1923 - MLB Year In Review
The St.Louis Browns enjoyed another banner year as they stormed to the top of the American League standings in June and never looked back as they won the pennant by 21 games, their seventh in a row and ninth since the birth of the junior circuit. The team was powered once again by the tandum of Harry Heilmann and Rogers Hornsby, who won his fifth straight Outstanding Hitter award by batting .371 with 36 home runs and 118 rbi. The mound staff had the three winningest pitchers in the league as John Raleigh won 19, Wilbur Cooper won 24 and Urban Shocker, the league's Outstanding Pitcher Award winner, won 29 games. Shocker also led the AL with 129 strikeouts and finished in second in ERA with 2.92. Philadelphia, possessor of a .300 team batting average, finished a distant second but showed some muscle of it's own. The player's name is Cy Williams, the league's home run (40) and RBI (132) king.
While the American League title race was another blowout, the senior circuit provided the excitement once again. The Cincinnati Reds headed into Labor Day leading the National League by a slim 1 1/2 game margin over the two-time defending champion Philadelphia Phillies with the now yearly contending Brooklyn Robins 3 1/2 games back. With less than two weeks remaining the Phillies started falling back but by the end of the last week of the regular season had climbed back to within a pair of game. The Reds were finally able to clinch the pennant on the next to last day of the season, the first ever NL title for Cincinnati since the turn of the century. Former Rookie of the Year, now blazing star "Sunny" Jim Bottomley led the way as he batted .340 with 22 home runs and a league leading 116 RBIs. Philadelphia, which lost slugger Babe Ruth to free agency after not giving in to his salary demands, fell as much as ten games behind until a resurgence brought them back to the brink of the league's title, finished only one game behind thanks to the hitting of Bib Falk, who batted .365 with 18 homers. The Brooklyn Robins continued to inch their way towards the top of the NL's standings thanks in part to the free agent signing of Babe Ruth. All "The Bambino" did was lead the league in average (.387) and home runs (40) while driving in 110 runs, and won the league's Outstanding Hitter Award for the sixth straight time, his first with the Robins. The World Series, as it has been the last two seasons, went down to game seven before crowning a world's champion. Cincinnati surprised the Browns by winning the first two games in St.Louis but the Brownies were able to claw back to tie the series 3-3 heading into a game seven showdown with the Reds. Cincinnati's Jim Bottomley smashed a home run in the second inning, his third of the series, and the team held an 8-2 lead then had to hold on as St.Louis scored four times in the bottom of the ninth for the Reds first world's championship. 1924 - MLB Year In Review
During the first half of the year it looked like the St.Louis Browns would once again take a strangle hold on first place as they grabbed the lead by five games. Both Boston and Washington at times traded the lead until St.Louis grabbed it but by Labor Day change was in the air. The Senators had taken over on top of the American League standings by a 1/2 game over the Browns and 1 1/2 games over the Red Sox. With ten games remaining, St.Louis started to fade and had fallen 2 games behind Washington with Boston now in second place, 1/2 game behind Washington. During the last week of the season the Red Sox had faded to as many as 3 1/2 games behind before trying to catch up but to no avail as the Senators clinched their first AL pennant on the next to last day. Washington was led at the plate by the league's batting average champ, Doc Prothro, and by rookie Lou Gehrig. Boston finished in second, three games behind, thanks to their pitching staff as Rube Benton was the major's only 20-game winner, getting 23 in all. Combined with a third place 3.39 ERA, Benton was awarded the league's Outstanding Pitcher award. Despite Rogers Hornsby collecting his sixth straight Outstanding Hitter award, the Browns finished in third place, five games behind the winning Senators.
As the dust was settling as to who was going to win the junior circuit's title, it was not to be that way in the National League. The Reds and the Braves at one time during the early part of the season fought for the league's lead but the Brooklyn Robins, led by the NL's Outstanding Hitter award winner Babe Ruth, his seventh straight, took total command and won going away, 15 games in front of the second place Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies were led at the plate by Ben Paschal, who finished second in home runs with 21, and on the mound by Henry Keupper, who won the NL's Outstanding Pitcher award with a record of 19-9 and a league leading 2.79 ERA. During the World Series, the favored Brooklyn Robins took game one but that was all as the Senators' mound crew took control after game two's slugfest and held Brooklyn to 11 runs in the next three games. This allowed Washington to sweep their three games at home and win the world's championship, 4 games to 1. Code:

1925 - MLB Year In Review
The Boston Red Sox, fresh of a second place finish in 1924, looked like the team to beat with a pitching staff that was led by Ralph Comstock, an 18-game winner, and was considered the favorite to win the AL pennant in 1925. What happened next seemed like an explosion as Comstock struggled and finished the year with a 10-19 record. Not only that but the entire staff just could not get into a rhythm as the team plunged to the depths of last place in the junior circuit. With the Red Sox out of contention, the race for the AL title was fought between the Indians, White Sox, Tigers, Athletics and the yearly contention of the St.Louis Browns. Heading into Labor Day, the upstart Cleveland Indians were leading by 6 games over Chicago, 7 over St.Louis and 9 1/2 games over both Detroit and Philadelphia. As they headed into the last week of the season, only the Browns and the Tigers were in a position to try to catch the Indians. St.Louis had cut the deficit to three games but a crutial series with Cleveland ended with an Indians sweep as Cleveland clinched it's first AL title with only a few games left. The Indians were led at the plate by aging Shoeless Joe Jackson and the rising star named Goose Goslin. Goose led the league in batting average (.359) and in RBIs (150) and took home the AL's Outstanding Batter award. The mound corps was led by 20-game winner Fred Heimach, who captured the league's Outstanding Pitcher award for his efforts. St.Louis finished in second place, three games behind, thanks to the continued hitting by Rogers Hornsby and the pitching of Dutch Leonard, a 21-game winner, tops in the league. Detroit, who finished 7 games behind and in fourth place, unveiled their new pitching prospect, rookie Lefty Grove. Grove was the AL's ERA champ with a 3.12 average and struck out a league leading 169.
After finishing deep in the second division on an annual basis, the New York Giants found themselves leading the senior circuit for most of the summer but dropped out of first place near the end of August while the defending champion Brooklyn Robins took the lead and led the Giants and the Phillies by 3 games heading into Labor Day. In fact, the whole lead was in a fight as the last place Cardinals were only behind by 10 1/2 games heading into September. While the Giants continued to collapse, Philadelphia continued to stay close to Brooklyn but the Robins were able to clinch the pennant with a couple of days remaining. Brooklyn was once again led by Babe Ruth, as he batted .333 with 36 homers and 117 RBIs to capture the NL's Outstanding Batter award once again. The Phillies finished 3 games behind thanks to the pitching of Keupper, who led the league with 20 wins. The talk of the National League, though, was the hitting by the Cubs' Ken Williams. Williams led the league in average (.368), home runs (40) and RBIs (126) to capture the Triple Crown but finished runner-up in a close vote behind Ruth for the league's top hitting award. During the World Series, Cleveland and Brooklyn split the first two games with the Indians winning game one by the score of 9-4 and the Robins winning game two by an 18-6 score. The series shifted into Ebbets Field and it was all Indians as they masacred the Robins' pitching staff to the tune of 5-2, 11-2 and capping it with a 24-10 drubbing in game five to win it's first ever world's championship. 1926 - MLB Year In Review
The Indians seemed to have the American League pennant ready to hoist but had to fight off a couple of late season challengers before claiming the flag. With a ten-game lead in mid-August, the Indians were expected to waltz home, but Chicago and Washington made Cleveland work for their repeat of the title. The White Sox, led by Bill Barrett and rookie Lloyd "Little Poison: Waner, came within 5 games shortly after Labor Day before the Indians stiffened.
The Senators relied on a strong and talented lineup, led by Sam Rice and Lou Gehrig, and a pitching staff led by AL Rookie of the Year Larry Benton, to finish in third. The Indians blended established stars like Shoeless Joe Jackson with the younger talents like Paul "Big Poison" Waner to field a lineup which lead the league with a team batting average of .307. The National League pennant picture once again was a dogfight between the defending Robins, the Phillies, the Pirates and the Braves. Philadelphia, led by Frankie Frisch, held a 3 1/2 game lead on Labor Day but this was one of the rare occurances that the team leading on Labor Day doesn't win the title. The defending Brooklyn Robins, led by Babe Ruth, winner of his ninth straight Outstanding Hitter award, caught fire and took control with a week and a half remaining as they broke for the top and never looked back, clinching the title with a half a week to go. Pittsburgh, led by the pitching of the league's Outstanding Pitcher award winner, Dazzy Vance, finished in third, six games behind the Robins. The World Series was all Cleveland as they swept past Brooklyn, winning 4 games to none. The major leagues said goodbye to pitcher Grover "Pete" Alexander, who had announced his decision to retire at the end of the season during June. Alexander won 250 games during his career with a career 3.10 ERA and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Code:
