1904 - AL Year In Review
Another year, another tight race. The Cleveland Bronchos and Philadelphia Athletics were in a dogfight as the Bronchos had a 1 game lead over the Athletics and a 2-game lead over New York when September rolled around. With ten games remaining, Cleveland had a half-game lead over the Athletics and 1.5 games over the Highlanders and on the last day of the season, they clinched the AL title. Cleveland was led by the bat of Bill Bradley and the arms of Ralph Caldwell and Jim St.Vrain. Philadelphia finished 1 game back and led by the pitching of Eddie Plank and Rube Waddell, who won the pitching triple crown with 28 wins, a 1.21 ERA and 324 strikeouts. The New York Highlanders finished third, two games behind, with the league's Outstanding Batter Award winner Mike Donlin and Bill Keister leading the charge.
The American and National Leagues coexisted without incident in 1904 in the fall it was a different matter. Near the end of the season, owners from both the Bronchos and the Athletics offered to play the NL title winner, the Boston Braves, in the postseason to decide the world's champion. The Braves' President stated that last year's results were a fluke and that the American League was an inferior league. Despite the heavy criticism, he stood his ground so there was no World Series played. Code:

1904 - NL Year In Review
After their team won the NL title in 1903, Braves fans were hungry for a repeat and they received it in 1904. The combination of hitters Billy Lush and Fred Tenney plus the pitching of Chief Bender and Bill Dineen led Boston to the title as they were a half-game behind Brooklyn with Philadelphia only 1 game behind the Superbas in third. Boston was able to overtake Brooklyn and gain a 3.5 game lead before holding on and finishing in front by three games. The Phillies collapsed and were eliminated from the race with about a week to go. Brooklyn finished in second thanks to the bats of Tom Leahy, who finished second in average with .329, and Steve Brodie, who finished second in home runs with 6. The Phillies were led at the plate by Jack Doyle, who led the NL in runs batted in with 92.
The cheers of Braves fans turned sour as Boston's President refused to play the title winner from the American League, stating that last year's results in the World Series was a fluke and the league was inferior and not good enough to play the National League's title winner for a championship. 1905 -- MLB Year In Review
It was a pitcher's year in the American League as there were only four regular .300 hitters, the Detroit team batting average was .266 and it was good enough to score a league-leading 642 runs and bring the franchise back from a down year in 1904 to the league title. The Tigers' return to the top of the standings thanks to the bats of Armbruster, who led the AL in average with .320, and Sam Crawford, who finished third in the league in RBI. The team had a really good 2.17 team ERA but the league leading honors went to the second place Philadelphia Athletics, whose staff compiled an ERA of 2.15.
Although Philadelphia's pitching was great enough to make the race a photo-finish between themselves and the Tigers, most of the season saw a three-way race between Detroit, Philadelphia and Cleveland, the defending champs. Cleveland faded in the end as they started September 9 games behind and finished 13 games back. The Athletics hung close to the Tigers but even with the strong hitting of Sherry Magee, the team didn't have enough muscle to overtake Detroit. Philadelphia had started 6.5 games back heading into September and got as close as 2 games before Detroit clinched the title on the next-to-last day of the season. The Athletics were led by the pitching of Eddie Plank and Rube Waddell, who won 22 games, had an era of 2.14 and struck out 315 batters in receiving the league's outstanding pitcher award. In the National League, the Giants had a rough race with the Chicago Cubs but managed to become league champs by clinching the title around the middle of September. Chicago kept within striking distance as the team headed into September trailing by 8 games then they hit a cold spell and ended up 11 games behind the front running Giants. The Giants' pitching staff led the way thanks to the pitching of Christy Mathewson and Dad Hale, who 22 games with an era of 2.30 to gather the NL's Rookie of the Year award. The Cubs had a tremendous 2.10 team ERA and were led by the pitching of Hooks Wiltse. Wiltse finished with a league-high 27 wins to go along with a league leading 1.55 era and 224 strikeouts to win the league's Outstanding Pitcher award. After a one-year absence, the World Series resumed with the Giants still hot as they defeated the Detroit Tigers, 4 games to 1. Code:

1906 -- MLB Year In Review
For the past three seasons the fans in Pittsburgh had been waiting for the Pirates to seriously contend after being in the middle of the pack but a lot of games behind the NL title winners. In 1906, behind the hitting of Jimmy Barrett and Charley Hickman, Pittsburgh headed into September trailing the St.Louis Cardinals by 3 games. The Pirates scratched and clawed their way to the top and tied St.Louis with four games to go. The two teams battled each other in the standings and ended up tied going into the final day of the regular season. Deacon Phillippe pitched a four-hit shutout to defeat the Cubs, while St.Louis lost to the Giants, to win the NL title for Pittsburgh. The second placed Cardinals were paced by 25-game winners Big Ed Walsh and rookie Ed Karger, who won the Rookie of the Year award, while Walsh garnered the Outstanding Pitcher award. The Chicago Cubs finished in third-place, nine games behind, showing that last season's finish was not a fluke.
In the American League, the Philadelphia Athletics jumped to a double-digit lead during the summer and headed into September 10.5 games ahead of the St.Louis Browns. The Mackmen coasted and clinched the league's title with about a week to go. Philadelphia was led by their terrific pitching staff as Rube Waddell led the AL in ERA and strikeouts plus had 22 wins, good enough to win the league's Outstanding Pitcher award. Star hurler Eddie Plank had 24 wins and Jim Buchanan chipped in with 22 wins. The White Sox caught fire late in September to drive past St.Louis and finish in second place, seven games behind the title winning Athletics. Chicago's rookie pitcher Slow Joe Doyle finished second in ERA and co-led the AL with 24 wins to get the league's Rookie of the Year award. St.Louis continued it's fade and finished in third place, a distant 13 games behind. During the World Series, Pittsburgh jumped out to a 2 games to 1 lead with games two and three being shutouts by Irv Young and Jack Pfiester. Philadelphia then roared back winning the next three games by the scores of 7-5, 2-0 and 3-0, the last game being a no-hitter by Al Orth. Code:

1907 - MLB Year In Review
The Philadelphia Athletics came into the 1907 season looking for a repeat as world champions. During the summer months the AL's title chase became a two-team race as the White Elephants and the New York Highlanders were neck-and-neck. When September rolled around, Philadelphia held a 2-1/2 game lead over New York and were able to stretch the lead enough to kill the Highlanders' hopes with four games to go.
One of the key figures and a main reason for Philadelphia's defending of the league title was the maturing of Ty Cobb. The 20-year old Georgia Peach, in his fourth season with the Athletics, blossomed into a batting terror by socking the ball at a .342 clip, enough for second place in the league's batting race. The pugnacious center fielder also rang fear into the hearts of the infielders just as much as the pitchers with his 46 steals, enough for fourth place in the AL, achieved mostly via a style of sliding in high with razor-sharp spikes. With Cobb batting third in the lineup, the Athletics led the junior circuit with 595 runs and Cobb driving in 80 of them. Eddie Plank paced Philadelphia with 25 wins with Jim Buchanan chipping in with 22 and Rube Waddell with 18. Plank also had a 1.86 ERA and 194 strikeouts in winning the league's Outstanding Pitcher award. The New York Highlanders finished in second place, five games behind the front running Athletics, thanks in part to the hitting of Mike Grady and Doc Gessler. The Highlanders' mound staff was led by Charlie Smith, who won 24 games. In the National League, it was a different story. The defending champion Pittsburgh Pirates were in a tight race involving four other teams throughout the summer months. Heading into September, the Pirates led by only 1 game over St.Louis, 2 games over New York, 4-1/2 games over Boston with the fading Reds now 10 games back. The Boston Doves got on a roll during the month and pulled into the lead by 1 game over Pittsburgh with only 6 games remaining. It wasn't until the next to last day of the season that the NL crowned it's champion as the Doves clinched the title and finished a single game ahead of the Pirates and two over the Cardinals. The Boston Doves were led on offense by the bat of George Stone. Stone finished second in the league in hitting (.318) and finishing first in home runs (5) and RBIs (74). However, he finished second in the voting for the NL's Outstanding Batter award behind Honus Wagner of the Cardinals. Wagner's final stats were .320-1-57 with 57 stolen bases as he led the red birds to a third place finish. The Doves' mound corps was led by Chief Bender and Johnny Lush. Chief Bender led the NL in wins, with 26, and in strikeouts, with 220, and combined it with an ERA of 1.85 to with the league's Outstanding Pitcher award. During the World Series, the big matchup for the fans was the batting match between the Athletics' Cobb and the Doves' Stone. Cobb ended up with a .385 postseason average and drove in the game winning run in game six. However, his batting was overshadowed by that of Harry Niles, who batted .455 with two home runs. Code:

1908 - MLB Year In Review
After winning the world series in 1905, the New York Giants slumped to the middle of the pack for the next couple of seasons but increasing their number of wins each season. In 1908, New York bolted in front of a tight three team race and were leading by 5.5 games over the Boston Doves heading into September. With ten games remaining, Pittsburgh continued to fall back and St.Louis started coming on strong and trailed the front running Giants by 4.5 games in third place with Boston 4 games behind New York. The Giants clinched the NL title with 4 games to go with the Cardinals finishing in second two games back and Boston was third, three games back. The main hitters for the G-men were Red Murray, Harry Davis and Roger Bresnahan. On the mound, Christy Mathewson led the was with 25 wins, second to only Ed Walsh, who had 26 wins in leading the senior loop. Along with Walsh, St.Louis was led by Honus Wagner, who won his second straight batting title by batting at a .322 clip. He also scored 91 runs and stole 48 bases, both leading the league, on his way to winning the league's Outstanding Batter Award.
In the American League, Philadelphia continued it's domanance by repeating as the pennant winners despite a strong effort by the St.Louis Browns, who finished 6 games behind in second place. The Browns got as close as 3 games with 10 games to play but just didn't have enough to stay with the Mackmen. Philadelphia was led once again by Ty Cobb, who won his first batting title with a .310 average. The Georgia Peach also stole 53 bases on his way to his second straight Outstanding Batter Award. Their mound corps was led by 31-game winner Rube Waddell, who also led the junior circuit with a 1.36 era and 235 strikeouts to win the league's pitching triple crown. It was the second time in his career that he achieved this and this was the third time overall that this has happened. Doves' ace Chief Bender was the first pitcher to do this back in 1903. The Browns had a 2.07 team ERA, second only to the Athletics' 1.85, behind the arms of George Mullin and Harry Camnitz, who won 28 and 25 games respectively.
