1927 - MLB Year In Review
The Chicago White Sox, fresh off of their second place finish in 1926, were one of the favorites to win the American League's pennant and were in front by 3 1/2 games over the defending Cleveland Indians as Labor Day approached. Three other teams, Washington, St.Louis and the surprising Detroit Tigers, were also within range for a possible shot at the AL title as both the Senators and the Tigers were 7 games back and the Browns were 9 1/2 games behind. With a week and a half to go, Chicago found themselves continuing to falter as Detroit got on a roll and were now only 4 games back, with the Indians between them at 2 1/2 behind. The Senators had also started to catch fire and with only five games to go, both Detroit and Washington were only 2 games behind with defending Cleveland 3 games back of the still front running White Sox. As the race headed into the last couple of games, the AL pennant was down to a two game series between Chicago and Detroit with the Tigers being 2 games back with 3 games to go. Thanks to the hitting of rookie sensation Chuck Klein and the pitching of 3rd year vet Lefty Grove, the Tigers completed the three game sweep on the final day of the season to win the league's title, their first title in over 20 years. Klein not only won the batting title with a .359 average, but was also awarded with the AL's Rookie of the Year trophy. Lefty Grove finished third in wins with 19 and was the league's leading strikeout pitcher with 205. The Browns and the Senators both finished 4 games behind Detroit thanks to the hitting of Rogers Hornsby and Lou Gehrig, respectively.
The National League race was just as tight as four teams, including defending NL champion Brooklyn Robins were only 6 1/2 games apart. Brooklyn had the lead heading into Labor Day with Boston 2 1/2 games back and both Pittsburgh and New York 6 1/2 games behind. The Braves, behind the bat of Don Hurst and the pitching of Harry Carlson, stayed right behind the Robins and eventually tied them as they headed into a two-game showdown at the end of the season. Boston swept both games and won the pennant on the final day of the season, their first since 1910. The Robins finished in second place, 2 games behind, and were led by the one-two punch of Babe Ruth and Sunny Jim Bottomley. In the World Series, Boston grabbed a 3 games to 1 lead thanks to the pitching of Jumbo Elliott before Detroit's power helped the Tigers to even the series a 3 games apiece. 1928 - MLB Year In Review
The New York Giants had not won a pennant since 1913 but they finally broke through after a 4-way dog fight in 1928. Thanks to the arms of a couple of Lefty's, Williams and Stewart, New York came into September leading by 2 1/2 games over Pittsburgh and 5 games over Boston. The Pirates, behind the pitching of Hudlin, kept coming on and eventually took a 1/2 game lead heading into the final two games but the Giants came back to tie them on the next to last day and then took the NL title after a victory and a Pittsburgh loss on the last day of the season. The Braves finished in a tie for third place thanks to the hitting of Don Hurst and Charlie Gehringer. Hurst broke the stranglehold of Babe Ruth on the league's Outstanding Batter award by batting .332 with 45 home runs and 145 RBIs. The Cincinnati Reds, down by 8 1/2 on Labor Day, came storming hot and tied the Braves for third place, 3 games behind the Giants, thanks to the hitting of Dale Alexander, who won the NL's Rookie of the Year Award by batting .313 with 36 home runs and 145 RBIs.
The American League pennant race was not much of a race as the defending champion Detroit Tigers led Washington by 10 1/2 games on Labor Day and then coasted to claim their second straight title, winning by 16 games. The Tigers were led by Chuck Klein, who captured the hitter's Triple Crown by leading the AL in average (.371), home runs (43) and runs batted in (153). Detroit was paced on the mound by Lefty Grove and George Pipgras, who won 21 and 20 games respectively. The Senators, who finished in second place, was led by the hitting of catcher Mickey Cochrane. The World Series was a hard fought one between the two league champions. After New York's Williams had bested Detroit's Grove in game 1, the Tigers roared back and took the next two games by the scores of 8-4 and 12-4. The Giants then came back to take a 3 games to 2 lead as they won games four and five before Detroit came back and took games six and seven to win the world's championship, 4 games to 3. Code:

1929 - MLB Year In Review
In the American League, after a two year break Cleveland was leading by five games over New York and 5.5 games over Washington as they headed into September. The Indians, thanks to the hitting of Freddie Lindstrom, Johnny Frederick and Joe Hauser, maintained their lead over the other two teams and was able to clinch the AL title with about half a week to go. Lindstrom went on to receive the junior circuit's Outstanding Hitter award by leading the league in average (.372) plus hitting 21 home runs and driving in 105 runs. The pitching corps was led by Bill Sherdel, who was second in the league in both wins (23) and ERA (3.18), as he went on to receive the AL's Outstanding Pitcher award. The New York Yankees, second division dwellers since 1924, finished in second place, three games behind the winning Indians, thanks to the hot bat of Bill Terry and the pitching of Pat Malone, who led the AL with 24 victories.
The New York Giants continued their winning ways and were leading the National League by a slim 1.5 games over Philadelphia and 6.5 games over the Boston Braves. The Phillies caught up to, and passed, the Giants with a week to go but the G-men came back and clinched their second straight title on the last day of the regular season. Seven different pitchers had 10 or more wins, led by Lefty Williams' 14. The Phillies, who finished in second place only 1 game behind the winning Giants, were led by batting champion Bib Falk, who batted .367, and Dolly Gray, who won 18 games. The Cincinnati Reds finished in third place, two games behind New York, thanks to the mound duo of Bump Hadley and Carl Hubbell. Hubbell finished second in the NL in victories (19) and Bump Hadley led the NL in wins (22) and was awarded the league's Outstanding Pitcher award by also having a 3.22 ERA and 156 strikeouts to go along with his league leading 22 wins. The World Series saw the Giants sweep the first two games in Cleveland but the Indians, thanks to the pitching of George Earnshaw, took the next four games and won the world's championship, 4 games to 2. The year also saw several well-known ships pass in the night. Hitting greats Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker both ended their illustrious careers with a few more promenent players to follow in the coming years and could be taken as signs that the Dead Ball era is indeed, dead. 1930 - MLB Year In Review
With the depression in full bloom and pocketbooks nearly empty, baseball juiced up the ball to liven the attendance and the action on the field. For the hitters, it was a vision of heaven on earth. For the pitchers, it was the freight that open season was declared on them. Even the spitball, at one time a tool for the crafty hurler, was now gone. All that remained were frantic batting averages and over-inflated earned run averages.
Although all the clubs enjoyed the bashings by the hitter and suffered the agony of the pitcher, no other club could have the kind of extreme year that was had by Brooklyn. The Robins batted a robust .291 as four hitters batted better than .300. First baseman Babe Ruth and second sacker Tony Lazzeri led the attack as Ruth batted .356 and Lazzeri batted .330. Yet instead of heading up in the standings, they remained in the National League basement as their pitching staff got lit up for a major league high 6.53 earned run average. In 1930, nine teams obtained a batting average of .291 or higher, more than any other season to date. The 35-year old Babe Ruth showed that he wasn't through yet as he belted 50 homers, the third time in his career that he had hit that many and the sixth time that he accumulated 46 or more in a season. He finished first in home runs, second in runs batted in and third in batting average to grab yet another Outstanding Batter award, his eleventh of his career. Of all the clubs in the majors, only three teams (Detroit, Cleveland and Washington) were lucky enough to get a team ERA below 4.00 as the pitchers tried to hold back the flood of runs. In the National League, not even the power of Mel Ott (34 hr, 145 rbi) could get the Giants to repeat as champions. As the schedule headed into Labor Day, the Boston Braves held a 1.5 game lead over Cincinnati while New York was 3.5 and Chicago was 7.5 games back. Boston then got hot and coasted to win their second title in four years with Joe Cronin (.341-23-93) and Charlie Gehringer (.343-15-92) leading the way offensively and Snipe Conley (17-7, 2.82 era) on the mound. The Cincinnati Reds finished second and were led by George Grantham (.335-15-81) and Kiki Cuyler (.337-7-77, 42 sb) while Mel Ott (.333-34-145) and Hack Wilson (.316-30-115) led the New York Giants to a third place finish. The Tigers' Lefty Grove, who won the AL's Outstanding Pitcher award, led the Detroit mound corps that helped stake the team to a one-game lead over Cleveland as September rolled around. During the month the Bengals started to pull away from the rest of the league and clinched their third pennant in four years during the final week of the regular season. Grove finished second in wins (23) and first in both ERA (2.39) and strikeouts (239) in garnishing the award. The defending champs, the Cleveland Indians, finished in second place, three games back, thanks to the hitting of Paul Waner (.385-15-103) and Johnny Frederick (.328-23-132). Washington finished a distant third, 11 games back, and were led by the bats of Lou Gehrig (.335-26-92), George Watkins (.330-22-99) and also Rookie of the Year Billy Herman (.295-8-69). In the World Series, the Braves and the Tigers split the first two games in Detroit before the teams headed to Boston. The Braves, thanks to hitters Don Hurst and Ethan Allen, swept the three games slated at Braves Field and won the world's championship, 4 games to 1. Code:
