A couple of things, first, are there any other teams who as of yet have never won or made a World Series?Another thing is,the drastic difference between the careers of Ted Williams and Joe Dimaggio. For Joe D,it looks as if injuries are going to curtail an otherwise promising career, the hall of fame seems a loooooong shot at best.As for Williams,he could end up as the best player ever when all is said and done, his numbers are ridiculous.

With the Chicago White Sox getting into, and winning, the World Series in 1945, only the New York Yankees have never been to the fall classic. All of the other 15 teams have been to the World Series and have won at least once. |

1946 - MLB Year In Review
The NL provided some excitement as the Brooklyn Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates and St.Louis Cardinals were all in a dogfight for the 1946 pennant. Around the Fourth of July, Brooklyn had a slim 1.5 game lead over Pittsburgh and 4 games over St.Louis, who were closing in. By Labor Day, the Dodgers and Pirates were deadlocked and the Cardinals were 4.5 games back. Brooklyn took charge with a week and a half remaining and clinched the NL title a week later. Brooklyn was once again led by the 1-2 power punch of Ted Williams (NL MVP, .308-43-115) and Hank Greenberg (.295-40-134). Pittsburgh finished in second place, 4 games behind, thanks to the hitting of Johnny Mize, who belted a major league leading 50 HRs and was 3rd in the NL in average, batting .312. The Cardinals ended in 3rd place, 6 games behind, thanks to the pitching of Bob Feller. Feller finished 3rd in era (2.86), 2nd in wins (20) and led the majors in strikeouts (257) but was denied the league's Outstanding Pitcher award, which was given to Cincinnati's Claude Passeau, who led the majors with 21 victories and was 2nd in majors in ERA (2.59).
In the AL, the Detroit Tigers, who hadn't won the pennant since 1930, ran away with the title after taking the lead in the beginning of June and never looked back, eventually winning by 5 games over the Philadelphia Athletics and the St.Louis Browns. Vern Stephens led the Tigers with 103 RBIs and Hank Wyse (18 wins) led the mound staff. Philadelphia and St.Louis both finished 5 games behind and tied for 2nd place. The Athletics were led by the hitting of Willard Marshall (.287-26-101) and the pitching of Atlee Donald (16 wins, 2.99 ERA). The Browns were led by Mickey Vernon (.292-9-73) and Charlie Keller (.250-37-118). During the World Series, the Brooklyn Dodgers dominated the Detroit Tigers and defeated them easily, 4 games to 1, behind the hitting of Hank Greenberg and NL Rookie of the Year, Spider Jorgensen. A special thing of note also happened this year. The New York Yankees, yearly contenders for the AL's cellar, broke the gentlemen's agreement and brought up Jackie Robinson, a player of color. Jackie Robinson firmly convinced one and all that talent was too great an asset to hide behind the excuse of dark skin color, as he batted .359 in 217 at bats late in 1946. Code:

1947 - MLB Year In Review
The Brooklyn Dodgers entered spring training in 1947 wanting to do what no team has done since the Pittsburgh Pirates did it back in 1934-35. That was to win back-to-back world's championships. Brooklyn started out in a tie for 1st at the end of April but fell 4 1/2 games behind the New York Giants by the end of May. It was all Dodgers from that point on as Brooklyn caught the New York at the end of June then never looked back as they streaked to the NL title, winning by 11 games over the Giants. Slugger Hank Greenberg slugged 52 HRs and had 140 RBIs, both major league leaders, but it was teammate Ted Williams (.355-34-100) who took the league's MVP honors, his third in the NL after winning 4 times in the AL. The New York Giants, led by 18-game winner de la Cruz, finished in 2nd place, a distant 11 games behind. The Chicago Cubs finished in 3rd place, 14 games behind the front running Dodgers, and were led by the bat of Dale Mitchell, who led the majors with a .383 average.
In the American League, the St.Louis Browns won their first title since 1942 by going wire-to-wire but it wasn't as easy of a win as the Dodgers was. St.Louis faught all summer long with the Athletics, Tigers, Indians and White Sox. As Labor Day approached, the Browns and White Sox were tied with the Athletics 2 games back and both the Tigers and Indians 2 1/2 games behind. With a week and a half left, St.Louis was able to take control and had built a 7 game lead and coasted from there. The Browns were led by the bats of Mickey Vernon (.314 BA, 2nd in AL) and Charlie Keller (31 HRs, 109 RBIs). The Mackmen finished 6 games behind and in 2nd place led by the arm of 19-game winner Nels Potter. The White Sox ended up in 3rd place, 7 games back, thanks to the bat of Stan Musial (.376 BA) and on the mound by Warren Spahn, who won 20 games. In the World Series, Brooklyn took command early by taking the first two games and won their second straight world's championship, 4 games to 1. The Dodgers were able to do this without the bat of "Hammerin' Hank" Greenberg, who's season ended with 2 weeks to go due to an injury. Ted Williams was the powerhouse for the Brooklyn attack as he batted .611, clouting 4 HRs and had 11 RBIs. Code:

1948 - MLB Year In Review
The Chicago White Sox and St.Louis Browns struggled through their 154-game schedule only to find themselves having to play another game before the American League had a team to present to the World Series. What happened for the first time in junior circuit history was a flat-footed tie for first place. Contributing to the excitement was the fact that the Red Sox, led by Barney McCosky and midseason addition Hank Greenberg, stayed in the race until they were eliminated by the White Sox with a week and 1/2 to go.
The winner-take-all playoff game climax was short-lived as St.Louis went on to rout the White Sox, 8-3. Despite producing the league batting champion in Stan Musial (.349), the White Sox never really stood the chance in front of the St.Louis home crowd. St.Louis was led by the power hitting of Jeff Heath, who led the AL in home runs (43) and RBIs (147). The runner-up Chicago was once again led by superstar Stan Musial. Stan Musial once again dominated the triple crown catagories as he also finished second in the league in home runs (34) and runs batted in (119) to go along with leading the AL in average and was named the AL's MVP for the fourth straight season. The Brooklyn Dodgers continued to roll along and dominate the senior circuit as they went wire-to-wire and won their third straight NL title. Brooklyn had no trouble at all and clinched the NL pennant with two weeks to spare. The Dodgers were led once again by the league's MVP, Ted Williams. Ted Williams led the NL in batting (.368), was third in home runs (37) and drove in 92 runs. In second place, and a distant 12 games behind, were the Boston Braves. The Braves were led by the pitching of Don Newcombe, who led the NL in wins (20) and strikeouts (171). The Pittsburgh Pirates finished in third place, 18 games back, thanks to the hitting of Johnny Mize (.324-44-117). During the World Series, the teams split the first two games before heading to Saint Louis. Brooklyn took 2 out of 3 to take the lead, 3 games to 2, back to Ebbets Field. Brooklyn start Hal Neuhouser was pounded in game 6 as the Browns evened the series with an 8-2 win then the Dodgers' pitching staff was lit up for 14 runs as St.Louis won, 14-6, to win the world's championship. Quote:
I'll include them right after I'm through with my 2 managed franchises ('78 Bosox posted here & OS + '67 Bosox posted at OS) for 1 week each and before I start the 1949 season. (I'd post the '67 here as well but papi already did one here and I'm not sure that the rest here would like another version) Last edited by captaincarl; 02-21-2009 at 12:57 PM. |
