POLO GROUNDS NO HELP TO GIANTS: FALL BEHIND 3-0

A change of venue from Fenway Park to the Polo Grounds did nothing to slow the Boston bats as the Red Sox pounded out 11 hits in a 10-5 victory. The win gives Boston a 3 games to none lead in the best-of-seven World Series.

For the first time in the series New York did not allow Babe Ruth to homer but the Red Sox slugger hit two doubles and drove in another run - his 9th rbi of the series. Cozy Dolan (.301,1,53) had 3 rbi's to lead the Boston offense. Happy Felsch (2.73,11,106) and Earl Smith (.318,7,81) each had two hits for New York.

Sailor Stroud (21-9, 2.98) went the distance for Boston to earn the win. Sam Jones (10-8, 3.06) took the loss.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 10, 1920
RED SOX COMPLETE WORLD SERIES SWEEP

Like the other three games this one was never close as Boston pounded New York 11-5 to win the World Series in the minimum 4 games. To say the Red Sox dominated the series would be a huge understatement. Boston outscored the Giants 46-15 and outhit them 55-31.

Tris Speaker went 3-for-5 with 5 rbi's to lead Bosto while Babe Ruth scored 5 of the Red Sox 11 runs. The Giants pitchers walked Ruth 4 times in the game. Ross Youngs (.332,3,73) came up with the Giants first homerun of the series.

Lynn Brenton got his second win of the series while Waite Hoyt was tagged with the loss.

Babe Ruth of the Red Sox was named the World Series MVP. In 4 games Ruth hit .692 (9-for-13) with 3 homers, 9 rbi's and 13 runs scored. He was walked 7 times and had an on base percentage of .800. Tris Speaker, who hit .474 with 9 rbi's, also received consideration.

xARMOUR WINS SACRAMENTO OPEN

Tommy xArmour virtually clinched his standing atop the PGA money winners list with his third tournament win of the season. xArmour is also in contention to finish the year as the World's Number one ranked golfer after winning the Sacramento Open.

England's Harry xVardon is also making a serious run at the World Number one spot. xVardon won again on the European tour, his third straight victory and 4 in the last 5 tournaments. Presently, Scotland's Willie xMacFarlane is ranked number one in the world with xArmour, xVardon and Fred xHerd battling it out for second.

SAN FRANCISCO LANDS TOP COLLEGE HOOPS RECRUIT

Winning the national championship last spring has paid off additional dividends for the University of San Francisco college basketball team. The school has announced that the nation's top ranked recruit has agreed to attend USF next year. Corey James is a high school senior small forward from Carsonville, Michigan.

Meanwhile, the second ranked recruit, 6'10" power forward Eric Perkins has agreed to attend North Carolina. UCLA had another strong recruiting class landing the 3rd and 5th ranked recruits. The Bruins stole Deep Run, North Carolina PG Charlie Pebbles right out from under the Wolfpack and also added small forward Eric Jeffries, who hails from Troy, Montana.

I just wanted to say that I've always been amazed by the amount of depth your dynasties have, and by your dedication to them. I've thought about trying to write dynasties before, but I usually burn out before I even get started. I don't know how you do it, but I'm glad that you do.

MLB HANDS OUT END OF SEASON AWARDS

Major League Baseball handed out it's postseason hardware this week and it comes as no surprise that a pair of Boston Red Sox captured the American League's two main awards. Babe Ruth, who hit a record 42 homeruns, was named the Junior Circuit's MVP while teammate Carl Mays, who was 22-9, was named the loop's top hurler.

Here is the complete list of award winners

SATURDAY OCTOBER 30, 1920
PLENTY OF TRADES AT MLB MEETINGS

Major League Baseball held it's end of season meetings and any time you get 16 general managers together you are bound to get some trade action. This time was no different as a total of 15 deals were consumated. The highlights include:

The biggest surprise was the New York Giants decision to send 28 year old pitcher Sam Jones (10-8, 3.06) to the Chicago Cubs for veteran infielder Art Fletcher (.213,0,4). The 36 year old Fletcher was a gold glove winner at third base in 1919 but missed most of 1920 with an injury.

The Cubs also dealt disgruntled 29 year old outfielder Tim Hendryx (.299,0,73) to Brooklyn in exchange for minor league catcher Wickey McAvoy (.259,5,36 at AAA). Hendryx had made it clear he did not want to return to Wrigley but the Cubs should have been able to get more for him.

Brooklyn also picked up first baseman George 'Highpockets' Kelly (.314,7,59) from Detroit for pitcher Leon Cadore (12-20, 3.86).

The Yankees continued their rebuilding by sending 36 year old first baseman Ben Houser (.222,7,48) to the St Louis Browns in exchange for 29 year old pitcher Sherry Smith (15-15, 3.09). The Browns also added outfielder Clyde Milan (.311,3,29) from Washington in exchange for 29 year old minor league hurler Scott Perry (15-8, 1.89 at AAA Toledo).

NOVEMBER 8, 1920
EASY VICTORY IN TORONTO FOR WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP

Heavyweight Champ Jack Dempsey had no trouble defending his title against Canadian Champion Johnny Gillis, even in the challenger's own backyard. Dempsey travelled to Toronto to face Gillis, who entered the bout with a perfect 16-0 record. When it was all said and done the World Champion knocked out the 20 year old challenger in the 10th round improving his record to 38-1.

ANOTHER DISQUALIFICTION IN LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT TITLE BOUT
Irishman Mike McTigue won the World Lightheavyweight Title in the summer by disqualifiction of his opponent Kid Norfolk. He would lose the title the same way last week when he was disqualified in his bout with Fay Keiser. Keiser (33-4-2), a 28 year old from Greenwich, Ohio, briefly held the crown last year as well.

REDS DEAL HURLERS LUQUE AND ELLER

In one day the Cincinnati Reds gave up two pitchers who made a combined 67 starts last season. First the Reds sent pitcher Dolf Luque to the Washington Senators in exchange for outfielder Tilly Walker. Then a short time later the Reds released the news that 19 game winner Hod Eller had been dispatched to the Boston Red Sox for infielder Ray Grimes.

Luque,30, was 12-10 with a 3.55 era for the Reds last season. He spent just the one year in Cincinnati after being acquired by the Reds from Brooklyn in spring training. Luque likely will fill the number two spot in the rotation for Washington behind veteran Walter Johnson.

The 32 year old Walker had spent his entire 10 year major league career with Washington. He finsihed third in the American League with 20 homers last season despite playing in just 105 games. Walker batted .307 with 73 rbi's. Walker should fit in nicely as the Reds cleanup hitter as only Tex McDonald, with 14, and Jack Fournier, with 10, hit double digits in home runs last year.

The Eller move came as a big surprise. Eller (19-15, 2.97) won 19 games for the second straight season and led the major leagues in strikeouts. With 20 game winners Carl Mays and Sailor Stroud already in the rotation the Red Sox should be unstoppable next year.

Grimes, a 27 year old minor league infielder, hit .240 at AA Scranton last season. However, he is considered to be on the verge of becoming a solid major leaguer. With Babe Ruth ahead of him in Boston there was no way Grimes would make the Red Sox as a first baseman. Cincinnati can certainly use his bat. The big question mark in Cincinnati now is where will they find four or five quality starting pitchers?

BOXING CHAMPS BY DIVISION

HEAVYWEIGHT : Jack Dempsey 38-1
Regained title with knockout of Harry Wills in summer.

LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT : Fay Keiser 33-4-2
Earned title when champ Mike McTigue was disqualified in their November bout.

MIDDLEWEIGHT : Jeff Smith (40-6-1)
29 year old New York City native claimed title with TKO of Silent Martin in February. He made successful defenses in May against George Brown (44-10-3), Harry Greb (37-3-2) and Bryan Downey (31-6).

WELTERWEIGHT : Jimmy Fryer (41-9-3)
With no clear dominant fighter in this division the title changed hands 4 times in 1920. Aging Art Magirl had it briefly for the third time in his career before losing to Australian Tommy Uren, who in turn lost to Fryer.

LIGHTWEIGHT : Jimmy Dundee (25-5-3)
Dundee is just holding the title until Benny Leonard gets another shot. Leonard (36-2) was upset by Rocky Kansas last year in what should have been an easy title defense. Leonard regained the belt in January with an unanimous decision over Mexican Joe Rivers but lost by disqualification to Joe Welling in his first defense. Dundee beat Welling to claim the title but Leonard is far and away the best fighter in this division at the moment.

CALIFORNIA WINS ROSE BOWL

The University of California completed a perfect season by beating Notre Dame 40-13 in the Rose Bowl. The win completes 10-0 season for the Bears and earns them the unofficial National Championship. In real life California blanked Ohio State 28-0. Notre Dame got the nod over Ohio State in the sim because the Irish went 9-1 prior to the Bowl game while Ohio State ended the season 5-2.

In the only other bowl game Centre College of Kentucky beat Texas A&M 27-24 in the Fort Worth Classic. 1921 would be the only year the Fort Worth Classic was held. In real life Centre College beat Texas Christian 63-7.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL RANKINGS

As the conference schedules swing into high gear here are College Basketball's Top 20 teams.

1- Yale (15-1)
2- Texas A&M (14-0)
3- Kentucky (12-0)
4- Oklahoma A&M (12-3)
5- Georgia (13-0)
6- Kansas (12-1)
7- San Francisco (12-2)
8- North Carolina (10-4)
9- UCLA (10-1)
10- Illinois (11-2)
11- New York Univ (11-2)
12- Bradley (13-1)
13- Holy Cross (12-5)
14- Maryland (12-2)
15- Indiana (11-2)
16- Tennessee (11-3)
17- Princeton (11-3)
18- Wichita State (12-2)
19- Mississippi (11-2)
20- Michigan (10-2)

COLLEGE HOOP NOTES: Sam Hightower, who led San Francisco to the National Championship a year ago, is considered to be one of the front-runners for the Norton Award. Other's in contention for College Basketball's Player of the Year award are Brian Hawkins of USC, Dwayne Taylor of Maryland, Kentucky's Marcel Jones and Michael McMaster of Texas A&M.

Bradley suffered it's first loss of the season when the Braves were beaten by the Missouri Valley Conference rivals at Oklahoma A&M. The Cowboys won the game 81-55 and are ranked 4th in the nation while Bradley slips to 12th.

It is not business as usual at North Carolina. After a pair of NCAA titles in 1917 and 1918 followed up by a perfect regular season a year ago the Tar Heels find themselves just 10-4 to start the season. Virtually any other school in the country would be happy with 10-4 but North Carolina is not any other school. The Tar Heels lost their season opener at UCLA 59-39 and followed that up with a loss in the championship game of the Alaska Classic, losing 73-66 to then-unbeaten Bradley. While both Bradley and UCLA were top 10 teams at the time of the meetings, it was losses to unranked VMI and #19 Mississippi that really show North Carolina is struggling. The Tar Heels did rebound from those two straight losses to beat Miami 72-44 in their conference opener.

MORE DEALS FOR THE REDS

The Cincinnati Reds continued a busy offseason by making a move today to shore up their pitching staff. Cincinnati dealt veteran first baseman Ed Konetchy (.263,3,34) to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for 30 year old pitcher Bob Shawkey. Shawkey was 11-15 for the Phillies a year ago and is 47-50 in his 5 year major league career.

There is certainly a spot for Shawkey in the Reds rotation after Cincinnati dealt starting pitchers Dolf Luque and Hod Eller in November. Eller and Luque combined to win 31 games last season for Cincinnati. Konetchy was expendable because the Reds added first baseman Ray Grimes from the Red Sox in the Eller deal.

Here is the complete 1921 PGA Tour season. Assuming I get the courses created in time all three majors will be played in the same venue as they were in real life. For 1921 the British Open goes to St. Andrews for the 12th time. St. Andrews most recently held the Open in 1910 when James Braid won

The 25th United States Open will be held in June at the Columbia Country Club in Maryland. The 4th PGA Championship will take place in October at Inwood in New York. With The Masters not debuting until 1934 there are only 3 majors but the Western Open is sometimes considered the 'unofficial' fourth major during this time period. This year's Western Open will be held at the end of August in Cleveland with the Oakwood Golf Club acting as the host course.

ANOTHER DQ WIN FOR LIGHTHEAVY TITLE

For the third bout in a row the World Lightheavyweight championship was decided by a disqualification. This time the defending champ, Fay Kaiser, hung on to the belt when Kid Norfolk was disqualified in the 12th round for repeated low blows. It marked the second DQ for Norfolk in less than a year as he lost the title due to fouls against Mike McTigue in August. McTigue would then be disqualified in his first defense against Kaiser.

Norfolk is considered to be far and away the best fighter in the division and he had full control of this bout at the time of his ejection. Kaiser improves to 31-4-2 with the win while Norfolk falls to 35-3-1.

DEMPSEY SCORES TKO WIN OVER MCVEY

World Heavyweight Champion Jack Dempsey improved to 39-1 with a 10th round TKO of Sam McVey in their title fight. The win is the second straight title defense for the 25 year old champ since he regained his crown last summer with a win over Harry Wills. The veteran McVey sees his record drop to 70-12-3. It was the fourth time in his career the 36 year McVey has been given a title shot but he has come up short on all 4 occassions.

Next up for Dempsey will be an April bout in Edmonton against Canadian Heavyweight champion George Christian.

JANUARY 29, 1921
O'DOWD RECLAIMS MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE

Mike O'Dowd is once again World Middleweight Champion after the 26 year old Minnesota native scored an unanimous decision over Jeff Smith in Chicago. O'Dowd carried the fight to the champion and improved his record to 33-41. Smith drops to 40-7-1. The New York City native was making his 4th title defense.

O'Dowd briefly held the title in 1919 before losing in an upset to Silent Martin, who would in turn lose to Smith in his first title defense.

xLEACH WINS FLORIDA WEST COAST OPEN

Bill xLeach never shot a round over 69 and that allowed him to easily claim top spot in this weekend's PGA Tour stop at Florida Bay Country Club. xLeach won the Florida West Coast Open by 6 strokes over Walter xHagen with Eddie xLoos finishing third.

On the European Tour, Spain's Moe Baca beat Alf xPerry and Willie xMacFarlane in a playoff to win the New Zealand Open. It was Baca's first tour win and came a week after Callum O'Grady got his first tour win at the Australian Open. O'Grady, a 21 year old Irishman, beat Donald xRoss by 3 strokes and Harry xVardon by 4 to win in Sydney.

FRYER KO'S MAGIRL TO DEFEND WELTERWEIGHT TITLE

Philadelphia native Jimmy Fryer hardly broke a sweat in his World Welterweight Title defense. Fryer was all over challenger Art Magirl and knocked him before the opening round was 2 minutes old. The 33 year old Fryer has held the title since knocking out Tommy Uren in Australia last August. Fryer is 42-9-3 in his career.

Magirl, who has held the World Welterweight Title on 3 occassions, falls to 42-8-2.

AUSTRALIAN WINS MIAMI OPEN IN CONVINCING STYLE

While it is true that many of golf's big name stars elect to skip the Florida events that still does not do much to dimminsh the accomplishment of Hammish Sharp this weekend. The 21 year old Australian dominated the Miami Open winning by 9 strokes over his nearest rival. Sharp played on the PGA Tour last season but won just $519 and his best showing was a 15th at the Metropolitan Open. He nearly doubled his career earnings by collecting a cheque for $989 following the win at Bay Hill Country Club.

The European PGA Tour made a stop in the Phillipines where Donald xVinton emerged with his first career victory. The 36 year old is one of the few Americans who has chosen to play on the European tour instead of the North American PGA Tour. Veteran English golfer Harry xVardon finished second. xVardon has 3 straight top 10 finishes to open the season.

LEONARD GETS LIGHTWEIGHT BELT BACK

There is little question that Benny Leonard is far and away the best fighter in the Lightweight Division at the moment. Leonard finally regained the World Title after losing it by disqualification nearly a year ago.

Leonard improved his record to 33-2 with a unanimous decision over Jimmy Dundee. The 25 year old Leonard held the title from 1917-1919 and again in 1920 but lost it in April of last year when he was disqualified from a bout with Joe Welling.

In real life Benny Leonard is considered one of, if not the, greatest Lightweight of all time.

CANADIENS WIN NHL REGULAR SEASON TITLE

Led by the stellar goaltending of Georges Vezina and a balanced scoring attack that featured Newsy Lalonde (51 points) and Amos Arbour (44 points) the Montreal Canadiens finished atop the National Hockey League regular season standings for the first time in three years. The Habs led all teams with 114 goals in 24 games while allowing just 81 against, the fewest in the league. The Canadiens will face the second place Toronto St. Patrick's in a 2 game total goal series to determine who will represent the NHL against the Pacific Coast Hockey League in the challenge for the Stanley Cup.

Hamilton's Joe Malone put on the most dominant display of the season, leading the league with 34 goals and 34 assists for 68 points despite the fact his last place club scored just 100 goals.

TORONTO BEATS MONTREAL IN NHL PLAYOFFS

The Toronto St. Patrick's won the two game total goal series with regular season champion Montreal by a 12-6 score to earn the right to play for the Stanley Cup. The St. Pat's, who finished second to the Canadiens in the regular season, opened the playoff with a 7-2 victory on home ice as Babe Dye scored three times and added an assist. The second game in Montreal was much closer but Dye would tally two more goals as the St Pat's edged the Canadiens 5-4.

Toronto will head west to face PCHA champion Vancouver for the Stanley Cup.

WEST COAST OUTRAGED AS NCAA TOURNAMENT BRACKETS ANNOUNCED

You can not blame people on the west coast for feeling slighted after seeing the number one seeds for this year's NCAA basketball tournament. Fourth ranked UCLA and 5th seed and defending National Champion San Francisco were bypassed for the top seed in the West as the selection commitee elected to name Big Ten champion Illinois number one in the West Region.

The 10th ranked Illini will join Kentucky, Yale and Georgia as number one seeds. Kansas fans also were in shock as the number one ranked Jayhawks and their 29-1 record were relegated to the second seed in the East Region behind Kentucky.

UCLA LOSES IN OPENING ROUND OF THE NCAA TOURNAMENT

Apparently the selection committee knew what it was doing when it denied the UCLA Bruins a number one seed in the NCAA tournament despite the fact that the school was 27-3 and ranked 4th in the nation. The Bruins became the second number two seed in as many years to fall to a #15 in the tournament. Tiny Central Connecticut State got 22 points from junior guard Adam Carey and it helped them thump the Bruins 74-55. UCLA actually led 40-37 at the half before get destroyed in the final 20 minutes.

The Bruins were outrebounded by more than a 2-1 margin and that was due to their two big men, Jeff Bean and Kurtis Woollum, fouling out early in the third.

BAD NEWS FOR YANKS: MOSTIL DONE FOR YEAR

The New York Yankees finished with the worst record in baseball last year and the early news this season is not good. 24 year old Johnny Mostil, who hit .281 with 4 homers and 90 rbi's as a rookie last year, is likely done for the season. The second baseman suffered a herniated disc in his back during today's spring training game against the Red Sox.

The loss of Mostil means the second base job will likely go to veteran journeyman Ray Morgan. The 31 year old is a career .231 hitter in the major leagues. He spent most of last season with Kansas City of the International League.

TWO NUMBER ONE SEEDS FAIL TO REACH SWEET 16

Only two of the four number one seeds remain alive as the NCAA basketball tournament is down to the Sweet 16. The number one seed in the West bracket, Illinois, fell 51-48 in overtime to 8th seeded CCNY while the Midwest bracket is just a mess after top seeded Yale lost 79-59 to Tennessee.

Only the East went pretty much according to script as the number 1,2,3 and 5 seeds reached the round of 16.

EAST REGION SCORES
#1 Kentucky 79 #8 Harvard 55
#5 NYU 76 #13 Vanderbilt 51

#2 Kansas 66 #7 Michigan 41
#3 Alabama 68 #6 USC 51

The Midwest is down to the #3,5,8 and 10 seeds. The region also looks to be set up nicely for defending National Champion San Francisco to return to the final four.
MIDWEST REGION SCORES
#8 Tennessee 79 #1 Yale 59
#5 Holy Cross 73 #4 Oklahoma A&M 60

#10 Kansas State 76 #15 Central Conn St 53
#3 San Francisco 79 #11 Arizona 62

Georgia nearly became the third number one seed to lose but the Bulldogs rallied with 7 points in the final 45 seconds to beat Rice by 4.

SOUTH REGION SCORES
#1 Georgia 62 #8 Rice 58
#5 Davidson 74 #13 Dayton 61

#7 Mississippi 77 #2 Texas A&M 63
#3 Maryland 62 #6 South Carolina 44

Out West a pair of teams that made the Sweet 16 a year ago, North Carolina and Indiana, are back as well as the tournament's lowest seed to reach the Sweet 16. 12th seeded Virginia Tech knocked off number 4 Houston two days after beating #5 Baylor.

WEST REGION SCORES

Tommy xArmour finished third with George xUnderwood and Fred xBaroni tying for fifth. xArmour had finished second in last year's event at the same course. Speaking of xArmour, he continues to hold down top spot in the World Golf Rankings with PGA Europe star Willie xMacFarlane a close second.

xMacFarlane finished 4th in the Euro Tour's German Open this weekend. Englishman Arthur xHavers got the win - the third of his career.

SWEET 16 RESULTS

KENTUCKY 71 NYU 58 Led by Norton Award candidate Marcel Jones the Wildcats went up by as many as 13 points during the first half but settled for a 33-26 lead at the break. Jones led all players with 14 points and added 5 rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.

NYU started the second half strong and got to within 3 points on a couple of occassions before poor shot selection and an aggressive Wildcat defense took them out of the game. Jones would end up dominating the game with 31 points and 10 boards.

Kentucky reaches the Elite Eight for the second straight year.

KANSAS 76 ALABAMA 66 The Jayhawks lost to eventual national champion San Francisco in the Sweet 16 last year despite having won 31 games on the season. Once again they reach the Sweet 16 with 31 victories but this year they get win #32. It took a second half rally to get to the Elite Eight as the Jayhawks trailed Alabama 36-31 at the break.

Guards Travis Williams and Del Walter led Kansas with 17 points each while Jesse Mason and Johnny Church combine for 25 rebounds.

SAN FRANCISCO 87 KANSAS STATE 53 Senior guard Sam Hightower was a second team All-American each of the last two years and a key reason why the Dons won the National Championship last season. He was the leader once again in this game as he scored 24 points and added 10 rebounds. He narrowly missed a triple double as he had 9 assists. Junior forward Brian Smith added 20 points for the winners who led 41-27 at the half.

Kansas State shot just 34% from the field while San Francisco was good on 58% of it's shots.

HOLY CROSS 78 TENNESSEE 69 The Crusaders built a 10 point halftime lead and easily hung on for the win. Senior center Ben Woodruff had a big game for Holy Cross, scoring 16 points and adding 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Andy Ringer had a career high 21 points in the win.

MARCH 25, 1921
NCAA TOURNAMENT IS DOWN TO 8 TEAMS

DAVIDSON UPSETS GEORGIA
The 5th seed earned a spot in the South Regional final after Davidson knocked off top seed Georgia 53-37. The outcome was never in doubt as Davidson built an 11-2 lead to start the game and led by 12 at the half. Guards Matt Wallace, with 13 points, and Ben Pearson, with 11, led the way for the winners who will attempt to reach the final four with a win over Maryland tomorrow.

MARYLAND 64 MISSISSIPPI 60
Senior guard Dwayne Taylor of Maryland was one of the top scorers in the nation all season, averaging 26.8 ppg. Taylor did not dissappoint in the tournament either. After scoring 29 points in the Terrapins tournament opener and 24 points in the second game he added 31 yesterday to lead Maryland into the Elite Eight.

CINDERELLA VIRGINIA TECH IS STILL ALIVE
Virginia Tech continued it's improbable tournament run with an 87-63 victory over CCNY in the West Region. Senior Marty Caskill scored 32 points, including 21 in the first half when the 12th seeded Hokies built an 11 point lead. The clock may strike midnight for Virginia Tech tomorrow when they have to face North Carolina.

NORTH CAROLINA DOWNS INDIANA 61-40
Carolina looked like a team on a mission as the Tar Heels easily disposed of Indiana to reach the Elite Eight. Senior forward Bob Pearce led the way with 16 points while Dwayne Bass came off the bench to match his career high of 13.

After winning back to back National Titles in 1917 and 1918 North Carolina went undefeated during the regular season last year only to fall to San Francisco in the Elite Eight.

MARCH 27, 1921
FINAL FOUR IS SET

KANSAS, SAN FRANCISCO, MARYLAND AND NORTH CAROLINA ARE IN
It would be hard to question the credentials of any of the four teams that have reached the final weekend of the college basketball season. Kansas finished the regular season ranked #1 in the nation while defending NCAA champion San Francisco was ranked 5th. The two ACC squads also had strong seasons - the always dangerous North Carolina was ranked 10th while Maryland finished the season ranked 13th in the polls.

San Francscio and Kansas will square off in the opening game next Saturday. The Jayhawks beat Kentucky 62-45 to win the East Region as Kansas center Jesse Mason scored 20 points and hauled in 20 rebounds. The Dons prevailed in the Midwest with a 76-63 win over Holy Cross. Dons star guard Sam Hightower led the way with 24 points.

The other game Saturday will feature a rematch of the ACC tournament as North Carolina plays Maryland. The Tar Heels ended Virginia Tech's Cinderella run with an 81-60 victory in the West Regional Final while the Terps edged Davidson 64-61 to win the South Region.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE WEEKEND
Kansas is 33-1 on the season and ranked number one in the nation. The Jayhawks are led by the nation's best freshman, center Jesse Mason who has averaged 19 ppg and 14.8 rpg in the tournament. Kansas has been forced to play the entire tournament without their regular season scoring leader as sophomore guard Lars George has been sidelined with a stomach injury. He is expected to return for the final four.

Like Mason of Kansas, San Francisco has their own Norton Award candidate in senior guard Sam Hightower. Hightower was the hero of last year's title game when the Dons beat Texas and he was named a second team All-American. This year he likely will make the first team after averaging 20.5 ppg and 4.7 apg.

The Jayhawks suffered their only loss of the season back on November 28th but with two freshman and two sophomores in the starting lineup they will be hard pressed to beat an experienced San Francisco squad that has 4 starters back from it's National Title squad. The Dons have won 8 straight and are 31-3 on the season.

Few teams know each other better than North Carolina and Maryland. They have met 5 times in the last two seasons with North Carolina winning three of the games. However, Maryland won the most recent matchup, taking the ACC tournament title game with a 62-50 victory. On the season Maryland was 31-5 while North Carolina was 28-8. The two clubs tied for the ACC regular season lead with 13-3 records in conference play.

Maryland is led by Norton Award finalist Dwayne Taylor. The senior shooting guard finished third in the nation with 26.8 ppg this season. For a change the Tar Heels lack a true star but have made up for it with a balanced attack that saw 4 starters average double figures in points. Two senior starters, Eddie Mills and Bob Pearce, will be looking for the third National Championship of their college careers.

Taylor is the Maryland offense and if the Tar Heels can shut him down they will win the game. However, that is much easier said than done.

VANCOUVER SWEEPS NHL CHAMP TORONTO TO WIN STANLEY CUP

The PCHA champion Vancouver Millionaires humbled a travel-weary Toronto St. Pat's squad to win the best-of-five Stanley Cup challenge in the minimum 3 games. In all 3 contests the host squad used a third period rally to claim the victory.

In the opener Vancouver scored 4 unaswered 3rd period tally's to win 8-4. It must much the same in Game two as the Millionaires again scored 4 times without a Toronto response in the final stanza and claimed an 8-3 victory. In the third game, Vancouver built a 4-1 lead after two periods and cruised to a 7-2 victory.

The victory marks the second time Vancouver claims the Cup with the first one coming in 1914-15 when the Millionaires beat the Ottawa Senators in 3 straight games. Vancouver also reached the finals in 1917-18 but lost to Toronto in 5 games.

NORTH CAROLINA AND KANSAS FOR NCAA TITLE

For the third time in four years the North Carolina Tar Heels will play in the NCAA title game. The Tar Heels blew out ACC rival Maryland 61-34 in semi-final action yesterday as senior forward Bob Pearce scored 14 points and added 13 rebounds. Lee Walker, with 11, and Colin Huggins, with 10, also hit double figures in scoring for Carolina. Huggins also chipped in 12 rebounds as North Carolina dominated the boards.

The Tar Heels won by shutting down senior guard Dwayne Taylor of Maryland. Taylor was held to just 11 points and hit just 3-of-17 field goal attempts.

The other semi-final was also a rout as Kansas thumped defending champion San Francisco 71-46. Lars George, who missed all of the Big 12 tournament and all previous NCAA tournament games, returned from injury to score 20 points while freshman center Jesse Mason had 23 rebounds and 16 points. Sam Hightower led San Francisco with 14 points.

xTRAVERS BEATS xJONES IN PLAYOFF AT EL PASO OPEN

Jerry xTravers beat Bobby xJones in a playoff to win the PGA's El Paso Open this past weekend. Heading into Sunday's play the tournament seemed to be Long Jim xBarnes' for the taking but his driver gave him plenty of fits over the final 18 holes as xBarnes shot a 6 over 78 to fall out of the lead. xJones was 3 strokes back of xBarnes entering the final round while xTravers was 5 off the pace.
