1955 - MLB Year In Review
The American League pennant race quickly became a two-team race as summer rolled around as the Chicago White Sox, the defending AL champs, fought with the Cleveland Indians with neither team no farther back than two games all season long. Chicago held a two-game lead on Labor Day but Cleveland caught up and held a slim one-game lead with a week and a half to go. Towards the junior circuit's last 5 games, the White Sox started falling back and the Indians clinched their first title since 1929 with only two games remaining in the season. Cleveland was led at the plate by Mickey Mantle (.315-37-103) and Ed Bailey (.287-38-103) and on the mound by Frank Lary, who was awarded the AL's Outstanding Pitcher award after winning 17 games and finishing second with a 3.01 ERA. The White Sox ended in 2nd place, 3 games behind, thanks to the hitting of Wally Moon (.301-18-110) and Stan Musial (.293-35-112) with the pitching of Warren Spahn (14 wins, 2.61 ERA). The Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Tigers both finished 14 games behind and tied for 3rd place. Gail Harris (.298-44-126) was the hitting star for the Orioles and Willie Mays (.301-44-125) was the hitting star for the Tigers.
In the NL, they did the junior circuit one better as it was a three-team race between the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs held the lead in the early going before the Pirates tied them by Labor Day with the Braves only 1.5 games back. The Cubs began faultering and with 10 games to go, Milwaukee was now on top with Pittsburgh 2.5 games back and Chicago 5 games out. Chicago continued its collapse and the Braves were able to clinch the NL title with 4 games remaining. Milwaukee was led at the plate by Hank Aaron (.319-25-106), the NL's MVP, and Hank Bauer (.278-20-73) while Don Newcombe (17 wins, 2.72 ERA) led the mound crew. Pittsburgh finished in 2nd place, 5 games back, thanks to the hitting of Joe Adcock (.287-27-84) and Jackie Jensen (.256-19-76) and the pitching of the senior circuit's Outstanding Pitcher award winner, Mike Garcia (17 wins, 2.48 ERA). Thanks to the hitting of Smokey Burgess (.304-20-96) and the pitching of Dick Donovan (16 wins, 3.51 ERA, 132 K), the Brooklyn Dodgers edged the Cubs for 3rd place, 6 games behind. Thanks to the power display by Ed Bailey (4 HRs) and the pitching of both Bob Friend and Larry Jansen, the Cleveland Indians defeated the Milwaukee Braves, 4 games to 1, to win their first world's championship in 26 years. 1956 - MLB Year In Review
The New York Yankees, long time residents of the second division in the AL and the only franchise to never be in the World Series, finished in last place in 1955. At the start of 1956, the Yankees surprised everyone and jumped out to the top of the standings and by the beginning of August, held an 8 game lead over the second place Kansas City Athletics. New York, however, cooled and Kansas City got hot enough to catch the Yankees by the end of the month. The two teams remained nose-to-nose and were tied heading into the final four games. The Yankees then lost their next three of four and Kansas City won the AL pennant on the next to last day of the season. The Athletics were led the hitting of Duke Snider (.319-54-139), who finished 2nd in the league in home runs and led the league in RBIs. The Yankees finished in 2nd place, 1 game behind, thanks to the hitting of Carl Furillo (.332 avg) and the pitching of Johnny Antonelli (20 wins, 2.71 ERA, 222 K), the AL's Cy Young award winner. The Cleveland Indians finished in 3rd place, 11 games behind Kansas City, due to the AL's MVP, Mickey Mantle (.336-56-121).
The race in the National League was just as tightly contested as the junior circuit. The New York Giants took the early lead and led the second place St.Louis Cardinals by 5 1/2 games heading into September. Lightning struck the club in Manhattan as the Giants faultered and the Cardinals got hot. The two teams were tied with just 3 games to go. St.Louis won their last 3 games but New York lost the first game of their final 3 games as the Cardinals clinched the NL title on the last day of the season. St.Louis was led at the plate by Ted Kluszewski (.348 avg) and on the mound by Bill Fischer (2.24 ERA) and Don Cardwell (17 wins, 2.90 ERA). The New York Giants ended up in second place, 1 game behind, thanks to the hitting trio of Yogi Berra (.337 avg), Ernie Banks (52 HR, 145 RBI) and Bill White (48 HR, 137 RBI) and the pitching of Clem Labine (19 wins), the NL Cy Young award winner, and Milt Pappas (18 wins). Pittsburgh finished in 3rd place, 15 games back, thanks to the 2nd best pitching staff in the league, led by 17-game winner Claude Pascual. Kansas City stunned the Cardinals, owners of the best record in baseball, by taking the first two games of the World Series by the scores of 5-3 and 5-4. The clubs headed to Kansas City and, thanks to the power of Gil Hodges and AL Rookie of the Year Roger Maris, the Athletics completed their 4-game sweep of St.Louis to win the franchise's 7th world's championship. 1957 - MLB Year In Review
This was one strange season with several historic events. In the American League, the Red Sox came out of the gate fast and by the beginning of July, held an 11-game lead over the nearest competitor, the now contending New York Yankees. Things started going wrong for the beantowners as they became plagued by injuries to key players and started collapsing as New York climbed to within 1.5 games by the beginning of September. The Yankees overtook Boston and with ten games remaining held a 3.5 game lead over the Red Sox. Boston battled back to within 2 games with 2 games to play but New York held on and won the AL pennant for the first time in franchise history. Joe Adcock was the leader of the attack as he batted .300 with 39 home runs and 106 RBIs. The mound staff was led by 22-game winner Seth Morehead and 17-game winner Johnny Antonelli. Boston finished in second place, 4 games behind, and were led by Harry Anderson (.295 avg) and Eddie Mathews (38 HR, 102 RBI) at the plate and the AL's Cy Young Award winner, Tom Poholski (22 wins, 2.62 era). The Detroit Tigers finished in third place, 6 games behind the Yankees, thanks to the hitting of AL Rookie of the Year, Ron Fairly (.363 avg) and AL MVP Willie Mays (34 HR, 105 RBI, 42 SB) and the pitching of Billy O'Dell (18 wins, 2.93 ERA).
In the National League, it was less exciting as the Milwaukee Braves, led by Hank Aaron (.340-26-110) and NL Cy Young Award winner Don Kaiser (21 wins, .677 winning pct.) with mound help from Harvey Haddix (3.19 ERA, NL leading 224 strikeouts), overtook the St.Louis Cardinals, who had led from opening day, at the beginning of September and never looked back, winning by 10 games. The St.Louis Cardinals finished 10 games back and in second place thanks to the slugging of Mickey Mantle (.334 avg, 41 HR) and Rocky Colavito (39 HR, 110 RBI). The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs tied for third place, 11 games behind. The Phillies were led by the hitting of Dick Groat (.311 avg) and Ed Bouchee (81 RBI, .472 slg%) and the pitching of Early Wynn (15 wins, 2.86 ERA). The Cubs were led by rookie Orlando Cepeda (.322-29-76) at the plate and Connie Johnson (19 wins, 2.97 ERA) on the mound. The rest of the league saw several key events. Brooklyn's 38-year old Ted Williams replaced Babe Ruth as the All-Time leader in both home runs (694) and runs batted in (2,014). Brooklyn's Dick Stuart, the NL Rookie of the Year, came out blaring as he belted an amazing 64 home runs, tying Babe Ruth for the single season home run record. It wasn't a good year for the Babe. The series saw the world championship fly back north to Milwaukee as the Braves knocked off the Yanks in seven games. The star of the series was Hank Aaron, who batted over .380 and belted 3 home runs. Outside of the finish of the two pennant races and the World Series, the most far reaching story of the year was the decision of the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants to abandon their traditional turf for the new California scene. Unlike previous franchises, both teams were still good gate drawers but they each cited outdated ball parks for the move and wanted the unlimited potential that Los Angeles and San Francisco offered. 1958 - MLB Year In Review
Ebbets Field felt the wrecker's ball, the Polo Grounds played only to history's ghosts and the west coast had it's first taste of major league baseball. The Dodgers have set up shop at Memorial Coliseum. The huge football stadium had a monsterously vast right field, ranging to 440 feet in the power alley, and a short 251-foot left field target, which had a 40-foot high screen that extended 140 feet to left center. This was designed to prevent a feared flood of cheap home runs. The Giants new home was San Francisco's Seals Stadium, which seated only 22,900. Both teams planned new stadiums. A city-built and owned Candlestick Park received quick approval and a mid-1959 was the targeted time for occupancy. The Dodgers reached an agreement with Los Angeles city officials in which the Dodgers would get the valuable Chavez Revine land where they could build themselves a $12 million stadium. There was a protest and the California Supreme Court had to get involved. The Court ended up passing the final decision in January next year. Unfortunately, the new surroundings weren't lucky for the Dodgers as they continued to sit in the second division of the NL when the season concluded. The Giants, on the other hand, had much better results. Except for a one-month stretch during the early summer, the Giants held the lead and was able to clinch the pennant midway through the final week of the regular season. The team was led by the hitting of the league's batting average champion, Bill White (.333) and the power of slugger Ernie Banks (47 HR, 126 RBI), the NL's MVP. Whitey Ford led the mound staff with a major league leading 22 wins. The Pittsburgh Pirates trailed only San Francisco all season long and finished in second place 2 games behind the Giants. The Bucs were led by the pitching of the NL's Cy Young Award winner, Camilo Pascual (18 wins, 2.34 ERA). The Milwaukee Braves finished 9 games behind San Francisco, in third place, thanks to the arm of Don Drysdale (MLB leading 2.07 ERA).
The race in the AL was almost as uneventful. The Detroit Tigers took the lead in the early going before the Chicago White Sox roared back and took the lead at the end of August. The Pale Hose clinched the AL title a day before the Giants did in the senior circuit. The hitting of Vada Pinson (AL leading .338 average) and Stan Musial (.329) led the way for Chicago. The Detroit Tigers ended up finishing in second place, 3 games back, behind the bat of Willie Mays (25 HR, 113 RBI). The Baltimore Orioles finished third, 4 games behind the front running White Sox, and 2 games ahead of the Kansas City Athletics, who had the AL's MVP, Frank Robinson (.322-47-132) plus sluggers Duke Snider (44 HR, 116 RBI) and Roger Maris (35 HR). During the World Series, the teams split the first two games, the first two ever at Seals Stadium, then the White Sox took the next two games, behind the pitching of Don Mossi and Robin Roberts. The Giants, faced with elimination, took game #5 behind the bats of Norm Cash and Del Ennis but the White Sox took the next game as Roger Craig shut down the Giants bats. Code:
