1951 - MLB Year In Review
In the American League, the defending world champs, the Chicago White Sox, took the early lead but by Independence Day, the league tightened to where the last place Red Sox were only 6 games behind. Cleveland took the lead briefly for one month before the Philadelphia Athletics took over on Labor Day with the Indians in hot persuit. With only 10 games to go, the Athletics held a 1 game lead over Cleveland and 2 over Detroit. It wasn't until there were only two games left when Detroit was eliminated leaving only the Indians. Philadelphia ended up clinching the AL pennant on the last day of the season. The Athletics were led by the league's MVP, Gil Hodges (.291-44-99) and Dizzy Trout (17-14, 134 strikeouts). The Cleveland Indians finished in second place, 1 game behind, and were led at the plate by Clyde Kluttz (.297-4-60) and Mickey Mantle (.275-20-96) and on the mound by Bob Rush (18-12, 2.49 era), the AL's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner. The Detroit Tigers, thanks to the hitting of Ferris Fain (.305-5-48-5) and the pitching of Steve Gerkin (18 wins, 3.44 ERA), ended in third place, only 2 games behind the winning Athletics.
In the senior circuit, the St.Louis Cardinals took the lead and were up by 2.5 games over the Boston Braves and 3 games over the Pittsburgh Pirates as the league entered Labor Day. With a week and a half to go, the Pirates had overtaken the Cardinals and ended up clinching the NL pennant on the next-to-last day of the season. Pittsburgh was led by the bats of Sid Gordon (.325-25-80), Ralph Kiner (.269-39-114) and Minnie Minoso (.297-12-70, 49 sb) and on the mound by rookie Max Surkont (12 wins, 2.28 ERA) and Fred Hutchinson (NL leading 21 wins). The St.Louis Cardinals ended up finishing in second place, 2 games behind, and were led by the bats of Ted Kluszewski (.289-22-87), Gil McDougald (.293-28-83), Joe DiMaggio (.268-25-70) and the league's batting champion, Johnny Pesky (.340). The Boston Braves finished in third place, 10 games behind the Pirates, thanks to the pitching of rookie Harvey Haddix (19 wins, 3.10 ERA), who won both the NL's Rookie of the Year Award and the league's Outstanding Pitcher Award. The Pirates were awarded home field advantage based on their record and they won both games in Forbes Field before heading to Shibe Park. The Athletics came back to even the series at two games apiece before Pittsburgh won game #5, 7-5, to take a 3 games to 2 advantage. With the score tied, 1-1, in the 8th inning, the Pirates exploded for 3 runs and held on to take game #6, 4-1, and the world's championship. Code:

I'm interested in seeing who heads to the Metropolitans and the Colt .45s when the first expansion hits before the 1961 season, should I ever get there. |

1952 - MLB Year In Review
In the American League, the Detroit Tigers took the early lead and led by as many as 5 1/2 games over the New York Yankees and the St.Louis Browns as summertime rolled around. As Independence Day arrived and the weather started getting hot, so did the Browns and by the trade deadline, Detroit's lead was down to 2 1/2 games with the Yankees 4 1/2 back. St.Louis overtook the Tigers and held a 1 1/2 game lead over New York and 2 games over the now third place Tigers on Labor Day. The Browns continued their surge as both New York and Detroit faultered and St.Louis clinched the AL pennant with 3 games to go. The Browns were led by slugger Vic Wertz (.276-23-91) and AL Rookie of the Year, second baseman Jim Gilliam (.273-11-78, 36 sb). The New York Yankees finished a franchise high second place, 5 games behind St.Louis. The Pinstrippers were led at the plate by the AL's MVP, Jackie Robinson (.318-17-80, 23 sb) and on the mound by Bobby Shantz (17 wins, 2.37 ERA) The Detroit Tigers limped home in third place, 8 games behind the Browns. The Bengals were led at the plate by Smoky Burgess (.314 avg, 3rd in AL) and Willie Mays (.269-21-94) and on the mound by Max Surkont, the AL's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner (21 wins, 169 strikeouts).
In the National League, 154 games weren't enough. The Brooklyn Dodgers took the lead at the beginning of July and, on Labor Day, held a 3 game lead over their arch rivals, the New York Giants. New York climbed their way to the top with just 5 games to go before the Dodgers evened things with 2 games left. Both teams won their last two games to still be deadlocked on top of the NL. The Giants went to Ebbets Field and took a 2-0 lead after 3 innings then held on to defeat Brooklyn, 2-1, to take the NL pennant. The Giants were led at the plate by Bobby Thomson (23 HRs, 95 RBIs) and on the mound by Billy Pierce (23-9, 2.10 ERA, 206 strikeouts), who was the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner. Brooklyn was led once again by Ted Williams (.287-34-91), the NL's MVP winner at the plate and Allie Reynolds (19 wins, 197 Ks), who threw a no-hitter on July 23rd. The Philadelphia Phillies finished in third place, 5 1/2 games behind the winning Giants, and were led at the plate by Yogi Berra (.256-22-94) and on the mound by Robin Roberts (2.80 ERA, 14 wins) and Bob Lemon (18 wins, 2.81 ERA). The World Series was anticlimatic as the Giants rode their momentum and swept the first two games at Sportsman's Park before returning to the Polo Grounds and taking games 3 and 5 to win the series 4 games to 1. Giants' catcher Roy Campanella and outfielder Bobby Thomson each hit 2 HRs during the series. Code:

Another think that caught my eye was the sudden high finish of the New York Yankees. They are the only team remaining that hasn't been to the World Series. It's been a 52-year drought. Hank Aaron has made the opening day roster for the Milwaukee Braves for 1953. I'll add him to the followed players list since he is one of your favorites. On a side note, I've already lost 5 players due to season ending injuries and I haven't started the regular season yet. There seems to be a rash of season ending injuries since I brought this over to OOTP9. I've noticed that in my other ones as well. That's why I stopped my thread over on operationsports with the '67 Red Sox. I lost a pair of Joses (Santiago and Tartabull) plus another long stint for Tony C. Have you noticed that Mr. Mantle is having trouble hitting at the "Mistake by the Lake"? Jackie Robinson is the reigning AL MVP yet he has not been signed by any team as I am about to start the 1953 regular season! One other question is on my mind as I enter 1953. What's going to come first, Ted Williams passing Babe Ruth on the all-time home run list or his retirement? Last edited by captaincarl; 04-11-2009 at 01:20 PM. |

1953 - MLB Year In Review
The Chicago White Sox, after going from best in 1950 to worst in 1951, continued to bounce back up and took the early lead in 1953. Their lead grew to as many as 11 games before the 2nd place Yankees started getting hot. The Pale Hose's lead was cut to 4.5 games by New York and it wasn't until there was only three games left in the season before Chicago could finally put away the pesky Yankees. The White Sox hitting attack was led by AL MVP Stan Musial (.355-25-113) and Wally Moon (.348-20-126), who led the league in RBI and was named the junior circuit's Rookie of the Year. The mound staff was led by a pair of 20-game winners, Eddie Lopat (21 wins) and Warren Spahn (20 wins). The New York Yankees finished 6 games behind the front running White Sox and in second place. New York was led at the plate by Jackie Robinson (.329-15-76) and Willie "Puddin' Head" Jones (.286-20-91) and on the mound by the AL's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, Bobby Shantz (22 wins, 3.23 ERA, 172 k). The Boston Red Sox were a very distant third place, 20 games behind Chicago and were led at the plate by slugger Eddie Mathews (.315-43-124).
In the NL, the Philadelphia Phillies grabbed the early lead before Brooklyn took the lead at the beginning of July. The league was a 3-team race as the Phillies, Dodgers and Reds all fought each other and they were joined by a surging New York Giants team with a week and a half to go to make it a 4-way race. It stayed that way into the last week of the season with New York being eliminated on the next to last day and both Cincinnati and Philadelphia only a single game behind the Dodgers. Both teams were eliminated on the final day of the season as Brooklyn took the NL pennant. The Dodgers were led by the NL's MVP, Ted Williams (.338-47-108) with help from Harvey Kuenn (.312 avg, 3rd in NL). The Cincinnati Reds edged out the Phillies for second place and finished only 1 game behind. Cincinnati was led by the NL's Rookie of the Year, Joe Cunningham, who led the senior circuit in average (.340), and Larry Doby (41 HR, 115 RBI). The Phillies ended up in 3rd place, 2 games behind Brooklyn, thanks to the pitching of Bob Lemon and Robin Roberts, who each won 18 games, and the hitting of Yogi Berra (.311-32-99). During the World Series, Brooklyn swept the first two games in Chicago then the White Sox won the next four straight to win the world's championship, 4 games to 2, thanks to the pitching of Warren Spahn, Eddie Lopat, Ewell Blackwell and Atlee Donald, as they allowed only 6 runs total in those four games. 1954 - MLB Year In Review
There was a notable absence as the season began. That vacancy was in St.Louis. The owners of the American League club there moved the club to Baltimore - a town that hadn't been in the majors since 1902, when the franchise had been moved to New York.
Beyond the franchise shifts, which are now beginning to unsettle baseball's complacency, there is a more immediate problem to handle. Can anyone topple the Chicago White Sox, the team that had won three World Series in the last nine seasons, from becoming a juggernaut? The answer as 1954 unfolded was no. The Pale Hose, behind the #1 scoring lineup in the AL, spotted the rest of the league the first few months then took the lead in July and blew away the competition. Chicago won by 12 games thanks to a lineup lead by the AL's MVP, Stan Musial (.348-43-143) and Bobby Avila (.337-7-84) and a mound staff lead by Eddie Lopat (21 wins). The newly planted Baltimore Orioles finished in second place thanks to the pitching of the junior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, Bill Sayles (21-9, 2.14 era). The Cleveland Indians ended the season in third place, a whopping 20 games behind Chicago, behind the hitting of Mickey Mantle (.285-21-70) and Hank Thompson (.271-21-86). The National League pennant race was somewhat closer than the AL's. The Pittsburgh Pirates took the lead early on with the Cincinnati Redlegs right on their tails. Cincinnati overtook the Bucs at the beginning of August and clinched the NL title with about a week to go in the season. The Reds, who won their last NL title ten seasons ago, were led by the hitting of the NL's MVP, Joe Cunningham (.339-29-89) and the pitching of both Dizzy Trout (2.65 ERA) and Virgil Trucks (2.90 ERA). The New York Giants, who sat in third place for most of the season, passed Pittsburgh to a second place finish, 6 games behind the Giants, and were led by the hitting of up and coming superstar in the rising, Ernie Banks (33 HR, 102 RBI). Pittsburgh ended up in third place, 1 game behind New York, led by the hitting of slugger Ralph Kiner (.268-28-96) and the pitching of Camilo Pascual (17 wins, NL leading 2.19 ERA). The World Series saw the White Sox and Redlegs split the first two games in Chicago and then the first two of three in Cincinnati to a 2-2 game deadlock. Cincinnati then took game 5 at home and game 6 in Chicago to win the world's championship by a final 4 games to 2 margin thanks to the hitting display of Joe Cunningham, who batted .476 for the series.
