1939 - MLB Year In Review
Although the final standings of a 12-game margin over Boston and St.Louis gives an impression of a trouble-free season, there were a few problems for a time for the Athletics from both clubs. In early June it looked as if the Red Sox would overtake the Athletics but that was before Joe Dimaggio went down with a season ending pinch-nerve in his back injury. Boston then fell flat and out of contention quickly until Ted Williams started to get hot and carry the offense. Around Labor Day, Philadelphia only led by 7 1/2 games over St.Louis and 8 1/2 games over Washington. The Senators fell out of contention and it wasn't until the middle of the last week of the regular season that the Athletics were able to eliminate the Browns to capture their third AL flag in a row and 4th in six years. Jimmie Foxx led the way for the Mackmen by clouting 35 home runs and driving in 124 runs. On the mound, Lefty Gomez won an AL-leading 18 games and was awarded the league's Outstanding Pitcher award for the second straight season. Ted Williams showed no signs of a sophomore jinx as he paced the league with a .364 batting average to help the Red Sox to a 2nd place tie with the Browns. St.Louis finished in the tie for second place thanks to the bat of Max West, who batted .339 and drove in 116 runs.
For a long time it looked like the Philadelphia Phillies would never reach the top of the senior circuit after there were harsh words between them and Babe Ruth when he left via free agency after the 1922 season. Thanks to the bat of Dolph Camilli, who slugged 24 homers and drove in 106 runs, and the arm of Cliff Melton, who finished 2nd in the NL in wins with 21, the Phillies held a slight 2-game lead over the Boston Bees on Labor Day then finally captured their first NL title in 17 years with only a few games to go in the regular season. Boston ended up 4 games behind Philadelphia in second place thanks to the NL's Outstanding Pitcher award winner, Paul Derringer, who led the league with 24 wins and finished 3rd in the NL with a 3.08 ERA. NL MVP Rudy York powered a league leading 26 home runs and drove in 114 runs in leading Cincinnati to a 3rd place finish, 8 games behind the league leading Phillies. During the all Shibe Park World Series, the Athletics took a 2-0 lead in games and after the Phillies won a 13-12 extra inning slugfest in game 3, the Athletics took the next two games to win their second world's championship in three years. Bill Lee was the star of the series as he won two games, including a 3-hit shutout in the series ending 5th game. Code:

1940 - MLB Year In Review
After finishing in second place behind the Philadelphia Athletics the last two years, the St.Louis Browns knew that their time was coming. Led by third-year pro Charlie Keller, St.Louis took hold of the American League lead in August and held a slim 2 1/2 game lead over the defending champs and 10 games over the Boston Red Sox when Labor Day rolled around. With only a week remaining, the Browns finally eliminated the Athletics with only a few games remaining. "King Kong" Keller led the way for the Brownies as he went .294-26-97 with Jeff Heath (.296-19-93) providing some support. St.Louis's Thornton Lee had a league leading 20 wins and was the only pitcher to record 20 or more wins in the majors. The defending champions, Philadelphia, finished in second place, 7 games behind, thanks to the power bat from "The Beast", Jimmy Foxx, who finished 3rd in home runs (29) and RBI (102). The Boston Red Sox continued their success as the Bosox finished in third place, 10 games behind. The AL's MVP, Joe Dimaggio (.372-34-128) led the way as he won the junior circuit's triple crown with rising star Ted Williams (.341-33-115) combining to form a powerful 1-2 punch in the heart of the Boston order. Al Javery and Vito Tamulis each had 19 wins for the Red Sox to lead the mound corps.
In contrast to the American League pennant struggle, the National League winner reversed roles and had a cakewalk. New York and Philadelphia each had turns at the top in the early stages but Brooklyn came on hot as the weather got warmer and took the lead to stay as they held a 15 1/2 game lead on both the Giants and Phillies heading into September. The Dodgers never looked back and easily clinched the NL title, their first since the days of Babe Ruth, with over two weeks to go. The 1-2 punch of "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg and the NL's MVP Joe "Flash" Gordon led the powerful Dodger lineup. Johnny Allen won the NL's Outstanding Pitcher award as he led the league in wins (19) and ERA (2.43). Dizzy Dean (2.87 ERA, 3rd in NL) also provided the pitching help. Led by Larry French's 19 wins, the New York Giants finished in second place, 15 games behind Brooklyn. A historic comeback happened during the World Series as Brooklyn came from a 3 games to none deficit and won the next four games to win their first ever world's championship. Hank Greenberg's bat (3 HR) and the clutch pitching of Howie Pollet (2 wins) negated the 4-home run performance of Charlie Keller to win it for the Dodgers. Code:

"Joltin' Joe" is in centerfield and "The Kid" is in rightfield for the Bosox. The Red Sox have now also signed free agent secondbaseman Luke Appling to go along with them. If the three of them can stay healthy long enough, who knows what they can produce in the same lineup.

Hall Opens Door Wider, Four Inducted
The Hall Of Fame today announced that they were lowering the second level hitting criteria for induction. The HOF will now induct players who accumulated a total of 2,350 or more hits provided that their batting average was .290 or higher. As a result, the following four players have been included in the HOF class of 1940: Code:

1941 - MLB Year In Review
Expectations were high for the Boston Red Sox after their free agent signing of Luke Appling to go along with their 1-2 punch of Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. Boston shot out in front in the early stages of the season with the Browns, White Sox, and Athletics right on their tail. Unfortunately for the Bosox, injuries to Appling and DiMaggio sent the team into a tailspin and when September rolled around, the St.Louis Browns held a 4 1/2 game lead over Boston while the Chicago White Sox were 8 games back. With only a week remaining in the regular season, the Red Sox trailed the Browns by only 2 games before St.Louis pulled away to repeat as the AL champions. The Browns hitting attack was led by Jeff Heath (.333-18-110) and Pete Reiser (.313-14-75). Boston finished in second place, three games back, behind the hitting of Ted Williams (.369-26-96), the junior circuit's MVP, and the pitching of the AL's Outstanding Pitcher award winner, Max Lanier (20-3, 2.28 era).
The pennant race in the National League was even tighter as Brooklyn held a 1 game lead over the Giants, a 1 1/2 game lead over Cincinnati and 4 games over Pittsburgh. The Dodgers then went into a free-fall with the Reds taking over first place by a game over the Giants and 4.5 games ahead of the Dodgers. New York and Cincinnati traded the lead a couple of times and were tied with only two games remaining for each club. The Giants won their last two games and Cincinnati split theirs as New York captured their first NL title in twelve years. The Giants were led by Johnny Moore (.319-14-104) at the plate with both Larry French (18-12, 2.73 era) and Johnny Beazley (19-12, 3.30 era) leading the mound corps. Cincinnati finished in second place, one game behind the G-men, thanks to the arm of Claude Passeau (league leading 24 wins and 2.31 era), who was awarded the NL's Outstanding Pitcher award. Brooklyn ended up in third place, 6 games behind, thanks to the power production of Hank Greenberg (25 HR's). The World Series opened with the Browns and Giants splitting the two games in St.Louis before heading to the Polo Grounds for games 3,4 and 5. The Giants, thanks to the hitting of Moore and Cavarretta, swept the three games in New York and captured their first world's championship in 28 years. Code:
