2010: WBO Season in Review
12/31/2010 Uncasville, CT- As we look forward to the start of another fantastic baseball season across the globe, it's necessary to take a look at what happened in 2010, as well as fast forward to what awaits us in 2011. An amazing Major League season capped by the Minnesota Twins coming back from a 3 games to 1 deficit to win the World Series. Francisco Liriano, Twins pitcher, won the pitching triple crown, leading the American League in strikeous, wins and ERA. The Philadelphia Phillies, who lost to Minnesota in the World Series, had their own star make history. Ryan Howard hit 67 homers, the most in a single season since Barry Bonds hit 73 in 2001. However, 2010 might be best remembered as the first year being affiliated with the World Baseball Organization. Little changes occurred on the Major League level, except that ticket sales were at an all-time high, and TV deals were inked with ESPN, FOX and NBC. There's also been talk of a Baseball Channel, similar to the NFL Network. The ABL and WBL, Commissioner Mauro's "babies", had fantastic seasons in their own right. Record attendance for the 4th season in a row for the ABL, while the WBL has really grown on a global scale. As the 2011 season awaits in ernst, there will be a variety of changes which could impact the baseball world. Commissioner Mauro will begin his goal of "ridding the world of Minor League baseball" by eliminating the Rookie and Short-A league levels. According to Mauro, he'd rather see these teams be replaced with "their own organizations". Mauro also hopes to see an increase in "in-game entertainment" by Major League clubs. A few teams benefitted from "pep teams", as well as a few in-game concerts, and it's expected that more franchises will follow suit. 2011 will also mark the first season of the "Second League", which will combine the ABL and WBL into one league. The two subleagues, the American League and the World League, will crown one champion at the end of the season. The World League will be six teams bigger in 2011, adding franchises in London, Rome, Madrid, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong and Panama City. Most WL teams, and some AL teams, will operate under new nicknames. While Mauro is being quiet about his future plans, rumors are swirling that his goal of having a "true" World Series are quickly coming to fruition. He's promised that there are a lot of changes in store, and the majority of Major League owners are behind him.
