The 30 year old tore up his knee while running the bases against the Browns. Schange had hitting .332 with a homer and 27 rbi's this season and had just come off of a 5-hit game the previous day. With Schang done for the year the A's hopes of repeating as American League Pennant winner will rest on 20 year old Lena Styles doing the job behind the plate. The youngster was on a tear in his first week as the starter, in his first 6 games since Schang went down Styles had 3 hits in 3 of the contests. For the season Styles is batting .311 with 10 rbi's. Edd Roush of the White Sox and Frankie Frisch of Brooklyn each had 25 game hitting streaks snapped in June. The major league record is 37 straight games with a hit set by Eddie Collins of the Athletics in 1913. JULY 2, 1920 SULLIVAN WINS US OPEN IN A PLAYOFF American Amateur Ryan Sullivan won the United States Open Golf Tournament but he needed two extra holes to do so. Sullivan and Jerry xTravers finished Sunday's final round tied with identical -13 scores. They each parred the opening playoff hole but when xTravers bogeyed the second hole Sullivan earned the championship with a par. For xTravers it nearly marked his second straight Open victory. He won the event last year by 3 strokes over Tommy xArmour. The event was held at Inverness Country Club in Toledo. In real life the winner was British Amateur Ted Ray, who was best known for participating in a playoff for the 1913 US Open Championship with Harry Vardon and the winner Francis Ouimet, which was the subject of a Disney movie entitled, "The Greatest Game Ever Played". Code:

The win improves Dempsey's record to 37-1 while Wills suffers just the second loss of his career in 45 professional bouts. The 25 year old Dempsey started slowly but began to carry the fight in the 4th round. He tagged the 31 year old Wills with a couple of strong shots to the body to close out the 6th round. Those blows seemed to injure the champ and Wills looked a little tenative to start the 7th. Dempsey, on the other hand, clearly looked as if he was going in for the kill. Two tremendous lefts to the body followed by a nice uppercut had Wills folding like an according less than a minute into the 7th round. Wills beat the count but looked shaken as Dempsey scored a right cross and a combination of blows to the head and body over the next 30 seconds that floored Wills for the second time. For a moment it looked as if Wills was done as he lurched to his feet at the count of six only to stumble back down on one knee again. He did get up just as the referee counted 9 but was clearly still hazy when Dempsey stepped in and put him down for the count with another huge uppercut. Dempsey has won two of the three matches between the two fighters and hinted after the bout there would not be a 4th bout, telling reporters "I think after tonight I have nothing left to prove against him." JULY 30, 1920 KIRKWOOD WINS BRITISH OPEN Joe xKirkwood Sr. shot a 5 under par 67 on the final day to win the 1920 British Open by 4 strokes over Gabriel Turner. With the wind and thick rough at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club playing havoc, Kirkwood and Turner were the only golfers under par entering Sunday's play. The wind calmed considerably on Sunday and as a result a number of rounds in the sixties were carded. In real life the event was won by Scottish Amateur George Duncan. Duncan finished seventh in this replay. It was the first British Open held since 1914 because of World War I. Code:

The extra, non-baseball, news items add a bit of perspective to your replays that makes it easier to jump into the time period with you.
I like it! ![]()

By the way, now I'm wondering what will happen to some of my favorite boxers of all time while the baseball history plays itself out.

Great. thanks for reading. Keep in mind it is still 1920 but I started the boxing back in about 1910 so if there are any boxers from that era you want some info on just let me know.

Norfolk had knocked down McTigue twice and even with 3 penalty points still held a huge lead on the challenger at the time of the DQ. It was just the second loss of Norfolk's career. McTigue, a 28 year old from Ireland, is 33-2-1 in his career. AUGUST 22, 1920 HUTCHINSON WINS PGA IN A PLAYOFF For the second time this year a major golf tournament required extra holes to determine a winner. In the PGA Championship at Flossmoor, Illinois, Jock xHutchinson beat Morgan Jackson on the first playoff hole to claim victory. Earlier in the summer Ryan Sullivan beat Jerry xTravers in a playoff to win the US Open. Speaking of Travers, he capped an outstanding year with his third straight top 10 appearance in a major. After finishing second at the US Open and finishing 5th in the British Open, Travers tied for sixth at Flossmoor. Hutchinson won the tournament with back to back 5-under par 66's on Friday and Saturday. Only second place finisher Jackson, with a 64 on Saturday managed to score lower in any 18 holes of the tournament. Hutchinson also won the 1920 PGA in real life. It was a match play event at that time and he beat Doug Edgar in the final. Hutchinson, a native of nearby Glenview, Illinois, was not even supposed to be in the field for the event but a couple of late cancellations allowed him into the event. He was a terror in the 4 rounds leading up to the final. Hutchinson defeated Eddie Loos and Laurie Ayton by identical 5 and 3 scores; Louis Tellier, 6 and 5; and downed Harry Hampton in the semifinals, 4 and 3. Hutchison then had a battle, escaping Douglas Edgar with a 1-up decision in the 36-hole finale. Code:

SEPTEMBER 1, 1920
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL - AUGUST RECAP RED SOX FINALLY CATCH ATHLETICS The Boston Red Sox have been chasing the Philadelphia Athletics for top spot in the American League all season. Thanks to a 7 game winning streak to close out the month of August the Red Sox finally passed the A's. Boston, which last held sole possession of first place in mid-May now sits 2 games ahead of Philadelphia with 1 month remaining in the season. A 3 game showdown between the 2 clubs in Boston Septemeber 23-25 could well decide the pennant. Boston and Philadelphia rank 1-2 in the American League in both most runs scored and fewest runs allowed with the Red Sox holding a slight edge in both categories. Key players for the Red Sox have been first baseman Babe Ruth (.333,34,106), outfielders Tris Speaker (.324,3,72) and Harry Hooper (.324,15,109) along with second baseman Larry Gardner (.307,5,53). On the mound Boston has relied on the pitching of Sailor Stroud (19-6, 3.24) and Carl Mays (18-7, 2.76). The A's rotation is led by Herb Pennock (17-4, 3.50), Jesse Haines (15-11, 4.08) and Dixie Walker (14-13, 3.95). Offensively, the leaders are outfielders Joe Jackson (.374,11,107) and Frank Schulte (.310,3,29) along with infielders Whitey Witt (.330,3,72), Eddie Collins (.324,3,77) and Buck Weaver (.319,4,76). The big surprise for Philadelphia has been the play of rookie catcher Lena Styles (.300,1,34) who has played like a veteran since being forced into the lineup with the season-ending injury suffered by Wally Schang. NATIONAL LEAGUE RACE STILL WIDE OPEN The Pittsburgh Pirates have a 2 game lead on the defending champion New York Giants in the National League but with a month to go in the season there are still 4 teams in the thick of the race. The Bucs and Giants ended the month by splitting the first two of a 4-game series in Pittsburgh. The two clubs will meet the next two days in Pittsburgh and then renew acquintances with a 3 game set at the Polo Grounds in the middle of the month. Those 5 games may go a long ways towards determining the National League champion. Code:

Second baseman Heinie Groh is likely done for the season after suffering a dislocated shoulder in a game on August 25. Groh was hitting .348 with 3 Hr and 42 rbi's in 82 games. Five hit games are rare, and even rarer for pitchers. However, Detroit Tiger starter Eddie Cicotte went 5-for-5 at the plate in a 12-2 victory over the Yankees. all 5 of his hits were singles. Cicotte is batting .224 on the season. On the mound he has a 13-14 record with a 3.97 era. Tris Speaker of the Boston Red Sox joined the 2000 hit club with a double in a 9-4 win over Cleveland on August 20th. He his hitting .324 with 3 homers and 72 rbi's this season. SEPTEMBER 8, 1920 NHL BULLDOGS MOVING TO HAMILTON After just one troubled season the National Hockey League has decided to relocate the Quebec Bulldogs franchise to Hamilton, Ontario. The Abso Pure Ice Company has purchased the team and all of it's players incuding star Joe Malone. The team will play at the new indoor Barton Street Arena and will be known as the Hamilton Tigers. The club, which won just 4 of 24 games last season, was an original member of the NHL but was unable to ice a team in the first two seasons. SEPTEMBER 14, 1920 RUTH HITS HR #38 AS RED SOX STRETCH LEAD Babe Ruth hit his 38th homer of the season to move within 1 of his own major league record in helping the Boston Red Sox past the St Louis Browns 7-4. Prior to last year when Ruth hit 39 the major league record was 25 homers which Buck Freeman accomplished in 1899. Post-1901 the top mark prior to Ruth was the 24 dingers hit by Gavvy Cravath in 1913. The Red Sox have won only 6 of their last 11 but it was enough to stretch their lead atop the American League to 5 games on Philadelphia. The Athletics have been in a terrible slump, dropping 9 out 13 and suffering all those losses against the bottom 4 teams in the league. Philadelphia's only hope for a pennant now will rest on sweeping the Red Sox at Fenway when the two clubs play a 3 game series September 23-25. SEPTEMBER 16, 1920 RUTH GETS HOMER #40 IN DRAMATIC STYLE Babe Ruth broke his own single season major league home run record with 2 round-trippers in Boston's 11-7 victory over the Browns in 13 innings at St Louis. Ruth tied the mark of 39 that he set last year by knocking a solo shot off of Browns starter Erskine Mayer in the third inning. He then picked a very dramatic moment to break the record - bases loaded with two out in a tie game in the 13th inning. Ruth took St Louis reliever Bill Fincher deep for the record-setting shot. The win allowed the Red Sox to stretch their lead on second place Philadelphia to 5 and a half games in the American League pennant race. GIANTS-BUCS DEADLOCKED HEADING INTO CRUCIAL SERIES The next 3 games between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Giants could well decided the National League pennant. The two clubs will meet for the next 3 days at the Polo Grounds with just percentage points seperating them atop the standings. Code:

I've always liked these. I'll have to try one myself sometime. Has this been as much fun as the one you started in 1946? Where did you get the golfers and who rated them?

As for the golfers, I rated them myself based on what I read on a number of sites and books. Unfortunately I can not find enough golfers from the era. I only have about 50 that I had a decent amount of info to be able to rate so there will be plenty of fictional golfers making appearances on the leaderboards.

PIRATES STRIKE FIRST IN SHOWDOWN SERIES Cacther Cliff Lee was the unlikely hero as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Giants 5-2 in the opener of their 3 game series at the Polo Grounds. The victory gives the Pirates a 1 game lead over New York atop the National League standings. Lee (.341,3,30) had just 1 homer in 70 games entering the contest. After New York touched up Pirates starter Jimmy Ring(14-14, 3.70) for a run in the bottom of the first, Lee evened things with a solo homer with 2 out in the second inning. Lee would hit another solo homer in the fourth inning off of Giants starter Lee Meadows (12-14, 4.33). Meadows would also give up a solo shot to Toby Boeckel (.304,3,46) in the 4th as the Pirates took a 3-run lead. Lee would not be content with just the two homers on the day as he added a triple in the 6th and would score to make it 4-1 Pirates at the time. The Giants will look to pull even today as Harry Kane (12-7, 3.12) takes the hill against Eddie Stack (2-7, 5.03) for Pittsburgh. SEPTEMBER 18, 1920 PIRATES BEAT GIANTS AGAIN The Pittsburgh Pirates increased their lead atop the National League to two games over the New York Giants after the Bucs won 6-4 at the Polo Grounds. Amos Strunk (.322,4,74) homered and drove in 3 runs to lead Pittsburgh. New York scored all of their runs in the first two innings before Pirates starter Eddie Stack (3-7, 5.09) and reliever Johnny Meador (3-5, 3.52) combined to shut the door the rest of the way. In the American League Boston lost to Detroit for the second straight game while the Philadelphia Athletics beat St Louis in each of the last two days. The result is the A's have moved to within 3.5 games of first place Boston.

OOTP and Title Bout Championship Boxing can be found here at OOTPdevelopments. Total Pro Golf, Total College Basketball and DDS: Pro Basketball are available at Wolverine Studios http://www.wolverinestudios.com/ I believe a new version of the golf game is slated to come out soon. Indy 500 and Nascar for DOS are freeware available here: http://tmsportsgames.com/ I am not sure where you can get APBA hockey but I got all the season disks here: http://sandman.kicks-ass.net/~goal/NewSeasonDisks.html Second and Ten football is available here : http://www.roogames.co.uk/ The freeware college football excel game called Quick Play football is available here: http://www.tabletop-sports.com/ I had considered using Arlie Rahn's great Bowl Bound college football game instead but because I was using Second and Ten for the Pro game I decided it was easiest to just use the quick play college game. I do reccomend Arlie's game though. It is very good and can be found here: http://www.greydogsoftware.com/home.php

GIANTS AVOID SWEEP: BACK TO WITHIN 1 GAME Thanks to a 4-hit complete game from Rosy Ryan (12-8, 3.12), the New York Giants managed to salvage one game from their 3 game showdown with Pittsburgh for top spot in the National League. Pittsburgh looked to be in good shape entering the game, riding a 2 game winning streak over the Giants and with ace Burleigh Grimes (21-11, 3.13) on the hill. However, the Giants would prevail 5-2 although they appeared to be in big trouble early as the visiting Pirates started fast. Things looked good for the Bucs when Amos Strunk (.321,4,74) doubled and Carson Bigbee (.290,4,60) tripled in the top of the first inning. Tony Boeckel (.303,3,47) added a single in the first frame to plate Bigbee and give Pittsburgh a quick 2-0 lead. However, Giants starter Ryan would settle down and allow just 1 Pittsburgh hit the rest of the way. The Giants would tie the game in the 7th thanks in part to an rbi triple off the bat of Happy Felsch (.273,11,102) and would put things away in the 8th when Ross Youngs (.330,3,66) would drive in a pair of runs. RUTH'S HOMER HELPS BOSOX ALL BUT PUT AWAY A'S Babe Ruth (.346,42,124) hit his 42nd homer of the season as the Boston Red Sox thumped visiting Philadelphia 8-3 in American League action. The win gives Boston a commanding 4 and a half game lead on the A's in the pennant race. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh leads New York by a game and a half atop the National League standings. Both clubs were idle yesterday. The Giants chances suffered a serious blow two days ago when outfielder Steve Evans (.309,2,57) went down with a strained thigh muscle. Word today is he could be sidelined for the rest of the regular season. GESSLER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT Chicago White Sox outfielder Doc Gessler (.255,1,55) has confirmed this will be his final season. The 39 year old is one of just 31 players to have at least 2000 career hits. He won a pair of gold gloves in his 18 year career that included stops in Detroit, Boston and Cincinnati as well as with the White Sox.

RED SOX POUND ATHLETICS 10-3 Carl Mays (21-9, 2.74) allowed just 7 hits on the mound and chipped in with 3 at the plate as the Boston Red Sox hammered Philadelphia 10-3. Tris Speaker (.333,3,83) also had 3 hits for the Red Sox while fellow outfielder Harry Hooper (.321,15,121) drove in 3 runs. The win lowers the Red Sox magic number for clinching at least a tie for the American League pennant to 1. In the National League Pittsburgh lost 7-4 at home to St Louis allowing the idle New York Giants to creep to within 1 game of the first place Bucs.

Sorry for the long delay but I am finally ready to pick this dynasty back up. I had been busy with helping to test the new Total Pro Golf 2 game from Wolverine Studios which is now playing a key role in this dynasty. I am also cross posting this dynasty at the Wolverine messageboard where I will feature a little deeper emphasis on the golf portion of the replay. If you have not yet tried out the demo for TPG2 I urge you to do so. It is an outstanding game with a very dedicated mod community.
As for this replay you can pretty much ignore any of the golf articles I added prior to this post as I have replayed the 1920 golf season using TPG2. Details on it can be found. SEPTEMBER 26, 1920 RED SOX CLINCH WITH CONVINCING WIN The Boston Red Sox clinched the American League pennant as they wrapped up a 3 game sweep of the second place Philadelphia Athletics with a 14-5 victory at Fenway. Harry Hooper (.326,16,128) had 4 hits including a grand slam and drove in 7 runs in the win. In the National League the Pirates and Giants both lost so Pittsburgh remains 1 game ahead of New York. Here is the remaining schedule for the two National League Pennant Contenders PITTSBURGH (2H, 3A) Sep 26,27 at Cin Oct 1,2 vs Cin Oct 3 at Chn NEW YORK (4 H, 1A) Sep 26 at Bkn Sep 30, Oct 1,2 vs Bkn Oct 3 vs Phi SEPTEMBER 26, 1920 SEPTEMBER GOLF ROUND-UP Here are the results from the September events on the PGA Tour. PORTLAND OPEN - Sept 6-9 : Portland Golf Club Emmett xFrench and Bobby xJones completed 72 holes of golf with identical scores of 9 under par to lead the tournament. Experience would win out as the 43 year old xFrench would best the 20 year old xJones in a playoff. LOS ANGELES OPEN - Sept 13-17 : Riviera Country Club The Los Angeles Open draws plenty of big names as the event offers the second biggest purse on the tour (behind only the North and South Open). Tommy xArmour would take home the winners cheque of $1,259 after posting a 6 stroke victory over Johnny xGolden. Young Bobby xJones would have another solid week as he finished tied for 7th. Walter xHagen's streak of 7 consecutive top 10 finishes came to an end but he still collected a decent paycheque by tying for 13th. LONG BEACH OPEN - Sept 20-23 : Meadowlark Golf Course Many of the big names elected to skip this tournament which is one of the smaller stops on the tour. Those who did turn out to watch witnessed a thrilling finish that needed a playoff to determine a winner. Relative unknown Paul Sims denied Tommy xArmour a second straight win by beating the Scotsman in extra holes. Another strong round for Bobby xJones as he tied for 5th. In Europe, Harry xVardon won two of the 3 September events on the European PGA Tour. xVardon has now won 4 events this year after taking the Alps Championship and the Glasgow Open. In between xVardon's victories, Fred xHerd won the Dublin Open. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1920 PGA SEASON WINDING DOWN With just 4 stops remaining on the PGA Tour, including this weekend in San Diego for the California Open, it appears that Tommy xArmour has clinched the top money winner honours. The 27 year old native of Scotland has won $4,826 so far this season including victories at the Los Angeles and Shawnee Opens. xArmour is nearly $1,000 ahead of James xWest, who is number two on the list. Here are the top 10 money winners this season and the list of winners for each event: Code:

FRIDAY OCTOBER 1, 1920 BUCS AND GIANTS DOWN TO WIRE The Pittsburgh Pirates remain 1 game ahead of the defending champion New York Giants atop the National League standings after the Giants rallied to beat Brooklyn yesterday. New York trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the ninth but a 2-out, 2-run single off the bat of Happy Felsch (.274,11,105) gave the Giants the victory. New York hosts Brooklyn today and tomorrow before wrapping up their season at home against Philadelphia on Sunday. The Pirates host Cincinnati the next two days before concluding the season in Chicago on Sunday. Code:

Lee Meadows (14-15, 4.17) threw a complete game shutout as the Giants blanked Brooklyn 2-0 at the Polo Grounds while in Pittsburgh the Pirates fell 6-3 to Cincinnati. The loss was especially tough for the Pirates who had their ace Burleigh Grimes (21-13, 3.29) on the hill. It was Grimes first loss in 7 starts. Former Pirate Max Carey (2.94,1,72) along with Hank Severeid (.286,1,43) led the way for Cincinnati with 3 hits and 2 rbi's each. Pittsburgh managed just 5 hits off of Hod Eller (19-15, 2.97). In other baseball news today Cardinals pitcher Babe Adams (20-16, 3.67) won the 200th game of his career. The 38 year old Adams beat the Cubs 5-2 to run his career record to 200-183. He becomes the 19th player to reach the 200 win mark. The win keeps the Cardinals slim playoff hopes alive. St Louis has won 11 straight games and now trail Pittsburgh and the Giants by 2 games with two to play. Code:
