Chicago will be without one of thier main bullpen components for about a week as Donnie Moore (1 SV,1.62 ERA) has caught a bad case of strep throat and has been banished from the clubhouse until he is over it. Moore is understandably bummed out about it.

Los Angeles has locked up starter Tommy John for 4 more years as the left-hander signed an extension worth $8,784,000 at $2,196,000 a year. The Dodgers are reeling, having lost 6 straight.

Dan Meyer (.324) scores on a fielders choice by Bill Stien (.192) in the top of the 9th to give Seattle a 9-8 win over Oakland. Catcher Bob Stinson (.236) goes 4-for-4 and Julio Cruz (.322,13 RBI) adds 3 hits, including his 4th homer for Seattle as every starter has at least 1 hit and 18 as a team. Oakland starter Vida Blue (3.96 ERA) lasts only 1 2/3 innings as errors by C Jeff Newman (4th) and 3B Wayne Gross (7th) lead to 4 unearned runs. Don Baylor (.276) has 3 hits for the A's in the losing effort.

The Twins win 5-4 over California by using an error by defensive replacement Mario Guerrero (1st error) to thier advantage in the top of the 9th inning as Larry Hisle (.266) scores on a fly ball by Butch Wynegar (.291,21 RBI) that would have been the 3rd out had Guerrero not misplayed a grounder earlier in the inning. Lyman Bostock (.299,3 HR,25 RBI) has 3 hits and 3 RBI and Jeff Holly (1-2,4.11 ERA) pitches a scoreless 8th for the win.

After Cubs CF Greg Gross tied the score in the top of the 9th on a wild pitch by Atlanta pitcher Mike Marshall (2-1,1 BS,3.14 ERA), Biff Pocoroba (.282) singles home Willie Montanez from 2nd base off Bruce Sutter (1-2,4.50 ERA) in the bottom of the frame to give the Braves a 3-2 win over Chicago. Phil Niekro (4.62 ERA) goes 8 innings for Atlanta, giving up just 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 6.

After 4 hours and 26 minutes of play, Ellis Valentine (.262,4 HR,19 RBI) sends the fans home happy with a 2-run blast off Rick Sawyer (0-1,4.15 ERA) in the bottom of the 14th inning to give the Expos a 7-5 win over San Diego. Mickey Stanley (.211,9 RBI) has 3 hits for Montreal, including his 3rd home run of the year while 1B Mike Ivie (.305) had 3 hits as well for the Padres.

Don Sutton (5.67 ERA) falls to 0-6 as 2 errors by Ron Cey (2nd & 3rd) and 1 by Davy Lopes (6th) lead to 6 unearned Pittsburgh runs en route to 10-2 Pirates victory. Ed Ott (.281,2 HR,10 RBI) hits 2 home runs and drives in 4 runs while Dave Parker (.312,10 HR,33 RBI) collects 3 RBI with his 3 hits for Pittsburgh. Pirates starter Jerry Reuss (5-1,2.59 ERA) did his part, shutting down the Dodgers on just 3 hits and 2 earned runs in 8 innings of work.

Steve Carlton (4-3,3.26 ERA) and 2 relievers give up just 2 hits to the Astros in Philadelphia's 2-0 win. Carlton only goes 6 innings and 93 pitches, only giving up just a single to pitcher J.R. Richard before being replaced with Warren Brusstar. Richard (2-4,4.41 ERA) pitched a complete game, giving up 10 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 10.

The hitting streak of Jack Clark (.353,5 HR,14 RBI), now standing at 34 games, is put on hold as he fractures his hand in a collission at 2nd base with Mike Phillips while breaking up a double play attempt in the 5th inning. Clark had continued his streak earlier that inning by bunting for a single off Mets pitcher Jon Matlack. Word is the Giants will recall 2B Rob Andrews and place Clark on the 15-day DL. The Giants would go on to win the game 5-2.

Injury Report
- MR Donnie Moore is suffering from strep throat. He is expected to miss about a week.
- SP Jack Clark suffered a fractured hand. He is expected to miss about 1-2 weeks.

We are struggling at this point. Our bullpen is getting tired due to the extra work we are giving them which is due to the depleted rotation which is due to the injury bug. Curse you baseball gods!! Jerry Clayton has been rock solid for us until today as he gave up the 3-run bomb to Robert Willis in the top of the 9th to cost us the game. Overall, we have stopped hitting - the losses of Brandon Hayden and Daniel Jones have really put a damper on our offensive mood. Jones should be back soon I hope. Hayden I am afraid, will be awhile.

Milwaukee's Bob McClure (2-3,2 BS,1.96 ERA) goes nuclear again as he walks Ted Cox in the bottom of the 9th then gives up 3 consecutive singles to Butch Hobson (.200), Bernie Carbo (.287) and Rick Burleson (.232) to give Boston the win, 6-5. The win comes at a cost for the Red Sox however as Carl Yastrzemski (.287,8 HR,25 RBI) suffered a strained groin in the 5th inning and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks. The Brewers had taken the lead in the top of the inning when Cecil Cooper (.338,23 RBI) hit his 7th home run of the year - his 4th hit of the game.

White Sox starter Ken Kravec (2.89 ERA) leaves the game after the 2nd inning and by the end of Chicago's 5-4 loss to Detroit, the trainers have confirmed the Kravec will miss the next 4 weeks with a hyperextended elbow. Mark Fidrych (5-3,3.26 ERA) goes 8 innings, giving up 9 hits and strikes out 6 while Tiger CF Ron LeFlore goes 4-for-4 (.277,9 RBI) in the Detroit win.

Doug Rau (3-5,5.31 ERA) comes to the Dodgers rescue and helps break LA's 6-game losing streak with a 3-0 shutout win over Pittsburgh. Rau gives up 5 hits and strikes out 5 while 1B Steve Garvey (.278) has 3 of the Dodgers 7 hits to keep LA from falling farther back in the NL West race.

Gary Templeton (.288,12 RBI) leads the Cardinals 22-hit assault with 6-for-6 effort of his own as St. Louis destroys San Francisco 19-7 at Busch Stadium. Ted Simmons (.380,10 HR,37 RBI), Bake McBride (.373) and Ken Reitz (.286) all have 3 hits for the Cards and Simmons adds 2 home runs and 7 RBI as every starter in the St, Louis lineup has 1 hit and scored at least 1 run. Eric Rasmussen (6-2,4.10 ERA) cruises to the easy victory even though he gives up 6 earned runs in 6 innings.

Hal McRae hits a sacrifice fly to tie the game and Tom Poquette (.293,9 RBI) gets his 4th hit of the game, an RBI single all off closer Jim Kern (0-3,2 BS,4.76 ERA) in the bottom of the 9th to score an 8-7 win over the Indians. Al Cowens (.299) has 3 hits, including 2 doubles for the Royals while Paul Dade (.280) has 3 singles for the Tribe.

Injury Report
- 1B Carl Yastrzemski suffered a strained groin. He is expected to miss about 2-3 weeks.
- SP Ken Kravec suffered a hyperextended elbow. He is expected to miss about 4 weeks.
- 1B Jerry Tabb suffered a concussion. He is expected to miss about 2 weeks.

POG: Ronald Reed (MAN) 3-5, 1 RBI, 2B

The team is struggling to come through with the clutch hits that used to be no problem before. Started catcher Jared White in RF again and put shortstop Shawn Osorio in CF because my outfielders are complaining about fatigue. I am hoping at some point, White will learn the position and make the transfer full time to the outfield. Having White and Osorio in the OF probably contributed to the increase in hits Derek Todd gave up today, but he still kept things close, but we left 12 men on base as a team and squandered countless scoring opportunies with runners in scoring position. To top in off, we have let the other teams in the division back into the race as 5 of the 6 teams are within 1 game of the lead.

Backup catcher Joe Ferguson (.291,2 HR,10 RBI) hit the jackpot when the Astros resigned him at $6,280,000 over 4 years at $1,570,000 for the first 3 years and a player option for the 4th. Ferguson has a career average of .240 and as long as Cliff Johnson is ahead of him, I don't see him earning this much. Of course maybe Johnson is trade bait now.

The Astros also resigned SP Joe Niekro (6-1,3.70 ERA) for 1 more year worth $239,000.

Milt Wilcox (5-4,2.21 ERA) and Silvio Martinez (0-1,2.00 ERA) both pitch complete games, but it is Wilcox who comes away with the win, pitching a 3-hit shutout to beat Chicago 2-0. Wilcox would strikeout 4 and walked 5 while earning his 5th win of the year. Martinez pitched well, scattering 7 hits and only 1 walk, but a key 2-out 2 RBI double from Steve Kemp (.276,14 RBI) would be the deciding factor.

Reggie Jackson (.298,4 HR,28 RBI) hits a 3-run shot off of Jim Palmer (3-6,3.88 ERA) in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Yankees an eventual 5-4 win over Baltimore. The win gives Ron Guidry (6-1,2.61 ERA) his 6th win of the season while giving Palmer his 6th loss. Mickey Rivers (.390) adds 3 hits for New York in the win.

Phil Garner (.276,13 RBI) triples home Omar Moreno in the bottom of the 13th inning off Dennis Lewallyn (2-2,2.55 ERA) to beat the Dodgers 4-3. It is Garner's 5th triple of the year and ties him for the league lead. Terry Forster (2-0,2.79 ERA) gets the win in relief.

After Ellis Valentine (.258,5 HR,21 RBI) hits a 2-run blast off of Randy Jones (3.81 ERA) in the bottom of the 9th to tie the score at 2, Dave Winfield (.272,9 HR,23 RBI) sends a 2-run rocket to left field off Bill Atkinson (0-2,3.71 ERA) in the top of the 14th to lead San Diego to a 4-2 win over Montreal. Jones would also hit the first home run of his career in the 3rd inning against Hal Dues. Paul Siebert (1-0,4.26 ERA) pitches 3 scoreless innings in relief for the win.

RF Champ Summers (.200,3 HR,5 RBI), replacing the injured Ken Griffey, hits 2 solo home runs and scores 3 runs to lead Cincinnati to a 9-1 crushing of the Mets. Pat Zachry (3-1,2.70 ERA) goes 8 innings in the win, giving up just 4 hits and striking out 5 while allowing 1 earned run.

Trades
Trade between Cleveland and St. Louis :
Cleveland gets :

MR Clay Carroll (36) - $607,950 / 2
_ STL: 1-1 / 8.10 ERA / 13 G / 13.1 IP / 12 ER / 4 BB / 6 K / 1.73 WHIP
C Riley Smith (26) - A

St. Louis gets :
2B Duane Kuiper (26) - $68,310 / 1
_ CLE: .344 / 64 AB / 10 R / 0 HR / 5 RBI / .425 OBP / .375 SLG

It looks as if Cleveland is satified enough with Bobby Grich as the new 2B as they practically gave Kuiper to the Cardinals. I've said it before that Grich may be the 2B of the future for the Tribe, but Kuiper had been hitting the ball so well before his injury a few weeks ago. I find the timing of this trade odd as I felt they could have waited to make a decision. Apparently Grich had done enough to win the job while Kuiper was on the DL, because Kuiper had just been activated when this trade happened. On some side notes, St. Louis optioned 2B Ken Oberkfell to AAA Chesapeake to make room for Kuiper and Alfredo Griffin has been promoted to take the backup role behind Grich.

Edge: At this very moment, it is St. Louis. Grich just hasn't shown enough while Kuiper was hurt to make this trade viable to me. I have no crystal ball to see into the future, but it seems Cleveland gave up to fast on Kuiper.

Injury Report
- SS Ivan DeJesus suffered a finger blister. He is day-to-day for about 5 days.

The offense still isn't clicking on all cylinders, but Miguel Tirado sure was tonight. Twice he was able to deliver with runners on base to help lead us to a 5-2 lead going into the 7th inning. Bobby Charles pitched brilliantly for a spot starter, but began to wear down in the 6th. So instead of leaving him in too long like I have been known to do, I brought in Tommy Malone to hold the barndoor shut. Instead, he let the whole damn herd out as Manti scored 5 runs in the inning off 3 walks, 2 hits and an error by Danny Mac. We have just gotten swept for the first time this season - by a team who was ranked 25 in the power rankings last week. Sigh.

Texas starter Bert Blyleven (2.74 ERA) runs his record to 8-1 with a 8-1 victory over the Blue Jays. Blyleven gives up 6 hits while striking out 10 in the complete game win. Jeff Byrd (4-3,3.34 ERA) takes the loss for Toronto.

Greg Luzinski (.281,31 RBI) hits his league-tying 12th home run to help the Phillies to a 8-6 win over Houston. Bob Boone (.286,2 HR,5 RBI) would go 4-for-5, Gary Maddox (.285,9 RBI) would add 3 hits and Larry Christenson (3-3,4.96 ERA) goes 7 solid innings giving up just 3 earned runs for Philadelphia.

New York scores 2 runs in the top of the 9th off a 2-RBI pinch double from Mike Vail (.291,9 RBI) then watches as Cincinnati scores 2 runs in the bottom of the frame, but come up short 5-4. Dave Kingman (.245,20 RBI) has 3 hits for the Mets, including his 8th home run of the year and Skip Lockwood (1.33 ERA) gives up 2 earned runs but earns his league leading 16th save. Dan Driessen (.329,22 RBI) goes 4-for-5 and George Foster (.293,43 RBI) hits his league-tying 12th home run for the Reds in the loss.

The Spaceman has landed, at least for 3 more years in a Red Sox uniform as Bill Lee (2-2,4.85 ERA) signed a contract extension worth a total of $1,395,000 at $465,000 per year.

Pittsburgh resigns 34-year old LH starter Jim Rooker (2-2,4.80 ERA) to a 1-year extension
worth $93,000.

Mets starter Nino Espinosa improved his record to 6-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.98 while pitching a 5-hit 4-0 shutout against the Pirates. An error by Pirates RF Dave Parker led to 3 unearned runs and spoiled a solid performance by Pirate starter Odell Jones (1-5,502 ERA). 2B Leo Randle (.286) had 3 hits and scored 2 runs to lead the Mets assault.

John Denny (2-4,4.13 ERA) faced just 33 batters in leading the Cardinals to a 6-0 blanking of San Francisco. Denny gave up just 4 hits and walked only 3 while Keith Hernandez (.434,22 RBI) continued his torrid hitting, going 4-for-5 with a double, an RBI and scoring 2 runs. CF Tony Scott (.319) added 3 hits and newly acquired 2B Duane Kuiper (.333 since trade) added 2 more as the Cardinals as a team amassed 17 hits without hitting a home run.

Milwaukee 3B Jim Gantner (.280,9 RBI) singles home Sixto Lezcano in the top of the 13th off of Baltimore closer Tippy Martinez (2-2,2.45 ERA) to give the Brewers a 3-2 victory. Murphy, Matthews and C Biff Pocoroba would each have 3 hits in the extra inning affair, while Doug Radar would achieve the feat for San Diego. Braves reliever Mike Davey would pitch 4 scoreless innings to get the win.

The day off seemed to rejuvenate the team, if only for 1 inning as Eugene Thompson hit a 2-run double and Ben Ball added another RBI in the 1st to put us up 3-0 and we hung on from there. Mike Haynes pitched great but his control faltered in the 6th, hastening his early exit. Didn't want to screw around and lose this game so I went to my closer Bob Crouch early and pitched 2 1/3 scorless innings before giving way to Jesus Vera who picked up his 1st save of the season.

Pittsburgh continues resigning talent, this time locking up 2B Rennie Stennett for another year worth $246,000.

The first three hitters in the Milwaukee lineup accounted for 12 of the Brewers 18 hits in a 12-7 win over Baltimore. Robin Yount (.234,13 RBI) had 5 hits and scored 4 runs, Dick Davis (.385) added 3 hits, and Cecil Cooper (.343,32 RBI) ripped 4 hits and an amazing 8 RBI. Mike Parrott (0-1,6.10 ERA) took the loss in relief of Jim Palmer (4.06 ERA), who struggled giving up 6 runs (4 earned) in 5 2/3 innings. Milwaukee reliever Sam Hinds (3-0,2.95 ERA) gets the win, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Moose Haas (3.68 ERA), who gave up 6 unearned runs in just 4 innings. Baltimore 3B Elliott Maddox commited his 14th error of the season.

SS Bill Russell scrambles home from third in the bottom of the 11th inning on a ground ball by Steve Garvey off Astros reliever Ken Forsch (0-2,2.53 ERA) to give the Dodgers a 3-2 victory. Houston C Cliff Johnson (.304) delivered 3 hits in a losing effort while RF Reggie Smith (.344) had 3 hits for Los Angeles. Dennis Lewallyn (3-2,2.41 ERA) pitched 1 scoreless inning to get the win.

California scores 3 times in the top of the 9th off Tiger reliever Steve Foucault (3-2,5.17 ERA) thanks to doubles from Gil Flores (.174,4 RBI) and Bruce Bochte (.293,18 RBI) and held off a late scoring threat in the bottom of the frame to defeat Detroit 5-4. Rance Mulliniks (.328) has 3 hits and starter Paul Hartzell (2.81 ERA) improved to 6-2 for the Angels.

Most of the team are stunned that we did it, but we pulled this out in the bottom of the 9th when pinch hitter Lucas Carlton doubled home Shawn Osorio to tie the game and then Jared White singled home Carlton to win it - all with 2 outs. I may have pulled starter Josh Thomas too soon, as the bullpen failed to hold the slim 1-0, but the baseball gods were smiling upon us this day. The in kept us in a 1st place tie with the Bluefins of Staunton.

Giants pitcher Randy Moffitt sends a Manny Sarmiento pitch 440 feet over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the 13th to give San Francisco a 6-5 win over Cincinnati. The home run is the first of Moffitt's career and his first at-bat of the 1977 season. This will hereby coin the phrase of "giving up a Moffitt" whenever a pitcher gives up a home run (in particular a game winning home run) to an opposing pitcher.

Ron Guidry (2.33 ERA) improves to 7-1 by holding the Rangers to just 4 hits in a 1-0 Yankees victory. Guidry outpitched Texas pitcher Gaylord Perry (6-4,2.06 ERA), who went the distance as well, giving up just 6 hits and 1 unearned run on an error by Bump Wills (his 2nd). In the nightcap, Bert Blyleven (2.73 ERA) wins his league leading 9th game and Len Barker (0.57 ERA) gets his American League leading 15th save as the Rangers defeat New York, 5-2.

Kansas City scores 3 times in the top of the 10th to defeat Baltimore 6-3 in the first game of a double header. Rookie 1B Eddie Murray (.232) has 3 hits for the Orioles. Baltimore would scatter 11 hits, including 3 by CF Al Bumbry (.217) and DH Lee May (.239), but were unable to score in the night game, losing 6-0. Paul Splittorff (4-3,4.24 ERA) would pitch 7 1/3 scoreless innings and 1B Pete LaCock (.406) would have 3 hits for the Royals.

Pinch runner Ken McMullen scores on single by 2B Tito Fuentes (.211,11 RBI) off of Angels reliever Mickey Scott (0-1,2.35 ERA) in the bottom of the 13th to give the Tigers a 4-3 win. Fuentes would have 4 hits in the game and Phil Mankowski (.395,5 HR,14 RBI) would add 3 more as together they matched the entire California lineup. Hobbled Detroit starter Mark Fidrych (2.99 ERA) went 10 1/3 innings, giving up 3 runs (1 earned) and Angels closer Dick Drago (5.71 ERA) blows his 4th save.

3B Buddy Bell (.272,26 RBI) hits a single off of Seattle pitcher Dave Pagan (1-2,0.79 ERA) in the bottom of the 12th to score Rick Manning and give Cleveland a 4-3 win over the Mariners. Ruppert Jones (.221), Dan Meyer (.333,14 RBI) and Leroy Stanton (.260,12 RBI) all have 3 hits for Seattle. The win combined with Baltimore's 2 losses moves Cleveland out of the cellar in the AL East by a 1/2 game.

The St. Louis Cardinals win their 8th game in a row with a 3-1 victory over Philadelphia. Eric Rasmussen (3.71 ERA) moved to 7-2, scattering 8 hits in 8 innings and Buddy Schultz (6.06 ERA) pitches the 9th for his 13th save.

The Dodgers extend the contract of reserve shortstop Ted Martinez for another year at $234,000.

The Expos pitching staff took a hit when starter Hal Dues (1-2,4.03 ERA) left the game in immense pain in the 6th inning of Montreal's 4-2 loss to the Cubs. The optomistic outlook was for not as the injury will take at least a year to rehabilitate. No word as of yet who will be taking Dues' spot in the rotation, but a possibility would be reliever Tom Walker who has posted a 0.77 ERA out of the bullpen.

Pitcher Pat Zachry (4-1,2.17 ERA) was masterful in the Reds 5-0 win over San Francisco, holding the Giants to just 2 hits while striking out 8. Joe Morgan (.258,2 HR,22 RBI) and Dan Driessen (.333,5 HR,24 RBI) each hit home runs, along with George Foster (.289) who delivered his 13th HR and 45th RBI - both league leaders.

Sandy Alomar scores on a Pat Scanlon (.273,3 RBI) pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 9th after stealing 3rd base to give San Diego a 4-3 win over the Braves. Padres starter Randy Jones (6-4,3.72 ERA) goes the distance, scattering 9 hits without the benifit of a single strikeout. Mike Marshall (2-2,3.57 ERA) takes the loss, giving up singles to 3 of the 4 hitters he faced.

In a battle of pitchers with sub-2.50 ERA's, it was the wildness of David Gillespie (2.32 ERA) that would spell his undoing as he had 3 wild pitches, 2 hit batters and 3 walks in the 4th inning in which we scored all of our runs. Mike Haynes (2.09 ERA) looked brilliant as he was never in trouble and even though he was cruising, I took him out when he hit the 120-pitch mark. The Indians win their 3rd game in a row to move percentage points ahead of Toronto for 5th place in the Eastern Division. Jim Bibby (5-5,4.40 ERA) pitches a 1-hit shutout and outshines a 5-hitter from Oakland's Rick Langford (3-5,3.22 ERA) in the 1-0 Cleveland win. Sheldon Mallory (.296) managed the only Athletics hit with a single in the 5th.

Chris Knapp (4-5,4.84 ERA) and Bart Johnson (2 SV,5.14 ERA) combine to hold the Yankees to 3 hits as the White Sox squeak out a 1-0 victory on a Lamar Johnson (.245,15 RBI) RBI single in the 5th. Yankees starter Ed Figueroa (3-6,4.54 ERA) went the distance in the loss, giving up 7 hits and striking out 4 while giving up just the 1 run.

Behind the pitching of rookie John Urrea (8-0,2.26 ERA), St. Louis wins their 10th straight, 10-3 over Montreal. Urrea would go 7 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits and striking out 8. Keith Hernandez (.437,3 HR,27 RBI) continues to punish opposing pitchers hitting a 2-run double and a 3-run home run to account for half of the Cardinals' runs.

San Diego hitters were silenced by the Houston combination of Floyd Bannister (3-2,3.97 ERA) and Joe Sambito (14 SV,1.27 ERA) - who held the Padres to just 2 hits by Gene Richards (.315) in the Astros 1-0 win. Cliff Johnson (.313,22 RBI) provided the only scoring in the game by hitting his 6th home run of the season off of Padres starter Bob Shirley (3-5,3.92 ERA).

California used 2 hits off reliever Dennis DeBarr (3.63 ERA), a walk and an error by 2B Pedro Garcia (his 1st) to plate 3 runs in the top of the 11th to defeat the Blue Jays 3-0 in Toronto. Jerry Remy (.194) delivered 3 hits and Frank Tanana (1.90 ERA) maintained the league lead in ERA by going 8 innings and giving up 4 earned runs. Dick Drago (5.12 ERA) gets his 3rd win in relief.

Minnesota solidified its starting rotation for a few years by resigning their #1 starter Dave Goltz to a 2-year extention worth $2,284,000 at $1,142,000 per year.

After a 13-33 start, Braves owner and GM Ted Turner canned manager Dave Bristol after the Braves' 3-1 loss to San Francisco. Bristol was in his 2nd season as the Braves manager and had a record of 70-92 in 1976. His career record as a major league manager stands at 525 wins and 599 losses over the course of 9 seasons. Vern Benson has been names as interim manager until a permanent one can be found.

The 1-0 scores continue as Tigers pitcher Dave Rozema (3-5,3.71 ERA) shuts down Seattle allowing just 2 hits while stiking out 5 and walking 3. Seattle starter Glen Abbott (1-7,5.04 ERA) was just as good as he allowed only 4 hits. One of those, however was a home run in the bottom of the first to leadoff man Ron LeFlore (.279,2 HR,11 RBI). "I don't have many games like this." Abbott said afterward, "It's a shame I lost it on the very first batter."

Toronto would gain a measure of revenge as California reliever Mickey Scott (0-2,2.84 ERA) gives up consecutive singles followed by an error by 2B Mario Guerrero (his 2nd) to load the bases. Scott would then work the count full on Willie Horton before issuing a walk on a disputed check swing call to give the Blue Jays a 7-6 win. "I don't know if it was the rain or the cold up here (in Toronto), but the ump blew that call - Horton went around." Scott would blast after the game.

Sandy Alomar (.290,17 RBI) comes through again in the clutch as he singles home Dave Roberts in the bottom of the 9th off of Houston reliever Ken Forsch (0-3,2.91 ERA) to give San Diego a 5-4 win. Forsch was up 0-2 on the previous batter, Luis Melendez, before a splitter came in and nailed Melendex in the thigh to bring up Alomar. Gene Richards (.324) collected 3 hits for San Diego in the win.

21-game winner last year Don Sutton falls to 0-7 after an 8-3 loss to Cincinnati. Sutton would only go 3 innings, giving up 5 hits and 5 runs (4 earned) while striking out only 1. Sutton's ERA has ballooned to 6.19 and many feel his spot in the rotation may be in jeoprody. Mike Caldwell (3.44 ERA) picks up his 7th victory for the Reds.

He almost got there before a 5-1 game turned into an emergency save situation for Tommy Malone (3.32 ERA) with the score 5-3 with a runner on. John Hicks (.295,8 RBI) shined delivering 3 very key hits for us good guys while Mark Denton (.304) had 3 of his own for Fountain Hills.

Sutton would only go 3 innings, giving up 5 hits and 5 runs (4 earned) while stiking out only 1. Sutton's ERA has ballooned to 6.19 and many feel his spot in the rotation may be in jeoprody. Mike Caldwell (3.44 ERA) picks up his 7th victory for the Reds.

Injury Report
- C Jerry Grote suffered a strained back muscle. He is expected to miss about 1 week.
- 3B Buddy Bell suffered a strained tricep muscle. He is expected to miss about 2 weeks.

I almost repeated my mistake from last game by trying to get Derek Todd (4.20 ERA) a complete game.

The Texas Rangers have locked up their staff ace, Bert Blyleven, until the after the 1982 season with a total contract worth $11,769.666. The deal is end loaded, with Blyleven making $2,216,333 in 1978 & 1979, moving up to $2,329,000 in 1980, $2,446,000 in 1981, and $2,562,000 in 1982.

"It's not how old you are, it's how old you feel." said Giants 1B Willie McCovey as he smiled at the post game press conference after his 3 home runs helped San Francisco defeat Atlanta 8-5. "I work on my mechanics every day and this goes to show the effort pays off." Braves pitcher Phil Niekro gave up 2 of the bombs to McCovey, the most important being a 3-run shot in the 7th that put the Giants up for good. McCovey drove in 6 runs for the day and moved past Stan Musial into 13th place on the career home run list with 477. In a losing effort, Braves CF Rowland Office (.272) had 3 hits.

Pirates pitcher Jerry Reuss (6-2) kept the Cubs from putting anything together as Pittsburgh destroyed Chicago 10-0 on Reuss' 4-hitter. Reuss threw just 115 pitches, stricking out 3 and walking 2 while lowering his ERA to 2.46. SS Phil Garner (278, 15 RBI) had 3 hits and scored 3 times and 1B Willie Stargell (.246, 13 RBI) drove in 4 runs to lead the Pirates 14-hit attack.

Pinch hitter Mike Hegan (.258, 10 RBI) hits a single off AL saves leader Len Barker (0-1, 1.04 ERA) and scores Sal Bando from 2nd to give Milwaukee a 6-5 win over the Rangers. 1B Cecil Cooper (.342, 36 RBI) continued hitting the ball well as his 3 hits add to his major league leading total of 66. Rangers 1B Jim Fregosi (.281, 5 HR, 10 RBI) drives in 4 runs with his 2nd inning grand slam.

It came down to the final at-bat, but the Yankees would prevail over Chicago 3-2 when LF Lou Pinella (.223, 20 RBI) hits a 2-out single off White Sox closer Jack Kucek (1-2, 3.71 ERA, 3 BS) in the bottom of the 9th to score Graig Nettles from 2nd base. Nettles led off the inning with a ground ball to Chicago 1B Lance Johnson, but Kucek was not able to handle the toss while covering 1st base for an error.

Detroit pitchers Vern Ruhle (3-4, 3.43 ERA) and Steve Foucault (10 Sv, 4.19 ERA) combined to hold the Mariners to just 3 hits in the Tigers 3-0 victory. The loss is Seattle's 5th in a row and leads manager Darrell Johnson to a postgame tirade in which he calls his teams performance "effortless" and "pathetic".

The Cardinals streak of consecutive victories end with a 6-0 loss to Montreal. Expos pitcher Jackie Brown (2-7, 4.97 ERA) scattered 7 hits in going the distance while throwing just 99 pitches - 69 for strikes. CF Andre Dawson (.290, 5 HR, 32 RBI) and 3B Larry Parrish (.417, 1 HR, 4 RBI) each would have 3 hits, each including solo home runs while RF Ellis Valentine (.247, 6 HR, 24 RBI) would add a 3-run shot of his own.

Injury Report
- RF Rick Miller suffered a tender shoulder. He is day-to-day for about 4 days.
- CF Al Cowens suffered a bruised. He is day-to-day for about 3 days.

Lately, when we score runs - we do it in bunches. It was a 1-1 ballgame until the 6th when we sent 9 people to the plate and scored 5 runs. Javier Garcia (.256, 17 RBI) hit a 2-run single with the bases loaded to help blow the game open while Jared White (.300, 13 RBI) added 3 hits and an RBI to seal the deal. I was a tad cautious with starter Jason Carter (2.35 ERA), as I pulled him after just 5 2/3 innings with the score tied at 1 and runners on 1st and 3rd. Tommy Malone (2.95 ERA) came on and shined - earning a much deserved 1st win of the year.

With a record of 13-35 and after losing the last 7 games, Atlanta owner and GM Ted Turner fires pitching coach Johnny Sain. Turner has yet to fill his managerial vacancy after firing Dave Bristol 2 days ago.

The Athletics front office was all smiles this afternoon after announcing that they have signed their #1 starter, Vida Blue, to a 4-year contract extention totalling $7,204,000 at $1,801,000 per year. Blue is 115-69 with a 2.83 ERA in his 8 seasons with Oakland, including going 5-2 this year. Blue would go on to pitch a complete game 5-hitter against Detroit, but would lose 1-0 to Mark Fidrych (6-3, 2.72 ERA) and his enormous leg brace - who held Oakland to only 3 hits and 7 strikeouts.

New York's Nino Espinosa (2.61 ERA) raises his record to 7-2 after a 3-0 win over the Expos in Shea Stadium. Espinosa allows just 4 hits and did not allow any runners to reach 2nd base until the 9th inning. Montreal's Dan Schatzeder (3-3, 4.88 ERA) would also go the distance in the loss.

Los Angeles fans were holding their breath when starting pitcher Doug Rau (4-5, 4.52 ERA) did not emerge from a crumpled mass at 3rd base after trying to go to 3rd from 1st on a single by Davey Lopes (.296). Unfortunately for the Dodgers, Rau was out on both accounts - both at the play at 3rd and the game - but more importantly possibly his career. Preliminary reports are that he suffered a fractured knee and will require extensive rehabilitation. The Dodgers would go on to defeat Houston 8-3 thanks to an 8th inning grand slam by 3B Lee Lacy (.192, 4 HR, 19 RBI) off of Mark Lemongello (6-4, 4.93 ERA) that blew out a close game.

The Angels used a grand slam by Bruce Bochte (.284, 4 HR, 23 RBI), 3 hits from Tony Solaita (.289) and a 2-run home run by Bobby Bonds (.176, 7 HR, 23 RBI) in the top of the 10th to defeat Cleveland, 7-5. The win would be costly, as California will be without reliever Don Kirkwood (1-0, 2 Sv, 0.00 ERA) for a few weeks after he suffered a back strain in the 8th inning. Dick Drago (4-2, 4.43 ERA) would pitch the final 2 innings for the win.

New York's Ron Guidry (8-1, 2.23 ERA) and Sparky Lyle (11 Sv, 1.42 ERA) combined to hold the Red Sox to just 3 hits, but it took a sacrifice fly by Lou Pinella in the top of the 9th lead the Yankees to a 3-1 win over Boston. LF Jim Rice (his 1st) misplayed a Mickey Rivers flyball that would have ended the game before Pinella could come to the plate. Willie Randolph (.266), Chris Chambliss (.293, 15 RBI) and Bucky Dent (.264, 8 RBI) would have all of the Yankees 9 hits.

Seattle would score 2 runs in the top of the 9th on a double by Ruppert Jones (.232, 21 RBI) off of Ranger reliever Adrian Devine (0-1, 2.89 ERA), then waits as Texas rallies. With 1 run already scored and runners on 1st and 3rd, Mariners reliever Steve Burke (3-0, 2.38 ERA) strikes out Bump Willis on 3 pitches and gets Juan Beniquez to fly out harmlessly to right to secure a 3-2 Seattle victory. Rangers starter Bert Blyleven (2.53 ERA) would go 10 1/3 innings but get a no-decision while Mariners 3B Dan Meyer (.325) had 3 hits in the win.

Baltimore scores a run in the top of the 11th off of a Ken Singleton sacrifice fly to give the Orioles an 8-7 win over Minnesota. 2B Doug DeCinces (.235, 14 RBI) has 3 hits and 2 RBI for the Orioles while Twins CF Lyman Bostock (.320, 5 HR, 33 RBI) delivered 4 hits, including a 3-run home run to cut the Baltimore lead to 2 runs.

In the bottom of the 9th against San Diego, 1B Willie McCovey (.291, 13 HR, 32 RBI) ties the game off of reliever Dave Tomlin (3-1, 1 BS, 1.52 ERA) with his 13th home run of the season and 3 batters later C Gary Alexander (.218, 7 HR, 26 RBI) ended it with his 2nd home run of the game, a 3-run blast to give the Giants a 8-5 win over San Diego. Padres SS Bill Almon (.259, 18 RBI) has 3 hits in a losing effort.

Chicago CF Greg Gross scores from 2nd on a single by 2B Manny Trillo (.251, 18 RBI) off of reliever Buddy Schultz (0-2, 3 BS, 6.16 ERA) in the top of the 10th inning to give the Cubs a 4-3 win over St. Louis. Bruce Sutter (2-2, 2.84 ERA) pitches the final 2 innings for Chicago for the win.

Injury Report
- SP Dave Freisleben suffered a damaged meniscus (knee) while pitching. He is day-to-day for about 1-2 weeks.
- SP Doug Rau suffered a fractured knee while running the bases. He is out the remainder of the 1977 season.
- MR Don Kirkwood suffered a strained back muscle while pitching. He is expected to miss about 2 weeks.

Unfortunately, it seemed that only C Jared White (.329) remembered to play offense today as he had 3 of our 5 hits, leaving the rest of the team to go a measly 2-for-28. Danny Patterson (4-1, 2.06 ERA) came back from his dead arm syndrome to pitch well, giving up 3 runs on 7 hits in 8 innings, but also hurt himself with 4 walks and a hit batter. Baltimore backup LF Andres Mora (.200, 4 HR, 10 RBI) had the game of his life as he hit 3 home runs against the Twins, the last being the game-winner off of Minnesota reliever Tom Johnson (2-2, 2.61 ERA) in the top of the 11th inning. Mora drove in 7 of the 8 Orioles runs while rookie Eddie Murray (.236) and Al Bumbry (.235, 15 RBI) added 3 hits apiece. Mora hit a 3-run blast in the 4th inning and a solo shot in the 7th - both off Minnesota starter Geoff Zahn (4.63 ERA). Larry Hisle (.283, 32 RBI) and Leo Gomez (.261) each had 3 hits in the losing cause.

Greg Luzinski (.281, 35 RBI) hit his major league leading 14th home run to help lead his Phillies over Pittsburgh, 6-4. Philadelphia starter Jim Kaat (2-1, 4.07 ERA) went 7 innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing just 1 run while striking out 6. Kaat also went 2-for-2 and raised his batting average up to .250.

LF Gene Richards (.353, 2 HR, 23 RBI) went 2-for-3 with a 2-run home run while CF George Hendrick (.296, 33 RBI) and SS Bill Almon (.266, 19 RBI) each had 3 hits in a 13-1 San Diego rout over the Giants. Richards and Hendrick will combined to drive in 7 of the runs and Padres starter Bob Shirley (4-5, 3.72 ERA) scattered 6 hits over 6 innings while striking out 6 in the win. Giants 2B Bill Madlock (.261, 6 HR, 24 RBI) had 3 hits in the loss, including San Francisco's only run on a solo home run.

You would think that when your newly named All-Star pitcher Mike Haynes (1.91 ERA) goes into the 8th inning giving up just 3 hits and a 2-0 lead everything would be fine. Nope. Leave it to me to put Haynes on 120-pitch count and replace him with screwball Jesus Vera (1 BS, 5.02 ERA) - who proceeded to give up 4 runs before giving way to Will Combs (5.89 ERA) who decided to give out 5 more. Dumbass move on my part. Miguel Tirado (.275) had 4 hits while Steve Larson (.250, 12 RBI) and John Kennedy (.246, 26 RBI) added 3 apiece as we pounded out 16 hits as a team.
