East and West of the Mississippi Baseball League

Ok, after the dynasty that started in 1871 went down in flames, I'm starting up a new one, purely fictional. This league is basically teams from across the US and I just decided to name it the East-West Mississippi Baseball League (EWMBL) since there are teams on the east of the Miss. River and teams on the west of the Miss. River (yep, I'm real creative).

There are 3 levels of minors (AAA, AA, A), most of the teams affiliates are located in the same states or pretty close to them with a few exceptions. This will start in 2007 with all settings & finances geared toward 2007. NO DH in the EWMBL. Next post, I'll tell about how the league came about and introduce ya'll to the 30 teams that make up the league and their affiliates.

A Brilliant Idea
11/27/06

So, here I am, sitting in my hotel room out in Vegas waiting for some BS corporate meeting to start. I'm bored as hell so I'm looking over some baseball articles from over the years and I stumble across a few articles detailing baseball leagues that never managed to get started.

I get to thinking about how I would start a baseball league and how I would run the league and such. Then, I start dreaming about how much control I could have over my league, like which teams get placed where, what rules the players would play by, and how much money players could make. And the best part would be, No one could question my judgment since I would be the commissioner. Then, someone knocks on my door yelling to me that the meeting is about to start and I better get my butt down there.

I'm sitting in my chair listening to my boss ramble on about company expenditures & whatever the hell else he was talking about. I'm not really sure because I wasn't paying the least bit of attention to him, I was too busy thinking about all the possibilities of me running my very own baseball league. Although in my mind, I knew I had nowhere near enough money to even come close to starting a league of my own, it was a dream and nothing more than that. The meeting finished up and I boarded the 7:45 flight back to my house in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Now, it's about a week later and I'm listening to the morning news and they're talking about how the Powerball Lottery is up to $245 million and anyone that hits it would be set for life and more. Now, I'm not what you'd call the gamblin' type, but I decided what could it hurt to spend a couple of bucks on some lotto tickets. I run down to the local Quikstop and buy $5 worth of Powerball tickets, I just quick picked them because I was in a hurry and didn't feel like picking them myself.

The time comes on the news when they announce the winning numbers for the Powerball. I fumble through some papers and pull out my tickets not really expecting to even match one number. The guy on TV says, "12". Ok, I got that, I'm already impressed. Next, he says, "14". Whoa, 2 numbers for me! He then says, "23". First thing I think is, that is Michael Jordan's number but then I realize i have 23 on my ticket! The next number he says is "37". I look and see I have 37 on my ticket as well! I have guaranteed myself $1,000. I'm thinking there is no way I'll have the last number. From the TV, I hear the number "47". I look down at my ticket and see 47!!! I'm in utter shock realizing that I've just won $100,000. The last number to be called is the Powerball and if I hit this, I would win $245 million. The guy on the TV takes a deep breath and reads out the number "22". I look at my ticket and it has 22!!!!!!! I'VE JUST HIT THE POWERBALL!!!!!!!!!!

Jump ahead in the story, I realize I can finally achieve my dream of only a week earlier of owning my baseball league and so I start up the EWMBL which will be further discussed next time.

I'm probably going to sim 10-20 years to build some history and then pick a team (not sure how) and take them over and start covering the league.

I will take over..........

the JACKSON SLAYERS!! The reason why is because I wanted a challenge and there the only team that has yet to make a playoff appearance in the league. Next up, I'll go through the roster and notable players in the minors for them.

NOTE- I simmed until right after the 2020 Championship was over, 10-25-2020 is the date

Not a bad team, and the only reason i knew about the seals is that my grandma used to date Former seals player and then Major Leaguer Albie Pearson, and the weirdest thing is they were both born on THE SAME EXACT DAY. September 12th 1935. It was so weird

Lets meet the team: Jackson Slayers

STARTERS

Catcher- Andy Young (33 yrs)- A man who has been around the league since the inaugural season.

First Base- Gary McKinney (27 yrs)- Has good gap & HR power but must cut down on his K's.

Second Base- Steve Nelson (32 yrs)- Must be on his way out of Jackson as he has a $6 million contract and isn't producing good enough numbers for that money.

Third Base- Salvador Campos (25 yrs)- Used to play at first, learning to play 3rd base now. Good contact & decent gap power.

Short Stop- Curt Edwards (27 yrs)- While his offense may not be there, this man can play all 4 infield positions and play them SUPER well.

Left Field- Mauro Benitez (31 yrs)- A speedster that was acquired from Topeka in midseason. Will probably be replaced by younger talent.

Center Field- Robert Gardner (26 yrs)- An absolute burner on the basepaths (58 steals this yr and 91 with Topeka in 2018). His offense is very poor though.

Right Field- Jake Warren (34 yrs)- A $13 million/year player that can barely produce 25 HR's and 80 RBI's a year?

Pitching- STARTERS

1. Chih Hsia (25 yrs)- The Taiwanese pitcher could be the ace of the staff for years to come
2. Fernando Rodriguez (29 yrs)- A lifetime .500 pitcher in 6 seasons, the team is relying on the Texas native to perform well.
3. Millard Carlson (26 yrs)- Has never really been able to put everything together and be successful yet.
4. Luis Rodriguez (24 yrs)- The young Dominican relies on control and movement as his stuff is less than superb
5. Pete Fish (28 yrs)- Once again, a pitcher who hasn't been able to make everything work out there on the mound.

BULLPEN

MR Michael Cox (26 yrs)- A man with the endurance to start but not a quality starter.
MR Ed Brown (25 yrs)- Missed whole 2020 season with bone chips in his elbow.
MR Anthony Wagner (31 yrs)- Has bounced between AAA & majors for the last 4 seasons.
MR Paul Lander (30 yrs)- Used to start, now moved to the pen. Has been effective out of the pen last 3 yrs.
SU Manny Chavez (26 yrs)- Has been a workhouse out of the bullpen the past couple years
SU Ken Moore (31 yrs)- Former starter who lost his job because of poor performance. He's on a short leash this year.
CL Corey Howard (27 yrs)- Was 37-43 in save opp. last year with a 2.48 ERA

OCTOBER 29, 2020

4 days into the job, I was offered a trade from the Charleston Crusaders.
I accepted it sending 19 yr old AA shortstop James Madison to Charleston and received 29 yr old CF Jesus Guitierrez.

Analysis: To me, Madison really wasn't going to develop into much of a player. Guitierrez has great speed and a decent bat. He'll probably take over the starting job in CF because CF is one of our weakest spots.

Helena and Boise agreed to deal as well. Helena sends 29 yr old RF Lou Wilkins and Helena sent 25 yr old SP Ramon Ortiz and 18 yr old A reliever Steve Owens.

November 8, 2020

Tulsa dealt 21 yr old SS Jason Wallace to Albuquerque for 2 minor league pitchers.

November 13, 2020

Las Vegas third baseman Luis Martinez will miss 4 weeks after he suffered a damaged knee meniscus while taping a late night television show. The team declined to comment on this unfortunate situation.

November 15, 2020

Charleston sends 26 yr old MR Sergio Hernandez to Topeka for minor league 2B Alan Hunt.

Free Agency Starts TODAY

It's that time of the year, where every team can better there chances of winning it all by signing a couple of key players.

First off, the players from Jackson that will file for free agency are:

MR Joe Day
MR Clarence Carver
LF Mauro Benitez
2B Steve Nelson
MR Ken Moore
C Andy Young

Benitez is probably the only player I'm going to try and resign as the other players aren't worthy of a spot on my roster.

In Free agency, I'm going to target Catcher Rob Harris who is the best player out there and coincidentally our biggest positional need. Our other major need is a second basemen, I will target Bartolo Gonzalez. Since we have also lost some pitching, I will go after middle relief.

You'd better be careful. Players don't get the nickname "Wacko" for being Animaniacs fans.

December 2

I have a number to tell everyone. $5,950,000 -- thats how much Bartolo Gonzalez will make a year for the next 4 years as he signed with the Jackson Slayers organization today. Gonzalez has good instincts on the bases and has great gap power, but sometimes K's a little bit too much.

December 3

Lexington Lightning re-signed SP Juan Martinez to a 2 year $14,180,000 deal.

December 7

The Amarillo Tumbleweeds signed Australian closer Edwin Warwick to a 3 year $12,990,000 deal with the last year being a team option.

The Syracuse Blizzard have come to terms with reliever Emilio Aguila as he signs a 3 year $17,010,000 deal.

Rob Harris favors the 4 year $94,800,000 offer I made him. That's over 20 million a year for a catcher! Well, he is one of the best.

December 8

Harrisburg River Rats sign 1B Werner Sewell to a 3 year $63,820,000 deal.

Reliever Ed Sparks could become the newest member of the Slayers as he favors my latest offer.

Ronald Floyd who has 540 career steals signs a 1 year $640,000 contract to be the backup shortstop here in Jackson.

December 10 to End of 2020

December 10

Lexington Lightning sign 32 yr old catcher Bobby Stephenson to a 3 year $50,790,000 deal.

December 11

Omaha Stampede have signed 36 yr old closer Joe "Zippo" Melton to a 2 year $19,040,00 deal.

We have re-signed Mauro Benitez to a 1 year $1,000,000 deal.

December 12

In a somewhat questionable move, the Montgomery Gunslingers signed 40 yr old Cuban second basemen Felix Beltre to a 3 year $57,050,000 contract. When asked about this move, the organization said, "Felix has been an elite player in this league since the beginning and we believe he has 3 more good years left in him". Well, you guys better think so, because I see this as a waste of money.

December 14

The San Francisco Seals have signed 31 yr old catcher Steve Norton to a 4 year $63,480,000 deal.

December 21

The Omaha Stampede have come to terms with 31 yr old RF Javier "Dangerous" Trevino on a 3 year $62,580,000 deal. Trevino has amassed 391 HR's in his career, good for 7th all time.

December 25

Shortstop Tim Thompson got a very nice present today as he inked a 4 year $49,680,000 contract with the Amarillo Tumbleweeds.

December 27

The Seals sign 36 yr old LF Lynn Thomas to a 2 year $44,000,000 extension.

ROB HARRIS

December 31

Rapid City Roughriders sign 37 yr old RF Larry Anderson to a 2 year deal worth $6,160,000.
