1916 - MLB Year In Review
In the National League, Brooklyn survived a tough race to win their third straight pennant by a small margin. New York was leading heading into September by 5.5 games over Pittsburgh, 6.5 games over Cincinnati and 7 games over Brooklyn. Brooklyn got hot while New York collapsed and took the lead with New York and Pittsburgh still alive going into the last week. The Pirates fell off but the Giants were able to pull to within 1 game with four to go. However, Brooklyn won their next two games while New York lost their next two games to allow the Robins to clinch the NL title. Brooklyn continued to showcase their ace pitcher, Walter Johnson. Johnson finished second in wins (27), first in ERA (1.80) and third in strikeouts (188) but it was the contiued emergence of Pittsburgh ace Grover "Pete" Alexander that showed off the best. Alexander led the league in wins (28) and was second in both ERA (1.87) and strikeouts (194) then was awarded the league's Outstanding Pitcher award.
In the American League, the Red Sox proved very capable of defending their title in spite of multiple injuries to star Tris Speaker, which limited him to only 88 games. Behind the bat of catcher Ted Easterly and the arm of Smokey Joe Wood, Boston held a 5 game lead heading into September and was able to hold off the New York Yankees to win their second straight title, and sixth in seven years, with two games remaining. Easterly was awarded with the AL's Outstanding Hitter award for leading the league with a .346 average as well as finishing in the top five in onbase percentage, slugging percentage and home runs. Smokey Joe Wood was awarded the league's Outstanding Pitcher award for the second time in four years as he won 28 games and finished with a 2.05 ERA, good enough for second in the league. The World Series was a case of the Red Sox pitching and defense against Brooklyn's superiority with the bat. The former proved more meaningful as Boston rallied from a 3-0 game deficit to win the next four games, including the final game by scoring a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the 11th inning, and win the series by a 4 games to 3 margin. I know. Especially since Smokey Joe was the outstanding pitcher for 1916 plus other years past. Maybe the Bosox GM knows something. On the topic of GM's and their thinkings, how could the Tigers give up so early on Grover "Pete" Alexander. I couldn't tell what the reasoning was behind his release but the Pirates are certainly happy that they have him. |

Would any of the readers like to be members of a veteran's committee for my Hall of Fame? You would be allowed to nominated players who you feel deserve to be in the hall but were not automatically inducted.

I'm glad you like it and I hope that you continue to enjoy it as I go through the years. I had tried this before but my first attempt ended in 1917 when my file somehow got corrupted. Hopefully this will go on a lot longer than that. Thanks for reading and if you have anyone for me to follow in the future please let me know. |

1917 - MLB Year In Review
The St.Louis Browns capped a three-year rise from near the bottom of the standings by winning the American League title over the Boston Red Sox by two games. St.Louis led by four games heading into September then Boston closed the gap to 1.5 games with 5 games to go before the Browns pulled away and clinched the title two games later. Good hitting and pitching made St.Louis the class of the league this season. Shortstop Charlie Hollocher and rookie outfielder Ross Youngs were .300 hitters, and pitcher Hippo Vaughn led the way in wins with 26 and ERA with 1.69.
The Red Sox entered their title defense and won only three games less than their 1916 winning season but it could only get them a runner-up position. Joe Judge batted .346 and won the league's Outstanding Hitter award with Tris Speaker and Vin Campbell also batting over .300. Ed Hughes logged a 20-win season to lead the pitching staff. The Pittsburgh Pirates went from seventh place in 1915 to the top of the National League in 1917 thanks to the pitching staff which led the NL with a 2.18 ERA. Ace pitcher Pete Alexander led the league in wins (26), ERA (2.01) and strikeouts (159) to achieve the pitcher's triple crown and was awarded the NL's Outstanding Pitcher award for his efforts. Fred Toney chipped in with 19 wins and Eddie Cicotte had 16 wins to help support "Ol' Pete". Pittsburgh headed into September leading the Boston Braves by two games and the St.Louis Cardinals by nine. While the Redbirds faded, the Braves hung on and eventually tied the Pirates early in the last week of the regular season. However, it just wasn't meant to be for the beantowners as Pittsburgh was able to grab sole possession of first place again the next day and clinched the title on the next to last day of the season. The Braves were led by their pitching staff, most notably Harry Coveleski and rookie Hod Eller, each whom were 20-game winners, and Lefty Tyler, who finished second in the NL in ERA with 2.10 and third in strikeouts with 141. In the World Series, the teams battled through seven games with St.Louis finally winning 4 games to 3 behind the pitching of Hippo Vaughn and Roy Witherup, who each won two games. The Browns outscored the Pirates 9-2 in the last two games to come from behind to take the world's championship. Code:

1918 - MLB Year In Review
With America entering full force into World War I, baseball was unscathed due to it being allowed to continue in order to try to entertain those people who had relatives and friends overseas. Labor Day marked the beginning of the stretch run as both leagues had heated pennant races.
The St.Louis Browns won the American League pennant by 3 games over the Boston but it wasn't as easy as it looks. On Labor Day, St.Louis had a very slight 1/2 game lead over Boston with Chicago 5 1/2 back and Detroit 9 back. With a week to go, however, Boston had tied St.Louis as the others faded away. The Browns finally broke away from the Red Sox and clinched the title on the next to last day of the season. St.Louis was lead by Billy Southworth at the plate but it was the pitching of Wilbur Cooper and Leon Cadore that led the team to it's second straight AL title. The Boston Red Sox finished 3 games behind despite the loss of Tris Speaker due to injury thanks to the hitting of Ted Easterly and Tilly Shafer. Fred Arellanes led the Bosox pitching corps with 25 wins. The National League race was as tight as it could ever be as only 11 1/2 games separated the first place Cardinals from the last place Cubs as Labor Day rolled around. Cincinnati was only 1 game back and New York was 1 1/2 back while Boston was 3 1/2 and Philadelphia was 4 1/2. With a week and a half remaining, the Phillies had closed to withing 1 1/2 games while the Giants were 1/2 and the Reds were 1 1/2 behind. St.Louis got red hot during the last week of the season and clinched the pennant with 1/2 of the week to go. The Redbirds' attack was led once again by superstar outfielder Ty Cobb, who led the league with a .388 average but he also received help from Bobby Vaughn and Bobby Veach. New York finished in second place, 1 game behind, thanks to the bat of Fred Kommers, who led the NL in RBI with 99. On the mound, the Giants were led by Sherry Smith, who won 24 games and had a 2.26 ERA and was awarded the NL's Outstanding Pitcher Award. The talk around the league, besides the very tight pennant race, circled around the city of Philadelphia. At the beginning of the season the managerial staff of the Phillies decided that they wanted to take advantage of the bat of pitcher Babe Ruth and gave him the starting spot in left field. Babe Ruth responded by batting .327 with 18 home runs and 94 RBI and was named the league's outstanding hitter. His 18 home runs were more than the TOTAL of the two players who finished second and third, Benny Kauff (8) and Tilly Walker (8). The World Series played to the seven game limit as the St.Louis Browns had the home field advantage over their crosstown rivals and won the last two games to come from behind and win the series 4 games to 3. The Cardinals took a 3-2 game lead as the Browns started Wilbur Cooper in both games 4 & 5 and he took the loss in both games. Code:
