1942 - MLB Year In Review
The St.Louis Browns served early notice on the American League that they planned to retain their crown, and proved it by taking a quick lead that no team could cut down all year. Finishing with a five-game bulge over the runner-up Yankees, the Browns packed plenty of wallop as Charlie Keller and Jeff Heath both knocked in over 100 runs. Pitcher Si Johnson was the AL's only 20-game winner as he led the St.Louis mound crew and was awarded the league's Outstanding Pitcher award.
The second-place Yankees had to thank slugger Hal Trosky (24 HRs) in leading the team to their highest finish in franchise history to date. The third-place Red Sox grabbed a major individual award as Ted Williams followed his MVP in 1941 by winning the Triple Crown with a .374 average, an AL record 45 homers, and 121 RBI's for his second straight AL MVP award. The Pittsburgh Pirates, world champions in 1938, caught fire early in the season and were in a neck-and-neck battle with the Cincinnati Reds all season long. Pittsburgh had only a slight 1/2 game lead over the Reds around Labor Day then fell 2 games back of Cincinnati with 10 games to play. The Pirates battled back to draw even with 3 games to go and ended up clinching the NL title on the next-to-last day of the season. Pittsburgh was led by the power bat of Johnny Mize (27 HRs, 107 RBIs), and by the pitching of Marv Breuer (18 wins). The Cincinnati Reds had the senior circuit's top pitcher leading the way as Dave Koslo won 21 games and struck out 165 batters in winning the NL's Outstanding Pitcher award. The third-place New York Giants, behind the arms of Larry French (2.44 ERA) and Johnny Beazley (18 wins) came from 16 games behind on July 1st to finish only 6 games behind the title winning Pirates. The World Series was a tightly fought one as Pittsburgh jumped out with wins in the first two games only to see the Browns take games 3 and 4 to even things up. After the Pirates took the last game at Forbes, the Browns came back behind the bat of Charlie Keller as he homered in game six in leading them to a 4-3 win in extra innings to force a game seven. Pittsburgh jumped out to a 4-0 lead but in the bottom of the 8th, Charlie Keller belted a 2-run HR, his 3rd of the series, to give the Browns a 5-4 lead and ace Si Johnson shut down the Bucs to give the Browns the world's championship, their fifth overall and first one in twenty years. 1943 - MLB Year In Review
The farm system which made the Pirates into champions also served in this year to make them preseason favorites to cop the National League pennant, and the Bucs danced through the senior circuit to the anticipated repeat championship with a week to go. Harry Brecheen appeared out of the farm system to shore up the pitching. Johnny Mize grabbed his first NL home run title since coming to the club as a free agent, Sam Chapman swung a big stick, and Harry Brecheen and Marv Breuer starred on the pitching hill. Second-place New York finished 3 games back while Philadelphia slipped into third-place 9 games behing the Pirates. Pittsburgh's Johnny Mize finished first in HR and third in RBI while batting .320 but lost out in MVP honors to Chicago's Bill Nicholson.
The American League had a new pennant winner as the Philadelphia Athletics survived a down to the wire dogfight with the defending Browns as the White Elephants captured the title on the last day of the season. Although the Athletics lost the services of Jimmie Foxx for most of the season, Enos Slaughter and Arky Vaughan provided the boost that Philadelphia needed to hold back the surging St.Louis club. The Athletics also had the cream of the AL pitching crop as Chubby Dean (20 wins) and Dizzy Trout (2.88 era, league high 7 shutouts) carried the pitching chores. The 1942 Triple Crown winner, Ted Williams, led the Boston Red Sox to a third-place finish as he almost grabbed another Triple Crown as he finished first in average and home runs but lost out to Detroit's Vern Stephens by 3 for the RBI crown. In the World Series, Pittsburgh ran off to a 3-games-to-0 lead by sweeping the first two games at home and then taking the first game in Shibe Park by the scores of 6-3, 7-2 and 4-0. The Athletics managed to avoid being swept as Chubby Dean bested Marv Breuer by a 4-3 score. Unfortunately for the Mackmen, the Pirates came roaring back behind home runs by Sam Chapman and Max West to take the world's championship by a 7-3 score. Code:

1944 - MLB Year In Review
The American League pennant race began with the Washington Senators taking a 3.5 game lead over the Browns and 4 games over the Athletics, the defending AL champs. By the end of May, Philadelphia had overtaken Washington and took a 1/2 game lead over them and 2 games over the Browns. From then on, it was all Athletics as they held an 8 game lead over the Senators and clinched their second straight title with two weeks remaining. Leading the way was their ace pitcher, Dizzy Trout. Trout was named the AL's outstanding pitcher as he compiled a 20-11 record with a 2.76 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 294 innings. Stan Spence drove in 114 runs to pace the offensive attack. The Senators settled for second place, finishing 8 games back, behind the pitching of 19-game winner Arnold Carter. Carter also finished 2nd in ERA (2.86). The St.Louis Browns ended up in 3rd place, 13 games behind Philadelphia, as "King Kong" Keller led the majors with 41 homers and 111 RBIs, 3rd in the junior circuit behind teammate Pete Reiser, who drove in 119 runs.
In the National League, the Cubs took an early 1.5 game lead over the Braves and the Reds but by the end of May, the Cubbies trailed the first place Braves by 5 games while the Reds sat 2 games back. Cincinnati stayed hot and took the NL lead at the end of June by 1 game over Boston and 2 games over the Giants. The Reds dashed to a 6.5 game lead over the Braves and 7 over New York on Labor Day and clinched the NL title, their first in 21 years and second overall, with two weeks to go. Taffy Wright led the Cincinnati attack with a NL-leading .343 average while teammate Dixie Walker was 2nd with a .332 average. Walker also finished 2nd in the NL with 119 RBIs but was snubbed by the MVP voting as the Braves' rookie catcher, Bill Salkeld, took the award, plus the NL's Rookie of the Year Award, following a 32 HR, 109 RBI debut season. The Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants tied for 2nd place, a distant 14 games behind. Brooklyn was led by Hank Greenberg (24 HR) and Ival Goodman (.328 avg). The World Series started out with the Athletics taking the first two games at Shibe Park then Cincinnati tied the series by winning the first two games at Crosley Field. Philadelphia took game 5, 5-3, and a 3-2 game lead back to Shibe Park but Cincinnati, thanks to the pitching of Allie Reynolds and Jack Kramer, took the next two games by 5-3 and 4-3 scores to win the world's championship. Game seven was a barn burner as the Athletics took an early 3-0 lead after the first two innings before the Reds drew even with one run in the 4th and 2 in the 6th to tie the game, 3-all. Dixie Walker belted a solo HR with two outs to give the Dodgers the lead then Kramer set the Mackmen down to pick up the win in the deciding game. Code:

What a series, maybe the best ever?? Also,Teddy Ballgame and Bob Feller in the free agent market, two players who can turn the fortunes of a team instantly,it's going to be very interesting to see who goes after them.My guess is either Chicago(AL) the Giants, they seem to be the teams who go after the major free agents.

I wouldn't be surprised if either Brooklyn, Pittsburgh and the Yankees enter the mix as well. Brooklyn was the team that signed Babe Ruth as a free agent back when he was first in the free agent market.
Pittsburgh went from World's champions to the worst record in the majors the first year following the retirement of Jimmie Foxx. The Yankees could sign Ted Williams, who may not be ready to start the 1945 season due to the injury that cut short his 1944 season. He is a lefty pull hitter that could probably take advantage of the short porch in right field. |

1945 - MLB Year In Review
Due to the death of the previous commissioner, Kennesaw Mountain Landis, the club owners have named Albert B. (Happy) Chandler, a U.S. Senator from Kentucky, to replace the iron-handed Landis. Chandler's first season had some great excitement.
The AL pennant race had several lead changes between the Athletics, Red Sox, Browns and White Sox and heading into Labor Day, Chicago held a 6.5 game lead over the charging Athletics, 7 over the Browns and 8 over the Red Sox. On the final day of the season, however, the Pale Hose found themselves in front by 1 game over Boston. Thanks in part to the AL's MVP, Stan Musial, the White Sox won on the final day to clinch the title. The rising star led the junior circuit with a .360 average plus added 13 HRs and 71 RBIs. 19-game winner Harry Brecheen led the way on the mound. Boston finished only a single game behind thanks to the hitting of Phil Weintraub (.329 avg) and Hank Edwards (119 RBIs) and on the hill by Max Lanier (AL leading 2.15 ERA & 206 strikeouts) and 22-game winner Tex Hughson. Philadelphia ended in 3rd place, 3 games behind the White Sox, thanks to the pitching of the league's Outstanding Pitcher award winner, Dizzy Trout. Trout was 2nd in ERA (2.67) and strikeouts (173) along with the major league leading 26 wins. The NL's title chase was not really as exciting as in the AL as the New York Giants, behind the pitching of Don Newhouser and Tommy Hughes, held a 7 game lead over the second place Brooklyn Dodgers on Labor Day and clinched the title with a week to go. Brooklyn, led by their new 1-2 power punch of Hank Greenberg and the NL's MVP, Ted Williams, finished 3 games behind. Williams became the second player in history, HOFer Ty Cobb was the other, to win the MVP/Outstanding Hitter award in both leagues in back-to-back seasons. Ted finished 2nd in the NL in average (.368) and led the majors in home runs (39). The Pittsburgh Pirates came back from going from best to worst and finished in third place, 10 games behind the front running Giants. Slugger Johnny Mize continued to lead the way for the Bucs. Even the World Series had some excitement in it. After taking a quick 2 games to 0 lead at the Polo Grounds, the New York Giants dropped games 3 and 4 to allow the White Sox to battle back and tie the series. New York won game 5 behind the pitching of Hal Newhouser and headed back to the Polo Grounds needing only to win one game. Thanks to the pitching of de la Cruz, the Pale Hose evened the series by winning game 6 by a score of 6-1. Chicago took a quick 5-run lead after the first four innings then held on as the Giants scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th and 8th innings to pull within one. Unfortunately for the G-men, the come back fell short and the Chicago White Sox won their first world's championship. Code:
