The birth of the American Association

American Association formed

Many officials associated with the National League figured competition would come from other leagues and it has. Today, the formation of a new league, the American Association, was announced. This new league is led by the former NL team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings. In addition to them, they have also placed teams in the cities of Philadelphia, Baltimore, Louisville, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis.

League Formation:
Cincinnati Red Stockings
Philadelphia Athletics
Baltimore Orioles
Louisville Eclipse
Pittsburg Alleghenys
St. Louis Brown Stockings

1882 Final Standings: National League & American Association

1882 WORLD SERIES: BALTIMORE (AA) vs. BOSTON (NL)

Anson's 4-4 day highlights Red Caps win

Game 1: Boston opens the bottom of the first with 3 straight singles including a Cap Anson RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. In the 2nd inning, the trio of Wood-Meyerle-Anson hit three straight singles to give Boston a 2-0 lead. Baltimore ties it up in the top 3rd with 3 singles and 2 errors. Cap Anson added his 4th hit, a RBI single, in the bottom of the 8th. That’s all Jim Whitney would need as he rung up 6 batters as Boston won 4-2.

Sloppy Baltimore fielding and key Boston hitting allow Caps to win inaugural World Series

Game 2: Cap Anson opened up the scoring with his 5th hit of the series, a RBI single to put Boston up 1-0. In the second, a John O’Rourke triple followed by a Jim Whitney groundout nets Boston a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, a Jimmy Wood error keys a 2 run Baltimore inning where they tie up the game at 2. In the 4th, a Baltimore error leads to Boston’s third run before Levi Meyerle bashes a 3 run double to put Boston up 6-2. Another Baltimore error in the inning leads to another run. The Red Caps tack on 3 more runs in the seventh building their lead to 10-2. After getting a run back in the seventh to make it 10-3, the Orioles would have back-to-back-to-back errors allowing Boston to score 3 more runs making it 13-3 in the eighth. Jim Whitney would handle the rest as he tossed his second straight gem of the series allowing Boston to capture the first ever World Series, 2 games to 0.

I'm loving this thread, especially since my league is relatively close in time. It's fascinating to see how these guys are developing in a league similar to mine.

The Beaneaters seem to be cruising to their 2nd straight berth in the World Series as they won 20 of 22 games from June 12 to July 13. The two newcomers, the Gothams and Quakers, are struggling as was anticipated. In other news, Al Spalding is sitting on 448 career wins and is only 2 away from another milestone in his illustrious career.

1883 Final Standings: National League & American Association

1883 WORLD SERIES: PHILADELPHIA (AA) vs. BOSTON (NL)

O'Brien has 4 hits, Mansell wins the game in 10

Game 1: Philadelphia takes a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning on a Jack O’Brien single.Boston evens up the score at 1 on a George Hall sac fly in the 4th. The score isn’t tied for long as Jimmy Say puts the Athletics in front with a 2 run triple in the bottom of the inning. A Bob Blakiston groundout nets the A’s 4th run. In the top of the 5th, Jersey Bakely got Beaneaters’ Cap Anson to pop up with the bases loaded for the 2nd out. The next batter, Ross Barnes would knock in 2 runs on a single to cut the lead to 4-3. A careless play by George Hall allows the Athletics to score another run in the 5th making it 5-3. After Jim Whitney led off the 7th with a double, Jim O’Rourke singles him in cutting the lead to 5-4. Pinch hitter Levi Meyerle draws a walk to lead off the 9th, advances to 2nd on a sac bunt and ties up the game at 5 on a Jimmy Wood single. Philadelphia avoids any further disaster by turning a double play. After Dan Brouthers was out on a close play to begin the bottom of the 10th, Jack O’Brien collects his 4th hit of the game, a triple. Jimmy Say would then be intentionally walked. So, the Athletics called on pinch hitter John Mansell and he didn’t disappoint as he sent the fans home happy with a game-winning single giving the A’s a 6-5 opening game win.

Beaneaters stave off elimination, win wild affair 11-10

Game 2:
Philadelphia opens up the game with 3 straight hits off Boston starter Will White, including a 2 run double by Dan Brouthers. Jimmy Say would knock his 2nd triple in the series and John Farrow would send him in with a single. An error, steal, and groundout allows Boston to score their 1st run. Boston gets men on 2nd and 3rd on two Philadelphia errors and pitcher Will White singles both home tying up the game at 3 in the 2nd. Philadelphia goes back on top in the 3rd on a Cap Anson error. Another Dan Brouthers’ double scor
