Ty Cobb just seems to keep on winning the award and has been steadily climbing up the career batting average chart. 1912 marked Cobb's sixth straight Outstanding Batter award, including each of the three seasons in which he has played in the NL. Eppa Rixey hasn't started his major league career yet but below are Ty Cobb's stats so far. Thanks for the kind words and happy reading. Code:

1913 - MLB Year In Review
The year's pennant races were as tight as a drum in both leagues. In the American League, Cleveland held a 2 game lead over New York, 2.5 games over Philadelphia, 3 games over Chicago and 6 games over defending Boston when September rolled around. With only ten games remaining, a different story had occured. The Red Sox got red hot and was now tied with Philadelphia while Cleveland was 2 games behind, New York 2.5 and Chicago 3. With only a few games to go, Boston had taken a 1.5 game lead over Cleveland while the Athletics were 2 back and the Yankees were 3. The Red Sox captured their fourth straight title on the next to last day of the season. The Boston offense was once again led by Tris Speaker, who led the league with a .330 average and was chosen the league's outstanding hitter as he also had 6 homers, 72 rbi and 40 stolen bases. The mound staff was led by ace pitcher Smokey Joe Wood, who finished second in the AL in wins (22) and first in strikeouts (235), while being awarded with the league's outstanding pitcher award. Philadelphia, who had been dumping some of their stars in a rebuilding mode, finished in second place, 2 games behind. The Mackmen were led at the plate by Frank Baker and rookie Bill "Duke" Kenworthy, who led the AL in runs batted in (108) and in runs scored (98) plus finished second in home runs (16), as he was awarded the AL's rookie of the year award. Cleveland finished 3 games back and in third place thanks to the hitting of Dutch Zwilling, who led the league in homers and was tied for second in RBIs.
The senior circuit also had a tight multi-team race as St.Louis lead by 4.5 games over Brooklyn, 5 over Philadelphia, 7 over New York and 9.5 over Boston, as September started. With ten games to go, the Cardinals' lead was down to 3 games over both the Phillies and the Giants, while Brooklyn and Boston started falling out of contention. With only a few games to go, the red hot Giants tied St.Louis and passed them the next day. New York won the NL title on the next to last day. Ben Houser and Ed Lennox led the way for the Giants as Houser was the NL's home run champ with Lennox finishing second in HRs and third in RBIs. St.Louis finished in second place, 2 games behind, thanks to the brilliant hitting of superstar Ty Cobb, who had set a major league record in average by batting a whopping .418 and also another one by hitting 29 triples. The "Georgia Peach" was awarded his fourth straight NL Outstanding Batter Award while finishing second in the league in RBI (94) and runs scored (110) plus finished third in stolen bases (59). The Phillies finished five games behind and in third place as pitcher Ed Hughes finished third in ERA (2.51) and won 20 games. Pittsburgh, which came out of nowhere to finish in fourth place, nine games behind, found a bargin in pitcher Grover Cleveland "Pete" Alexander. Alexander was released by Detroit late in 1912 and awarded the Pirates by leading the NL in ERA and in strikeouts. During the World Series, the Boston Red Sox split the first two games with the Giants and then took a 2-1 advantage by winning game 3 behind ace Smokey Joe Wood. However, the bats of New York woke up and the Giants took the next three games by the scores of 7-2, 10-6 and 7-6 as Braggo Roth drove in Doc Gessler in the bottom of the ninth in game six to win the world's championship. Your words are too kind. Thank you. Eckstein's is much better than mine, IMO, as well as the others. Is there anyone from this current time period that you would like for me to follow? Last edited by captaincarl; 01-07-2008 at 03:33 AM. |

1914 - MLB Year In Review
Europe has broken out into war during the summer and the heat was on the baseball world to try to entertain the citizens. The National League pennant chase was once again a tight struggle as once again as many as five teams had a shot heading into September. The Philadelphia Phillies were leading by 2 games over Brooklyn, who had been coming on strong since August, and they were followed by Boston (5 games back), New York (7) and Pittsburgh (9.5). With a week and a half remaining the Robins had taken the lead by a single game over Philadelphia, followed by both the Braves and the Giants, who were both 3 games behind the front running Robins. Boston got on a hot streak and had passed Philadelphia with three games to go and with only a two game series left with Brooklyn, were only a game behind. The Robins defeated Boston on the next to last day of the season to clinch the National League's title. The Robins could thank the strong hitting of Benny Kauff and Beals Becker, along with their ace pitcher Walter Johnson for their title. Benny Kauff, who co-led the league in home runs (9) and finished second in stolen bases (56), was awarded the league's Outstanding Batter award for averaging .310 along with his 9 home runs and 65 RBIs. Walter Johnson led the NL in wins (26), strikeouts (240) and earned run average (1.66) to capture the pitcher's triple crown. The Boston Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies both tied for second place, 3 games behind the pennant winning Robins. The Braves were led at the plate by the NL's leading run driver, Hal Chase, and on the mound by pitcher Eddie Cicotte, who had a 2.17 ERA, good for third place in the NL, and also won 18 games.
The American League race showed none of the drama of a pennant race -- Philadelphia's rebuilding was now complete and they were expected to win, and win it they did rather handily. The Athletics machine grounded out 693 runs, tops in the league, as Bill "Iron Duke" Kenworthy, Frank Baker and rookie Happy Felsch provided the teeth of the Philadelphia attack. Cy Falkenberg provided the mound leadership with his 21 wins. The St.Louis Browns came in second, relying on good hitting to keep the team in contention. The heart of their lineup featured Vic Saier, who led the junior circuit with 11 home runs. The leader of the Browns' mound staff was 22-game winner Hippo Vaughn, who tied for the AL lead in wins and also finished second in the league with 191 strikeouts. The World Series promised to be an easy Philadelphia win over Brooklyn and it was as they held the National League champions to only 13 runs in six games and won the series 4 games to 2. Code:

1915 - MLB Year In Review
After a year's absence, the Boston Red Sox returned to the top of the American League as they held a 1/2 game edge over the second place Chicago White Sox and a 3 game edge over the surprising Detroit Tigers heading into September. Within a few weeks Boston stretched their lead to 5 and 1/2 over Chicago and 7 1/2 over the Tigers and clinched their fifth title in six years. The one-two punch of Ted Easterly, who led the league in average (.319), and Tris Speaker, who won the AL's Outstanding Batter award with a .309 average and 76 runs batted in, were the leaders of the Boston attack to 690 runs, tops in the majors. The pitching staff was lead by Ernie Shore, who led the league in ERA (1.89) while posting 24 wins. Chicago, who finished 6 games behind, finished in second place thanks to the bats of Zack Wheat and Max Flack and the legs of Eddie Collins. The White Sox also boasted the league's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, Dick Rudolph, who led the league with 26 wins.
The defending NL champion Brooklyn Robins once again had their hands full as the team entered September with a 1.5 game lead over the Chicago Cubs with the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Giants right behind at 7.5 and 9 games behind respectively. However, with only a week and a half remaining, only the Cubs were in any position to challenge Brooklyn but they were 4 games behind. The Cubs continued to fade and the Robins were able to clinch their second straight title by the end of the week. The Robins' team stars at the plate were Armando Marsans, who led the majors in average by batting .347, and Benny Kauff, who won the NL's Outstanding Batter award by finishing third in average (.291), second in home runs (11) and third in runs batted in (77). The mound staff was once again led by their ace, Walter Johnson, who was the league's Outstanding Pitcher award winner, as he won 28 games to lead the NL and also led the NL in strikeouts with 239. He received help in the middle of the season with the acquisition of pitcher Jim Buchanan from the Philadelpha Athletics in return for first baseman Dick Hoblitzel and minor league outfielder Wally Mayer. The Chicago Cubs were led by an offensive attack that led the league with 610 runs. Their hitting stars were Charlie Hanford (.273-8-61) and George Anderson (.272-6-53) and the pitching star was 18-game winner Joe Benz, who also had an ERA of 2.32 while striking out 121 batters. By the time the World Series was over, Boston again claimed the championship as the Red Sox defeated the Robins in five games, 4 games to 1. The Red Sox pitching staff was led by Fred Arellanes, who won two games, and held Brooklyn to only 12 runs. Code:

I'm thinking of lowering the pitching criteria for the Hall of Fame. Here is what I am thinking:
250 wins or 230 wins w/ERA 3.50 or lower. Currently, four pitchers who are not in the actual Hall of Fame would be going in: McCormick, Ames, Donohue & Powell. One pitcher who is in the actual Hall of Fame, would be going in who otherwise would be left out. What do you readers think? Last edited by captaincarl; 01-24-2008 at 06:57 AM. |
