I need to know 2 things from any readers out there...

1) Were the pictures from the end of month recap serious overkill? the pics weren't hard to do, but if it is a pain for people then I can do something else. I was only going to do them for the monthly recaps anyway...

2) As always, if there is any information that you would like to know about the league - certain players, teams, stats or whatever - feel free to ask. I am more than happy to oblige.

I think I have a format now that I comfortable with and updates will be more frequent from here on out.

Thanks to all who are reading!

Much appreciated. I loved baseball in the 80's but wanted to go back to when my favorite players were pretty young. Guys like Mike Schmidt, George Brett and Eddie Murray. As well as guys from the past ending out thier careers - Carl Yastrzemski, Willie McCovey and Willie Stargell to name a few.

I just want to do the era justice with this thread, that is kinda why it has taken me longer to get a format I think people will like.

Thanks for the comment - always good to know someone likes to read my blabbering.

Glad you mentioned Thurman as he is another major reason I started in 1977. Having been raised in the Akron/Canton area, I was just a few miles away from where Munson's plane went down. I was only 5 at the time, but after reading about him while growing up - I began to admire and miss the guy. I was a catcher for 8+ years.

Thurman is having a great season so far, batting 7th in the potent Yankee lineup:

Apr 26 - Cincinnati loses a main part of the Big Red Machine as Ken Griffey (.343, 12 RBI) fractures his jaw while making a spectacular catch while crashing into the right field wall.
We now know where Junior learned it from. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree after it crashes into the outfield fence.

As for the pics, there might have been a tad too much of pics, but as a general rule, pics >= no pics.

I like how you go into detail regarding trades; it's inspired me to do the same for my own dynasty the next time there is a trade.

One question: Has there been any attempt to pull players from your minor league team by front-office management?

Awesome numbers so far. It's a shame you were so young when he passed you missed one hell of a ball player and the epitomy of what a Yankee is

After Twins CF Dan Ford (.333,3 HR,10 RBI) hits a 2-run 1-out HR in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extras, Ben Oglivie (.298,5 HR,20 RBI) goes yard leading off the top of the 10th off of Jeff Holly (0-2,4.22 ERA) to give Detroit a 7-6 win. Detroit's Jason Thompson and Milt May each had home runs in thier 3-hit days and C Butch Wynegar had 3 hits for the Twins.

The Atlanta Braves would lose thier 12th straight game, this one 5-3 to the Houston Astros. 3B Barry Bonnell (.259,3 RBI) has 3 hits in the game and SS Jerry Royster (.148,3 HR,6 RBI) hits a 2-run home run in the 8th to make it close, but the comeback would fall short. John Urrea (2.43 ERA) runs his record to 4-0 for the Astros.

Cubs 1B Larry Biittner (.264,4 RBI) doubles home SS Ivan DeJesus off of Reds closer Pedro Borbon (0-1,3.00 ERA) in the top of the 11th to lead Chicago to a 6-5 victory. Bruce Sutter (1-0,2.57 ERA) blew the save for the Cubs in the 9th when he gave up an 2-out RBI single to Ray Knight following a Biitner error at first, but gets the win. Knight (.340) and George Foster (.333) each have 3 hits for the Reds.

Philadelphia hits 4 home runs, including 2 by Greg Luzinski, but falls to the Giants when 3B Bill Madlock (.293,4 HR,11 RBI) hits a 2-run 2-out walkoff blast off Phillies closer Gene Garber (0-1,2.70 ERA) that wins the game 7-6. Giants CF George Thomassoon (.241,3 HR,15 RBI) hits 2 homers of his own, his last closing the game to within 1 in the 8th, to go along with 4 RBI. Phillies starter Steve Carlton (4.19 ERA) would only last 3 innings, giving up 4 earned runs on 3 hits and 3 walks.

Lake City Moths (18-10) at Staunton Bluefins (18-10)
Lake City 2
Staunton 3
W: Gene McArdle (2-1) L: Bobby Charles (0-1) S: Elliot Holley (7)
HR – None
POG: Jesus Rodriguez (STA) 4-5, 2B, R

I have a weakness of leaving my starters in too long and it bit me today. Started Charles because Danny Patterson has been nursing a blister and Bobby did not dissappoint me. We were facing one of the best pitchers in the league in Maximo Sanchez (love that name) and were tied at 2 going into the bottom of the 8th. Should have taken Bobby out, but thought he had 1 more inning. WRONG! He loaded the bases on a hit batter, a sac bunt and an intentional walk, then gave up a sac flyto lose the lead. Still, he did go the distance.

May 2
American League - Player of the Week: (April 24 - April 30)
LF Jim Rice (BOS)!
He batted .400 (10-25), with 4 HR, 8 RBI, 9 runs scored and a 1.000 SLG.

National League - Player of the Week: (April 24 - April 30)
C Ted Simmons (STL)!
He batted .600 (12-20), with 2 HR, 5 RBI, 7 runs scored and a 1.000 SLG.

The Braves finally win a game as Andy Messersmith (1-3,3.92 ERA) pitches 8 shutout innings and closer Mike Marshall (3 SV, 3.68 ERA) slams the door for a 1-0 victory. The Braves only have 4 hits off of John Candelaria (1-2, 2.93 ERA), but manage to string 2 together in the second and score the only run on a double play.

Greg Luzinski (.284,8 HR,19 RBI) hits 2 more home runs in a 11-1 Philadelphia rout over San Diego, giving him 4 in 2 days. Both dingers came at the expense of Padres starter Bob Shirley (2-2,3.90 ERA), who lasted only 4 2/3 innings. "The Bull" also scored 4 times and drove in 5 RBI. Gary Maddox (.260) and Jerry Martin (.184) each had 3-hit nights for the Phillies.

Lake City Moths (18-11) at Staunton Bluefins (19-10)
Lake City 4
Staunton 3
W: Will Combs (2-0) L: Terry Miller (1-1) S: Bob Crouch (3)
HR – STA: Jimmy Scott (4)
POG: Jimmy Scott (STA) 1-4, HR, 2B, R

Thought we were done for when Derek Todd got chased in the 6th and being down 3-0, but we some how came through in the 8th. Javier Garcia (the LF) opened the inning with a double and after Danny Mac(Pherson) grounded out, they decided to give Ben Ball the intentional walk. Why Donny Mitchell decided to bunt next is beyond me, but the sacrifice moved Garcia & Ball up a base. So with runners on 2nd and 3rd and two out, John Kennedy and pinch hitter Steve Larsen would hit consecutive singles to score Garcia and Long and pinch hitter Jared White singled to score Kennedy and Larsen to make everything right with the world.

Actually it has happened a few times where a few guys were promoted to AA, and unfortunately I wasn't notified beforehand with an email (have to fix that in the options) - I have it set to where only players with Major League experience will ever get the call to the bigs (at least until I pass the current baseball season, which right now will be sometime in the year 2043).

I also moved the draft to November after the season.

Cleveland's Jim Kern (0-2, 7.72 ERA) walks the bases loaded with 2-out in the top of the 11th inning, then gives up a 2-run single to pinch hitter Luis Gomes (.250) to give the Twins the lead and the game, 8-6. Bobby Grich (.200) hits his 1st home run as an Indian in the 6th inning.

After giving up 2 runs in the top of the 15th inning on a single by Merv Rettenmund (.226) and an error by 2B Tito Fuentes (1st), Detroit comes storming back to score 3 in the bottom of the frame off Ranger reliever Roger Moret (0-1, 81.08 ERA). Moret manages only 1 out before giving up a double and 3 consecutive singles, the game winner provided by Ron LeFlore (.315,6 RBI) who scores Milt May (.288) for the 8-7 victory. Jason Thompson (.283) and Ben Oglivie (.320,6 HR,22 RBI) each have 4 hits for the Tigers, while Dwight Evans (.306,4 HR,9 RBI), Roy Howell (.228) and Bump Wills (.256) have 3 hits each for the Rangers.

The Yankees score 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th, then win the game 4-3 in the 10th on a 2-out single by Graig Nettles (.322) off of Dick Drago. Drago (1-1,3.38 ERA) enters the game in the 8th with runners at the corners and gives up a single to Lou Pinella (.271,13 RBI) to score Mickey Rivers and the game-tying 2-RBI double by DH George Zeber (.282,9 RBI). Catfish Hunter (3-0) gets the win in relief as he has failed to give up a run in 12 1/3 innings.

Tight game until the 7th, when Larson broke it open with his 2-run blast. Carter went 7 innings and my dynamic duo of Bob Crouch and Tommy Malone shot the Hippos down for the final 2 for the win. This is a rough stretch of games as all of these teams are within 2 games of the division lead.

Houston used 3 consecutive singles by Art Howe, Wilbur Howard (.128) and Rob Sperring (.292) followed by a triple by Terry Puhl (.287,11 RBI) in the top of the 11th off closer Bruce Sutter (1-1,5.19 ERA) to defeat the Cubs 9-6. Howe (.358,14 RBI) would collect 4 hits and 2 RBI in the game, while Ivan DeJesus (.304) had 3 hits for Chicago.

Dennis Leonard (5-1,2.70 ERA) pitched a 3-hit shutout while Freddie Patek (.244) and John Wathan (.263) each chipped in 3 hits as Kansas City cruised against the White Sox 7-0. Leonard would walk 4 and strike out 3 for his 3rd complete game of the year.

We could only manage 5 hits today against Hippo pitching, but still held a 1-0 lead going into the home half of the 6th. That is when Juan Jimenez hit a 2-out grand slam that just barely cleared the wall in right to give them the lead and the win. We loaded the bases with 1 out in the 8th, but only managed 1 run on a walk to Dennis Mitchell. Jared White with strike out looking and Jack Hicks would ground out to end our only threat.

Kansas City starter Paul Splittorff (1-3,4.03 ERA) and closer Mark Kittell (6 SV,10.80 ERA) hold Chicago to a single by SS Tim Nordbrook in a 3-1 win over the White Sox. Chicago has managed just 4 hits in the last 18 innings. Ken Kravec (3-3,2.91 ERA) went the distance in the loss.

In a game delayed 47 minutes by rain in the 3rd inning, Don Gullett (3-2,3.29 ERA), Gil Patterson (5.79 ERA) and Catfish Hunter hold Oakland to just 3 hits while shutting out the A's 5-0. Thurman Munson (.333) delivers 3 hits for the Yankees to lead the offense.

It was a pitchers duel for the second straight day, and for the second straight day we came out on the losing end of it. Before the game I was informed that Ruben Serrano had been promoted to AA Lincoln, leaving me with just 3 outfielders on the entire roster. Grudgingly I started Steven Larsen and his weak outfield skills in RF and was rewarded with a throwing error that gave the Hippos the deciding run. Javier Garcia came through in the leadoff spot with 3 hits, but we grounded into 3 double plays that killed every scoring opportunity we had. Haynes went the distance on just 96 pitches and only gave up 6 hits.

In a season of last innings wins, Boston is the latest as Carlton Fisk (.303,4 HR,20 RBI) sends the first pitch he sees from California closer Dick Drago (1-2,2 BS,3.12 ERA) over the left field wall for a 2-run walkoff home run and a 5-3 win. Luis Tiant (2-0,1.54 ERA) would pitch 1/3 of an inning for the win.

Detroit scores in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat Milwaukee 1-0 without getting a hit. Bob McClure opened the inning by walking Ben Oglivie, who then went to 2nd on a groundout to first. After Milt May was intentionally walked, Oglivie would go to third on a flyout by Phil Mankowski and then score when Milwaukee defensive replacement 3B Bob Sheldon boots a ball hit by Aurelio Rodriguez. The ending spoils the effort of Brewers starter Jerry Augustine (2.18 ERA) who pitched 9 innings of 2-hit baseball. Brewers starter Milt Wilcox (3-3,2.81 ERA) goes the distance, giving up just 3 hits in 10 innings with 6 strikeouts.

Cardinals 3B Ken Reitz (.267) singles home Keith Hernandez in the bottom of the 11th inning off Bo McLaughlin (0-2,12.00 ERA) to give St. Louis a 6-5 victory over Houston. John Sutton (1-2,2.77 ERA) pitches the final inning for the win.

Phillies C Tim McCarver (.329) delivers 5 hits and SS Larry Bowa (.387) and pitcher Steve Carlton (.333) each add 4 more - including a triple by Carlton - in a 13-3 rout over the Dodgers. Carlton (2-2,3.95 ERA) throws a complete game, striking out 11 and walking only 2 while Dodger starter Don Sutton (4.97 ERA) lasts only 2 1/3 after giving up 7 earned runs and falling to an 0-4 record.

Texas SS Bert Campaneris has signed a 2-year extension with a team option for a third at $481,000 a year, $1,443,000 total.

Texas also resigned reserve OF Dave May to a 1-year extension worth $99,000.

San Diego resigns MR Paul Siebert to a 1-year extension worth $203,000.

Once again, Patterson was lights out and I am counting the days before they take him from me. Martinez almost matched him pitch for pitch, giving up just 7 hits with 7 strikeouts, but gave up a 2-run blast in the third to Brandon Hayden to the only score. Hayden would go 3-for-3, hitting that home run (his 4th) to raise his average to .367

Cincinnati has resigned SS Dave Concepcion (.307,1 HR,12 RBI) to a 4-year extension. $804,000 in the first year, $863,000 the second, $923,000 in the third and $982,000 in the final year.

New acquisition Don Baylor (.271,7 HR,12 RBI) leads off the top of the 9th with a triple off reliever Larry McCall (0-1,4.70 ERA) and scores on a fielders choice by Jeff Newman for the eventual game winning run in Oakland's 2-1 win over the Yankees. Baylor would also account for Oakland's other run with his 7th home run of the year. A's starter Rick Langford (2-3,3.67 ERA) allows 4 hits in 8 innings to get his 2nd win.

Bump Willis (.256) doubles to lead off the bottom of the 11th off of Marty Pattin (0-1,9.82 ERA)and later scores on a sacrifice fly by Bert Campaneris to give the Rangers a 5-4 win over the Royals. Paul Lindblad (1-1,6.30 ERA) goes the final 2 2/3 innings for the win. Hal McRae (.255) leads the Royals with 3 hits in the game.

Gary Maddox (.272) doubles home Larry Bowa in the top of the 9th off of Dennis Lewallyn (2-1,1.46 ERA) to give the Phillies a 4-3 win over the Dodgers. Larry Christenson (2-2,3.89 ERA) goes 8 innings and gave up 3 runs (0 earned) for his 2nd win.

Oakland resigned MR Doc Medich to a 1-year extension worth $79,538.

California resigned MR Mickey Scott to a 1-year extension worth $105,000.

After Jones hit a 3-run shot to give us a 5-0 lead in the first, we were able to coast to an easy win. The last two games I have been dealing with fatigued outfielders and have been trying to give them a day off. Yesterday it was backup C Jared White playing LF, today it was lumbering 1B Lucas Carlton playing CF. Carlton didn't have the range and gave up some hits because of it, however Carlton ended the game with a catch and throw double play with the bases loaded. Ben Ball added 3 hits for us with a double, a RBI and a run scored.

San Diego resigns Rollie Fingers (2-0,6 SV,6.08 ERA) to a 1-year extension worth $1,060,000.

Already reeling from the loss of RF Ken Griffey, the Reds were dealt another blow when C Johnny Bench (.207,5 HR,14 RBI) collided with Pirates 2B Rennie Stennett while trying to break up a double play and suffered a pinched nerve in his neck. Doctors expect Bench to be miss 3-4 weeks of action. The Reds won the game, 10-3.

California closer Dick Drago (2-2,2.53 ERA) finally wins a game in the 9th as Boston reliever Tom Murphy (0-1,3.38 ERA) throws 2 wild pitches to Dave Chalk, allowing Tony Solaita to score the go ahead run. Fred Lynn (.407,15 RBI) has 3 hits for the Red Sox and is hitting over .400 for the year.

Chicago scores 4 times in the top of the ninth, then hold on as the Indians plate 2 in the bottom of the inning to win 5-3. Oscar Gamble (.264,12 RBI) hits the eventual game winner, a double with the bases loaded off Tom Buskey (6.27 ERA) that scored 3 runs. White Sox DH Wayne Nordhagen (.367) has 4 hits, including a double and a RBI in the 9th. Bobby Grich (.268), subbing for the injured Duane Kuiper, has 3 hits for the Indians in the loss.

Jose Cruz (.275,20 RBI) hits a 2-out single in the top of the 9th off Al Hrabosky (0-1,3.86 ERA) to give the Astros a 6-5 win over the Cardinals. Bake McBride (.379,21 RBI) and Tony Scott (.306) each had 3 hits for the Cards in the losing effort. Mark Lemongello (3.60 ERA) runs his record to 6-0 with the win.

Reserve 2B Ted Sizemore (.250) singles home Larry Bowa and Garry Maddox in the top of the 10th off Elias Sosa (2-1,5.40 ERA) to lead the Phillies over the Dodgers 4-3. Dodgers starter Tommy John (2.02 ERA) goes 9 innings, giving up just two earned runs before turning over to Sosa.

Twins pitcher Dave Goltz (2-3,5.20 ERA) pitches a complete game 2-hitter in a 6-1 victory over the Blue Jays. Jim Mason (.176,3 HR,12 RBI) was the only Blue Jay to touch 2nd base as his solo shot in the 6th provided Toronto's only scoring. Goltz would strike out 11 while walking 2 and RF Glenn Adams (.336,5 HR,12 RBI) would hit 2 solo home runs of his own in the win.

Giants RF Jack Clark (.351) singles in the 6th inning off Mets reliever Craig Swan to extend his hitting streak to 25 games. The Giants will lose the game 5-4.

This game was an actual pitchers duel until the 5th, when we started to pound on Wise. We scored 5 more times in the 7th to build a 9-1 lead, then had my catcher Jared White back out in LF and utility infielder Miguel Tirado playing CF to try and build some experience there. Played recently sent down SS Shawn Osorio for the 1st time today and he responded, going 2-4 with a double. We have like 15 shortstops on the roster so it is difficult to find him playing time, but it looks as if he will earn it.

San Diego resigns LH reliever Dave Tomlin (1-0,1 SV,0.56 ERA) for 1 more year worth $776,000.

Eric Rasmussen (4-2,2.95 ERA) pitches 8 innings of 3-hit baseball to outduel Cincinnati rookie Paul Moskau (5-2,2.09 ERA) as the Cardinals beat the Reds 2-0 in Busch Stadium. Rasmussen strikes out 6 while walking only 1 while Moskau goes the distance in the loss, giving up just 4 hits and 2 earned runs.

Cleveland resigns backup 1B Bill Melton to a 1-year extension worth $124,000.

1B John Mayberry (.244,6 HR,12 RBI) goes 3-for-4 including a duo of 2-run home runs to lead Kansas City over California, 9-7. LF Hal McRae (.269,2 HR,13 RBI) adds a solo home run of his own as part of his 3-hit day. Bobby Bonds (.193,11 RBI) collects 3 hits for the Angels, including his 4th homer of the year. Paul Splittorff (2-3,4.44 ERA) gets the win after giving up 6 runs in 8 2/3 innings.

Another hard fought game which we were losing 1-0 for 6 innings. A bases clearing double by John Kennedy opened the flood gates for us as we managed to score 5 runs in the final 2 innings to blow it open. Mike Haynes came 1 out away from a complete game but I had him on a strict 120-pitch limit. Still he had 9 strikeouts and no walks while giving up just 7 hits.

Reggie Smith (.333,26 RBI) led a hit parade in Stade Olympique as he went 4-for-5 while scoring 4 runs and driving in 3 in a 14-6 bashing of the Expos. Davey Lopes (.314) added 3 hits of his own as every Dodger in the starting lineup not named Lee Lacy had a base hit. Andre Dawson (.302) managed 3 hits in a losing effort for the Expos.

37-year old Carl Yastrzemski (.292,22 RBI) hits his 345th career home run, a 3-run blast in the top of the 11th inning off Pablo Torrealba (1-1,5.79 ERA) to give the Red Sox a 8-5 victory over Oakland. The game winning shot was Yaz's second of the game and 7th of the year and he stands just 1 homer shy of Dick Allen and 28th place on the all-time list. Rodney Scott (.193) and Jeff Newman (.275) have 3 hits apiece for the A's as the Red Sox were outhit as a team, 16-13.

An RBI double by Rico Carty (.282,13 RBI) followed by an RBI single by Buddy Bell (.282,17 RBI) with 2-out in the bottom of the 9th off Milwaukee closer Bob McClure (2-2,2 BS,1.17 ERA) sends the Indians home with a 5-4 win. Bell and catcher Ron Pruitt (.207) each have 3 hits for the Indians while Milwaukee CF Von Joshua (.250) goes 4-for-4 in the loss. Lary Anderson (1-0,2.16 ERA) pitches 2 scoreless innings to get the win.

Jeff Burroughs (.263,14 RBI) hits a 2-run double in the top of the 10th off Pirates reliever Pete Mitchell (1-1,3.46 ERA) to give Atlanta a 6-4 win. Barry Bonnell (.273) and Gary Matthews (.288) each have 3 hits to help the Braves cause. Pirates pitcher Jerry Reuss goes 2-for-2 to raise his average to .308 and hits his 1st home run of his career.

Tim Whitfield (.293,2 HR,18 RBI) pinch hits for pitcher Bob Knepper (2-4,4.44 ERA) with 2 outs and sends the second pitch he sees from Steve Carlton over the left field fence to give the Giants a 2-1 win over the Phillies. Carlton (2-3,3.61 ERA) will finish up, striking out 9 and walking 2 for his 3rd complete game and Knepper goes 8 innings to get the win, with 5 strikeouts and walking one.

I must admit, I am getting spoiled with my starting pitching and I know it is only a matter of time before most of these guys are playing up in AA Lincoln. Thomas had some control issues so San Bernadino had plenty of baserunners, but somehow Thomas got out of the almost every jam. We were a doubles machine as 4 of our 7 hits were of the 2 bagger variety. I'll give props to San Bernadino 1B Tomas Randin who did manage 3 hits against us.

Atlanta's Andy Messersmith (2-4,3.42 ERA) gets his 2nd win of the year with a complete game shutout over the Pirates, 6-0. Messersmith gives up 6 hits while striking out 6, walking 2 and hits his 1st home run in the 9th inning off Larry Demery (5.23 ERA), the 5th of his career.

After making a fantastic catch in which he collided with CF Hector Cruz in the 9th inning, Cardinals LF Jerry Mumphrey (.228,2 HR,9 RBI) was helped from the field unable to put weight on his left leg. After the game, the injury was diagnosed as a damaged meniscus (knee) and will keep Mumphrey off the diamond for at least 2 weeks.

Losing again until the 6th, when we scrapped together a couple of runs to take a 3-2 lead. From then on it was the Daniel Jones show as he hit a bases clearing double in the 7th and a 3-run home run on the 9th to provide our the rest of our scoring for the day. Derek Todd pitched great, going 8 1/3 innings and I cannot say enough about our starting pitching. Of course, these are games we should be winning, but a quality start is a quality start.

San Francisco resigns a trio of pitchers: reliever Charlie Williams (0-0,0.96 ERA) gets a 3-year extension worth $306,000 at $102,000 per, closer Gary Lavelle (0-1,0.64 ERA) signs up for 3 more years at $815,000 a year ($2,445,000 total) and starter Jim Barr (5-1,3.19 ERA) gets a 7-year deal worth $9,632,000 at $1,376,000 a year.

Steve Rogers (3-3,2.91 ERA) gives up just 2 hits, but a 2-out, 2-run home run to Greg Gross (.289,2 HR,12 RBI) in the 8th inning proved to be the difference in a 2-1 Montreal loss to Chicago. Mike Krukow (3-3,3.27 ERA) and 3 relievers: Donnie Moore (1.23 ERA), Willie Hernandez (0.82 ERA) and Bruce Sutter (4.35 ERA), shut down the Expos on 5 hits and 1 unearned run.

Here is a bunch of interesting facts about this game. First off, it is the first time that 3 players with the same name have ever started in the same game. Seems as if Glendale have a DH named Javier Garcia as well - all unrelated. On the related front, Glendale starter Bob Hicks is the older brother of our very own Jim Hicks. After fanning Jim in the 1st inning, Bob would drill his brother in the back in the 5th. Jim would get a measure of revenge by stealing 2nd and later scoring on a double by Daniel Jones. Our starter, Jason Carter would have elbow trouble and need to leave the game in the 4th, so I used my well rested bullpen of Crouch, Tommy Malone and Combs to finish off the win.

Kent Tekulve (0-1,3.38 ERA) agrees to stay in Pittsburgh for another year after agreeing to a $549,000 deal. The Pirates also resigned reliever Grant Jackson (2-0,4.22 ERA) to a $67,000, 1-year extension.

Just 1 day after signing an extension to stay with the Giants, Jim Barr (6-1,2.73 ERA) shuts out Reds on just 4 hits in a 2-0 win and spoiling another superb performance by Cincinnati phenom Paul Moskau. Moskau (1.85 ERA) pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed just 3 hits before giving way to Mario Soto (0-1,4.91 ERA), who rewarded his efforts by giving up 1 run each in the 8th and 9th innings. Jack Clark (.355,14 RBI) singles and drives in a run in the 8th inning off of Soto, breaking a scoreless tie and raising Clark's hitting streak to 30 games.

Philadelphia shuts down the Padres 4-0 as Jim Lonborg (1-1,3.08 ERA) and Gene Garber (11 SV,1.32 ERA) combine on a 4-hitter. Richie Hebner (.311,16 RBI) collects 3 hits and Mike Schmidt (.225,8 HR,22 RBI) adds 2 home runs to power the Philles offense. Rollie Fingers (2-1,5.51 ERA) makes his 1st start in 4 years and takes the loss - but pitches well, giving up 1 earned run and 2 hits in 3 innings of work. Fingers replaced Bob Owchinko, who was put on the 15-day disabled list earlier this week.

Milwaukee scores a run in each of the last 3 innings, the last coming on a walkoff home run by Sal Bando (.188,3 HR,8 RBI) leading off the bottom of the 9th off of closer Steve Foucault (3-1,3.86 ERA) to lead the Brewers to a 3-2 win over Detroit.

You would think I would have a pretty good chance to have a perfect 7 win week against a .500 team like Glendale. You would think that having Danny Patterson on the mound would virtually assure us of a win. You would think. Patterson finished the 1st, but complained of a sore arm in the dugout afterward and could not go on. Bobby Charles came on and pitched decent considering the short notice but nowhere near Patterson-esque. Patterson's injury along with the injury to Jason Carter leaves us with just 3 starters and Charles, who is more of a long reliever than a starter.

Seattle resigns reserve RF Ken Henderson (.303,1 HR,3 RBI) to a 1-year extension worth $97,000.

Mets starter Tom Seaver (3-4,3.95 ERA) allows just 3 hits in a 9-1 complete game win over the Dodgers. The only run the Dodgers scored was unearned due to an error by 3B Roy Staiger (3rd error) in the 4th. Dave Kingman (.239,6 HR,18 RBI) hit a bases loaded triple, a 3-run home run and came within a double of hitting the cycle in accumulating 6 RBI for the day. Mets LF Steve Henderson (.215,12 RBI) also had 3 hits and scored 2 runs in the winning effort.

The Indians score a run in the top of the 9th off White Sox starter Ken Kravec (3-5,2.97 ERA) with singles from Rico Carty (.288), Bill Melton (.250) and Larvell Blanks (.300) to win the game 3-2. Jim Bibby (3-5,5.20 ERA) gives up 4 hits in 8 innings to get the win and Jim Kern (4.15 ERA) picks up his 7th save. Carty would score all 3 Indians runs.

Errors by 2B Manny Trillo (3rd), 3B Dave Rosello (1st) and LF Greg Gross (3rd) lead to 4 unearned runs in the Cubs 8-5 loss to Montreal. Ellis Valentine (.256) has 3 hits and Gary Carter adds 3 RBI and his 7th home run of the year for the Expos. Carter (.233,9 HR,22 RBI) would go on to blast 2 more homers in the double-header nightcap as the Expos swept both games with the Cubs with the 12-2 win.

St. Louis pitchers hold the Braves to 1 hit, a single by Cito Gaston (.211), but lose the game 6-1 when Atlanta scores 5 unearned runs in the 5th inning from 2 errors by 3B Ken Oberkfell (his first 2 of the year), combined with 3 walks from reliever John D'Acquisto (2-1,1 BS,5.19 ERA). For their part, Braves pitchers Eddie Solomon (2-2,4.43 ERA) and Mike Marshall (2.70 ERA) held the Cardinals to just 2 Keith Hernandez (.390) hits the entire game.

This game should have never went to extra innings as we managed to leave 22 men standed on the basepaths throughout the game. Props go to our starter Mike Haynes, who went 9 2/3 innings and gave up only 5 hits and 2 earned runs. Glendale would score 2 in the 4th, but we would claw our way back with a run in the 5th and 8th to tie it all up at 2. It would stay that way until the 12th when Tommy Malone showed a little wildness and loaded the bases with 2 walks and then give up the granny to Floyd Holt to pretty much seal the deal. Hot hitting Daniel Jones left the game late with a strained rib cage muscle trying to break up a double play and is day-to-day.

Cleveland loses LF Johnny Grubb (.328,4 HR,24 RBI) for 1-2 weeks after spraining his ankle in a 6-1 win over the Twins. Originally thought to be broken, doctors later diagnosed Grunn with a severe sprain that will take a few weeks to heal. John Lowenstein will be taking Grubb's place in LF. In the game, Rod Carew (.367) went 4-for-4 with 2 doubles for the Twins, but little else went Minnesota's way as Wayne Garland (3-3,4.41 ERA) went the distance while giving up 10 hits and striking out 5.

The Yankees score 7 runs in the top of the 10th to beat Oakland 9-2 - not having an extra-base hit the enitre game. Four of the runs were unearned as 3B Wayne Gross (his 6th) and C Jeff Newman (2nd) both committed crucial errors to keep the inning alive and reliever Dave Giusti (2-3,4.64 ERA) added to the mess by walking 2 batters himself. Lou Pinella (.234) was a perfect 3-for-3 and reserve 3B Fernando Gonzalez (.237) delievered 3 hits of his own for the Yankees, giving Sparky Lyle (2-1,1.74) the win in relief.

The Orioles commit 4 errors in losing to Seattle 8-1, dropping the record of Jim Palmer (3.66 ERA) to 3-5 and giving Glenn Abbott (1-5,5.94 ERA) his 1st win of the season. Palmer (1st error), Ken Singleton (1), Pat Kelly (1) and Eddie Murray (3) committed the errors.

Solid starting pitching kept the game close until the offense finally woke up with 4 in the 7th and 2 in the 8th. Javier "The LF" Garcia (.312), Eugene Thompson (.252) and Steven Larsen (.273) all had 3 hits for us, however one of our stars, 3B Brandon Hayden went down with a strained rotator cuff and looks to be out for 5 weeks, and it feels like we are getting more injuries everyday - down 2 starting pitchers and 2 starting position players at the moment. Thank god for no roster limits. Now if I can just teach my shortstops some new positions...
