1949 - MLB Year In Review
In the AL Detroit and New York jumped to the front of the pack but their lead was shortlived as the defending world champion St.Louis started picking up steam as the calendar turned to May. The Browns continued out in front but Washington was hot on their heels throughout the summer and it became a two team race as Labor Day rolled around. St.Louis started pulling away and ended up clinching the AL pennant with a week and 1/2 left in the schedule. The Browns were led by the power hitting combo of Andy Seminick (.236-29-93) and Don Lenhardt (.273-29-100) and the pitching of Bill Sayles, who led the junior circuit in wins (20) and ERA (2.25) and was awarded the league's Outstanding Pitcher Award. Washington ended the season in second place, five games behind, thanks to the hitting of the AL Rookie of the Year, Al Rosen (.280-33-103), who also picked up the league's Most Valuable Player Award as he led the AL in home runs and runs batted in. The White Sox, led by perennial All-Star Stan Musial (.341-20-69).
In the NL defending champion Brooklyn took the early lead but was in a dog fight all season long with the Boston Braves. Boston caught the Dodgers and had the lead by 1.5 games but Brooklyn, led by now five-time NL MVP Ted Williams (.336-41-124), regained the lead with a week and 1/2 to go then held on to clinch the title on the next to last day of the season. Howie Pollet led the NL in wins (21) and ERA (3.39) and took home the league's Outstanding Pitcher Award. Boston finished the season only 1 game back as Duke Snider finished second in the senior circuit in average (.328) and led the league in stolen bases (25). The Cincinnati Reds came up from as far back as 8 games out and ended up 4 games back and in third place. The Reds were led by Larry Doby (.323-17-95) as he continues his success after winning the league's ROY award two seasons ago. In game one of the World Series, the Dodgers totally dominated the game to win 13-4 then the Browns won game two as they headed to Ebbets Field for games 3,4 and 5. Bill Sayles continued to pitch well for St.Louis as they won game 3 but Brooklyn, behind the pitching of Howie Pollet (2-0), belted Charlie Dean for a second time as they evened the series with a 10-2 win. Pitcher Max Lanier had one bad inning as he hurled St.Louis to a 6-4 win in game 5 then the Browns wrapped things up as Bill Sayles pitched into the 8th inning as St.Louis took a 5-0 lead after 2 innings and held on to win game 6, 5-4, to win their second straight world's championship and their 9th overall. Since you're going to be following the 3 big Hall Of Famers from "The Era" what about the fourth much less talked about Hall Of Famer from the same era,Richie Ashburn.I know he's not a big power guy like those others, but he was the quintisential leadoff man and an awesome defensive player.

1950 - MLB Year In Review
During the spring of 1950, the world champion St.Louis Browns were looking to make it a three-peat, something that only one team had ever done, the 1906-09 Philadelphia Athletics. Something happened on the way there. The Browns collapsed at the opening bell and finished April 8.5 games behind the front running Chicago White Sox. St.Louis never recovered, on the other hand, the Pale Hose ended up dominating the AL so much that they ran off to an 11 game lead by Labor Day and clinched the title with over two weeks remaining. Behind the hitting of Stan Musial (league leading .335 average) and the junior circuit's MVP, Eddie Robinson (.334-29-121) and the pitching of Bob Feller (21 wins), Chicago coasted through the remaining month of the season. The Washington Senators finished in 2nd place, a very distant 17 games behind, got there thanks to the hitting of Al Rosen (.263-26-95) and the pitching of Mike Garcia (19 wins, 3.05 era). The Indians, led by rookie Mickey Mantle (.266-13-62) and Phil Cavarretta (.259-18-76) at the plate and Lou Brissie (19 wins, 3.49 era), ended up in 3rd place, 20 games behind.
The race in the National League was much different. The defending NL champs, the Brooklyn Dodgers, took the early lead after the first month but started faltering and the New York Giants took advantage by grabbing the lead. It became a three team race as Labor Day came around with St.Louis and Cincinnati hot on New York's heels. With less than half a week remaining, the Cardinals continued to push the Giants until the Giants were able to clinch the NL title on the next-to-last day of the season. New York was led by the mighty bats of Roy Campanella (.288-18-84) and Tommy Henrich (.258-21-92) and the arm of Chet Nichols (16 wins, 3.09 era). The St.Louis Cardinals finished a single game behind thanks to the hitting of Joe DiMaggio (.280-23-97) and rookie Gil McDougal (.299-17-90). The Cincinnati Reds ended in 3rd place, 4 games behind the Giants, behind the hitting of Larry Doby (.286-26-97) and the pitching of Mel Parnell (15 wins, 3.79 era, 108 strikeouts). The World Series proved to be anticlimatic as the White Sox continued their dominating season by defeating the Giants, 4 games to 1. Two of those games went by way of extra innings as Chicago won game 3, 4-3, in 12 innings and game 4, 4-3, in 19 innings, the longest game in World Series history. Code:

That's about as dominant a season as I can ever remember seeing in this replay, and you could definitely see it coming, little by little, this team continued to build until the finally put it all together.Another thing I noticed, was the struggles of Richie Ashburn, he's yet to live up to his potential thats for sure.A .337 career OBP for a leadoff man is just not getting it done.On the other hand,Joe Dimaggio has really come on as of late, making up for those 5 bad seasons by getting his lifetime average over the .300 mark and cracking the 2,000 hit barrier.Definite HOF'er in my book.
