1935 - MLB Year In Review
During the early part of the season, the defending AL champion Athletics had a tough fight on their hands with Detroit, Chicago, Boston and the Browns. When the weather started heating up, so did the Brownies. The St.Louis AL club just caught fire and left all of the other teams in the dust and fighting for runnerup. The Browns led the then second place Tigers by 8 games heading into Labor Day and then went on a massive roll to clinch their first AL pennant in a dozen years with 10 games to go. The Browns were led by their pitching staff, which featured all three of the league's 20-game winners. Cy Blanton led the junior circuit with 24 wins and a 2.20 ERA plus finished second with 159 strikeouts as he was voted the AL's outstanding pitcher. AL MVP Arky Vaughan led the Philadelphia Athletics along with slugger Hank Greenberg as the White Elephants finished in second place, a distant 14 games behind the front running Browns. Detroit's rookie sensation, Mike Kreevich led the Tigers to a third place finish, 18 games behind St.Louis, as he batted .314 with 5 home runs and 94 ribbies and was voted the AL's Rookie of the Year, out voting the Red Sox's Joe Dimaggio, who finished third in the league with 28 home runs.
The National League race didn't have any suspense either. The defending world champion Pirates took the lead in June and never looked back as they coasted to a 16-game win over the second place Boston Braves and St.Louis Cardinals. Pittsburgh was led once again by their star catcher, Jimmie Foxx. All "The Beast" did was lead the major leagues in home runs with 37 plus finished third in the NL in average, batting .343 as he took home the senior circuit's MVP award. Ed Coleman also chipped in as he drove home 116 runs to finish second in the league behind the Cubs' Earl Averill. Lee Grissom was the leader of the Bucs' mound corps as he took home the league's Outstanding Pitcher award as a result of his 24 wins and 115 strikeouts. The Braves and the Cardinals battled right behind the Pirates all season long and finished in a dead heat for second place with identical 83-71 records. Boston was led by the NL's batting champion, Charlie Gehringer, who batted a major league high .357. Wally Berger provided the power for St.Louis as he clouted 30 home runs to finish second in the NL behind the Pirates' Foxx. During the first two games of the World Series, the Browns showed off their hitting power by hitting three home runs as they split the games and headed to the windy city. The Pirates took games 3 and 5 thanks to the pitching of Sloppy Thurston and Lee Grissom and could have won game #4 if it wasn't for a walk-off home run by Bob Johnson in the bottom of the 9th to salvage the game for St.Louis. Back at Forbes Field, the Browns started off fast against Sloppy Thurston as they scored a pair of runs in the 2nd then held on to win the game, 4-2, and tie the series. Pittsburgh's Tommy Bridges was just too much on the mound and completely shut down the Browns as the Pirates won the game, 2-0, to win their second straight world's championship. Code:

1936 - MLB Year In Review
It was a memorable year, made up of tight pennant races in both leagues plus the Hall of Fame opening it's doors to a record size of four inductees as it enshrines Eppa Rixey, Frankie Frisch, Joe Sewell and Pie Traynor.
In the American League, after being in the second division for almost a full decade, the Boston Red Sox found themselves in first place as Labor Day rolled around. The Detroit Tigers were closing in fast and heading into the final week, Detroit was only 3 games back. The Tigers closed to within 2 games as it headed to Beantown for a shot at tying for the top of the AL but the Red Sox won the final game to win it's first AL title since 1916. Boston won the title thanks to the batting of Joe Dimaggio, who batted .329, and the pitching of Tony Freitas, who finished third in the AL in wins (18) and second in ERA (3.10). AL Rookie of the Year Ed Lagger was the leader of the bullpen as he compiled a 9-6 record and 12 saves, the saves good enough to tie for the league lead with fellow Bosoxer Al Yeargin. Detroit was led by the great pitching of AL Outstanding Pitcher award winner Lefty Grove, who led the junior circuit in both ERA (3.08) and wins (23) along with finishing in third with 178 strikeouts. The Philadelphia Athletics finished in third place, 9 games behind Boston, thanks to the pitching of Johnny Marcum, who was second in the league in wins with 22, and Lefty Gomez, who led the league with 193 punch outs. In the National League, an even tighter title race was held as the St.Louis Cardinals held a 3 game lead over the defending champion Pirates and 6 games over the Dodgers. Pittsburgh mounted a streak that led them to taking over first place by a 1/2 game with a week and a half to go but St.Louis came back with a streak of their own and clinched it's first pennant in 18 years with 3 games remaining on the schedule. St.Louis slugger Wally Berger led the way but the shining star was second year pitcher Bob Feller, who led the major leagues in ERA (2.72) and was third in the NL with 205 strikeouts. A key pickup, Van Lingle Mungo, was picked up in a trade for outfielder Earl Averill and he was the NL Outstanding Pitcher award winner as he compiled a 16-9 record with an ERA of 2.88. Pittsburgh ended up in a second place tie with the Boston Bees, four games back, thanks to a strong 1-2 punch in the lineup of Bill Terry and Jimmie Foxx. Terry led the majors in average, batting .372, and Foxx was third in both home runs (26) and stolen bases (19). The surprising strong pitching of Bill Walker, who tied for the NL lead in wins (19), led the Bees mound corps as Boston came back to tie the Pirates for second place. During the World Series, the Cardinals' Bob Feller continued his strong sophomore season as he led St.Louis to a four-game sweep of the Red Sox by winning games 1 and 4. Code:

1937 - MLB Year In Review
The Detroit Tigers had hoped to improve on their second place finish of 1936, but another club had other ideas. Due to the emergence of American League's MVP, Hank Greenberg, the Philadelphia Athletics wanted to return to the top after finishing no lower than third place the last two seasons. Greenberg led the league in both home runs (43) and runs batted in (141) plus finished third in the AL in average, batting .346. To help out Greenberg, Arky Vaughan led the junior circuit in average by batting .353. Frank Pytlak helped out with his legs as he stole 34 bases and scored 104 runs, both top three finishes in the league. The Mackmen also had a strong pitching staff that was led by Roy Sherid and Lefty Gomez. Philadelphia raced to the top of the AL in June and led the second place Tigers by 6 games heading into Labor Day. The Athletics held Detroit at bay and clinched the title with 5 games remaining. Thanks to the pitching of Lefty Grove, the Detroit Tigers finished in second place for the second straight year as he finished in a tie for the league lead with 19 wins and strikeouts (160) along with a second place finish in ERA, with 2.83. Cleveland finished in third place, a distant 19 games behind Philadelphia, thanks to the hitting of Paul Waner (.348 avg) and the pitching of Peaches Davis, who led the AL in ERA with 2.74.
In the National League, the Boston Bees continued their climb towards the top after finishing 1936 in a tie for second. Boston led Philadelphia by 6 games and Brooklyn by 11 1/2 games heading into Labor Day before the Dodgers caught fire and had a 9-game winning streak which enabled them to past the fading Phillies and pull to within 1 1/2 games of the Bees with only a few games remaining. The Bees hung on and clinched the NL title on the last day of the season as both teams lost and enabled Boston to win by a 1-game margin. Tommy Henrich drove in 124 runs and belted 26 home runs to lead the Boston attack and Paul Derringer led the way with a league-leading 21 wins. The Dodgers' mound corps led Brooklyn late season run and the Dodgers finished second as Dizzy Dean won 20 games and Waite Hoyt won 19. The World Series was turned into a 4-game rout as the Athletics outscored the Bees, 40-17 with Chick Hafey clouting 3 home runs and AL Rookie of the Year Enos Slaughter batting over .470 leading the offensive outburst. "captaincarl" is named after my favorite Red Sox player, Carl Yastrzemski. I am also doing the same thing with my wrestling journal at OS and over at greydogsoftware.com. Over there, my screen name is "captainlou", after Lou Albano. Like I said, copy/paste is a wonderful thing! I think that big six, papi and kenyan_cheena have great journals here and I highly recommend reading them as well. The others are really good as well but I make sure that I put those three journals at the top of my reading list. Last edited by captaincarl; 10-12-2008 at 06:04 AM. |

1938 - MLB Year In Review
This season, like those before it, consisted of winning spurts and losing streaks, as well as injuries, bad breaks, lots of cheers and boos, new faces making good on their promise, and tried faces that played well enough to hang on for another year. All in all, the 1938 season got down to several games.
The highlights of the year included such grandeur as Johnny Allen throwing a no-hitter, and pitcher Lefty Grove earning immortality by becoming the 21st pitcher to reach 250 victories. The year also saw Brooklyn joining the night baseball scene and a blockbuster trade that sent two of the game's prolific sluggers changing places. A low point once again was the absence on the field of a legendary slugger and star, Babe Ruth, who once again did not appear in a game for the second straight year following a major squabble with the Cubs' management. In the American League, it looked like the Athletics would have their hands full in trying to successfully defend the league title. Heading into Labor Day, Philadelphia held an 8 1/2 game lead over Washington, 9 games over both Boston and St.Louis, and 10 games over Detroit. As the season winded down, the Senators, Red Sox and Tigers each started dropping out of the picture as the Browns caught fire and got to within 3 games of the Athletics with 5 to play and a crutial 2-game showdown. Philadelphia stayed firm and clinched the AL pennant as they swept the two games against St.Louis. Leading the way down the stretch for the Athletics was all-star catcher Jimmie Foxx, who the team had acquired at the trade deadline in a trade that sent slugger Hank Greenberg to Pittsburgh, and ace starter Lefty Gomez. Foxx batted .313-10-31 in his two months as an Athletic and Gomez went on to win a co-league leading 20 games as he and Bill McGee combined to win 39 games. The Browns finished in second place, 5 games behind, thanks to the pitching of "Deacon" Danny MacFayden, who tied for the league lead with 20 victories. Washington finished a distant third, 14 games behind, and was lead by the bat of AL MVP Johnny Mize, who won 2/3 of the triple crown with an AL leading .355 average and 29 home runs. In the National League, there wasn't much of a doubt as the Pittsburgh Pirates roared to the top of the standings and led the Phillies by 13 1/2 games heading into Labor Day, before coasting to the NL pennant. Leading the charge was newly acquired Hank Greenberg. The Phillies finished in second place, 13 games behind, thanks to the hitting of Joe "Ducky" Medwick and pitcher Monty Stratton, who was awarded the NL's outstanding pitcher award for his major league leading 22 wins and the major's second best ERA with 2.73. Cincinnati ended up with a third place finish thanks to the hitting of the NL's MVP, Rudy York, who batted .337-37-95. During the World Series, the Philadelphia Athletics took a comanding 3-1 game lead after crushing the Pirates, 12-4, in game #4. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell the pitchers to show up the rest of the series as Pittsburgh won the next three games by the scores of 13-6, 7-0 and 13-2 to capture their third world's championship in the last five seasons.
