Week Six: 5/8 to 5/14
5/8: OFF DAY 5/9: HOU 4 @ SF 9 - WP: Zito (3-3, 4.75 ERA), SV: Chulk (1, 0.00 ERA) Zito won again! I know, I'm as surprised as everyone else. Though, he did look quite a bit shaky during the opening innings, and he gave up four runs to Houston batters primarily in the third and fourth innings, he managed to strike out two. Yeah, that curveball isn't fooling anyone anymore, least of all the NL. Antoan Richardson went 5-for-5 with 3 runs, and an RBI. He stole two bags, and he's starting to make a name for himself. It's too bad that after this season, he'll be a free agent. I need to start calling his agent and let them know we're interested in this young man for at least three years. The team owners have cleared me to make a decent deal for him, in the low eight figures. Vinnie Chulk took the ball in the seventh and kept it for the rest of the game, making him the guy with the save. It was nice to give the bullpen a partial night off. 5/10: HOU 2 @ SF 6 - WP: Lincecum (3-2, 3.98 ERA); HR: Klesko (1) I'm now getting worried about Tim blowing his arm out. This is the third start in a row that he's gone complete game and thrown 130+ pitches. I mean, I know he's used to throwing that many, but I would sincerely hope that Boch would be smarter than to let a kid like that talk him into leaving him in. The upside is that Tim got himself 10 more strikeouts for his stats, and the bullpen is now fully rested for tomorrow under Pedro Liriano. Antoan Richardson managed to get on base three out of four times, and stole four more bags (Damn, but he's a speedy guy), and Fred Lewis added another stolen base to his record. Omar Vizquel hit his career 2,500th hit, and we took some time to give him the ball and do a little thing down on the field within the allowed time the umpires were kind enough to give us. And finally, Timmy got himself the Player of the Game honors; they were long in coming. 5/11: HOU 6 @ SF 3 - LP: Liriano (2-1, 4.50 ERA); HR: Richardson (2) Well, ol' Phil Garner had Boch's number tonight. Berkman and Ensberg lit Pedro Liriano up like a damned Christmas tree. They played longball off of his pitches, and Ensberg even managed a grand salami in the third inning to give them a nice wide open cushion to use against us as the game went on. A fan threw the ball back onto the field. Feliciano tried to hold them, and gave up another run. Atchison and Hennessey mopped up and held them successfully, which was nice, but it was a little too late to be holding a game just to trail them three runs going into the bottom of the ninth. Klesko flied out on the first pitch, then Eliezer Alfonso struck out. Bengie Molina comes up to the plate and he really makes Dan Wheeler work. Strike 1, then Ball. Then a called strike, and another ball. Then three fouls and another ball. Another foul and then he walks. And the fans were like... we have a baserunner on and it's Bengie "Runaway Beer Truck" Molina? Unfortunately, Richardson came up and couldn't bunt him over without giving up the game, so he swung away and flied out to end it. Mercifully. 5/12: SF 9 @ COL 3 - WP: Cain (5-2, 4.96 ERA); HR: Molina 2 (11), Durham (8) Although we won this one handily, I feel awful for what happened during the game. First of all, we absolutely dominated the first inning: Richardson led off with a double, then scored on a bad throwing error by former Giant catcher Yorvit Torrealba. Fred Lewis grounded out. And that was the only out Byung-Hyun Kim would get in the game. Durham hits a home run, Bonds, Zimmerman, and Vizquel all double. Klesko draws a walk to put two on the bases for Bengie Molina's monster home run to left field (412 feet!). After that, they took Kim out of the game and boozed him up or something so he could walk off this game. Cain grounded out. Richardson tripled and scored off Lewis' single. Then Lewis steals second and third, before Durham grounds out to second. We went into the bottom of the first up eight runs! So, the bad news was this: In the top of the sixth inning, Ray Durham hits this super-charged line drive into left field toward Matt Holliday, and for some reason, the ball literally hits him square in the center of his forehead. Here's the amazing thing, and this is why I feel awful... in spite of the pain, Holliday hangs onto it for the out. He lifts the glove up, gets the call... and then falls over unconscious. Scariest damn thing I've ever seen in my life, and I've watched a ton of ball. It took almost thirty minutes before the team doctor determined he could be moved without serious injury, and all we could do was watch in horror as he never got up. They moved him to a board and lifted him onto a cart and got him off the field. And no one applauded... no one said anything. Coors Field was as silent as a tomb before the PA announcer came on to announce who was subbing for him. And the ballgame continued. I found out from Clint Hurdle later that they weren't sure he was going to come back. And I said, "Come back? Like when? In a month or two?" Clint looked at me with those incredibly sad eyes and shook his head. All he said was, "Ever." And that was it. The doctors reported a day later that he was awake, but the concussion was so bad that he couldn't see anything without it getting too blurry... so we're in a wait-and-see mode for now. All we can do is hope for the best for him. Matt Cain also suffered a strained muscle right after striking out Ryan Spilborghs in the bottom of the eighth. The trainer says it looks like he'll be out for a month, give or take a week. At least Matt Cain will be back, eventually. 5/13: SF 3 @ COL 2 - WP: Lowry (1-0, 6.20 ERA), SV: Valverde (8); HR: Durham (9) Another day, another injury. Also, Noah Lowry gets his first win of the season after his injury-laiden April. This time, we lost Ryan Klesko. He slapped a ball against the right field fence and it looked like he might have a triple, but when he turned second, he hit the ground screaming in pain. In what was yet another demonstration of gamesmanship, Klesko reached out with his free hand to touch second before they could put the tag on (not that they would do it, but Klesko did it anyway). We had to use the cart again to pull another player off the field and it was right then that I began to wonder whether there was some sort of curse on Coors Field that I was unaware of. In the past two days, we've had three players injured, and all of them pretty serious. I almost called down to Boch and told him to pack it in before anyone else got hurt, but I didn't give in to my fears of having yet another player go down unexpectedly. Lowry did good to hang onto the lead, giving up only two runs, while Valverde came in the ninth and saved it for us. It was still somewhat of a somber mood in the park for me, but that might've just been me. 5/14: SF 9 @ COL 2 - WP: Zito (4-3, 4.47 ERA); HR: Zimmerman (5), Bonds (8) [742] Before the game, I called Holliday's home to express my best wishes for a speedy recovery. And then, as I caught the SION report out of the corner of my eye, I read the breaking news report and winced. Doctors pronounced that Holliday would permanently suffer from blurry vision for the rest of his life. I know Ray Durham felt awful; he almost didn't play, but Boch reminded him that Holliday wouldn't have wanted Ray to give up like that. The Rockies were generous; they decided to eat his contract as it was written and pay out the rest of it to his family to use to take care of him. They held a little ceremony for him on the field, and there were some early discussions about retiring his number. Man, to be struck down at age twenty-seven, when you still have about 15 more years left to play... I can't imagine what he's going through right now, but I feel for him. I really do. Anyway, Zito looked better on the mound. He went seven innings and struck out six, lowering his ERA to 4.47. Kevin Correia went in to take over for him in the eighth and held the Rockies to the two runs Zito gave up in the fourth and sixth innings. Bonds hit his 742nd home run of his career and the fans threw the ball back. He asked for it, signed it, and gave it to Holliday's family. I thought it was a nice gesture. Well, we're off to LA to visit the Dodgers. I hope for no more injuries. Standings: ![]() ![]() News San Francisco Giants Wednesday, May 9th, 2007
