drove in a pair of runs in a 4-1 Pittsburgh victory. In what would be the deciding game, Nashville grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. But the veteran Keith drove in a run of his own in the bottom of the first, and with the game tied at 2 in the 8th inning, Keith drove in a second run to briefly give the Pirates the lead. That lead would be blown in the ninth inning, but Pittsburgh recovered to win 5-4, taking the series in 6 games. Unfortunately for Keith, that would be the last championship of his career. The Pirates lost the 2025 Series in a rematch against Nashville, and wouldn't reach the World Series again until Keith's final season in 2032. By that point, however, Keith was no longer an effective player, and he was not on the postseason roster. Not that it mattered; they lost that Series, too.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: CL Craig Posada

Craig Posada:

It's not easy for a closer to get into the Hall of Fame. In a league where starting pitchers throw lots of innings and rack up plenty of complete games, it is difficult for any relief pitcher to compile the kind of save totals that would warrant consideration. Thus, there are only two closers currently in the Hall of Fame, and not surprisingly, they are first and second on the all time saves list.

The first of those is Craig Posada. Posada broke into the big leagues in 2015 for Pittsburgh and was immediately thrust into the closer role. He wasn't great, but he wasn't bad enough to prevent the Pirates from capturing the World Series that year. He would remain Pittsburgh's closer for just over a decade, make four All Star teams, lead the league in saves four times, and help the Pirates win the World Series in 2019, 2022, and 2023 (in addition to the one in 2015). The 2022 postseason was perhaps his shining moment; he was unscored upon in 6 appearances and he notched 5 saves. In Pittsburgh's 4 game sweep of Nashville in the World Series, he notched saves in all four games, as the Pirates won the games by a combined 5 runs(4-3, 11-9, 6-5, and 4-3).

Two years later, Posada was traded to Washington, where he played until the 2030 season. He made his 5th All Star team while with the Senators. His final three seasons were spent with Hartford and Nashville.

In 2026, Posada became the all time saves leader. By the end of his career, he had accumulated 570 career saves, and was one of just two players to reach 500 in a career. Posada remains the all time leader, as the only player to threaten his mark was Luis Velasco, who came up one save short of tying Posada. As it is, only 6 players have ever reached 500 saves, and there are no active players with even 350. Of all of the career records, I would guess that Posada's is one of the safest from being broken.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: 2B Carlos Camuñas

Carlos Camuñas:

Thus far, few of the Hall of Famers have been significant base steailng threats. Camuñas is the first. Another Pittsburgh alumnus, Camuñas broke into the majors with a cup of coffee in 2017. He went back to AAA for the following season, but received a more extended cup of coffee. In 2019, he was in the big leagues for good, though he was only a part time player that season. The Pirates won the World Series that year, but Camuñas didn't play much of a role. He became a regular in 2020 and performed decently. In 2021, he broke out in a big way. He finished second in the batting race with a .352 average, but led the league with a .421 OBP. He also rapped 44 doubles. His postseason that year was stupendous, though Pittsburgh failed to win the Series. He batted .385 with 9 doubles, and reached base at a .500 clip, while scoring 11 runs. In 2022, Camuñas again finished second in the batting race, while leading the league in OBP. Another superb postseason performance helped Pittsburgh win the World Series. It would set the stage for a magnificent 2023.

Through April 2023, Camuñas was batting .385. In May, he got red hot, and batted a whopping .465 for the month, while posting an OBP of .574. Although he cooled off in June (only .357), his season AVG still stood at .407 for the year. He continued to cool off through August, and his AVG dipped to .394. In August, he started to heat up again, but heading into the final month of the season, his AVG remained at .394. In September, Camuñas gave it all he had, batting .408 for the month, but his run at .400 would come up short. He finished with a .397 AVG, good for his first batting title, and a league leading .479 OBP. He also ripped 53 doubles. Unfortunately, he must have run out of gas, as his postseason numbers were dreadful. Nevertheless, Pittsburgh captured its second straight championship.

Camuñas won his second batting title the following year, and remained one of the best hitters for average in the league for nearly another decade. His excellent plate discipline enabled him to post consistent .400+ OBP. He didn't hit many homeruns, but he was annual 40 double hitter. He also turned into a dangerous base-stealing threat in 2024, stealing more than 20 for the first time in his career. From then on, he was a consistent, and efficient, 20-30 base-stealer.

In 2033, Camuñas would go out on top. He batted .342 in the playoffs and helped lead Pittsburgh to another World Series one more time before he retired. When he retired following that World Series, Camuñas ranked second all time in batting average, 18th in doubles, tied for 21st in runs scored, and tied for 21st in stolen bases. Today, his AVG is still good enough for 24th place on the all time list.

Denver @ Charlotte (6-2 victory)
Denver @ Charlotte (17-11 victory)
Denver @ Nashville (6-2 victory)
Denver @ Nashville (5-6 defeat in 11 innings)
Denver @ Nashville (9-2 victory)

It was an excellent week for the Broncos, as they lost just once in seven games. The week included a three game sweep of Charlotte, in which Denver really broke out the bats, scoring 38 runs in all.

Asbel Fuentez was named the AL Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. He went 13 for 24, with a double, three homeruns, 8 RBI, 12 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases. Ellis Bolling went 11 for 29, with 6 doubles, 4 RBI, and 4 runs scored. Alexis Vazquez was 10 for 22, with a double, a triple, 3 HR, 9 RBI, and 10 runs scored.

Two bench players also added some contributions. Infielder Jack Rumfelt was 5 for 14, with a pair of homeruns, 4 runs batted in, and 4 runs scored. Backup catcher Michael Grace was 4 for 11, with a double, two homers, 5 RBI, and 5 runs scored.

On the pitching side of things, Christopher Kirk won both of his starts, posted a 3.00 ERA, and threw a complete game against Nashville.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: 1B Vern Harrison

Vern Harrison:

Is there a place in the Hall of Fame for a player who plays for 20 seasons, puts up consistent and excellent, if not quite tremendous, numbers, and makes 11 consecutive All Star teams (13 in all)? In Vern Harrison's case, the answer is yes. It is true that Harrison never had a season that might be called truly elite, but for over a decade, he was one of the best 1B in the league. He was durable and consistent over those years. You knew what you would get from him every year: 155 games, 30 doubles, 25-30 HR, 70-80 walks, a few stolen bases, a solid batting average, and a good glove at first base.

Harrison was the second overall draft pick by Los Angeles in 2016. He jumped right into the big leagues without spending a day in the minor leagues. He shared playing time with the incumbent 1B, and while his numbers weren't great, they were perfectly acceptable for an 18 year old rookie. That year, the Dodgers made their first World Series, but were swept by Kansas City. Harrison contributed positively by going 4 for 9.

Over the next several seasons, Harrison struggled to consolidate his skills. He struggled badly in 2017, but improved in 2018, and then made his first All Star game in 2019. He then slumped again in 2020 and 2021 and was traded to Portland. The Dodgers made the playoffs every year from 2016 to 2019, but did not reach the World Series again after 2016. In 2020, the Dodgers slumped, and Portland took advantage, winning the division and making their first World Series appearance, getting swept by Grand Rapids. The following year, things did not improve for the Dodgers, and Harrison was traded near the deadline to Portland, who won their second straight division title.

At that point, Harrison made the ill-fated decision to sign with Rochester. In 2022, Portland finished with the best record in baseball, winning 110 games (they would lose in the NLCS, however). Rochester, meanwhile, finished in last place. Portland continued to dominate the NL West division, finally winning the World Series in 2024. Rochester, however, remained mediocre at best. In 2025, Harrison jumped from the floundering ship of Rochester and headed to Hartford, a team that wasn't much better.

After three years in Hartford that looked much the same as the three in Rochester, Harrison headed back to Portland. By that point, however, Portland's hold on their division had waned. In 2028 and 2029, Portland lost 93 and 90 games, respectively. That set the stage for the worst season in Portland history, to that date. In 2030, Portland lost a league worst 109 games. It didn't get much better after that in 2031, as they lost 106 games. The next two seasons were ones of mediocrity: 87 losses and 82 losses. Harrison left after that last season and signed with Sacramento. 2034 saw a battle for futility between Harrison's new team and his old team. Sacramento lost 103 games, while Portland sunk to the bottom again, losing 106 games.

Harrison played only one more season after that, hanging them up despite his skills still being at a high level, and despite the fact that the was quite close to a couple of major milestones: 3,000 hits and 500 HR. Today, Harrison still ranks 25th all time in walks, and 20th in runs scored.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: LF Abdiel Llorent

Abdiel Llorent:

It is not normally easy to replace a Hall of Fame talent at a particular position, but the presence of Abdiel Llorent allowed for a smooth transition in left field for the 2010's era Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2017, long time left fielder Kangorou Yataro was 37 years old and only a shadow of his former greatness. That opened the door for a 22 year old Llorent. Gifted with a powerful, compact swing, and a great batting eye, the young Llorent had demolished AAA pitching the previous season and was ready to make his mark in the big leagues.

His rookie season was solid, if unspectacular, and he was worn down by the time the postseason started. Though Pittsburgh reached, and lost, the World Series, Llorent was horrendous in the playoffs. In 2018, the LF job was completely his, and his numbers improved. Once again, however, Pittsburgh lost the World Series, and Llorent contributed little in the postseason.

The following season was Llorent's breakout year, and his bat carried Pittsburgh to the postseason, where they defeated Memphis in the World Series, though Llorent's postseason was again less than stellar. Llorent rapidly established himself as one of the elite hitters in the game, blasting doubles and homers with dangerous regularity, while displaying tremendous vision at the plate. In 2020, Pittsburgh lost in the NLCS, but Llorent finally had a postseason to be proud of. In 2021, Llorent carried the Pirates to the World Series, but they fell in 7 games to Atlanta, though Llorent's performance was superb. An injury in 2022 prevented Llorent from participating in that year's World Series run, but he returned the following season to win the NL Silver Slugger Award, and the Pirates won another World Series.

Pittsburgh wouldn't win another World Series until late in Llorent's career. By then Llorent was on his way out, and only saw limited action in the 2033 postseason, although he did blast a pair of homeruns. He didn't play at all in the 2034 postseason.

Today, Llorent ranks 12th all time in doubles and tied (with teammate and fellow HoFer, Micheal Bruce) for 22nd in RBI.

6/23/2082 to 7/2/2082

(This stretch of games actually encompasses more than a week, as it is nearing the All Star break, and the two weeks leading to the All Star game are rather light.)

Denver @ Tucson (3-2 victory)
Denver @ Tucson (8-11 defeat)
Denver @ Tucson (1-2 defeat)
Miami @ Denver (14-2 victory)
Miami @ Denver (6-5 victory)
Atlanta @ Denver (6-13 defeat)
Atlanta @ Denver (9-7 victory)

It was kind of an up and down stretch for the Broncos as they headed into the All Star break. They dropped 2 of 3 games to division rival Tucson, which you never like to have happen, but also swept a two game set from Miami- a team that Denver has often had trouble with.

Alexis Vazquez hit very well, going 9 for 27, with a triple, 2 homeruns, and 8 RBI. For his efforts in the month of June, Vazquez was named the AL Batter of the Month. Through the month, he hit .396/.443/.729/1.173 with 4 doubles, 2 triples, 8 homers, 28 runs batted in, and 23 runs scored. This is the second time this season that Vazquez has been named BotM (he was also BotM for the month of April).

Lee Chappel is also playing at a high level right now. Through this past stretch of games, he went 11 for 24, with 2 doubles, 2 homers, 10 RBI, 8 runs scored, and 9 walks. Booker Romero doesn't often get mentioned, mainly because his bat is pretty weak, but he went 9 for 26, with 5 doubles, and 4 RBI through this stretch. Lastly, Jack Rumfelt has seen an increase in playing time lately, and is making the most of it. With the aging Mark Bakke in a slump, Rumfelt has seen more time at 2B (where he is a pretty good fielder) and Tomas Sato has been playing DH in place of Bakke. Through this most recent stretch of games, then, Rumfelt has gone 9 for 20, with a double, 2 homeruns, and 8 runs batted in.

4 S. Narbaiza* 306
5 J. Poss 295
There is some bad news regarding this last one. Narbaiza was injured in a game against San Jose, and is expected to be out for around 7 weeks with a strained elbow ligament. This pretty much ends any chance of Narbaiza becoming the all time wins leader, and makes it much more difficult for him to even reach third place. At the beginning of the year, Narbaiza needed 26 wins to reach McComas, and then would need another 18 to reach Padgett. Given that he had won 26 games in 2081, I didn't think that 26 this season was out of reach, though it would certainly have been difficult. Well, that's not going to happen this year, now. At this rate, I figure that he will miss all of July and most of August. I would put a rough guess, then, at maybe 7 to 10 more starts from the last week of August to the first week of October. Assuming that he comes back and is still effective, that's probably 5 or 6 more wins in 2082. He would then need about 10 wins next season to reach McComas. At his age(37), who can say where he will be next season? Retired? Ineffective?

Right now, Denver, is cruising along. It's not a huge lead on Tucson, but its comfortable- a lot more comfotable than it was last season, that's for sure! Meanwhile, the most interesting playoff races seem to be the second place races in the Northeast and the Southeast Divisions. The Southeast, in particular, should be intriguing, because only 5 games separate the current 2nd place team and the 6th place team. All of those teams are close enough that one or two key acquisitions at the deadline could push any one of them above the rest.

I also have a question for anyone who may be reading this dynasty. Do you think that these Hall of Fame bios are distracting from the main focus of the thread? I ask this, primarily, because I had wanted to finish the bios by the time the season was completed, but it is now halfway through the season, and I am really not that far along with the bios. If I want to finish them by the time the season is over, I will have to significantly increase the ratio of bios to Denver updates. It would seem to me, then, that what is ostensibly the focus of the dynasty would be somewhat lost in the shuffle for awhile.

I would really appreciate some honest opinions of this.

2082 All Stars

The season is halfway through, and it's time for the mid-summer classic. Since Denver has the best record in baseball, it's not surprising that they also have the most representatives on the All-Star team, with a whopping eight players. San Diego, meanwhile, despite only being tied for the third best record in the National League, paces that League's team with five representatives.

The American League All Stars:

Catcher:

Denver's Lee Chappel has become a familiar face in the All Star game in recent years. The 31 year old makes his 6th appearance in the mid-summer classic. Last year's AL Silver Slugger winner is currently leading the league in OPS, is second in doubles, and is tied for second in runs scored. Chappel is a lifetime .318/.422/.598/1.020 hitter, with 437 doubles, 264 homeruns, 1012 RBI, 996 runs scored, and 830 walks.

Also taking up the "tools of ignorance" for the AL side is Kansas City's Ron Chien. Chien is 30 years old and making his second All Star team. He was also an All Star in 2080, when he batted .301 with 26 homeruns, 88 RBI, and 94 runs scored. This season, Chien has batted .320/.359/.564/.923, with 18 homeruns, and 58 runs batted in. For his career, Chien has batted .297/.351/.474/.825 with 192 homeruns.

First Base:

Denver slugger Ellis Bolling makes his 6th All Star appearance at the age of 33. Bolling, the Silver Slugger winner in 2074 and 2076, currently leads the American League in RBI and doubles. Bolling is a .274/.349/.603/.952 career hitter, with 570 doubles, 475 homeruns, 1479 RBI, and 1296 runs scored.

Manuel Madrid represents Washington as the second AL firstbaseman. The 36 year old is making his third All Star team. This season, Madrid has batted .311/.364/.521/.885, with 16 homers and 75 RBI. Madrid is a career .290/.360/.447/.807 hitter, with 186 homeruns.

Second Base:

Tucson's Elmer Giancola is the first of three secondbasemen on the roster. Giancola is 37 years old and this is his 6th All Star appearance. This year, he has hit .314/.413/.473/.886, with 8 homeruns, 55 RBI, and 57 runs scored. For his career, Giancola is .292/.360/.528/.888 hitter, with 404 homeruns, 1355 RBI, and 1138 runs scored.

Wayne Koeller is the second of the secondbasemen, representing Atlanta. This is the 8th All Star appearance for the 35 year old Koeller. The 2073 NL Silver Slugger winner(Rochester) has hit .305/.384/.546/.930 this year, with 17 homers and 51 runs batted in. Koeller is a lifetime .327/.410/.562/.972 hitter, with 2308 hits, 403 HR, 1361 RBI, 1375 runs scored, and 990 walks.

Rounding out the secondbasemen is Grand Rapids' Eddie Lauzon. This is the first appearance in the All Star game for the 33 year old. He has batted .282/.355/.495/.850 this year, with 16 homeruns, 59 RBI, and 59 runs scored. Lauzon is a career .267/.340/.474/.814 hitter, with 330 homeruns, 1184 RBI, and 998 runs scored.

Third Base:

One player will man the hot corner for the AL squad. That is Knoxville's Donald Noles. This is the second appearance in the All Star game for the 29 year old Noles. Previously, he made the team in 2079, when he batted .301 with 40 doubles, 53 homers, and 152 RBI. That was the same year he won the NL Silver Slugger award with Phoenix. This season, Noles is batting .321/.419/.595/1.014, with 23 doubles, 16 homers, 52 RBI, and 55 runs scored. Noles is a career .276/.366/.521/.887 hitter, with 200 homeruns, 683 RBI, and 669 runs scored.

Shortstop:

Atlanta's Roger Attaway makes his first All Star appearance at the age of 27. Attaway has hit .277/.381/.581/.962 this year, with 24 homeruns, 65 RBI, and 65 runs scored. He is a career .282/.359/.564/.923 hitter, with 321 homeruns, 880 RBI, and 868 runs scored.

Left Field:

The 33 year old Alexis Vazquez makes just the second All Star appearance of his career. The Denver leftfielder's first appearance in an All Star game came back in 2077, when he batted .343 with 34 homeruns, and 124 RBI. This season, Vazquez has been tremendous, and currently is second in the league in batting average, second in OPS, third in homeruns, second in RBI, and tied for second in runs scored. Truly, a career year so far for Vazquez. Vazquez is a lifetime .312/.357/.505/.862 hitter, with 224 homeruns, 885 RBI, 834 runs scored, and 112 stolen bases.

This is the sixth All Star appearance for Miami's Roy Springs. The 32 year old leftfielder, and 2080 AL Silver Slugger winner, has .298/.349/.654/1.003 this year, with a league-leading 31 homeruns, and a good-for-third-in-the-AL 80 runs batted in. Springs is a career .295/.354/.534/.888 hitter, with 324 homeruns, and 1081 runs batted in.

Joey Campos is Atlanta's third All Star representative. This is the fourth appearance in the All Star game for the 30 year old Campos. This year, Campos has hit .291/.386/.614/1.000, with 27 doubles, 21 homeruns, 60 RBI, and 63 runs scored. Campos is a career .309/.383/.589/.972 hitter, with 244 homeruns, 807 RBI, and 701 runs scored.

Centerfield:

Denver's Russell Thomas is the only CF on the roster. This is the third All Star appearance for the 31 year old Thomas. Thomas is a career .352/.407/.457/.864 hitter, with 62 homeruns, 768 runs scored, and 141 stolen bases.

Right Field:

Asbel Fuentez is the fifth position player representative for Denver. This is the third All Star appearance for the 34 year old Fuentez. This year, Fuentez leads the league in batting average, is third in OPS, first in runs scored, and first in stolen bases. Fuentez is a career .319/.387/.469/.856 hitter, with 2163 hits, 503 doubles, 122 homeruns, 1199 runs scored, and 637 stolen bases(9th on the career list).

This is the fourth All Star appearance for Kansas City's 32 year old rightfielder, "Broadway Jack" Ector. Pillsbury leads the majors with 14 wins this season. The 30 year old Pillsbury has a career record of 84-37, with a 4.18 ERA, and 819 strikeouts in 1095 innings pitched.

This is the first All Star game for Miami's 27 year old Christian Hokusai. A notable All Star snub from last year(he finished 21-5 with a 2.66 ERA, and 173 K's), Hokusai has left little doubt this season. He is 11-3 (tied for second in the league in wins), third in the league with a 2.51 ERA, and second in the league in strikeouts, with 116. This is only Hokusai's second full season as a starting pitcher, but he is 44-17 for his career, with a 3.05 ERA, and a 437/98 K/BB ratio in 549 1/3 innings pitched.

Miami's Jose Caceres is 34 years old, and this is his fourth trip to the All Star game. He is 10-2 this season, with a 3.19 ERA, and 70 strikeouts in 107 1/3 innings pitched. Caceres has a career record of 162-80, an ERA of 3.26, and 1880 strikeouts in 2217 innings pitched.

This may be the breakout year for 29 year old Nashville starter, Mose Urick. Lon expected to be a dominant ace, Urick is finally doing it in what is his first All Star appearance. Urick is 10-2, leads the league with a 1.91 ERA, and leads the league with 118 strikeouts. Urick is a career 95-76 pitcher, with a 3.70 ERA.

This is the first All Star appearance for Washington's 33 year old, Juan Fuentes. Fuentes is 11-5 (the win total is tied for second in the league), with a 4.10 ERA, and 108 strikeouts. He's also tossed 4 shutouts this season. For his career, Fuentes is an unimpressive 92-111, with an ERA of 5.00.

Tucson's Paul Reyes rounds out the starting pitchers for the American League. This is the first All Star appearance for the 24 year old pitcher. Reyes is 9-4, with a 3.44 ERA, and 109 strikeouts (good for third in the league). Reyes has a career record of 48-59, an ERA of 5.50, and 712 strikeouts in 875 innings pitched.

Relief Pitchers:

James Virgen is Denver's eighth All Star. This is the first appearance in the All Star game for the 33 year old reliever. For his career, Virgen has made 582 appearances, a record of 56-33, 46 saves, and ERA of 4.33, and a K/BB ratio of 580/264 in 791 2/3 innings pitched.

Nashville closer Jason Mather makes his first All Star appearance at the age of 36. Mather has 16 saves(third in the AL) this year in 32 games, a record of 4-1, and ERA of 3.67, and 30 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings pitched. Mather has 562 career appearances, 77 saves, an ERA of 4.80, and 789 strikeouts in 789 2/3 career innings pitched.

Memphis closer Jonah Alvarado completes the 2082 American League All Star team. Only 25 years old, this is Alvarado's first appearance in the All Star game. He has made 29 appearances this season, is 1-2, and leads the league with 19 saves. His ERA is 2.35, and he has 13 strikeouts in 30 2/3 innings pitched. For his career, Alvarado has already made 349 appearances. He is 19-24, with 85 saves, a 5.43 ERA, and 278 strikeouts in 421 innings pitched.

That's the American League 25. Nest up: The National League All Stars.

The 2082 All Stars, Part 2

The National League All Stars:

Catcher:

I mentioned that San Diego has the most All Stars in the National League. The first of those is 28 year old Clayton Threatt, making his first All Star game. Threatt is hitting .351/.426/.544/.970 this season, with 11 homeruns, and 64 RBI. For his career, Threatt is a .284/.342/.426/.769 hitter, with 52 homeruns, and 324 RBI.

Twenty-three year old Phoenix catcher, Ramon Martinez, also has a place on the NL squad. Martinez, a first time All Star, has hit .349/.384/.546/.930 so far this season, and has 11 homeruns, and 65 RBI. Martinez is a career .321/.358/.451/.809 hitter, with 40 homeruns, and 258 RBI.

First Base:

San Jose's Ugo Momoru, last season's NL Silver Slugger winner, makes his fifth All Star game at the age of 32. Momoru is batting .301/.406/.564/.970 this season, with 18 homeruns, and a second-in-the-NL 74 runs batted in. He also has scored 61 runs. Momoru is a career .295/.364/.575/.940 hitter, with 366 doubles, 394 homeruns, 1185 runs batted in, and 982 runs scored.

Sacramento's Nestor Adrover makes his first All Star game at the age of 23. Adrover has hit .333/.390/.543/.932 this year, with 14 homeruns, 54 RBI, and 56 runs scored. For his career, Adrover is a .294/.340/.495/.834 hitter, with 108 homers, 422 RBI, and 419 runs scored.

Second Base:

Possibly the greatest all around offensive force of this generation, San Diego's 34 year old Andrew Burdick is an All Star for the ninth time in his career. A two time Silver Slugger winner(2074 and 2080), Burdick is batting .373/.452/.581/1.033, with 14 homeruns, 53 RBI, and 74 runs scored. He is second in the NL in batting average, second in OPS, and first in runs scored. Burdick is a career .333/.421/.565/.985 hitter, with 2799 hits, 481 homeruns, 1498 runs batted in, 1803 runs scored, 1278 walks, and 324 stolen bases.

Third Base:

Rochester's Louis Guerriero is only 28 years old, but this is already his fifth All Star appearance. Guerriero is hitting .316/.394/.621/1.015 this season, with 33 doubles(tied for first in the NL), 17 homers, 56 RBI, and 65 runs scored. Phoenix's Mike Morales is clearly one of the league's rising stars. The 23 year old, first time All Star, is currently batting .356/.458/.660 and leads the league with a 1.118 OPS. He has belted 18 homers, and driven in 58 runs, while scoring 52. The young shortstop is a career .304/.407/.521/.928 hitter, with 44 homeruns, 159 RBI, and 152 runs scored.

This is the second appearance on an All Star team for Sacramento's Alberto O'Campo. The 27 year old was an All Star two years ago, when he hit .302, with 41 doubles, 35 homers, 126 RBI, and 32 stolen bases. Despite missing a month due to injury, 31 year old San Diego left fielder, Gregorio Ruiz has put up frightening numbers. Ruiz, making his fourth All Star appearance, has batted .395/.458/.774/1.232, blasted 19 doubles and 17 homers, driven in 50 runs, and scored 47 runs, all in just 190 at bats. Ruiz is a career .291/.362/.545/.907 hitter, with 353 doubles, 294 homeruns, and 1038 runs batted in.

This is the fourth All Star appearance for speedy San Jose left fielder, William Natali. Natali is 37 years old and still going strong. This season, he has hit .334/.366/.529/.895, with 33 doubles(tied for first in the NL), 9 homeruns, 69 runs scored(second in the NL), and 37 stolen bases(second in the NL). Natali is a career .336/.374/.500/.875 hitter, with 253 doubles, 106 homeruns, 762 runs scored, and 409 stolen bases.

Centerfield:

Los Angeles' Urbano Belmonte has made only two All Star games in his career, and they have come last year and this year for the 35 year old centerfielder. Belmonte is hitting a league leading .387, with a .419 OBP, a .610 SLG, and is third in the league with a 1.029 OPS. He also leads the league with 7 triples. He's added 10 homeruns, 48 RBI, and 62 runs scored. For his career, Belmonte has hit .304/.352/.454/.806, with 2143 hits, 164 homeruns, and 1099 runs scored.

The youngest player on either All Star team is San Diego centerfielder, Gaby Matos. The first time All Star is just 21 years old. Despite his youth, Matos is hitting .288/.376/.606/.982, with a league leading 25 homeruns, 49 RBI, 65 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases. Matos is a career .269/.370/.450/.820 hitter, with 54 homeruns, 266 runs scored, and 84 stolen bases.

Right Field:

Rounding out the National League's position players is Buffalo's John Kling. The 26 year old is a first year All Star. Kling is hitting .264/.371/.538 this season, with 18 homers, 66 RBI, and 52 runs scored. He is a career .267/.369/.528/.897 hitter, with 115 homeruns, 402 RBI, and 380 runs scored.

Starting Pitchers:

With the great Segundo Narbaiza injured and unable to attend the All Star game, some large shoes need to be filled by the remaining NL pitchers. Who can step up to fill them? Pittsburgh's Andreas Fajardo has burst onto the scene in impressive fashion. The 26 year old rookie makes his first appearance in the All Star game. Fajardo has posted a sparkling 12-3 record this season, leading the league in wins. His ERA is an impressive 2.66, good for third in the league. His 111 strikeouts are tied for second in the league. For his career, Fajardo is 14-3 with a 2.65 ERA, and 131 strikeouts in 163 innings pitched.

Fajardo is not Pittsburgh's only starting pitcher to make the All Star team. 29 year old southpaw Jay Marrone is the second, and he makes his first All Star team. Marrone is 11-2(tied for second in the league in wins), with a 4.53 ERA, and 89 strikeouts in 111 1/3 innings pitched. For his career, Marrone is 51-24, with a 4.42 ERA, and 571 strikeouts in 649 innings pitched.

Daniel Malone is Pittsburgh's third starting pitcher on the All Star team. This is the first All Star team for the 31 year old. Malone has gone 10-4 this year, with a 4.30 ERA, and an 80/27 K/BB ratio in 111 innings pitched. Malone is a career 86-59 pitcher, with a 4.40 ERA, and a 919/276 K/BB ratio in 1284 1/3 innings pitched.

Another challenger to fill Narbaiza's shoes is another young pitcher. Los Angeles' Francisco Savala is 23 years old and another first time All Star. Savala has gone 7-1 with a league leading 1.99 ERA this season, and a sickening 90/12 K/BB ratio in 81 1/3 innings pitched. For his career, Savala is 14-8, with a 3.70 ERA, and 205 strikeouts in 214 innings pitched.

Los Angeles also has more than one starting pitcher to represent them. 25 year old Robert Jones is a first time All Star. Jones is 11-5(tied for second in the league in wins), with a 3.16 ERA, and 85 strikeouts in 133 2/3 innings pitched. For his career, Jones is 47-32, with a 3.90 ERA, and 500 strikeouts in 733 innings pitched.

San Diego's Casey Greene makes his first All Star team at the age of 28. Greene is 10-3 this season, with a 2.87 ERA, and an 88/13 K/BB ratio in 122 1/2 innings pitched. For his career, Greene is 40-18, with a 3.36 ERA, and a 331/62 K/BB ratio in 523 innings pitched.

Veteran San Jose starter Justo Rubino makes his second All Star appearance at the age of 34. He was also an All Star two years ago, when he went 16-9, with a 5.17 ERA, and 167 strikeouts. This season, Rubino is 9-5, with a 4.34 ERA, and 97 strikeouts in 110 innings pitched. Rubino is a career 67-55 pitcher, with a 4.63 ERA, and 883 strikeouts in 1020 2/3 innings pitched.

Relief Pitchers:

San Jose's Clinton Blanton is a first time All Star at the age of 24. Blanton has made 29 appearances this season, a 5-2 record, 1 save, and a 2.34 ERA. He has pitched 42 1/3 innings and has a 29/13 K/BB ratio. For his career, the young reliever has 75 appearances, an 11-5 record, 9 saves, a 2.41 ERA, and a 90/27 K/BB ratio in 123 1/3 innings pitched.

Los Angeles's Mark McAnulty makes his first All Star appearance at the age of 27. McAnulty has made 29 appearances this season, has a record of 3-3, 15 saves, and a 1.95 ERA. He's struck out 16 batters in 27 2/3 innings pitched. McAnulty has made 252 career appearances, with a record of 14-21, 52 saves, an ERA of 5.98, and 113 strikeouts in 256 innings pitched.

Completing the National League roster is Buffalo closer Asdrubal Rodrigues. This is the third All Star appearance for the 35 year old reliever. Rodrigues has made 36 appearances this season, with a record of 0-1, and a league leading 17 saves. He has posted an ERA of 3.44, and has a 27/12 K/BB ratio in 34 innings pitched. Rodrigues has 744 career appearances, with a record of 47-44, and 205 saves. He has a career ERA of 2.97, and a 762/244 K/BB ratio in 827 innings pitched.

July 4th, 2082: The All Star Game

On a scorching hot, 104 degree Independence Day in Tucson, Arizona, the National League All-Stars prevailed 7-3 over the American League All-Stars. After the game started with two scoreless innings for both teams, Denver's Asbel Fuentez got the American League on the board with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, scoring Atlanta's Wayne Koeller. In the fifth inning, San Diego's Gregorio Ruiz reached on an infield single, and the next batter, Buffalo's John Kling, ripped a two run homerun off of Miami's Christian Hokusai to give the National League a 2-1 lead.

The National League broke the game open in the sixth inning. San Diego's Clayton Threatt delivered a run scoring single to make it 3-1. Harrisburg's Samuel Mack came through with a run scoring double to make it 4-1. Los Angeles' Urbano Belmonte drove in a run with a base hit to make it 5-1. Finally, Sacramento's Nestor Adrover capped the five run inning with a pinch hit two run single, putting the National League up 7-1. The American League managed a too little, too late rally in the eighth inning, getting a sacrifice fly from Miami's Roy Springs and a pinch hit RBI single from Washington's Manuel Madrid.

How did Denver's group of All Stars fare? Asbel Fuentez delivered a hit, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Lee Chappel was 1 for 3. Ellis Bolling, Alexis Vazquez, and Russell Thomas went a combined 0 for 7. On the pitching side, Kenny Pillsbury played a prominent role in the National League's outburst of runs in the sixth inning, surrendering 3 hits and 3 runs in 1/3 of an inning. He did strike out a batter. Ray Lockridge pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit. James Virgen tossed 2 scoreless innings, with 2 strikeouts.

Remembering the Hall of Famers: LF Josias Fernandez

Josias Fernandez:

With the first overall selection of the 2016 draft, Tucson selected Josias Fernandez, who leaped right into the major leagues without spending a day in the minors. His numbers weren't great, but then again, for a guy who was only 19 at the start of the year, they weren't really that bad, either. As Fernandez improved over the next several seasons, so did the Diamondbacks. In his first two seasons, they finished in last place, losing 94 and 98 games, respectively. In his third season, they got out of last place, and finished third with a record of 75-87. In his fourth season, Tucson finished in second place and managed to squeak over .500, winning 82 games. In the next two seasons, however, Tucson slumped. Despite Fernandez making his first two All Star games, the Diamondbacks slipped back under .500, and won only 75 and 78 games in 2020 and 2021.

Fernandez left as a free agent and elected to sign with a Nashville team that seemed to be on the rise. After a last place finish in 2019, Nashville had managed to win 82 and 80 games in the two seasons after that. Could the acquisition of Fernandez put them over the top? Yes. As Fernandez ripped 37 homeruns(a career high at the time), Nashville won one of the most exciting pennant races of all time. Interestingly, Fernandez's previous team, Tucson, played an important role in that race. The loss of Fernandez, and other free agents, caused the Diamondbacks to sink to the bottom of the league, losing 108 games. Every other team in the American League took advantage of this. In Tucson's own division, Kansas City, Grand Rapids, and Memphis battled down to the wire, with the Royals beating out the other two by one game, finishing with a record of 82-80. In the Southeast, every team finished over .500, with Nashville winning the division with a record of 89-73. Last place Atlanta won 86 games. Part of the reason that Nashville won out was the fact that they went a whopping 20-3 against the hapless Diamondbacks. No other team dominated Tucson as much. The Predators then swept Kansas City in the ALCS, before falling to Pittsburgh in the World Series.

Nashville cruised to the World Series again in 2023, but fell once more to Pittsburgh. Despite a Silver Slugger season from Fernandez in 2024, Nashville fell in the ALCS to Grand Rapids. And then, in 2025, the Predators won their first World Series in 23 years, pounding the strong pitching of Pittsburgh in a 4 games to 1 victory. In 2026, despite a tremendous postseason effort from Fernandez, Nashville was swept in the World Series by Los Angeles. Fernandez jumped ship after that, and headed to division rival, Atlanta. Despite many strong seasons, Fernandez failed to turn Atlanta into a consistent winner, and after six seasons, he headed to then divisonal power, Knoxville, to finish up his career. The 79ers made the postseason in 2033, but, coincidentally enough, fell to Fernandez's original team, Tucson, in the ALCS.

Throughout his career, Josias Fernandez was a dangerous homerun hitter, consistently belting 30+ roundtrippers per year. At times, he was a capable base-stealing threat, twice reaching 40 steals in a season. His batting average skills came and went, as he had some very good seasons and a lot of more average seasons. At his peak, his contact ability was superb. He combined all of those offensive abilities with perhaps being the greatest defensive left fielder ever. Fernandez was just one of two players to ever win as many as 6 Gold Glove awards in Left Field.

At the time of his retirement, Fernandez ranked 4th all time on the career hit list, tied for 18th in homeruns, 8th in RBI, 1st in triples, 5th in runs scored, and 18th in stolen bases. He remains the all time leader in triples today, and sits 17th in hits and 15th in runs scored. I would imagine that he has a good chance to hold onto that triples record for a long, long time. At the start of the 2082 season, only two players in the top 25 were active, and both are aged players unlikely to hit many more triples- and neither were particularly close to begin with.

Fernandez's stats:

Buentello Returns From DL, Myatt Sent Down
7/5/2082
Al Vincent
Staff Writer

Starting pitcher George Buentello was activated from the disabled list today, and left-hander James Myatt, who was called up to replace Buentello when he got injured, was sent down to AAA. Buentello had strained an elbow ligament in a start on May 16. Myatt made six starts in place of Buentello and went 2-2 with a 6.69 ERA. His best start was a complete game victory against Kansas City, in which he allowed 8 hits and 3 runs, while striking out and walking 3 batters apiece. Manager John Wilkerson said that while it was clear that Myatt still needed to improve in several areas, he was "glad that he had gotten a chance to see Myatt in an extended look in the big leagues" and that the 26 year old Myatt definitely had a future in the big leagues.
